When traveling to foreign countries, mastering the art of body language is key for perfect travel experience. As a body language expert, it’s easy for me to see how we communicate with those around us without even saying a word.
I especially believe the importance of the universal language of body talk. At most times when traveling abroad, it is the only way that connects every human being, no matter the geographic location. A simple custom or sign of respect is vital to understand before taking flight to your desired destination.
For example, it is customary to simply eat the food that you have before you when we are out at a business lunch. In Asian customs, business lunches are strict. Finishing your plate or eating most of the food you ordered is considered rude in Asian culture.
“Body language teaches us everything about a person,” says Benjamin Wey, a professor at two European universities. “My professional career would be entirely different if it were not for body language and my understanding of it.” Frequently visiting both Europe and the US, Wey has come to understand that internationally, our ability to actively respect cultural customs becomes the currency within business. One key element that Wey has taken away from his travels abroad is “that all people want to be treated with respect.”
So, show your respect-and learn more about the local customs and traditions or the spots on your route. Gather an understanding of what gestures or expressions are considered useful, and avoid those that may be offensive to your new friends.
Though we started with one language in common-body language, the cultures of the world have evolved (演化). It is important to be able to identify and appreciate these differences; it will make our world smaller as a result.
4. Why does the author think body language is important
A. It makes different cultures getting more alike.
B. It can effectively show your respect to others.
C It allows us to connect with people anywhere.
D. It replaces the need for verbal communication.
5. What does the passage advise travelers to do to improve their travel experience
A. Avoid making any gestures at all.
B. Finish the food you order in the plate.
C. Learn to use the local language fluently.
D. Show respect by following local customs.
6. What does the underlined word “offensive” mean in paragraph 5
A. Rude. B. Similar. C. Awesome. D. Practical.
7. What is the best title of the text
A. Cross-cultural Body Language
B. The Traditional Cuisine Culture
C. A Perfect Travel Experience Abroad
D. A Good Way to Learn Foreign Cultures
C
Albert Einstein (1879 — 1955) was one of the greatest and most original scientific thinkers of all time.
Born of Jewish parents at Ulm in Germany, he completed his education in Switzerland and got his Ph. D. at the University of Zurich. He went to live in the United States in 1933 because of the rise of Nazism in Germany and Hitler’s persecution of the Jews.
In 1905, while still at Zurich, he published his Special Theory of Relativity, which was based on things everyone may have noticed. If two trains are standing alongside each other and one train starts to move, a person sitting in the train may wonder whether his own train is moving or the other is moving, and before he finds out what is happening, he can see that one train is moving relative to the other. From this and also from other more complicated facts, Einstein came to the conclusion that all motion (运动) is relative and that there is really no such thing as absolute motion. Some of the other conclusions he drew are that nothing can go faster than light, and that if something such as a ruler was moving faster and faster it would seem to get shorter and shorter as its speed was near the speed of light. By 1915, Einstein had made known his General Theory of Relativity. He also improved on Newton’s theory of gravity. Most of his theories have been tested and found to be true though some may sound strange. For his important work he was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics.
Towards the end of his life, Einstein was asked by a group of students to explain his complicated Theory of Relativity. He said, “When you sit with a pretty girl for an hour, it seems like a minute; but when you sit on a hot stove for a minute, it seems like an hour. That is relativity.”
8. In 1933, Einstein went to live in the United States because _________
A. he loved the U.S more than his own country.
B. he had got some friends there with whom he could work.
C. he wanted to live quietly and happily there.
D he could no longer live in Germany when Hitler came into power.
9. Einstein published his Special Theory of Relativity when he was _________
A. in the United States.
B. in Ulm, Germany after he got his Ph. D
C. still in Switzerland at the age of twenty six.
D. still at the University of Zurich at the age of thirty six.
10. Einstein added that if something such as a ruler was moving, it would seem to get shorter and shorter _________
A. because the ruler itself was short.
B. when it was moving faster and faster.
C. because we can’t see it clearly.
D. because the ruler was broken into pieces.
11. Albert Einstein was world famous for his _________
A. Special Theory of Relativity. B. General Theory of Relativity.
C. improving on Newton’s theory of gravity. D. all his work mentioned above.
D
Cesare Mencarini recently graduated from high school in England with excellent grades. But he was probably more excited about the success he had the previous year—building a working nuclear fusion reactor (核聚变反应堆) at the age of 16.
Fusion energy is created when hydrogen atoms “fuse” (融合) together. Many people see fusion energy as the perfect energy for the future. The fuel (燃料) needed for fusion reactions is cheap, and there’s plenty of it. Fusion could easily provide energy with very little pollution.
As a child, Cesare became interested in electronics, and learned to program computers. When he was in high school, after seeing a video about someone building a fusion reactor, Cesare decided he wanted to build one, too. Initially, the school wasn’t so excited about the idea. But Cesare worked to persuade his teachers. Finally, after a complete safety review, and with an extra advisor offering to help out, the school agreed.
Cesare was a strong student but what troubled him most was that his regular classes weren’t teaching him how to build a fusion reactor. To learn this, he spent countless hours doing research, looking up information on the Internet, and watching videos. He also joined a website where he got advice from scientists with more experience.
Step by step, working long hours with his physics teacher and his advisor, Cesare built the reactor and finished it last June. Over a year has passed since then. Cesare has continued to improve the reactor by trial and error.
He’s one of the youngest students to have built such an advanced fusion reactor. But for Cesare, it wasn't just about the reactor. It was also about learning by doing, and about making connections with other people doing similar things. No matter which college he goes to, he’ll probably continue to change people’s ideas about how much young people can achieve.
12. What do we know about fusion energy
A. It costs a lot to produce. B. It’s rarely available.
C. It fully solves energy shortage. D. It’s environmentally friendly.
13. What led Cesare to build a fusion reactor
A. Insight into programming computers. B. His childhood dream.
C. Inspiration from a stranger’s experience. D. Encouragement from teachers.
14. What was the biggest challenge for Cesare
A. He lacked professional knowledge. B. He couldn’t screen out existing danger.
C. He was unable to figure out some concepts. D. He couldn’t obtain enough fund for research.
15. What can be the best title of the text
A. Cesare Invents the Best Renewable Energy B. Student of 16 Builds Nuclear Fusion Reactor
C. Benefits of Scientific Experiments in Schools D. Cesare’s Outstanding Performance after Class

