Summer Camp Rules
Whether it’s your child’s first year at camp, or they are a seasoned camper and need a little refresher, it’s a good idea to go over summer camp rules and guidelines before leaving for camp. Camp rules are in place to keep the camp community safe and camp operations running smoothly throughout their stay.
1. Keep Your Personal Space Clean
Since your child will be in close quarters with many other campers, it’s important that they understand the necessity of keeping their sleeping and living areas organized.
Go over ways for your child to stay organized and tidy before they leave for camp. When packing, make sure to provide a laundry bag to keep clean and dirty clothing separate. Utilize under bed space or put clothes on your shelves or cabinets rather than living out of your suitcase or camp trunk.
It also helps to not over pack. Follow packing list guidelines closely so your child can find what they need without having to dig through piles of clothing that were not recommended. This also helps you child know what they have in their luggage so they pull out the sweatshirt when it gets cold. Instead of thinking there wasn’t one in their bag. Remind your child of their camp account so they can purchase items from the camp store if necessary.
2. Valuables at Camp
As a best practice, we recommend leaving all valuables at home. Even if your child has a bracelet or necklace that they never take off, there is still the chance that it could be lost while swimming or participating in camp activities
If you are thinking about bringing an expensive item of clothing, be prepared for it to gel lost or damaged. You may be better off buying a new, less expensive version. To be on the safe side, don’t let your child bring anything irreplaceable or emotionally valuable to camp.
3. Play Nice
Name calling, fighting, bullying, and arguing are strictly prohibited at summer camp. Camp is a place to make friends, so aggressive behavior is not tolerated. Remind your child that they don’t have’ to be everybody’s best friend, but they do have to be friendly to everyone.
Encourage your child to go into camp with the mindset of making a few new friends, and chances are they will leave camp having made more than a few.
4. Have Fun and Try New Things
At the end of the day, summer camp is about getting out of your comfort zone, trying new things, and having a blast. Before your child leaves for camp, congratulate them for being brave enough to try sleep away in the first place. Let them know that they’ve already won just by trying, and the fun part is just about to begin. Remind them again that summer camp rules exist only to improve the overall camp experience and to create a community of fun.
21. What is the purpose of clarifying the rules of summer camp
A. Enrich children’s summer camp operation.
B. Ensure the safety of children participating in summer camp.
C. Cultivate children’s ability to survive in the wild.
D. Help children develop good cleaning habits.
22. Which of the following behaviors is advocated by the summer camp
A. Take your favorite valuables.
B. Fight with camping friends.
C. Avoid participating in hazardous activities.
D. Keep personal camping supplies in order.
23. What is the passage mainly about

B. Make good friends wherever you are.
C. Follow the rules of summer camp.
D. Get enough sleep before camping.

Year-12 student Noah Little has already sat his first Chinese-speaking exam and said it was “the easiest exam I’ve ever done”. That view is not surprising given the Wagga High School student loves language — so much so he has built a Chinese translation app.
Noah said his love of language was encouraged by his community. “Wagga is a place full of people from different cultures, and sometimes when I meet new people who have trouble speaking English I like to talk to them in their own language,” he said. “I also have a few Chinese friends so I think it will be cool to talk to them in their language.”
The 17-year-old started teaching himself Chinese around five years ago, before taking distance education classes at the start of Year 11. His language ability was also useful in his part-time job at a local Chinese restaurant, where he translated orders for the cooks and customers.
Noah said he also had a basic knowledge of seven other languages. It was while teaching himself languages that Noah got the idea of the translation tool. “I decided to make my own app because there weren’t many around — all the other apps were full of advertisements (广告) and the translation feature (功能) wasn’t powerful enough,” he said.
His app also includes a word of the day feature, lessons on how to write Chinese characters (汉字) and a news feed of important Chinese news.
He said learning computer programming to build the app had been like studying another language. With the end of school around the corner, Noah said he would like to pursue (追求) both his interests in computer programming and languages. “I’m planning to work for a year and save so I can go on to university as I really want to make a career (事业) out of one of these two topics.”
24. What do we know about Noah
A. He began to learn Chinese at 11. B. He failed his first Chinese exam.
C. He likes teaching Chinese to people. D. He gets a lot from learning Chinese.
25. What are included in Noah’s app
A. Advertisements. B. Pieces of world news.
C. Suggestions for memorizing words. D. Ways of writing Chinese characters.
26. What has Noah decided to do shortly after high school graduation
A. Look for a job. B. Attend university.
C. Develop a new app. D. Learn more languages.
27. Which of the following can best describe Noah
A. Curious and creative. B. Humorous and honest.
C. Courageous and caring. D. Outgoing and outspoken.

