A 15m sperm whale (抹香鲸) beached itself in shallow (浅的) waters over the weekend because of ill health. Beachgoers were excited about the giant whale swimming so close to the shore, with many filming the experience as swimmers went right up to it to take a closer look. One person said the whale looked “happy” as it came close to the shore before moving back to deeper water. While local swimmers were excited to see the whale, they risked their own safety and could have made the whale feel upset and anxious by swimming so close to it.
“I think it’s protecting itself from any hunters, positioning itself in a way that we might expect in an animal who’s not well and needs to rest,” said Mark Cugley, who studies whales. “It became grounded on shallow sandbars, and it would swim off again. Then it would get grounded again. That’s why we need to fully assess (评估) its health.” Mr. Cugley said experts had examined the whale and it appeared to be unwell.
Sperm whales usually live far offshore and hardly ever come into shallow water. Lone whales often beach themselves when they are sick, injured or old and are looking for shallow waters to rest, according to whales. org. But without deep water to support their weight, whales can become badly injured inside their bodies and could die at sea if humans attempted to rescue them by moving them back into deeper waters.
Authorities were deciding on the best way to kill the animal humanely in the coming days, if need be, in line with requirements of the International Whaling Convention. In the meantime, authorities would continue to pour water on the whale to keep it wet and comfortable and stop it getting hurt from the summer sun.
4. Why did the sperm whale swim to shallow waters
A. It was in bad health. B. It was attacked by swimmers.
C. It was busy hunting. D. It was frightened by beachgoers.
5. What does the author think of local swimmers’ action
A. It is interesting. B. It is safe. C. It is meaningful. D. It is risky.
6. How did Cugley probably feel about the sperm whale
A. Uncaring. B. Concerned. C. Helpless. D. Surprised.
7. What can we know about beached whales from paragraph 3
A. They want to build a better home. B. They run into trouble due to humans.
C. Their lives will be put in danger. D. Their bodies can support their weight.

The rise of digital technology has completely changed the way students live their lives. From the way they socialize to the way they learn, digital technology has become a necessary part of campus life. Then how has digital technology affected students' campus life
On the one hand, the use of social media has made it easier for students to keep in touch with their peers (同龄人) off campus. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WeChat have become popular among students, allowing them to share their daily lives, engage in online conversations, and form virtual communities. Meanwhile, Digital technology has also changed the way students communicate with their instructors. With email and online chat platforms, students can easily contact their teachers for assignments, grades, and course content. This has improved communication between students and faculty, leading to a better learning experience.
On the other hand, digital technology has also revolutionized the way students learn. With online courses and virtual (虚拟的) classrooms, students can access a variety of courses from the comfort of their own homes. This has opened up opportunities for students to pursue their passions and interests outside of their majors. Actually, it has made it easier to promote and participate in multiple campus events. Students can easily create online activities to promote events, organize events using online calendars (日历), and even stream events live over the Internet. This has made it possible for more students to get involved and take part in various campus events.
Another benefit which is often ignored is its positive impact on their mental health. With online resources, such as anxiety apps and pressure support groups, students can deal with stress and anxiety. They can seek help when in need, as online services are available24/7.
Digital technology has transformed campus life in numerous ways. While digital technology has brought many benefits, it has also raised concerns about its negative impact on student lives.
8. What phenomenon does the author describe at the beginning of the text
A. Types of campus life. B. Change of social life.
C. Ways of students’ learning. D. Popularity of digital technology.
9. What can students do when they use social media according to paragraph 2
A. Build different platforms. B. Contact classmates in class.
C. Interact with teachers online. D. Form common communities.
10. What does the underlined word “revolutionized” in paragraph 3 mean
A. design B. change C. challenge D. reflect
11. What will be possibly discussed in the paragraph that follows
A. The possible risks of digital technology.
B. The reasons for the development of digital tools.
C. How campuses improve diverse digital practices.
D How we can avoid being addicted to digital technology.

