Stay Home Studying
17-year-old Liu Yu was a high school student in China. She planned to go back to school on February 17 to prepare for the 2020 college entrance examination. However, the Ministry of Education told people in late January that the spring term for all schools would be put off because of the serious disease in China. So Liu Yu, like all the other students, had to stay at home.
However, Liu and her classmates didn't fall behind their plans and began studying full-time again—only from home. It may have become the largest online teaching experiment the country has ever seen.
To go with students' new learning environment, a "cloud platform (云平台)" was started using on February 17. It provided students with education resources covering all school subjects. But some students had difficulty going to the website or using smart phones. A TV channel by China Education Television started airing classes on February 17. So students could have classes and study online or on TV at home.
But the online platform and TV channel don't just offer school knowledge. Students can also learn how to protect themselves from the disease and psychological health during this period, according to the Ministry of Education.
For some students, the chance to study from home has had some unexpected benefits. Yuan Siyi, who lives in Hubei province, used to get up before 6 am on school days, but since starting online courses, she got more hours of sleep every morning. "I like online teaching because I have more freedom at home," Yuan told TEENS. She began her all-day courses on February 3.
However, online teaching and learning has its weaknesses compared to studying in a traditional classroom. "My motivation (动力) to study is stronger when my classmates are around me and all working very hard," Yuan said.
According to the Ministry of Education, online courses are just a short-time way of learning during the disease. When the new term begins, schools will return to classroom teaching.

(2) How did students have classes and study at home
(3) What can students learn besides school knowledge during this period

Greeting people can be confusing, especially during cross-cultural communication. Will a simple handshake do Should you give a hug or offer a kiss on the cheek People in different countries have their own greetings.
During the outbreak (爆发) of COVID-19, greeting others is becoming even more confusing. The infectious (易传染的) novel coronavirus has challenged traditional greetings such as shaking hands, kissing and hugging. After all, close body contact will increase the chance of spreading the virus.
People have realized the risk and stopped using some traditional greetings. On March 1, for example, German Interior Minister Seehofer turned down a handshake from German Chancellor Merkel. Instead of getting upset, Merkel just laughed and said, "It is the right thing to do."
Health departments (部门) in many countries have also suggested that people change their regular greetings to safer ones.
Shaking hands is a common gesture to show respect around the world. Now in the USA, the elbow bump (碰肘) is the new handshake. USA Surgeon General Jerome Adams introduced the elbow bump, which has been used by political leaders, health officials and professional (职业的) athletes. Brad Hazzard, a health minister in New South Wales, Australia, advised people to pat (拍) each other on the back in place of a handshake.
In France, kissing on the cheek is a common greeting, even between people who have just met. French Health Minister Olivier Veran has advised the public not to do this. Italian authorities (官方) have made the same suggestion. French lifestyle expert Philippe Lichtfus said simply looking into a person's eyes is enough.
In the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, people rub (摩擦) their noses together upon meeting. Their health departments have advised them to wave only.
In the face of such changes, how should you go about changing the way you greet people Australian manner expert Susan Wilson has suggested simply greeting people by looking them in the eye, smiling and saying hello.

Who is the most famous fairy tale writer Many of you may say Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen. There is a big award that takes his name: the Hans Christian Andersen Award (国际安徒生奖). It is the highest award for children's stories.
On April 4, Cao Wenxuan won the 2016 Hans Christian Andersen Award. He is the first Chinese writer to win this important award for children's literature.
Cao Wenxuan was born in 1954 in a small village in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province. Some of his stories are set there. He is now a professor at Peking University. He started to publish children's fiction in 1979. Many of his novels have been translated into English, French, Japanese and Korean.
If you read Cao's stories, you will find beautiful and poetic descriptions of scenery. For example, in The Grass House, Cao writes, "The grass grows toughly. When the sun shines, the grass shines like copper wire (铜线). When the wind blows from the sea, the grass makes surprisingly metal-like sounds."
Cao also uses love as a theme in his stories, and he describes it with great beauty. You can find this theme in Bronze and Sunflower (《青铜葵花》). The ending of the story is sad, but it helps make the story more realistic. "Sadness is a beautiful emotion. It helps kids understand the real world when it is expressed properly," Cao once said.
When Cao creates a story, he does not write specifically for someone. Adults can find beauty in his stories, and the plots he invents tend to impress children. "I tell real Chinese stories, but my stories relate to humans. This might be a key reason why I won this award," he said.

