The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has hosted the online competition since 2019 where the agency posts photos of bats online, and then asks people to vote for the cutest one to raise awareness about the animal’s ecological importance.
The first round of voting began Thursday and a Townsend’s big-eared bat named “Sir Flaps-A-Lot” from Utah competed against a hoary bat named “Hoary Potter” from Oregon.
Both the big-eared bat and the hoary bat have been included on a list of species needing conservation attention. Emma Busk, the BLM wildlife technician, said bats around the world play a key role in the environment by eating insects and pollinating(授粉) flowers and fruits. But they’re increasingly facing the threats of habitat loss, disease and light pollution, and are often regarded as scary disease carriers.
“There’s a lot of fear and misconceptions around bats,” Busk said, noting that people often associate rabies(狂犬病) with the animal. “But less than 1% of all bat populations actually carry rabies, and the bat-to-human disease spread is actually really low.”
Busk is rooting for “Hoary Potter” in the hope that an Oregon bat will win the beauty contest for a third time. Last year, “William ShakespEAR”, a female Townsend’s big-eared bat from southern Oregon whom Busk also photographed, claimed the crown. And in 2022, a canyon bat named “Barbara” similarly hailing from southern Oregon was declared the top.
“Our effort every year is to just collect as much data as we can on the species in our resource area, so that we do know how to better protect them, and proudly we do it well,” Busk said. The beauty contest will continue in rounds over the next week. It’s scheduled to end up next Thursday, when the winner will be announced.
4. What is the primary goal of the BLM’s online competition
A. To increase public interest in bats. B. To identify the most unique-looking bat.
C. To highlight the ecological role of bats. D. To promote conservation efforts for specific bats.
5. Which of the following best describes humans’ impression on bats
A. Mistrustful. B. Mistaken. C. Indifferent. D. Inefficient.
6. What do the underlined words “the crown” in paragraph 5 mean
A. The contest. B. The photo. C. The result. D. The victory.
7. What can be inferred about the competition from the last paragraph
A. It is a success story. B. It is a short-sighted decision.
C. It makes people annoyed. D. It works to the host’s benefit.

For as long as there’s been an intelligence quotient (IQ) test, there’s been argument over what it measures. Do IQ scores show a person’s intellectual capacity, which supposedly remains unchangeable over time Or is the IQ exam really an achievement test that’s subject to fluctuations (波动) in scores The findings of a new study add evidence to the latter one: IQ seems to be a standard of acquired knowledge that progresses in fits and starts.
The researchers at University College London report documenting significant fluctuations in the IQs of a group of British teenagers. The researchers tested 33 healthy teenagers between the ages of 12 and 16 years. They repeated the tests four years later and found that some teens improved their scores by as much as 20 points on the standard of IQ measurement.
“We were very surprised,” Cathy Price, who led the study, said. She had expected changes of a few points. “But we had individuals that had big fluctuations and changed from an IQ of 100 to an IQ of 127,” she added. Price and her colleagues used brain scans to confirm that these big fluctuations in performance were not occasional, or just an accident.
As we know, there are lots of factors that may explain changes in IQ. Though this study did not attempt to prove them, lots of former research has found that educational environment is key. Some researchers have found that strict academic curricula lead to improved IQ scores. Teens’ personalities, career morals and the home environments are important, too.
“This study should make educators and parents think twice. It should warn them of assuming that one low IQ score, at one time, is showing all that an individual is capable of,” Stephen Ceci, a professor at Cornell University, said. “Although many researchers still say there’s loads of evidence to show that IQ scores do reveal something essential about a child’s intellectual gifts, there’s a consensus(共识) that one test is not deterministic. It can’t accurately assess a person’s talents or future potential.”
8. Why does the author list questions in paragraph 1
A. To introduce a new theory. B. To celebrate the study’s success.
C. To explain the concept of IQ. D. To promote the standard of IQ.
9. What can we learn from Cathy Price’s statement
A. She was satisfied with the study’s results.
B. She was doubtful about the study’s results.
C. The study’s results were just accidental phenomena.
D. The study’s results were inconsistent with her expectations.
10. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. Factors that may lead to changes in IQ. B. The benefits of boosting IQ scores.
C. The strategies for enhancing IQ scores. D. Experiments conducted to study IQ.
11. What does Stephen Ceci think of educators and parents’ thoughts of IQ scores
A. They make kids more sensitive. B. They are wrong.
C. They are believable. D. They help kids improve IQ scores.