It is late autumn—millions of gardeners across the northern hemisphere, pulled on their thickest sweaters, spent hours clearing large piles of leaves and packed them into plastic bags at the end of driveways.
In the US alone, nearly 10 million tonnes of garden waste go to landfill every year. That is a large amount of effort, not just from an environmental viewpoint but from that of our aching backs, too. So where does this advice come from Well, it largely comes from the belief that thick fallen leaves can make plants under them unable to breathe, especially shorter grass. They shut down important photosynthesis (光合作用) and get in the way of the growth of the shorter grass. However, this received wisdom has recently been questioned by researchers at Wisconsin University.
The key finding of their new research was that although clearing fallen leaves is one of the most common gardening practices, it makes very little sense. In natural ecosystems, fallen leaves help return nutrients necessary for healthy plant growth to the soil, which greatly improves soil condition. Removing leaves year after year breaks this ecological (生态的) balance. Letting some leaves stick around to cover your garden is a great way to help your grass and the local ecosystem.
They further explained that if up to 50percent of your grass lawn (草坪) is covered by fallen leaves, you might as well go back indoors and put your feet up. The advantages of this light leaf coverage far outweigh the disadvantages—the leaves will quickly break down and help next year’s lawn grow far better than if you had cleared them. Only at over 50 percent coverage do the Wisconsin researchers recommend clearing.
So why not consider leaving the leaves Save time, carbon and effort, and in exchange get a healthier lawn from this garden waste—that seems like a pretty good deal. And how many plastic bags could be saved by simply not binning fallen leaves every year In the US alone, about 700 million.
12. What does the author describe in paragraph 1
A. An amazing autumn game. B. A common sight in gardens.
C. A hot attraction in the north. D. An extreme weather event.
13. What is the received wisdom
A. Fallen leaves need not be cleared.
B. Fallen leaves protect shorter grass.
C. Fallen leaves block photosynthesis.
D. Fallen leaves are hard to break down.
14. The new research finds clearing fallen leaves makes little sense, because ________.
A. it ruins city image B. it breaks gardening rules
C. it affects local economy D. it causes ecological damage
15. What’s the author’s attitude to Wisconsin University’s study
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Unclear. D. Worried.

“Wait, madam. You don’t have many things anyway. I’ll pay for them,” he said.
Noticing that the boy couldn’t be older than 12 and didn’t look particularly rich, Susan said, “Oh, no. I couldn’t possibly let you do that for me.”
“My grandmother always tells me to do good things,” the boy said, placing his few things on the belt (传送带) and paying for everything that Susan had picked out.
Once Susan and the boy got their items ready, they stepped outside. Susan introduced herself and learned the boy was named Mark. Thankful for what Mark had done, she asked for his address to repay him later. Mark wrote it down on a piece of paper and told her there was no rush. Susan promised to pay back the money as soon as possible and pay it forward as he and his grandmother did.

A few days before, Alice had fallen off the stairs, breaking her left leg. She badly needed a surgery (外科手术) which would cost about 2,000 dollars. However, they couldn’t afford it. Should endangered animals be kept in zoos
Last week our class had a debate about whether endangered animals should be kept in zoos. Opinions varied greatly.
The supporters say that the zoo is the best place for endangered animals because they have a better chance of surviving in zoos than in the wild. We can prevent them from dying out by providing them with food and shelter. At the same time, people will know more about these animals. However, those who are against the idea argue that animals kept in zoos will gradually lose their ability to survive in the wild in the long run. In addition, it is not good for the balance of nature.
Personally, I think keeping endangered animals in zoos is not the best way to protect them. Animals should live in the wild where they belong. We can protect them by protecting their habitats.
第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】One possible version
The next day, Susan went to Mark’s house again. The door opened and she found Mark looking at her in surprise. “Mark, I’ve brought the money for the surgery of your grandma. I hope it’ll make a difference,” Susan said, gently placing the money in his hands. Tears of gratitude welled up in Mark’s eyes and he couldn’t thank her enough.
