Are You Ready to Hug a Robot
Getting hugged tends to be a powerful positive emotional experience. Hugs have been shown to enhance social bonding and emotional well-being. However, not everyone can get a hug 1 they need one. Some people are lonely and do not have anyone to hug them. Others may be in long-distance relationships 2 it is not easy to get physical affection from their partner. In this case, they 3 receive fewer hugs than they like.
How can this problem be solved 4 scientists have proposed is to develop hug robots. This could offer lonely people the positive effects of getting hugged without the need 5 (seek) a person who could hug them. Nevertheless, designing a hug robot is not an easy task. For example, if the robot is very large and made mostly of metal, people might be frightened of it, 6 happily hugging it. Therefore, psychological research is needed.
A new study, which 7 (publish) in International Journal recently, focuses on the development of Moffuly-II, a newly developed hug robot, which can move its arms to perform different small gestures during the hug. When two people hug, they often do specific things with their hands, such as clapping the 8 (hug)person on the back to signal sympathy. It is important that a hug robot can perform similar gestures, too. In the study, the scientists wanted to know whether these gestures would make a robot hug 9 (appealing). Volunteers who Moffully-Il hugged generally preferred hugs with gestures to gesture-less hugs. They felt that the robot was more friendly when 10 (perform) gestures.
The findings of the study indicate that it is possible to design a robot that people enjoy to hug. Details matter here, as the intra-hug gestures played a significant role in determining how much the human volunteers enjoyed the hug.

Chinese animations (动画) are booming
The “Black Cat Delective”, released 40 years ago, was a childhood favorite for many Chinese. Since then, Chinese cartoons have come a long way. A
Growing up in Ukraine, Vadim didn’t know what it was like to live in a safe, stable home. His parents were alcoholics who would often beat him. They’d even stuff him into a wine container, breaking his little body and leaving only a small opening at the top so he could breathe and see — but only just a little.
By the time Vadim turned 9, he was living in an orphanage (孤儿院). Unfortunately, as is the case with far too many little ones, his life only got worse there. Not only was he hurt, but he was placed in a room on the third floor, making it impossible to get downstairs in a wheelchair.
This left Vadim crawling up and down the stairs, an activity that was both physically and mentally exhausting. He’d often be late for meals. If the food wasn’t already gone by the time he arrived, other kids would steal from him.
Then, a chain effect began when some special folks visited the orphanage. They told him a story about a spiritual figure who advocated love and forgiveness. This conversation helped the 14-year-old find his faith and, in turn, he had more hope than he ever had before.
Today, Vadim is on longer the boy subject to fate. He is a father to his own kids, and his life couldn’t be more different or better. Over the years, he’s discovered a gift for expressing himself through art. This inspired Tim Tebow Foundation, an organization fighting for the most vulnerable (脆弱的) people around the world, to ask if he’d like to create a piece that represented what it looked and felt like for him to have gone from “darkness to light.”
The result A truly remarkable painting that features Vadim, in his wheelchair, leaving behind his old home, including the wine container his parents stuffed him into. The Role of Crowdfunding in Business Growth
Crowdfunding is a fundraising method that makes use of the power of the Internet and social networks. It involves raising small amounts of money from a large number of individuals or investors, typically through online platforms. These platforms connect entrepreneurs (创业者) with potential backers who contribute funds to support a specific project, business, or idea.
Types of Crowdfunding
Reward-Based Crowdfunding—Backers get a reward, such as a product sample or easy access, in exchange for their contribution. This model is popular for startups and creative projects.
Equity (股权) Crowdfunding—Investors receive shares or equity in the business in exchange for their funding. This model is ideal for small businesses looking to raise substantial capital and is subject to specific regulations.
Debt Crowdfunding—Entrepreneurs borrow money from backers and agree to repay it with interest over time. This model is similar to a loan and is suitable for businesses with a clear repayment plan.
Tips for a Successful Crowdfunding Campaign
Set clear goals: Define your funding goal, the purpose of the funds, and how you’ll use the money.
Persuasive story: Make an appealing and genuine story about your business. Explain why it matters and how backers’ contributions will make a difference.

