Passage 1(2024浙江宁波二模)
The solution to any despair might be hope, experts say. It’s believing in a brighter future and acting towards it. 1 Here are strategies that can help cultivate hope.As Hellman,an assistant professor of psychology at Suffolk University in Boston, points out,“Hope begets hope, and it has such a significant protective factor.”
2 Make it a point to always be working toward at least one goal that’s meaningful,Hellman advises. In other words,it shouldn’t be something you have to do but something you want to do.“Goals can be anything that’s important to us,” he says.
Brainstorm solutions. If you’ve set a goal that’s meaningful to you,but you can’t figure out a way to achieve it,you’ll probably feel pretty hopeless.People who are high in hope, meanwhile, tend to generate lots of ways. 3 If you’re struggling to make a plan,Hellman suggests sitting down with a pen and paper and giving yourself an hour to brainstorm solutions.
Seek out success stories. It’s said that people cultivate hope by seeking support from their parents and specific teachers. But they also got a lot out of learning about other people who have done well for themselves.Hellman says,“ 4 ”
Tap into your imagination.Hellman thinks of imagination as “the instrument of hope”.Let’s say you set a goal for the week.Spend a few minutes reflecting on or talking about what would happen if you achieved it.“How does it impact you,or how would it benefit others ” he says.“ 5 And when you can see yourself in the future, that is the very essence of hope.”
A.Do something meaningful.
B.It can be taught and nurtured.
C.Think in a goal-oriented way.
D.With these good examples, people are bound to be successful.
E.So,if one doesn’t work out, they have an alternative at the ready.
F.By seeing other people succeed, they feel like they could succeed.
G.You and I have this wonderful capacity to play a movie in our head.

Passage 2
(2024浙江温州二模)
Is a moviegoer different from a movie-lover I’d say so.You can love a movie by watching it at home. 6 .I’ve spent a lot of time talking to people about movies.By listening to what they say,I can report they only share one thing in common:they go out.
I’ve thought about two views of the moviegoer lately.
The first view comes from Roland Barthes. Most often, his moviegoers don’t go to the movies for a distinct purpose. 7 .They are bored.Once they get inside, they can’t help but sink into a relaxed state. When they leave the movie theater, these moviegoers don’t want to talk to anyone about the movie.
8 .Barthes sees them as a lonely being, one who is introspective(自省的).I think some of us use movie theaters to retreat inside ourselves.
The second view comes from the Clark Theater manager,Bruce Trinz. When people go to the movies they go for a certain personal motive. They may want to forget something,or escape from the lives they are leading.Or they may want to see a film they liked years ago. 9 ,they are the hopeless addicts who, quite simply, like movies. The only thing I would challenge in this definition is the word hopeless. 10 ,but they come to the movies filled with hope. They may not be able to define what they hope to experience, but they will know it when they feel it.
A.Whatever motive they have
B.To be a moviegoer, you have to go out
C.The movie also puts them somewhere else
D.They are instead wrapped up in themselves
E.Because moviegoers go in search of beauty
F.Moviegoers may be hopelessly addicted to the movies
G.It’s something to do with a response to leisure, free time

Passage 3(2024福建漳州三模)
It’s summer. You’re on your favourite beach towel,a friend beside you. You’re both absorbed in books, occasionally taking sips of water. But what happens when it’s time to head home Will you carry on reading together later Generally speaking, reading tends to be seen as a solitary(孤独的) pastime.
11 However, the benefits of sharing the experience are numerous and worth sticking with throughout the year.
12 For example, you don’t have to brainstorm to organize a conversation, because you both have a book in your hands. You can get lost in your book without worrying about seeming rude by not keeping up a constant stream of chatter. As you both enter the same state, your blood pressure will go down, muscle tension will ease, and your worries will fade away. All these put you at ease. 13 A quiet corner of the playground,a blanket spread out on the grass in the garden,or any calm space where you feel relaxed will do.
Spending time together reading can strengthen friendships. As you turn the pages, you might discover interesting facts to pass a long or funny anecdote to giggle (咯咯笑) over.Sometimes, you’ll come across more serious themes, such as losing a loved one or a cherished pet,or facing any one of life’s many challenges. 14
Reading fiction has been shown to enhance empathy (同理心),which is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. As you know, novels allow us to live countless experiences through their characters, which will result in heightened sensitivity. 15 For example,a person’s empathetic response increases as he emerges from being immersed in a story.
A.Reading with others is comforting in many ways.
B.And this sensitivity can lead to an immediate impact.
C.Reading can surely bring the joy of relaxation to people.
D.Besides, you don’t need to find a specific place to get into this zone.
E.So it might seem unusual to pull out a novel in the company of others.
F.Reading in pair may help you and your friend stay more committed to reading.
G.Discussing these themes can help deepen the bond between you and your friend.

15.B 上文提到了小说阅读将提高我们的敏感度,下文讲了高敏感度产生的影响:人的移情反应会增加,B项切合语境。
Passage 4(2024山东济南一模)
Risks of Overtraining
Getting in shape and training for an event such as a marathon requires long-lasting and intense physical commitment. 16 But the truth is, sometimes the very acts we do to get healthy can actually push us past our physical limits.
Specifically, overtraining is a set of signs that occur when your body is not able to recover sufficiently before going into your next workout. 17 People tend to ignore them.Over time, the cycle of starting the next training session before allowing recovery causes breakdown of the very parts of the body that you work so hard to build up.
The structures and systems of your body adapt to the demands you have placed on them before the rest time.If your workout slightly goes beyond your current ability,it will adapt toward what you did in a positive way. 18
Two main factors are necessary in recovery:nutrition and rest.Good nutrition, including water and protein intake,is extremely important, especially within 40 minutes of your workout. 19 Your body uses the nutrients you have given it during the rest time, especially sleep,to strengthen.
One of the best ways to prevent overtraining is to focus on your morning resting heart rate. 20 Generally, you will detect an increase in your heart rate before the other signs show up.Tracking it in a log can be a great way to monitor your recovery.
A.It’s easy to measure and track.
B.Allowing time for recovery is also essential.
C.The problem is that they show up very gradually.
D.Below are the signs and symptoms of overtraining.
E.Listening to your body will assure you of your fitness goals.
F.If far beyond,it’ll take longer to adapt and may cause injury.
G.We generally assume regular intense exercise good for our health.
