New Space Missions in 2024
ESA’s Hera mission
The European Space Agency (ESA) plans to launch its Hera spacecraft in October on a mission to return to an asteroid (小行星) system visited by NASA’s DART spacecraft in 2022. Hera is designed to collect data on the targeted system, called Didymos. The spacecraft is expected to closely examine the physical properties of Didymos and measure detailed effects of DART’s crash.
Europa Clipper
NASA hopes to launch its Europa Clipper mission in October. This orbiter is designed to carry out close examinations of Jupiter’s moon Europa. Specifically, the mission will look for signs that the icy moon might hold the right conditions to support life. NASA says the orbiter will fly in orbit around Jupiter and perform repeated close flybys (飞跃) of the icy moon.
Boeing’s Starliner test flight
NASA and Boeing have said they plan to launch the first crewed test flight of the company’s Starliner spacecraft. NASA says it is targeting May 2024 to have Starliner ready for flight. The launch date is to be set later.
The spacecraft completed its first uncrewed flight test to the International Space Station (ISS) last May. But Boeing has experienced several technical difficulties with Starliner during the mission and has worked with NASA to fix the problems as it prepares for the planned crewed flight.
SpaceX Starship test
SpaceX, another NASA’s partner, has been successfully using its rockets and spacecraft to transport astronauts and materials to the ISS since 2020. But the company will be seeking a successful test flight in 2024 for its super- heavy Starship spacecraft.
SpaceX experienced two failed Starship tests in 2023 — one in April and the other in November — which resulted in explosions. The April explosion caused major damage to the launch structure in the state of Texas. SpaceX has said it has been examining the issues related to the explosions and plans to carry out another test of Starship as soon as possible. But it will have to wait until the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) completes its investigation of the launch site damage and approves a new test.
1. What is the main purpose of ESA’s Hera mission
A. To explore a new asteroid system.
B. To collect data on the Didymos system.
C. To return to the moon for further research.
D. To measure the effects of a previous spacecraft crash.
2. Which statement about Boeing’s Starliner test flight is true
A. It will be launched in October 2024.
B. It has already completed its first crewed flight test.

It’s well-known that humor can benefit us both physically and mentally. The idea that laughter is the best medicine has been around since ancient times. In his 1905 book, Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious, Sigmund Freud argued that humor is the highest of the psyche’s defense mechanism (机制), capable of turning anxiety into pleasure.
There are four humor styles. Affiliative humor refers to jokes about things that might be commonly considered funny, which is usually employed to improve relationships or make others laugh. If you’ve ever shared a funny picture with a coworker, you’ve used affiliative humor. Self-enhancing humor involves being able to laugh at yourself, often used as a way for you to deal with stress or difficulties and feel better as a result. Aggressive humor is laughing at the expense of others, which often involves sarcasm (讽刺), teasing, and criticism. Self-defeating humor is the art of putting yourself down to gain favor from your peers, which is possibly used by someone who’s targeted by bullies.
Each style of humor actually carries a different influence, when it comes to mental health. Julie Aitken Schermer, a psychological researcher at The University of Western Ontario, says people using self-enhancing humor are less likely to show signs of loneliness and poor relationships with others. By contrast, both aggressive and self-defeating humor styles can hint at trouble. “We find that self-defeating humor is the most concerning style as it is also linked with loneliness and feelings of not mattering. Those with an aggressive humor style may not experience loneliness as much, however, since they rely on group dynamics (群体动力) in order to make fun of their peers,” says Schermer.
Even if you tend to favor more negative humor styles, there’s no reason to lose heart. Schermer says people can develop a positive, self-enhancing humor style by concentrating on the lighter and more humorous aspects of life. As author Kurt Vonnegut once wrote, “Laughter and tears are both responses to worries and anxieties. I prefer to laugh, since there is less cleaning up to do afterward.”
4. Why is Sigmund Freud’s book mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. To show the importance of mental health. B. To stress the role of humor.