NASA’s InSight lander may be relaxing in retirement on Mars, but the robot continues to provide the space agency with precious information.
The lander in 2018 began its Mars mission: Gather data about the planet’s structure, its mars-quake activity and frequency of meteorites. During the mission, more and more dust gathered on its solar panels that provide electricity, and the robot ran out of power in December 2022 after sending a final image. It was declared “dead” in news reports.
Recently, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter checked on its retired colleague and sent back an image of the InSight lander on the planet’s surface. Even though, the lander can’t send images, its mere existence on the red planet continues to provide precious information. “By studying InSight’s landing site over time, scientists can see how quickly dust gathers, which helps learn the age of other surface landers,” NASA said in a post online.
After launching in 2018, InSight traveled about 300 million miles over 6. 5 months to Mars from Earth. It observed meteorite strikes and more than 1,300 mars-quakes during its mission. Just before the robot that outlasted its original mission by two Earth years ran out of power, NASA posted a goodbye note from InSight on social media: “My power’s really low, so this may be the last image I can send. My time here has been both productive and peaceful. If I can keep talking to my mission team, I will — but I’ll be signing off here soon. Thanks for staying with me.”
“The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter’s photos of InSight on Mars help ensure its colleague’ s contributions continue. InSight has more than lived up to its name,” said NASA. “Yes, it’s sad to say goodbye, but InSight’s legacy will live on, informing and inspiring.”
12. What was a main problem with the lander during its mission
A. The supply of electricity. B. The speed of sending images.
C. The aging of solar panels. D. The threat of meteorites and quakes.
13. Why do scientists observe the speed of the lander’s dust gathering
A. To find a good way to get rid of dust. B. To explain the cause of dust gathering.
C. To know other landers’ working years. D. To predict other landers’ working efficiency.
14. What can we infer from paragraph 4
A. NASA will add more missions to the lander.
B. The lander has accomplished all its missions.
C. NASA has prepared a new lander for the mission.
D. Scientists can’t do much about the lander’s power.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. The “Dead” Lander: A Pioneer Of Exploring Mars
B. The “Dead” Lander: A Collector Of Mars’ Knowledge
C. The “Dead” Lander: A Provider Of Valuable Information
D. The “Dead” Lander: A Trouble Maker Of Mars’ Mission

Have you ever seen a real ostrich (鸵鸟) The adult ostrich will reach 2.5 meters tall and the male ostrich’s weight will reach 150 kilograms. Although it is regarded as the largest bird in the world, it can’t fly. Its feeding habits are very diverse, but the leaves and fruits of plants are the main ones.
In Sioux Falls at noon on Tuesday, a small truck was carrying a roughly 7-foot-tall ostrich and a container with the leaves and fruits of plants. Just as the driver was driving on a busy four-lane (四车道) road, he parked his truck in the roadside and wanted to find a restaurant to eat.
When the driver left, the ostrich began to feel anxious, making some noise and pressing the truck’s door with its body.
Just at that moment, the door was pushed open, and the ostrich escaped from the truck and walked around, feeling like looking for something. And then it walked into the busy four- lane road, which brought traffic to a stop.
In order to make the road smooth, all drivers tried to carefully attract and lead the towering bird off the busy four-lane road, but in vain.
Drivers called Sioux Falls police and explained what had happened.
As soon as the police came, they also tried to carefully attract the ostrich off the busy road, but still in vain. Luckily, the ostrich didn’t run around.
“We can find out the driver’s phone number and call him. He must know how to solve it,” one of the policemen said.
“Good idea! If the ostrich stays on the road all the time, it will be very dangerous,” a driver said.
On the one hand, the police immediately started to find the driver’s phone number by the truck’s information; on the other hand, they continued to keep the safety of both the bird and the traffic. All the drivers were excited when the police found out the driver’s phone number.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The police contacted the driver immediately.

It should warn them of assuming that one low IQ score at one time, is showing all that an individual is capable of,” Stephen Ceci, a professor at Cornell University, said.
10 What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about

【答案】
The police contacted the driver immediately. The driver was shocked when he learned that his ostrich had escaped and caused a traffic jam. He quickly told the police that the ostrich was usually very tame but might be frightened and hungry. He said he would rush back as soon as possible. The police informed him of the current situation and asked if he had any suggestions to deal with the ostrich.
Feeling awkward, the driver thought of the leaves and fruits in the container. He told the police that the ostrich loved to eat those. So the police asked the driver to describe the location of the container. Then they carefully brought the container closer to the ostrich. As expected, the ostrich smelled the familiar food and walked towards the container. The police slowly led the ostrich and the container to a safer area beside the road. Finally, the traffic went back to normal smoothly and the ostrich was safely back in the truck. The driver was extremely grateful to the police and the kind-hearted drivers for their help.
