In our daily life, it’s the unexpected acts of kindness that often bring us the most joy. This is a story about one such act that happened in the most unlikely place — a crowded plane.
Kelsey Zwick was traveling to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia with her daughter, who required special medical attention. The journey was filled with the extra things of medical equipment (设备) and the worry of a caring mother. As they settled into their economy seats, a flight attendant came with the sweetest offer. Just at that time, a first-class passenger noticed them and wanted to offer his seat, hoping that it would provide more comfort for them. When hearing that, Zwick was moved to tears by the man’s kindness and generosity.
The flight went smoothly with Zwick and her daughter enjoying the unexpected comfort of first class. However, upon landing, Zwick was unable to find the man, as they lost each other in the crowd. In the hope of thanking him face to face, she detailed the encounter, from the struggles of traveling with a baby and medical equipment to the heartfelt exchange with the stranger. Then she posted the message online, with a beautiful mix of thanks and recognition of the man’s generosity.
The story, once shared, caught fire online, getting over 579,000 shares. This post finally led to the airline connecting Zwick with her benefactor, Jason Kunselman. In an interview, Kunselman shared his true feelings, stressing the importance of kindness. This meeting between Zwick and Kunselman serves as a powerful reminder of the influence of a simple act of kindness. It’s a call to action for all of us to be more observant (善于观察的) and considerate of those around us.

Bed rotting (躺尸) — the practice of spending long periods of time just staying under the covers with snacks, screens and other comforts — is gaining popularity among young people. Some followers view it as a form of self-care, but doctors warn that too much of it could be a “sign of depression (抑郁症)”. Are these extra breaks really wise for one’s spiritual health, or could they be a cause of worry
Dr. Ryan Sultan, a professor at Columbia University in New York, who treats many young people, called the bed rotting trend attractive. “In our culture today, with too much to do, too many expectations and too much productivity, many young people are feeling burned out and aren’t often getting enough sleep. It’s easy to see why taking time off to lie around is attractive,” Sultan said. “In many ways, this is helpful. It’s a chance to get away from real-life problems and clear your head before returning to life in a better state of mind,” he even added.
For the downside, however, he believed a long-term need or thirst for bed rotting could do harm to one’s physical health. Our brains are well-trained for sleep in darkness and wakefulness in light. Spending too many daytime hours in bed — awake or not — could destroy sleep schedules. Once that happens, it is a challenge to fix it. It could also lead to blood pressure problems and obesity. Long-term need for bed rotting could also be a warning sign of depression, according to a mental health expert.
Dr. Marc Siegel, professor of medicine at NYU Langone Health, agreed that while some spare time can be useful in a way, too much contributes to poor motivation (动力). Instead of bed rotting, Siegel recommended proper exercise as a better form of de-stressing. Those who lack the motivation to get out of bed could also try calling or texting a family member for support, socializing with close friends, finding a small task to complete, or reaching out to a medical professional for help.
8. Why are young people fond of bed rotting according to Dr. Ryan Sultan
A. It’s a way to escape stress. B. It helps fix sleep schedules.
C. They’re unwilling to socialize. D. They like popular online things.
9. What might long-term bed rotting bring people
A. Low blood pressure. B. Higher risk of depression.
C. Problems of dietary habits. D. Difficulty in getting to sleep.
10. Which statement will Dr. Mare Siegel agree with
A. Feeling down leads to less motivation.
B. Spare time should be filled with exercise.
C Enriching oneself helps promote motivation.
D. Bed rotting allows people to change expectations.
11. What is the passage mainly talking about
A. Different opinions on how to become motivated.
B. Main causes of the long-term need for bed rotting.
C. Possible problems from lying in bed for extra time.
D. Practical advice for young people to deal with stress.

A new study by researchers at MIT has found that inactive yeast (非活性酵母) can help get rid of lead from drinking water supplies. The study shows that this method works well, even for high levels of pollution. The team has worked out that waste yeast threw by a single brewery (啤酒厂) in Boston would be enough to treat the whole city’s water supply. So compared to traditional methods, this one costs less. The system would not only make the water clean but also change what would otherwise be some waste needing to be got rid of.
Lead and other heavy metals in water are a serious global problem that continues to grow. In the U. S. alone, more than 12,000 miles of waterways are suffering the effect of wastewater rich in heavy metals. What’s worse, heavy metals don’t break down, but continuously exist. They are either impossible or very expensive to completely get rid of by traditional methods. Lead is harmful, even at low concentrations, especially affecting children as they grow. “We don’t just need to cut down lead; we need to get rid of it from drinking water,” says one of the researchers called Stathatou.
The solution found by the MIT team is not a new one. A process called biosorption, in which inactive biological material is used to get rid of heavy metals from water, has been known for years. But the process took effect only at much higher concentrations, at the levels of more than one part per million. “Our study proves that the process can work efficiently (高效地) at the much lower concentrations of typical real-world water supplies,” another researcher named Athanasiou says.
Designing a practical system for processing the water and getting back the yeast, which could then be separated from the lead for reuse, is the next goal of the team’s research. They are also exploring ways of recovering both the yeast and the lead. “We need to carry out further experiments, but there is the choice to get both back. And it will be useful for the world,” Stathatou says.
12. What’s special about the new method for taking away lead from drinking water
A. It is costly but worthy of time. B. It is effective and cheaper.
C. It has been questioned by researchers. D. It has replaced traditional methods.
13. What is the purpose of paragraph 2
A. To introduce the characteristic of heavy metals.
B. To encourage people to protect the environment.
C. To stress the difficulty of taking away heavy metals.
D To state the necessity of getting rid of heavy metals
14 What can we know about the process of biosorption
A. It needs more research. B. Its application is limited.
C. It’s used to sense heavy metals. D. Its study is based on the MIT’s.
15. What does Stathatou think of their future research
A. Unknown. B. Worrying. C. Helpful. D. Adventurous.

47. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night Did he get tired Have doubts Did he want to quit I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news.

C. Enriching oneself helps promote motivation.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. C 11. C

In the U. S. alone more than 12,000 miles of waterways are suffering the effect of wastewater rich in heavy metals.
D. To state the necessity of getting rid of heavy metals
14. What can we know about the process of biosorption
A. It needs more research. B. Its application is limited.
C. It’s used to sense heavy metals. D. Its study is based on the MIT’s.
15. What does Stathatou think of their future research
A. Unknown. B. Worrying. C. Helpful. D. Adventurous.

【答案】 A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. I was informed that I won the first prize in the writing contest and that there would be an award presentation in two days. I was so happy to hear the news that I immediately shared it with my teacher. “I knew you’d win! I am proud of you. You made it!” he said excitedly. Then came the big day. When I was invited to the stage to receive the award, I expressed my thanks to my teacher. I said, “It’s you who make me fall in love with writing, my social studies teacher. Without your recognition and guidance, I couldn’t have written this article. Again thank you very much!”
I went to my teacher’s office after the award presentation. My teacher was waiting for me. Holding my hands, he said “Congratulations! You are a good writer, so keep writing.” “You know I didn’t like writing before, but now I am crazy about it! I will try my best to create good works.” I said seriously. Since then, I have written many good works and now I am a famous writer. I owe my success to my social teacher who is a beacon in my life on the road to writing.
