It was a week after my mom had passed away and I didn’t know how to go on with life. So when I received an email from a friend about a race benefiting cancer research, I ignored it. It seemed to break my heart, as cancer was the disease that had taken my mother away from me.
But something about my friend’s words — “I can help organize the whole thing” — stuck with me. I felt it a duty to agree. In the weeks to come. I managed to re-enter the world of the living. I checked our team’s website daily
feeling proud each time a donation ticked up our total. I knew my mom would have wanted it that way. She was the type who never got defeated. It was this very spirit that helped me get by.
When the race ended. I noticed the runners all had one thing in common: There were big smiles on their faces. They made it look so rewarding and effortless. I wanted in.
So I signed up for another race two months later. Considering I could barely run a mile, it was ambitious. But my friend and I made a training plan so I wouldn’t come in last. I followed it religiously and didn’t let anything get in my way.
Running up and down the city’s hills, I was flooded with memories. I had lived there after college and my mother had visited often. I passed Bloomingdale’s, recalling the time she and I had gotten into a screaming argument there.
I was about to beat myself up when I remembered what Mom had said after her diagnosis of cancer. “I don’t want you to feel guilty about anything.” Her paper-thin hands had held me tightly. A weight lifted from my shoulders.
When the race day arrived, I gave it my all for my mom and for all she had taught me and continued to teach me. As I ran, whenever I felt like slowing down, I pictured her cheering me on. Crossing the finish line, I was filled with her love and a sense of peace.

B. She had no time to join in the event.

D. The success in organizing an event.
6. Which of the words can best describe the author’s mom
A. Passionate and polite. B. Brave and humorous.
C. Strong- willed and caring. D. Outgoing and patient.
7. What might be the best title for the passage
A. How I Got Healed in Running B. The Loss of Sweet Memories
C. What Matters Most in Running D. The Rewards of Great Friendship
C
Though many of us may have been away somewhere nice last summer, few would say that we’ve
“summered”. “Summer” is clearly a noun — a verbed noun.
In our childhood, we all learned the difference between a noun and a verb. With such a clear definition, it was easy to notice the difference. Not so in adulthood, when we are expected to “foot” the bill and “chair” meetings. Chances are that you didn’t feel uncomfortable about those verbed nouns.
“The verbing of nouns is as old as the English language,” says Patricia, a former editor at The New York Times Book Review. Experts found that 20% of all English verbs were originally nouns. And it seems to be snowballing. Since 1900, about 40% of new verbs have come from nouns.
Even though the conversion (转化) is quite common, plenty of language experts disagree with it. William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White have this to say, “Many nouns lately have been pressed into service as verbs. Not all are bad, but some are in doubt.” The Chicago Manual of Style takes a similar standpoint, advising writers to use verbs with great care.
“Sometimes people dislike a new verb because they refuse to accept what is unfamiliar to them,” says Patricia. That’s why we’re comfortable “hosting” a party, but we might feel upset by the thought of “medaling” in sports. So are there any rules for verbing Benjamin Dreyer, copy chief at Random House, doesn’t offer a rule, but suggests that people think twice about “verbifying” (使动词化) a noun if it’s easily replaced by an already existing popular verb. Make sure it’s descriptive but not silly-sounding, he says.
In the end, however, style is subjective (主观的). The easy conversion of nouns to verbs has been part of English grammar for centuries. It is one of the processes that make English “ English”. Not every new word passes into general use, but as for trying to end verbing altogether, forget it.
8. What can we learn about the verbing of nouns
A. It has come into use since a long time ago.
B. It has been supported by many language experts.
C. It is easily replaced by existing verbs in practice.
D. It is more commonly accepted by children than adults.
9. What is language experts’ attitude towards the verbing of nouns
A. Negative. B. Careful. C. Unclear. D. Positive.
10. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs
A. It is impossible to end the verbing of nouns.
B. New verbs will stay in the English language forever.
C. Most people are against using new verbs from nouns
D. There is an obvious rule for changing verbs to nouns.
11. What can be the best title for the text
A. Are all new verbs from nouns
B. Are there any rules for verbing
C. Are you comfortable about a new verb
D. Are “summering” and “medaling” annoying
D
Team of scientists at the Smithsonian HN Institution wants to protect endangered-species on Barth by sending the animals’ frozen skin cells to the Moon.
Under the plan, cell samples from animals would be kept safe using a method called “cryopreservation.” This is when living cells are stored at extremely low temperatures to stop them from breaking down. There is nowhere on Earth that reaches this temperature naturally, However, on the Moon there are craters near the south and north poles that never get any sunlight and are always at-320°F or below.
The team said a special station would need to be built on the Moon to store the frozen samples. There are already stations like this on Earth, including the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, but they require resources like electricity, humans, and specific materials. They are also vulnerable to threats including climate change, fire, and flooding. But stations on the moon. Like Cellskeptat, would not need humans to keep an eye on them or a power source to keep them cold.
The scientists tested their cryopreservation method and successfully froze cells from a fish. They plan to start by preserving wildlife at risk of dying out. If those species went extinct, their cells could be defrosted and used to create a living clone of the animal. Then they would move on to additional species. “Our final goal would be to cryopreserve most species on Barth,” said Mary Hagedorn.
In addition to the freezing technology, the researchers must also determine how they would transport the wildlife skin cell samples to the Moon. The journey would require specially designed packaging that keeps the samples safe while they’re in transportation and also protects them from the harsh conditions of space
The team said that some of the early tests for the project could be done on the International Space Station, a laboratory orbiting 254 miles from Barth. They are also calling for other scientific institutions to join in their effort and help make it a reality.
12. What is the primary goal of Smithsonian HN Institution’s project
A. To design a biological research center.
B. To study the effects of coldness on skin cells.
C. To protect at-risk species by storing frozen cells.
D. To create a database of endangered creatures,
13. What do we know about Svalbard Global Seed Vault
A. It is easily harmed by weather conditions. B. It works better than lunar stations alike.
C. It has carried out successful experiments. D. It depends heavily on natural resources.
14. What do the underlined words “orbiting” in the paragraph mean
A. Designing. B. Circling. C. Changing. D. Exploring.
15. What is one of the challenges the team must overcome for this project
A. The quality of frozen cells. B. The number of species at risk.
C. Support from the society. D. Suitable package for transport.

Good morning! I’m honored to stand here to deliver my speech themed “Save the Wildlife”.
As we all know, our planet is our beautiful home, where wildlife and humans should have lived together
harmoniously. However, more and more wildlife is faced with extinction, whose habitats are becoming smaller as new roads and railways were built. Poaching also puts them at risk of extinction. Many precious species are disappearing at an alarming rate.
We must take action to protect them. Firstly, we should support wildlife conservation organizations. Secondly, do not purchase products made from wild animals. Let’s join hands to ensure a harmonious coexistence with these precious creatures and a sustainable future for our planet.
That’s all. Thank you!