I was a volunteer for an organisation at the beginning of this year. The organisation is aimed at helping children who suffer from cancer. One day, we were asked to raise money for cancer research and programme funding at an event.
Since my friend Lisa was also a volunteer for the organisation, I went to the event with her. There were many people at the event. After seeing our poster, some people came to us and talked with us. But few people donated money. It was a bit hot that day. Both Lisa and I got really upset.
Half an hour later, Lisa started complaining, “I don’t think we can raise much money today. ”
“Don’t worry. The event lasts for three hours. There is still a lot of time left,” I said, though I also thought poorly of our plan to raise much money that day.
While Lisa and I were talking, a little boy of about eight years old came to us. He stood in front of our poster and started reading.
After a while, he asked, “What is cancer?”
I explained what cancer is. Then I said, “Many people around the world are suffering from cancer. It can be really dangerous. More research is needed to learn about it so that people with it can suffer less. That’s why we’re collecting money for it. ”
“Do children suffer from cancer, too?” asked the boy.
“Yes Many children suffer from cancer. Some of them may die. They need help. ” Lisa said and I nodded.
Hearing that, the boy became sad. Then the boy asked, “How much money have you collected?”
Both Lisa and I were embarrassed to tell him that we didn’t raise much money. At last, we said, “Not much. ”
The boy looked into our donation container and only saw a few one dollar and five dollar bills. The boy said nothing after seeing that and left. Then some girls came to us and we started talking with them. Neither Lisa nor I thought the boy would return. However, about twenty minutes later, the boy did return.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
The boy happily ran to us and asked, “Would you take a donation from children?”

Cesare was a strong student, but what troubled him most was that his regular classes weren’t teaching him how to build a fusion reactor.

“Yes. Many children suffer from cancer.

【答案】The boy happily ran to us and asked, “Would you take a donation from children?” Lisa and I looked at each other. We couldn’t believe such a little boy would care. Though we didn’t believe it, we said “yes”. The boy put his hand in his pocket and took out some five dollar bills. He said, “I just asked for them from my mother. I really want to help the children suffering from cancer. ”
Both Lisa and I were deeply touched. We thanked the boy, but he left soon. Looking at his back, both Lisa and I were greatly encouraged. We wanted to try harder to raise money. So instead of just standing there, we went to people and told them about our programme. At the end of the day, we raised over three thousand dollars, a lot more than Lisa and I had expected in the beginning.
