An unpleasant smell floated into my nose as the bowl of fried stinky tofu settled onto my grandmother’s dinner table. I immediately sat back. The smell ruined my appetite, and I pushed the dish away.
“It’s supposed to stink. Just give it a try!” my grandmother said.
Holding my breath, I unwillingly took a bite. To my surprise, the tofu beneath the fried skin was warm, soft, and mouthwatering. Thus, stinky tofu became more than a household tradition. It became my favorite dish.
Along with the stinky tofu, I would meet my Uncle Chan on every visit. As an immature boy, I never understood my uncle’s condition of Down syndrome(唐氏综合征).He was an unfriendly and terrible creature in my eyes. He constantly walked around the house, talking to himself. Whenever he was within view, I would run away in fear.
However, one day, my view of my uncle suddenly changed. I was just getting out of my bed when I heard soft steps approaching. It was my uncle. My muscles froze. He slowly sat next to me and touched my face gently, as a mother would stroke (抚摸)a baby. A wide smile emerged from his blank expression. How beautiful his smile was! I could not help but smile back. My fear disappeared gradually, and my muscles relaxed.
My uncle very much resembles stinky tofu. Stinky tofu smells unpleasant on the outside, yet feels warm and soft in the inside. Like stinky tofu, my uncle’s Down syndrome made me keep my distance at first. Yet, I learned that deep inside, he is harmless and has a loving nature.
The outside and inside of the stinky tofu exist as two extremely different worlds. Perhaps that is what makes it such a tasty dish. Not only is it delicious, stinky tofu offers a valuable lesson: never judge people at first glance, for true beauty comes from the inside.
24. Why did stinky tofu become the author’s favorite dish
A. It was related to family tradition. B. It turned out to be quite delicious.
C. Grandma encouraged him to try it. D. His appetite for food had increased.
25. The author’s attitude towards Uncle Chan changed when________.
A. Chan’s footsteps woke up the author
B. Chan showed his friendliness to the author
C. Chan displayed his love towards his mother
D. Chan’s blank expression made the author smile
26. What is purpose in comparing his uncle to stinky tofu
A. To highlight the nature of Uncle Chan B. To analyze the family relationship
C. To describe a childhood memory D. To introduce a traditional Chinese food
27. What does the author mainly want to tell us in the passage
A. We shouldn’t judge by appearances. B. A person’s taste changes over time.
C. Blood is thicker than water. D. You are what you eat.
C
If you face two similar valued options for where to attend college, you have weighed the pros and cons, but you still have difficulty deciding. You decide to give it more time, and think about it a bit more.
The findings of a fascinating paper titled Irrational Time Allocation in Decision-Making suggests you might be making a mistake. Participants in the research viewed images that contained pairs of different foods and they had to choose which item they preferred to eat.
The researchers found that participants spent more time choosing between options that were roughly equal in value than between options in which there was a large value disparity. In other words, people took longer than they should have when deciding between two equally appealing choices. When shown an unpleasant food alongside a favored food, participants chose quickly. When shown a favored food alongside another favored food, people took a while.
Relatedly, there is research suggesting that people take longer to distinguish between two numbers when there is a small difference than when there is a large one. For example, people take longer to determine which number is larger between 47 vs 49 than for 12 vs 35. Perhaps this tendency explains why people take so long to choose between two options with roughly equal payoffs. In the same way that we have difficulty distinguishing numbers that are nearly equal in value, we also have difficulty choosing between options that are roughly equally pleasant.
However, there are doubts among people. Some think this seems not reasonable. If two choices are equally appealing, then the decision shouldn’t take so long. Some wonder whether this works in the opposite direction—whether duration of decision-making implies that options are equal. When options are roughly equal, people tend to take a long time to decide. Does this suggest that if people take a long time to decide, then options are roughly equal Maybe in some instances, the longer we take to make a decision, the less it matters what we actually choose.
28. What’s people’s common practice in decision making
A. They often rush a decision without much thinking.
B. They seldom balance advantages and disadvantages.
C. They only concentrate on their personal preferences.
D. They tend to spend too much time on their options.
29. What does the underlined word “disparity” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A Difference. B. Preference. C. Growth. D. Potential.
30. What does the research convey in paragraph 4
A. It is difficult for people to value their options.
B. The value of numbers is difficult to distinguish.
C. People hesitate when facing two similar choices.
D People prefer to take those high-valued options.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. Never too late to make a decision B. Be patient with appealing choices
C. How to handle various choices D. The more time, the better decision

One day an elderly postman knocked on the door of a house and asked if there was anyone to take the letter. As soon as he said this, a little girl's voice echoed (回响) from inside, but even after 5 minutes no one came out.
"Can anyone help you take the letter I have to go to many more places." the postman said again.
"Uncle, if you are in a hurry, please put the letter under the door. It will take me more time. " the girl replied.
"No, it is a registered letter. Someone's signature is needed." the postman yelled.
Another 10 minutes past there's no response. The postman got a bit cross about the delay, and he was about to shout when the door opened. He was shocked to see in front of him was a little girl with no legs. Speechless, he gave the letter quietly, took her signature and left. That day he got her name, Sally.
Sally often lived alone. Her mother died at an early age and her lather used to work far away. A maid (女仆) was invited to stay with her in the morning and evening except the day. In a month or two, mails were delivered regularly, and their interaction and attachment grew. Sally noticed that the postman used io come barefoot. Rainy season came. One day when the postman left her home, his footprints were left on wet soil. Sally struggled out with a paper and put it on print and took down the picture of his feet. She asked her maid to get shoes of that size and kept them in a box.
Diwali (排灯节) was around the corner. During Diwali, the postman used to deliver mails and got Diwali gifts from the people who got mails. But when he thought about Sally, he started thinking that he shouldn't meet the girl empty-handed during the festival. After much thought he bought some chocolate for the little girl. The next day, he went to the little girl's house and knocked.

Another 10 minutes past, there's no response.

【答案】When Sally opened the door, the old postman handed her a bag of chocolate. “Happy Thanksgiving Day” said the old postman with a big smile spreading across his wrinkled face. Holding the chocolate tightly, Sally laughed, her eyes glistening with excitement. Then she asked the deliveryman to wait a minute. After 30minutes, she returned with a big box and handed it to the deliveryman, saying “Uncle, this is a gift for you.” the old postman accepted the box and lovingly put his hand on the girl's head as if blessing her.
Arriving home, the postman opened the box. Inside lay a pair of shoes, with a note attached to it, reading “Uncle, this is a gift from my side to you on Diwali. Thanks for your hard work. You deserve it. ” At the sight of it, he froze with shock, as if rooted on the ground. Warmth ran through his body and tears welled up in his eyes, murmuring “you saw me barefoot and gave me shoes but how will I be able to give you feet ”