C
Those who had the pleasure of watching Benny Goodman at work saw a rather ordinary-looking man in rimless glasses and a conservative business suit; but they also saw a human being who could play the clarinet(单簧管) like no one before or since. This made Benny Goodman a unique individual.
Other Americans who have stood out from the flock include Joe DiMaggio, Beverly Sill, Ernest Hemingway and Jonas Salk. They, like Benny Goodman, were recognized and honored for no other reason than excellence.
It is doing something better than other people that makes us unique. Yet a surprising number of people still see individuality as a surface thing. They wear garish clothes, dye their hair strange colors and decorate their skin with tattoos to make some kind of social statement. But an ordinary guy who has dyed his hair purple or orange is nothing more than the same person with a funny-looking head.
The whole purpose of individuality is excellence. Those who invent, who improvise(即兴发挥), who know more about a subject than other people do, and who take something that doesn’t work and make it work––these people are the very soul of capitalism.
Charles Kettering didn’t like the idea of cranking a car to make it start, so he invented the electric starter. Henry Ford figured out the assembly-line technique and made it possible to mass-produce automobiles, and Elisha Otis, inventor of the elevator, indirectly created the city sky-line. These people understood that individualism means working at the top of one’s capacity.
The ones with the purple hair and the funky jewelry are just along for the ride, trying to be “different” and not knowing how to go about it.
The student who earns straight A’s on his report card has grasped the idea and has found the real meaning of individuality. So has the youngster who has designed his own spaceship, who gives piano recitals, who paints pictures of the world around him.
Benny Goodman understood it too. This is why he was at his best, blowing his clarinet, in a blue suit and black shoes.
43.The author mentions the appearance of Benny Goodman to _________.
A.show what a talented musician should look like
B.introduce an important figure in the musical world
C.contrast with his talent in music performance
D.indicate that he can’t stand out from the flock
44.The author would most probably agree that _________.
A.an individualist tends to seek difference both in character and appearance
B.the essence of individualism lies in pursuing excellence to the full
C.being different in appearance is the very first step to being individual
D.those who strive to win the recognition of others are real individualists
45.According to the passage, which individual’s actions may not truly embody the essence of individualism
A.A scientist who conducts research solely advancing knowledge for the greater good rather than for personal recognition.
B.A social media influencer who conforms to popular opinions to maintain a large following.
C.An artist who creates unique works but fail to gain fame and recognition from others.
D.An entrepreneur who prioritizes ethical considerations over profit in his business practices.
46.For the main thread, the article is organized by way of __________.
A.specific to general B.cause and effect
C.examples and conclusion D.comparison and contrast
Section C
Directions: Read the following passages. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
What motivates you to work or study harder Is it the thought of success and all the amazing things that you can achieve, or is it the fear of failure and worry about all the things that can go wrong for you 47 But is one better than the other
A recent study looked at the effect of fear-based strategies on British secondary school students. As is so often the case, it’s complicated. They found that if a test is seen as important, and students are optimistic that they can succeed, then the fear of failure can be used successfully by teachers to motivate these learners. 48 It can in turn lead them to do worse on the test than they would have done otherwise. The study also found that if students are disengaged and don’t care about the test in the first place, then, unsurprisingly, the fear of failure is not likely to motivate them.
Entrepreneurs often run the risk of failure. It’s a fact that most new companies will fail. 49 The personal consequences of failure can be significant, and so founders may be motivated to work harder to avoid them. A study carried out on British and Canadian entrepreneurs found that fear of failure can improve problem solving, as people are motivated to anticipate and resolve potential issues. However, the study also showed that it can lead to increased procrastination as people focus too much on what they personally fear, rather than what would be best for the business. If someone is less confident about their business idea, then they may find their decision-making negatively affected by their fears.
50 It can drive confident people to do better, but it can also increase our doubts and turn them into barriers.
A.Nevertheless, confidence plays a significant role in determining the effectiveness of fear-based motivation strategies.
B.However, if students are not confident, then fear-based approaches could trigger feelings of anxiety.
C.Leaders, managers, and teachers have often used one of these ideas to inspire people to work harder and achieve more.
D.Taken together, these studies show that fear-based motivation is complicated.
E.They may be inspired to learn new things that will help their business or find mentors who can support them.