(2) What can you find if you read Cao's stories

A few years ago, my husband and I were on an island for a weekend with our 3-and 4-year-old daughters. As we went back and thought about what to do next, our girls jumped in and told us exactly what they wanted to do. "We want to go to the butterfly museum," said Ariela and Eliana.
As soon as we walked into the main area of the museum, we saw thousands of beautiful butterflies, all flapping (拍打) their colourful wings.
My girls were jumping up and down and I knew we had made the right decision to come to the museum. They were having so much fun. I turned to our museum tour guide because I was curious and asked, "How long do butterflies live " She said, "About ten days." "What can butterflies do in ten days " I asked. The guide stopped, looked at me and said, "They make the world a more beautiful place." "Wow," I said, "I never thought about butterflies like that. Thank you."
After we said goodbye, I couldn't stop thinking about what the guide had said. She was right. We all have something to offer the world with the time we have. When we focus on taking care of each other every day, we can make a difference.
Appreciate (感激) the influence you can have on your family, friends, co-workers and neighbours. Like a butterfly, you have your own way of making the world a little better for everyone.

Running races from the Boston Marathon to the Tokyo Olympics have been put off because of the COVID-19 pandemic (流行病). So Elisha Nochomovitz ran the marathon on his 23-foot balcony (阳台).
Nochomovitz, 32, had been prepared for the Barcelona Marathon on March 15, but when the race was put off until October, he had an idea. On March 17, a day after French President Emmanuel Macron ordered a lockdown for the country, Nochomovitz ran his first marathon on his balcony. "I just thought that it was a crazy idea. When I said to my girlfriend, 'I want to run on my balcony' , she said, 'Do what you want to do, but just clean up the balcony.'"
Nochomovitz thought of those suffering (受难) through the pandemic. He saw the run as an honour to "the real heroes of our planet", the medical professionals who give their lives to save people during the COVID-19 pandemic. "I cannot help them in the hospital, but maybe I can prove to everyone that you can exercise at home."
In total, it took Nochomovitz six hours and 48 minutes to finish the marathon (slower than his best time in marathons which is three hours and 32 minutes). But his girlfriend was there to cheer him on, give him clean shirts and enough water.
Many were encouraged by Nochomovitz's run after his story caught the attention of the public. But there were also "haters" who didn't believe him. Nochomovitz said the haters made him finish another 30 miles on his balcony on March 24. "It was like a real competitor."
Of course, Nochomovitz is a seasoned runner who has completed more than 30 marathons. But this one was certainly different. "It was my perfect race because it was at home, I had everything near to me and I had a lot of time."
Nochomovitz says there are plenty of ways that we can stay active while inside. "I received so many messages from people who were training around the garden and the house." He hopes that his marathon achievement resonates (共鸣) with others and they get the message that they should stay home to stop the spread of COVID-19. He said his neighbour heard about his race and was encouraged to walk on his own balcony.

In ancient China, it was common that the eldest son should look after the parents. But Confucius' elder brother was disabled, so Confucius had to take care of his mother till she died in 535 BC. One of his teachings was that a person should feel or express great sadness for their parents' death for three years. The reason was that they looked after the child completely until it was three. Filial piety (孝道) is very important in Confucius' thoughts.
After he had finished mourning (守孝) for his mother, he began to teach and got followers around him. How many students did Confucius get We are not sure. It is believed that 72 of them were very famous. Some of his students came from poor families, and others were from rich families. He thought everyone should have a right to receive education.
Confucius lived in a time of being unstable (不稳定的), so many of his teachings were connected to social harmony (和谐). He thought, in a family, parents should behave like parents, caring for the young, while children should behave like children, knowing how to look after the old. If such relationships remain, a country will be peaceful and a family will be harmonious (和睦的).
"Do not do to others what you do not want to be done to yourself."
"When one's parents are alive, one should not go far away."
These sayings, together with many others, were beautifully written in classical Chinese. They have been learned by Chinese people over centuries.