The twentieth century saw greater changes than any century before:changes for the better, changes for the worse; changes that brought a lot of benefits to human beings, changes that put man in danger. Many things caused the changes, but, in my opinion, the most important was the progress in science.
Scientific research in physics and biology has vastly broadened our views. It has given us a deeper knowledge of the structure of matter and of the universe; it has brought us a better understanding of the nature of life and of its continuous development. Technology in the application of science has made big advances that have benefited us in nearly every part of life.
The continuation of such activitites in the twenty-first century will result in even greater advantages to human beings : in pure science―a wider and deeper knowledge in all fields of learning ; in applied science―a more reasonable sharing of material benefits , and better protection of the environment.
Sadly, however, there is another side to the picture. The creativity of science has been employed in doing damage to mankind. The application of science and technology to the development and production of weapons of mass destruction has created a real danger to the continued existence of the human race on this planet. We have seen this happen in the case of nuclear weapons. Although their actual use has so far occurred only in the Second World War , the number of nuclear weapons that were produced and made ready for use was so large that if the weapons had actually been used, the result could have been the ruin of the human race , as well as of many kinds of animals.
William Shakespeare said , “ The web of our life is of a mingled yarn(纱线), good and ill together .” The above brief review of the application of only one part of human activities—science seems to prove what Shakespeare said . But does it have to be so Must the ill always go together with the good Are we biologically programmed for war
28. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage
(①="Paragraph1" , ②=" Paragraph" 2,③=" Paragraph" 3,④=" Paragraph" 4,⑤=" Paragraph" 5)
A B. C. D.
29. From the fourth paragraph , we can infer that __________.
A. a great many nuclear weapons were actually used for war
B. a large number of nuclear weapons should have been used for war
C. the author is doubtful about the ruin of human beings by nuclear weapons
D. the author is anxious about the huge number of unclear weapons on the earth
30. The underlined word “mingled” in the last paragraph most probably means__________.
A. simple B. mixed C. sad D. happy
31. What you think the author is most likely to suggest if he continues to write
A Further application of science to war.
B. More reading of William Shakespeare.
C. Proper use of science in the new century.
D. Effective ways to separate the good from the ill.

What a Messy Desk Says About You
For some time, psychologists have been studying how personality traits affect health and health-related choices. Not surprisingly, they have found that people blessed with innate conscientiousness, meaning that they are organized and predictable, typically eat better and live longer than people who are disorderly. They also tend to have immaculate offices.
What has been less clear is whether neat environments can produce good habits even in those who aren’t necessarily innately conscientious. To find out, researchers at the University of Minnesota conducted a series of experiments. In the first experiment, they randomly assigned a group of college-age students to spend time in two office spaces, one of which was very neat, the other wildly cluttered (乱堆) with papers and other work-related stuff. The students spent their time filling out questionnaires unrelated to the study. After 10 minutes, they were told they could leave with an apple or a chocolate bar. Those students who sat in the orderly office were twice as likely to choose the apple as those who sat among the mess.
A second experiment, however, found that working in chaos has its advantages, too. In this one, college students were placed in a messy or a neat office and asked to dream up new uses for Ping-Pong balls. Those in messy spaces generated ideas that were significantly more creative, according to two independent judges, than those in offices where stacks of papers and other objects were neatly arranged.
The results were something of a surprise, says Dr. Vohs, the leader of the study. Few previous studies found much virtue in disorder. The broken window theory, proposed decades ago, holds that even slight disorder and neglect can encourage indifference and poor discipline.
But in the study by Dr. Vohs, disordered offices encouraged originality and a search for novelty. In the final portion of the study, adults were given the choice of adding a health “boost” to their lunchtime smoothie that was labeled either “new” or “classic.” The volunteers in the messy space were far more likely to choose the new one; those in the tidy office generally chose the classic version. “Disorderly environments seem to inspire breaking free of tradition,” Dr. Vohs and her co-authors conclude in the study, “which can produce fresh insights.”
The implications of these findings are also practical. “My advice would be, if you need to think outside the box for a future project”, Dr. Vohs says, “then let the clutter rise and free your imagination. But if your primary goal is to eat well or to go to the gym, pick up around your office first. By doing this, the naturally messy can acquire some of the discipline of the conscientious.”
32. The underlined word “immaculate” in paragraph 1 probably means ______.
A. messy B. tidy
C. terrible D. comfortable
33. Which of the following can best explain the broken window theory
A. Chaos begets chaos. B. Misfortune may be an actual blessing.
C. Bad news has wings. D. When a door shuts, a window opens.
34. Which of the following will Dr. Vohs probably agree with
A. More virtue exists in organized people.
B. Creativity results from tidiness and discipline.
C. Disorderly surroundings help to create new ideas.
D. Workers’ good habits guarantee the success of a project.
35. What can we conclude from the study results
A. The naturally neat people tend to be very creative.
B. A messy office will cause quite low working efficiency.
C. Environments can affect people’s way of thinking and behavior.
D. People’s personalities are determined by their working environments.