F.But does this motivate or discourage business people Again, it’s not straightforward.
Summary Writing (10分)
51.Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Digital Nomads (游牧人)
How would you like to answer your work emails from a beachfront café in Thailand or a coffee shop in Portugal If that appeals to you, being a digital nomad might be for you. Digital nomads can literally work from anywhere as their jobs are online. Digital nomads rely on portable devices with wireless Internet capabilities such as laptops, tablets and smartphones. Typically, they work from coffee shops, restaurants, co-working spaces, apartments or internet cafés — places with an Internet connection.
Worldwide, statistics show the number of digital nomads hit 35 million in 2021. So what is it that makes the lifestyle of digital nomads so fascinating First and foremost, digital nomads get to live in different countries and cultures while they work, providing them with opportunities to have adventures and experience new things. These folks have also found the most flexible means of online incomes, allowing them to head out at a moment’ notice and go where they please. “I’m free,” says Nimisha Walji, “I can go where the wind takes me and live any place I choose! If I feel like a change, I can pursue that in a matter of days, sometimes hours.”
You may think that being a digital nomad is all sunshine and rainbows. It is not necessarily so. Job finding is one of the hardest tasks for the digital nomad, given that they have no permanent home, no office address, and no one knows them. To apply for a job, they need to find the employer and persuade him to hire them. Most of the employers hire from their own city, and that’s why it’s so hard for a nomad to find a job. Access to stable Wi-Fi and adequate workspace can be difficult. If someone struggles to stay focused at home, there can’t be a worse place than a fascinating holiday location. Few people can manage to be productive faced with the temptations and distractions. It seems that living the life of a digital nomad isn’t for everyone.

根据第一段中“His parents were alcoholics who would often beat him. They’d even stuff him into a wine container, breaking his little body and leaving only a small opening at the top so he could breathe and see — but only just a little.(他的父母都是酒鬼,经常打他。他们甚至把他塞进一个葡萄酒容器里,把他小小的身体弄伤,只在顶部留下一个小口,让他可以呼吸和看到外面——但只有一点点)”可知,Vadim常常遭到父母的虐待。故选A项。
根据第二段中“Not only was he hurt, but he was placed in a room on the third floor, making it impossible to get downstairs in a wheelchair.(他不仅受伤了,而且被安置在三楼的一个房间里,坐轮椅根本无法下楼)”和第三段中“This left Vadim crawling up and down the stairs, an activity that was both physically and mentally exhausting.(这让瓦迪姆在楼梯上爬上爬下,这是一项身心俱疲的活动)”可知,Vadim只能爬上爬下楼梯是因为坐在轮椅上无法下楼。故选C项。
根据划线词后文“They told him a story about a spiritual figure who advocated love and forgiveness. This conversation helped the 14-year-old find his faith and, in turn, he had more hope than he ever had before.(他们给他讲了一个关于一位提倡爱和宽恕的精神人物的故事。这次谈话帮助这个14岁的男孩找到了他的信仰,反过来,他比以往任何时候都有了更多的希望)”可知,特殊人物的到访让Vadim找到信仰,给他带来希望,这些都积极的变化。所以“Then, a chain effect began when some special folks visited the orphanage.(然后,当一些特殊的人访问孤儿院时,a chain effect开始了)”中a chain effect指的是“一系列积极变化”。故选B项。