Have you ever counted the number of digits (数字) in your mobile phone number Your number has 11 digits. You may sometimes find it hard to remember your mobile phone number. That's because China has the longest mobile phone numbers in the world. Why is that
The 11 digits can be divided into three parts. Each part has a different meaning. The first three digits tell you which mobile phone service provider (提供者) you are using. For example, 135 is for China Mobile Communications Corporation and 188 is for China Unicom. The fourth to the seventh digits tell you where the number is registered (注册). And the last four digits are random (随机的).
The main reason for using 11 digits is that we have the largest population in the world. We once had 10 numbers. But as our population grew, there were not enough numbers for us to use. So we began to use 11 digits starting from 1999. Eleven digits can be used to make tens of billions of mobile phone numbers. That's enough for each person to have seven or eight phone numbers to use in China.
And mobile phone numbers can be recycled. Usually, the service provider will reuse a canceled number after three to six months. If you call a number that you haven't contacted (联系) for a long time, you may find that its owner has changed.
Besides China, Britain and Japan also use 11-digit mobile phone numbers. But their numbers always start with 0. So they cannot create as many numbers as we can. Countries like the United States, Australia and India use phone numbers with 10 digits. Canada's mobile phone numbers are perhaps the shortest in the world: they use seven digits.

"Pull up the window shade. I want to see," Johnsy ordered, quietly.
Sue obeyed.
After the beating rain and strong wind that blew through the night, there yet stood against the wall one ivy (常春藤) leaf. It was the last one. It was still dark green at the center. But its edges (边缘) were colored with yellow.
"It is the last one," said Johnsy. "I thought it would surely fall during the night. I heard the wind. It will fall today and I shall die at the same time."
"Dear, dear!" said Sue. "Think of me, if you won't think of yourself. What would I do "
But Johnsy did not answer.
The next morning, the ivy leaf was still there. Johnsy lay for a long time, looking at it. And then she called to Sue, who was preparing chicken soup.
"I've been a bad girl," said Johnsy. "Something has made that last leaf stay there to show me how bad I was. It is wrong to want to die. You may bring me a little soup now."
An hour later she said, "Someday I hope to paint the Eiffel Tower."
Later in the day, the doctor came, and Sue talked to him in the hallway.

The next day, the doctor said to Sue, "She's out of danger. You won. Nutrition (营养) and care now—that's all."
Later that day, Sue came to the bed where Johnsy lay, and put one arm around her.
"I have something to tell you, white mouse," she said. "Mr Behrman died of pneumonia today in the hospital. He was sick only two days. They found him the morning of the first day in his room downstairs helpless with pain. His shoes and clothing were completely wet and icy cold. They didn't know where he had been on such a terrible night. And then they found a lantern, still lighted. And oil paints and a painting board with green and yellow colors mixed on it. And look out of the window, dear, at the last ivy leaf on the wall. When I was not adding little things to my new home, I was busy learning about the animals and plants on the island, and about myself.
I discovered that the birds that lived in holes in the rocks were good to eat.
One day I found an old bag that I wanted to use to store things in. Some old corn fell out of this bag and made roots in the dirt. Soon green barley grew from the seeds. When I saw these plants, I cried. They reminded me of England. When I was young I wanted to leave England for a life of adventure at sea, but now that I was trapped alone, I only wanted to return.
One day, when I was sitting by my little cave, I heard a terrible noise. The next moment much dirt came falling down the hill. There was so much of it that I was afraid it would swallow (吞没) me! I ran away and climbed over my fence using a ladder I had made. I realized that the island was being taken by a terrible earthquake.
The earthquake soon ended, but then a terrible storm began. The sea became black and violent (猛烈的) and full of huge waves that crashed onto the beach. Thunder roared and lightning hit the water. The storm lasted for three hours, but when it finished, it began to rain. This was not the gentle, calm rain of England, but a rain so hard and terrible that I had to cut a hole in my fence to let the water pour out. Otherwise, my house would have been drowned (淹没) and me with it!