C. To persuade people to stay positive. D. To introduce ancient jokes to us.
5. According to the text, which kind of humor may you use to relieve pressure
A. Affiliative humor. B. Self-enhancing humor.
C Aggressive humor. D. Self-defeating humor.
6. What does the underlined phrase “hint at” probably mean in the third paragraph
A. Signal. B. Explain. C. Prevent. D. Solve.
7. Which of the following will Kurt Vonnegut probably agree with
A Humor is difficult to control. B. Crying is a good way of relief.
C. Humor is a double-edged sword. D. Laughter is the best cure for stress.
C
In recent years, some researchers have been exploring the possibility of so-called “automated valet parking”, a function that would allow a car to drive itself from the entrance of a parking to a free parking spot. While this autonomous driving application gathered great research interest, its reliable realization has so far proved challenging.
Researchers at Mach Drive in Shanghai recently developed OCEAN, an Openspace Collision-freE trAjectory plaNner for the autonomous parking of vehicles. This planner was found to significantly improve the ability of cars to safely reach a parking spot, without colliding (碰撞) with objects on the way. It was designed to overcome the two primary shortcomings of approaches presented in previous studies tackling autonomous parking. The first of these is the inability to accurately predict collisions, while the second involves poor performance in real-time tests.
The OCEAN planner builds on a previously introduced approach called Hybrd Optimization-based Collision Avoidance (H-OBCA), dealing with its primary limitations. Its improved design ultimately improves its ability to avoid collisions, along with its stability and speed in real time. “To avoid collisions, we have redesigned a simpler mathematical model and found a method to deal with the problem, making the solution process faster and more efficient,” Wang, Lu and their colleagues wrote in their paper.
They tested their planner on hundreds of simulated (模拟的) scenes and conducted real-world experiments in public parking areas. Their results were highly promising, as OCEAN was found to outperform a variety of methods for autonomous parking applications.
“Results show that the proposed method has better system performance compared with other standards,” Wang, Lu and his colleagues explained in their paper. “Our method makes it possible to deploy (部署) large-scale parking planner on low computing power platforms that require real-time performance.”
The planner developed by this team of researchers could be improved and tested in additional real-world trials. In the future, it could be deployed by car-making firms, contributing to the introduction of automated vehicle parking technologies.
8. What is the main function of OCEAN
A. To help the car find a free parking spot faster.
B. To drive the car from the entrance to the exit of a parking lot.
C. To enhance the car’s ability to arrive at a parking spot safely.
D. To predict the number of the free parking spots in a parking lot.
9. Two primary shortcomings of previous approaches to autonomous parking are _________.
A. high cost and complex operation.
B. limited application range and high energy consumption.
C. inability to accurately predict collisions and poor real-time performance.
D. difficulty in adapting to different parking lot layouts and long calculation time.
10. What is the author’s attitude towards the OCEAN planner
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Critical. D. Indifferent.
11. What can be the best title for this passage
A. The Development of Autonomous Parking Technologies
B. Mach Drive: A Leading Company in Autonomous Driving
C. OCEAN: A Promising Planner for Autonomous Parking
D. Challenges in Real-World Autonomous Parking Experiments

By understanding how the brain works, educators are better equipped to help students with everything from focusing attention to increasing memory. That’s the promise of brain-based learning, which draws insights from neurology (神经学), psychology, technology, and other fields. Bringing this information to the classroom can help teachers engage diverse learners, offer effective feedback that leads to deeper understanding, and create a rich learning environment that attends to students’ social and emotional needs along with their developing brains.
Chances are that you already know more about brain-based learning than you think you do. When you introduce topics to your students, do you begin by activating previous knowledge That helps learners build on what they already know, strengthening connections in the brain. Do you use tools like graphic (图形的) organizers, songs, or rhymes These strategies help students represent their thinking visually and phonetically (语音上). These techniques all deserve a place in your tool kit because they get the brain prepared for learning.