根据第五段中“This inspired Tim Tebow Foundation, an organization fighting for the most vulnerable (脆弱的) people around the world, to ask if he’d like to create a piece that represented what it looked and felt like for him to have gone from “darkness to light.”(这激发了蒂姆·蒂博基金会(Tim Tebow Foundation)的灵感,该基金会是一个为世界上最弱势群体而战的组织,他们问他是否愿意创作一件作品,代表他从“黑暗走向光明”的样子和感觉)”和最后一段中“A truly remarkable painting that features Vadim, in his wheelchair, leaving behind his old home, including the wine container his parents stuffed him into. His new direction includes a beautiful forest full of fall leaves and bright light, showing the hope he is said to have found in the inspiring story.(这是一幅非常了不起的画,画中瓦迪姆坐在轮椅上,离开了他的老家,还有他父母塞给他的酒桶。他的新方向包括一个充满落叶和明亮光线的美丽森林,展示了他据说在鼓舞人心的故事中找到的希望)”可推知,Vadim想在这幅非凡的画作中表达的是他从黑暗走向光明,告别过去,收获幸福。故选D项。

【导语】这是一篇应用文。文章主要介绍了众筹在企业发展中的作用、类型以及成功进行众筹活动的技巧。
40.细节理解题。根据Types of Crowdfunding的“Debt Crowdfunding—Entrepreneurs borrow money from backers and agree to repay it with interest over time. This model is similar to a loan and is suitable for businesses with a clear repayment plan.(债务众筹——企业家向支持者借钱,并同意在一段时间内连本带利偿还。这种模式类似于贷款,适用于有明确还款计划的企业。)”可知,债务众筹适用于有特定还款计划的企业。故选D。
41.词义猜测题。根据划线词后面的“Be transparent and honest about your project’s progress and any challenges you encounter. Backers appreciate honesty.(对项目的进展和遇到的任何挑战保持透明和诚实。支持者欣赏诚实。) ”可知,对支持者做到直率坦诚是有益的,则划线词意为“坦诚”,故选C。
42.推理判断题。根据Tips for a Successful Crowdfunding Campaign的“Persuasive story: Make an appealing and genuine story about your business. Explain why it matters and how backers’ contributions will make a difference.(有说服力的故事:为你的公司编一个吸引人的真实故事。解释为什么它很重要,以及支持者的贡献将如何产生影响。)”可知,如果6年前成立的纸牌游戏公司“爆炸小猫”的老板们计划筹集一大笔资金来开展促销活动,强烈推荐他们应该编写一个吸引人的、基于真实信息的宣传活动故事,这样可以吸引潜在的支持者。故选B。

【导语】本文为一篇说明文。文章介绍了什么是个人主义,个人主义有什么特点。
43.细节理解题。根据文章第一段“Those who had the pleasure of watching Benny Goodman at work saw a rather ordinary-looking man in rimless glasses and a conservative business suit; but they also saw a human being who could play the clarinet(单簧管) like no one before or since. This made Benny Goodman a unique individual. (那些有幸观看本尼·古德曼工作的人看到的是一个相当普通的人,戴着无框眼镜,穿着保守的西装;但他们也看到了一个能演奏单簧管的人,在这之前和之后都没有人能做到。这使本尼·古德曼成为一个独特的个体。)”可知,作者提到本尼·古德曼的外表与他在音乐表演方面的天赋形成对比。故选C。
44.推理判断题。根据文章第四段“The whole purpose of individuality is excellence. Those who invent, who improvise(即兴发挥), who know more about a subject than other people do, and who take something that doesn’t work and make it work—these people are the very soul of capitalism. (个性的全部目的就是追求卓越。那些发明创造,即兴发挥,比别人更了解一个主题,并采取无效的东西,并使其发挥作用的人-这些人是资本主义的灵魂。)”可知,作者可能同意个人主义的本质在于追求卓越。故选B。
45.推理判断题。根据文章第五段“Charles Kettering didn’t like the idea of cranking a car to make it start, so he invented the electric starter. Henry Ford figured out the assembly-line technique and made it possible to mass-produce automobiles, and Elisha Otis, inventor of the elevator, indirectly created the city sky-line. These people understood that individualism means working at the top of one’s capacity. (查尔斯·凯特林不喜欢用曲棍发动汽车,所以他发明了电动启动器。亨利·福特发明了装配线技术,使大规模生产汽车成为可能,而电梯的发明者伊莱沙·奥蒂斯间接地创造了城市的天际线。这些人明白,个人主义意味着尽自己最大的努力工作。)”可知,一个符合大众观点保持大量追随者的社交媒体影响者不能真正体现个人主义的本质。故选B。
46.推理判断题。根据文章第一段“Those who had the pleasure of watching Benny Goodman at work saw a rather ordinary-looking man in rimless glasses and a conservative business suit; but they also saw a human being who could play the clarinet(单簧管) like no one before or since. This made Benny Goodman a unique individual. (那些有幸观看本尼·古德曼工作的人看到的是一个相当普通的人,戴着无框眼镜,穿着保守的西装;但他们也看到了一个能演奏单簧管的人,在这之前和之后都没有人能做到。这使本尼·古德曼成为一个独特的个体。)”和第三段“It is doing something better than other people that makes us unique.

