When US teenager Jake Olson isn’t playing football or golf for his high school, he’s often offering inspiration through his new book about his own life.
These activities might be too much for the average 16-year-old to deal with, but Jake is blind. When people ask him how he can possibly play golf without being able to see the ball, he says he is thankful for his father’s guidance.
It seems obvious that his early experience playing sports as a person with sight and muscle memory — repeating behaviors over and over until they become second nature — has also enabled Jake to hit the ball quite well.
Jake was born with a rare kind of eye cancer that took away the vision from his left eye when he was a small baby and finally his right eye, in 2009, when he was 12 years old. Rather than letting the disease hold him back, Jake used his loss of sight and his faith as sources of motivation (动力).
“If I was going to sit on the couch all day feeling sorry for myself, I wasn’t going to do anything. I decided right then and there that I wasn’t going to let it stop me and that I was going to go out and persevere (坚持不懈),” he said.
It was with that state of mind that the student from Orange Lutheran High School in California was able to write his first book, Open Your Eyes: 10 Uncommon Lessons to Discover a Happier Life. “It’s about opening the readers’ eyes to their true potential (潜力) in life and making sure that they use all the abilities that they have,” Jake said.
Jake’s father, Brian Olson, said the family is impressed with what he has done with his life, including showing people that they can get through hardships. “Your darkest hour can soon become your brightest, and with every setback , there’s a setup (安排),” Jake said. “In every one of us, there’s more potential than we can ever imagine, and it really is a choice.”
4. We can learn from the article that Jake Olson ________.
A. was born a blind child B. gave up on himself for a while
C. has great muscle memory D. is trying to find the cure for his disease
5. According to the article, Jake’s family members ________.
A. pity him deeply B. once lost trust in him
C. encouraged him to write the book D. admire his efforts and determination
6. The book, Open Your Eyes: 10 Uncommon Lessons to Discover a Happier Life, is to ________.
A. introduce good ways to get along with disabled people
B. inspire people to discover and use their hidden abilities
C. help people come up with better life goals
D. explain different meanings of “a happier life”
7. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word in the last paragraph
A. Fight. B. Failure. C. Opportunity. D. Success.
C
An ocean researcher, Peter Bromirski, at the University of California, San Diego, says waves’ have been getting bigger and stronger since 1970. There are also more big wave events than ever before. A big wave is about four metres tall or more.
When large waves reach the coast, they bounce back and run into new waves. The crash sends energy through the ocean floor, where it can be recorded by seismographs (地震仪). Those records allowed Bromirski to decide the strength and size of waves over a period of 90 years. Bromirski said he found the seismographic information by chance. Before the discovery, he said “it was almost impossible” to compare waves from the past with those from the present.
It took a lot of work to put the information together. Much of the information was. on paper. Bromirski and his team of student researchers had to enter the information into a computer so they could study the information easily. The slow process took years.
They found that the height of most waves in the winter along the California coast had grown by about 30 centimetres since 1970. Starting that year, waves of over 4 metres happened more often as well. Between 1996 and 2016, the large waves happened twice as often as they did from 1949 to 1969.
1970 is the year scientists believe the warming of the planet began to speed up. Bromirski says the new information shows that climate change is making ocean waves taller and stronger. That means they are more likely to harm the coast, roads and buildings.
Bromirski said his research may be a warning that bigger and stronger waves are ahead. With more warming, sea levels will rise and waves will get stronger, causing flooding and more damage to land. The California coast has already been damaged by big waves in recent years.
8. What does the underlined phrase “bounce back” mean in paragraph 2
A. Go up. B. Move back. C. Crash out. D. Take over.
9. What can we learn from paragraph 2
A. Forms of sea waves near the coast.
B. Ways the water moves to the shore.
C. The way of recording sea wave strength.
D. Difference between present and past waves.
10. Why did the researchers enter the information into a computer
A. To examine whether it is correct.
B. To use it conveniently in research.
C. To share it with other researchers.
D. To make sure of information safety.
11. What does Bromirski think of the change in ocean water movement
A. It will cause more serious results.
B. It will result in more heavy rain on land.
C. It will make climate change for the worse.
D. It will bring more risk to human activities at sea.
D
Before the Internet age, critical thinking was the most important skill of people. But in the digital age, according to Anastasia Kozyreva, a famous psychologist, a more important skill is critical ignoring (批判性忽略).
As researchers point out, we live in an attention economy where content producers on the Internet compete for our attention. They attract us with many eye-catching stories while providing little useful information, so they can offer us advertisements producing profit (利润). So we are not customers but products, and each link we click is a sale of our time and attention. To protect ourselves from this, Kozyreva calls on us to learn the skill of critical ignoring, in which readers can control their information environment to reduce exposure (接触) to false information.
According to Kozyreva, critical ignoring includes three strategies. The first is to design our environments, which includes removing low- quality y et hard-to-resist (难以抵制的) information from around. Successful dieters need to keep unhealthy food out of their homes.’ Similarly, we need to set up a digital environment where attention-catching items are kept out of sight: Like dieting, if one tries to depend on willpower not to click eye-catching “news”, he’ll surely fail. So, it’s better to keep them out of sight at first!
The next is to judge the reliability (可靠) of information, whose purpose is to protect you from false information. It can be realized by checking the source in the mainstream, which can be reliable.
The last is: “never feed the trolls.” Trolls are some people who spread false information online to cause harm. Do not correct them, because they do not care about whether the information is correct. Annoying others is their goal. So, ignore their bad behaviour.
By using the above critical ignoring skills, we can make the most of the Internet while avoiding being harmed by those who try to control our attention, time, and minds.
12. What can we learn about the attention economy from paragraph 2
A. It offers more information. B. If offers depressing stories.
C. It saves time for Internet users. D. It goes after profits from each click.
13. Why does the author mention dieters in paragraph 3
A. To explain the power of will. B. To prove the benefits of healthy food.
C. To show the importance of environments. D. To discuss the quality of information.
14. What should we do to deal with Internet trolls according to the text
A. Review their aim. B. Turn a deaf ear to them.
C. Correct their behaviour. D. Send hard facts to them.
15. What is the text mainly about
A. Strategies for Internet users to apply critical thinking.
B. Reasons for critical thinking in the attention economy.
C. Practising the skills of critical ignoring in the digital age.
D. Increasing the benefits of critical ignoring on the Internet.