Patricia Kuhl, a famous language and brain development researcher, puts it this way, “We are entering a great golden age of knowledge about the child’s brain development. In investigating the child’s brain, we are going to uncover deep truths about what it means to be human, and in the process, we may be able to help keep our own minds open to learning for our entire lives.”
Promising as brain-based discoveries may sound, some educators are understandably careful about introducing lab findings in the classroom. Anyone who remembers fallout over the so-called Mozart effect knows that there’s no magic solution when it comes to education. As always, if a particular claim sounds too good to be true, that’s a clue to trust your common sense and engage your own critical thinking.
We’re eager to hear how you apply brain-based learning to your students. Please share your insights and help build the bridge from neuroscience research to engaging classroom practice.
12. How can teachers create a more effective learning environment according to the author
A. By promising more to their students.
B. By paying attention to students’ memory.
C. By taking advantage of how the brain works.
D. By equipping themselves with more knowledge.
13. What is the function of using graphic organizers in teaching
A. To connect old knowledge. B. To keep the class livelier.
C. To introduce a new concept. D. To visualize students’ thinking.
14. What does the author intend to express by mentioning Mozart effect in paragraph 4
A. A deep respect for Mozart. B. A great expectation for class teaching.
C. A cautious attitude to the new method. D. A practical alternative to the new solution.
15. What can be the best title for this text
A. Patterns of Teaching B. Brain-Based Learning
C. Efficient Learning Strategies D. The Application of Neurology

57. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Catch it!” My husband and I shouted, but saw the ball hit the grass near our four-year-old’s feet while he continued kicking at the dirt. It was mid-season, yet he showed no interest in the ball game. We called his name and told him to pick up the ball, but he just stared blankly before going back to kicking the dirt.
As the games went on, it was clear that the coach didn’t want our son to play. We practiced with him, showing him how to hold the bat and throw the ball, but he never understood running the bases or other things we tried to teach.
At the end of the season, our son once again received the “Most Improved” medal, which he had received in other sports before. My husband and I looked at each other and I said, “Well, at least he’s improving,” though it reminded me of other sympathetic gestures from coaches or teachers. I was used to the feeling of our son being different and unable to fit into ball games. The same year, his preschool teacher told me, “He’s not paying attention.” This was not what any parent wanted to hear, but I knew it was true. As a stay-at-home mom, I was tired of having to repeat instructions to him. Initially, I wasn’t sure how much of it was normal, as he was our first child. We decided to have him assessed, but it was a guessing game until he turned six, when a professional evaluation determined that he had Asperger syndrome (幼儿孤独症). My husband always believes our son will be a good boy. Fortunately, he is blessed with good looks, intelligence, and an ability to face the future. There are no obvious signs that he has Asperger’s, apart from frequent lack of eye contact.
A friend invited our son to her son’s birthday party after his diagnosis (诊断), but I turned it down because it was a dirt-bike party and our six-year-old couldn’t ride a regular bike.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
We didn’t go to the party, but at least it inspired us to get our son to try cycling.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】参考范文
We didn’t go to the party, but at least it inspired us to get our son to try cycling. The training wheels of the bike were removed. Our son was unwilling to get onto the bike. His body rocked from side to side with the bike, and he tried desperately to keep balance. The more runs he did, the more frustrated he became. “Don’t lose heart! Just place your hands here on the handlebars and look ahead.” my husband said gently. “I hate this and I really don’t want to learn to cycle any more.” he shouted. Seeing the bitter expression on his face, we had to give it up.
The attempt was not a success, so we decided to expose him to swimming lessons. Unexpectedly, he enjoyed the water so much that he quickly picked up the skill. His swimming coach was delighted to see him excel in the sport and praised his performance. Our son was proud of himself, as he had never been recognized for his abilities before. This experience boosted his self-esteem and motivated him to work harder. We were thrilled to see such positive changes in our son and learnt that he can shine like other normal children when he finds what he is really passionate about.