47.前文“Is it the thought of success and all the amazing things that you can achieve, or is it the fear of failure and worry about all the things that can go wrong for you (是对成功和你能取得的所有惊人成就的想法,还是对失败的恐惧和对所有可能出错的事情的担忧?)”讲述了两种不同的激励因素,后文“But is one better than the other (但是一个比另一个好吗?)”
48.前文“They found that if a test is seen as important, and students are optimistic that they can succeed, then the fear of failure can be used successfully by teachers to motivate these learners.(他们发现,如果一项测试被视为重要的,并且学生对自己能够成功持乐观态度,那么老师可以成功地利用对失败的恐惧来激励这些学习者。)”讲述了在一项测试被认为非常重要且学生对该测试持乐观态度的情况下,老师可以有效利用对失败的恐惧来激励学生,后文“It can in turn lead them to do worse on the test than they would have done otherwise.(这反过来会导致他们在测试中表现得比其他情况下更差。)”
49.根据后文的“The personal consequences of failure can be significant, and so founders may be motivated to work harder to avoid them. A study carried out on British and Canadian entrepreneurs found that fear of failure can improve problem solving, as people are motivated to anticipate and resolve potential issues. However, the study also showed that it can lead to increased procrastination as people focus too much on what they personally fear, rather than what would be best for the business.(失败的个人后果可能是巨大的,因此创始人可能会被激励更加努力地工作以避免失败。一项针对英国和加拿大企业家的研究发现,对失败的恐惧可以改善问题的解决,因为人们有动力预测和解决潜在的问题。然而,这项研究也表明,这会导致拖延症的增加,因为人们过于关注他们个人害怕的事情,而不是对企业最有利的事情。)”可知,对失败的恐惧既可以有助于解决问题,也可以导致拖延症,由此可知,这种激励因素的有效性很复杂,F项“但这是激励还是阻碍了商界人士?再说一遍,这并不简单。”符合题意,选项中的“Again, it’s not straightforward”与前一段中的“As is so often the case, it’s complicated”照应。故选F。
50.根据后文“It can drive confident people to do better, but it can also increase our doubts and turn them into barriers.(它可以驱使自信的人做得更好,但也会增加我们的疑虑,并将其转化为障碍。)”
51.Digital nomads refer to those who can work anywhere with an Internet connection. The appeals of being a digital nomad include the opportunities to have new experiences and the flexibility/freedom to work wherever or however one desires. However, obstacles do exist, the biggest of which is job finding. Besides, poor access to Wi-Fi or distracting fascinating workplaces may affect productivity negatively.
①Digital nomads can literally work from anywhere as their jobs are online.
②First and foremost, digital nomads get to live in different countries and cultures while they work, providing them with opportunities to have adventures and experience new things. These folks have also found the most flexible means of online incomes, allowing them to head out at a moment’ notice and go where they please.
③Job finding is one of the hardest tasks for the digital nomad, given that they have no permanent home, no office address, and no one knows them.
④Access to stable Wi-Fi and adequate workspace can be difficult. If someone struggles to stay focused at home, there can’t be a worse place than a fascinating holiday location. Few people can manage to be productive faced with the temptations and distractions.

Dear Organizing Committee,
I am Li Qing, a Grade 12 student from Purun High School. I am writing to express my keen interest in participating in the upcoming “Chinese Workshop” event.
This cultural exchange holds profound significance as it offers a platform for our British counterparts to intimately experience the richness of Chinese culture. Through this workshop, we can bridge cultural divides and foster mutual understanding. Given my passion for Chinese calligraphy, I am eager to share this ancient art with our guests. Calligraphy is not just about writing; it’s a reflection of one’s spirit and character. Teaching this skill will not only impart knowledge but also promote cultural appreciation.
I believe that my enthusiasm and proficiency in calligraphy will contribute to the success of this workshop. Thank you for considering my application.
Sincerely,
Li Qing