Can you recognize the moment when you realize you’ve mastered a foreign language It’s not when you get a perfect grade on a grammar test. It’s when you start thinking in that language! ____36____ . Here are some tips that will help you achieve the goal.
Stop the Translating Habit
Don’t try to say something after thinking of a sentence word by word in your own language, and then translating it into foreign words. It’s of little use because the logical(合乎逻辑的) flow of words in your mother tongue won’t sound well in a foreign language. When you’re thinking of something to say, start with the main parts of the sentence: the subject and the verb. ____37____.
Learn Words in Pairs
It’s easier to learn the words when you add them into context(语境), and you connect them with one another. If, for example, you’re learning the word morning in a foreign language, you should also look up for words that go with it, such as good or early. You should also pair it with the opposites and check out some words that have similar meaning. ____38____.
Pay Attention to Grammar
Vocabulary is very important when you’re learning a foreign language, but that doesn’t mean you should forget all about the grammar rules. You can’t start thinking in a non-native(非母语的) language if you haven’t mastered its grammar basics. Make sure to put the rules you learn into practice every single day, and keep track of your progress.
Practice Writing
A writing practice will help you keep track of your progress, but it will also help you remember the things you’ve learned. ____39____. Make sure you use proper grammar. This practice will not only make you a more confident speaker, but it will also help you start thinking in a foreign language.
Practice Speaking and Listening
That’s the final tip that leads you to perfection. Turn speaking and listening into a daily activity. You can listen to audiobooks(有声读物) in the foreign language, and then talk to someone about the impressions. If you don’t have anyone to talk to, just get in an empty room, record your speech and listen to it. ____40____.
A. You’ll surely recognize the signs of progress.
B. That’s the best way to build up a huge vocabulary.
C. You will find yourself better at understanding them.
D. Try to notice and correct the mistakes in your writing.
E. Then, it will be easy for you to build your sentence upon that.
F. Remembering good sentences will go a long way towards writing a good article.
G. And it takes hard work for your inner thoughts to start flowing in a language that’s not native.

It was a quiet Saturday afternoon in the small town of Maple Ridge. I had just left George’s Hardware Store, carrying a few things I needed for some home repairs. I was a bit behind schedule, so I hurried to my car, put the items in the trunk (后备箱) , and then shut it.
As I reached into my pocket for my keys, I realized that I didn’t have them. My heart sank as I rushed to the driver’s side door. Sure enough, my keys and phone were sitting on the front seat, locked inside. “Seriously ” I sighed, kicking the tire.
Just then, a teenager on a red bike rode up. He looked about 16, with messy brown hair and a worn backpack. His bike looked just as worn as the rest of him, but he pedaled (骑车) gracefully and effortlessly. And he had a friendly smile on his face. Noticing I was in trouble, he asked what had happened.
After I explained my situation, he offered his phone at once, suggesting that I call someone for help. Though grateful, I told him that even if I called my wife, who had the spare key, she wouldn’t be able to bring it since this was our only car.
The boy listened carefully, thought for a moment, and asked where my house was. When I told him it was on Morris Street, he glanced at his bike and suggested that he ride over, grab the spare key from my wife, and bring it back.
I hesitated, realizing it would be an 11-kilometre round trip, almost an hour’s ride, and I suddenly felt bad for the boy. But before I could say anything, he handed me his phone and insisted that I call my wife and tell her to have the key ready. His confidence and determination left me with little room to argue. I agreed and made the call.
As soon as I hung up, the boy wasted no time. He jumped over the bike and flew out of my sight, leaving the words “wait for me” before I could answer. I was rooted to the ground, mixed with surprise and gratitude. How lucky was I to meet such a warm-hearted boy! However, as the time passed, a bad feeling came to me again. “What if his bike breaks on the way What if it is a trick ”
An hour later, as I saw the boy cycling toward me, my worries were gone.

A. More virtue exists in organized people.
B. Creativity results from tidiness and discipline.
C. Disorderly surroundings help to create new ideas.
D Workers’ good habits guarantee the success of a project.
35. What can we conclude from the study results
A. The naturally neat people tend to be very creative.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

第二节 读后续写(续写一段,80词,满分15分)
72. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为80左右。

【读后续写答案】An hour later, as I saw the boy cycling toward me, my worries were gone. He was slightly out of breath but beaming with pride as he handed me the spare key. I was overwhelmed with gratitude and relief. “Thank you so much,” I said, my voice filled with emotion. He just shrugged and said, “No problem, happy to help!” We exchanged a firm handshake, and I watched him cycle away, his figure growing smaller until he disappeared around the corner. That day, I was reminded of the kindness that still exists in the world, and I promised myself to pay it forward whenever I could.
