Here are four parks in America that offer ideal visiting conditions in the fall.
Natchez Trace Parkway (Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee)
Covering 444 miles between the Mississippi River and Nashville, Natchez Trace Parkway has some of the prettiest scenery in the entire South. The fall season also brings special events along the parkway like the Natchez Balloon Festival (October 18-19) and Dancing with the King (October 18-20) in Tupelo, Mississippi.
Capitol Reef National Park (Utah)
Fall is a harvest season at Capitol Reef National Park — a picture-perfect setting for picnicking with peaches, pears and apples. For a small fee, visitors can self-pick the peaches, pears and apples with ladders and fruit-picking poles provided by the Park Service. Afterward, they can enjoy the fruits of their labor at the nearby picnic area and campground.
White Sands National Park (New Mexico)
Cooler temperatures are just one of the reasons to visit White Sands in the fall. Another reason to visit in the fall is impressive full moons that brighten the unearthly landscapes of this New Mexico desert park. White Sands celebrates the autumn supermoons with ranger-led Full Moon Hikes (September 18 and October 16) and Full Moon Nights that feature live outdoor music, specifically a jazz band on September 17 as well as native American musician and storyteller Randy Granger on October 17.
Joshua Tree National Park (California)

Are you looking for something exciting in your life How about trying a new hobby that gets your heart racing
You might enjoy running, right Well, then you’re already on the right track to becoming a trail runner(越野跑选手). It is not so hard as you think. All you need to do is just take your runs off the pavement and explore some hilly or mountainous trails. Trail running has been popular in recent years and offers a great way to connect with nature while getting an exciting workout.
Not adventurous enough for you How about trying rock climbing Climbers climb walls or natural rock formations, using their strength and problem-solving skills. There’s no age limit for this sport, and it can be a great way to build confidence and overcome fears. For example, Sarah, a young girl from a small town, started rock climbing at the age of 12 and has since fallen in love with the sport. She says, “Every time I reach the top of a climb, I feel a sense of success that’s hard to describe.”
Some people take their adventures to even greater heights by trying wingsuit flying. In this extreme sport, participants wear a special suit that allows them to fly through the air like a bird. It requires a lot of training and courage, as there are significant risks involved. However, for those who are interested in it, there is no feeling like flying freely.

Being in nature is really good for you. Even just seeing nature on your way to school will brighten your day. This is the experience that is being recreated in Birmingham, England.
Once, the area around Birmingham was filled with orchards(果园), resulting in its being called “a city surrounded by blossoms(花朵)”. However, by the 1900s, industrialization(工业化) had begun to take hold, and the orchards were destroyed to make room for buildings and factories. And according to the National Trust, Birmingham has lost 85% of its trees since the beginning of the 20th century.
But on January 17, 2023 that began to change. According to the website Secret Birmingham, a number 11 bus left its stations filled with trees instead of people. All along its 27-mile path, the bus dropped off those trees to citizens, schools, and community groups, who then planted them. All in all, about 600 trees have been handed out.
“Blossom is not only beautiful, but it’s also important for the wellbeing of the environment,” says Lucy Reid, who’s leading the Birmingham project. “It’s also great for pollinators(传粉者), such as bees, which help trees produce fruit, and the trees also help to clean the air.”
This isn’t the first time the National Trust has helped Birmingham blossom. The Trust created “blossoms pop-ups” as part of the Birmingham 2022 Festival. According to the project, blossoming tree installations(装置) were set up in various well-known Birmingham locations such as St. Philip’s Cathedral Square.
The National Trust has also started blossoming tree projects in other UK cities. In 2021, it created the London Blossom Garden, and now the Trust is planting fruit trees in Plymouth, Newcastle, and Nottingham. Its work is important for the protection of the country’s wildlands and climate. However, their Blossoming Birmingham project shows that protecting a country’s nature not only helps the environment but brings joy and beauty to people as well.
28. What led to the loss of orchards in Birmingham
A. Extreme climate. B. Poor management.
C. City development. D. Decreasing production.
29. How does the National Trust help Birmingham blossom in Paragraph 3
A. By filling the buses with blossoms. B. By sending its people to plant trees.
C. By providing trees for people to plant. D. By surrounding bus stations with trees.
30. What is Lucy Reid trying to talk about in Paragraph 4
A. The importance of farming. B. The purposes of their project.
C. The ways to protect the planet. D. The benefits of flowering trees.
31. What does the National Trust contribute to doing according to the last paragraph
A. Beautifying the Earth naturally.
B. Bringing nature back to England.
C. Improving the living conditions for people.
D. Taking the lead in protecting the environment.
D
Urban expansion(城市扩张) has greatly changed the habitats of many animals. Forests are cut down to build houses, rivers are changed to provide water for big cities, and pollution is now a serious problem for many ecosystems. These actions force animals to get used to city life, often causing conflicts when they enter areas where people live to find food or a place to stay.
Environmentalists say that it’s important to create special places called wildlife reserves. These reserves protect animals that are in danger and help keep different kinds of life in nature. Wildlife reserves are like safe homes where animals and plants can live and grow without being bothered by people. Studies show that animals in these protected areas survive better, which helps maintain balance in nature. Every animal, from small insects to large animals, plays an important role in keeping the ecosystem healthy.
In addition to reserves, people are also working on setting up “wildlife corridors”. These are protected paths between places animals live in, which allow animals to migrate safely. Without such corridors, animal groups that live alone in one place lose genetic diversity(基因多样性), which makes them more likely to die out. For instance, large predators like tigers and wolves need big space to hunt and survive. Corridors offer these animals freedom to move around without entering human spaces.
Protecting biodiversity(生物多样性) not only benefits animals but also supports human life. Healthy ecosystems control water flow, clean the air, and stop the climate change, all of which are extremely important for human survival. Therefore, protection efforts not only focus on saving different species, but also make sure our environment stays healthy for everyone.
32. What is one main result of urban expansion on wildlife
A. Fewer people in cities. B. Fewer human activities.
C. Damage to animal habitats. D. More places for animals to live.
33. What is the purpose of wildlife reserves
A. To attract more tourists.
B. To create jobs for local people.
C. To protect animals from being bothered by humans.
D. To allow humans to connect with animals.
34. What is the author’s attitude toward creating wildlife reserves and corridors
A. Supportive. B. Concerned.
C. Indifferent. D. Questioning.
35. What is the main idea of the passage
A. Animals don’t need migration paths as they can get used to cities.
B. Cities should replace habitats to create more space for humans.
C. Urban growth has little effect on animals as they can find new homes.
D. Wildlife reserves and corridors help protect animals and ecosystems.

M: Good evening, everybody. I’m George. I’m so glad that for today’s programme, we have J. K. Rowling to share with us how she became a famous writer. Let’s welcome her.
W: Hi, everybody. I’m J. K. Rowling. I’m so glad to be here. Actually, I began writing stories at the age of six and always daydreamed of becoming a writer. In 1990, when I was stuck for four hours on a train, I dreamt of a boy called “Harry Potter”. Before I started to write about Harry Potter, my husband left me and our three- month-old daughter. So I decided to start writing novels to have a new life and wrote my first Harry Potter novel. I sent my novel to a lot of publishing houses. They doubted my writing skills and rejected me. This went on until the year 1996, when the Bloomsbury publishing house agreed to help me. In 1997, Harry Potter was published, and the character soon became one of children’s most favorite characters. We had to print more copies several times. In 1998, in the month of February, my very first novel was awarded the British Book Award for “Children’s Book of the Year”.