Sometimes you can count on (指望) people to do the right thing. When Dave Tally found a backpack with a laptop and an envelope full of cash in 2010, he could have considered it a very lucky day. The homeless man counted $3,300 in the bag, an amount that would make a huge difference in his life. However, as tempting (诱人的) as it was to keep the money, deep down he knew it wasn’t the right thing to do.
Back then, Tally was sleeping in the basements of local churches and trying to save up enough money to fix his only source of transportation: his bike. That money could have bought him, a brand new one. Instead, he turned the bag to his boss at the Tempe Community Action Agency, an organization that helps homeless people in the area find jobs. Tally had been working there part-time.
“Finding the envelope with the cash was just exciting. There were lots of crazy thoughts that went through my head,” Tally told ABC News at the time. “I went into the survival mode for a moment, actually more than a moment, thinking about all the things I could do for myself.”
“I beat myself up pretty hard for even thinking I would spend one cent of that person’s money,” Tally added.
After Tally made up his mind to return the bag, he faced the problem of tracking down its owner. There were no identifiers on the backpack or a way to get into the laptop without a password. But then someone suggested checking the flash drive (闪存盘) that they’d also found inside the bag to see if it held any clues (线索).
It sure did. Arizona State University student Bryan Belanger had uploaded his resume (简历) to the drive, easily providing Tally with his contact information. As it turned out, Bryan Belanger was carrying that cash because he was buying a used car from Craigslist website, and he accidentally left his belongings in a station on the way to work.
Paragraph 1:
Belanger was regretful for his carelessness and thought his backpack was gone forever.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Tally said the day he found the money’s rightful owner was the day his life changed.

It took a lot of work to put the information together Much of the information was.
D To make sure of information safety.
11. What does Bromirski think of the change in ocean water movement
A. It will cause more serious results.
B. It will result in more heavy rain on land.
C. It will make climate change for the worse.
D. It will bring more risk to human activities at sea.

57. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
Belanger was regretful for his carelessness and thought his backpack was gone forever. When he saw Tally with his backpack, he was so moved that he offered a cash reward which was turned down by Tally. Meanwhile, Tally’s story made the local news, and strangers began sending him cheques and seeking him out to hand him cash in person. As a result, he had more than enough to fix his bike; what’s more, he was able to use his experience to educate others and change the way people think of homeless people.
Paragraph 2:
Tally said the day he found the money’s rightful owner was the day his life changed. From then on, people kept sending him donations to the point where he was able to get his own apartment and stop sleeping in church basements. But he never gave up helping people; he gave some of the donations to Tempe Community Action Agency and encouraged people to provide homeless people with more work opportunities. In his efforts, more homeless people found suitable jobs, improved their living conditions, and turned their lives around.
