People in daily life usually wash their produce before eating to remove pesticide residues (农药残留物). But are your fruits and vegetables really clean enough to eat Now, 14-year-old Sirish Subash from Georgia has won the 2024 3M Young Scientist Challenge for inventing an AI-based handheld pesticide detector that is very accurate in detecting pesticide leftovers on food. The ninth grader at the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology in Snellville has received the title “America’s Top Young Scientist”.
Now in its 17th year, the challenge supports middle school students who think creatively and apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) principles to make inventions. When the finalists are chosen, they are paired with a 3M scientist who guides them over the summer to help take their ideas from just concepts to models.
Sirish spent four months competing against nine other finalists. The finalists had to complete a series of interactive challenges and were evaluated on their innovation, application of STEM, as well as their ability to inspire others.
“This year’s Young Scientist Challenge finalists have shown an incredible ability to develop creative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges,” Torie Clarke, the chief public affairs officer, said in the press release. “I am beyond impressed and inspired by their intelligence and their scientific minds.”
Two other finalists included second-place winner Minula Weerasekera from Beaverton, Oregon who developed a real solution for storing energy longer and third-place winner William Tan from Scarsdale, New York who developed a useful AI smart artificial reef (礁) to protect biodiversity underwater.
It was reported that Sirish’s journey to winning the award came from watching his mother washing vegetables and fruits and warning him to always do so. He wondered whether washing actually made a difference. And he tested the device on more than 12,000 food samples including strawberries, apples, tomatoes and spinach. The device works by shining light on the surface of the produce and measuring the wavelengths that bounce back.
4. What is the main purpose of Sirish Subash’s invention
A. To help produce pesticides. B. To make people’s food safer.
C. To water fruits and vegetables. D. To promote the study of science.
5. How do the finalists develop their inventions
A. By changing scientists’ ideas. B. By receiving guidance from scientists.
C. By applying concepts provided by scientists. D. By drawing inspiration from scientists’ models.
6. What do the inventions of the three finalists have in common
A. They change people’s habits. B. They enhance energy efficiency.
C. They solve some practical problems. D. They protect the underwater environment.
7. What does the last paragraph mainly describe about Sirish
A. How he measured his device. B. Who taught him to do research.
C. Why he developed interest in science. D. What inspired him to create the device.

Microplastics are inescapable. In the human body, they’ve shown up in blood and lungs. Now, scientists have also discovered the tiny pollutants in brain tissue, specifically the olfactory bulb (嗅球) that sits above the nose. They shared their findings on Monday.
Humans have two olfactory bulbs located in the forebrain, which are connected to each nasal cavity (鼻腔) by the olfactory nerve. Olfactory bulbs help detect and process smells, passing information from the nose to the brain. Microplastics have been found in human brains, according to recent research that has not yet been peer-reviewed.
The new findings raise concerns among researchers that the olfactory pathway might allow microplastics to access the brain and potentially reach brain areas beyond the olfactory bulb.
For the study, the team sampled olfactory bulb tissue from 15 patients. The patients in the study had died at ages ranging from 33 to 100. Eight of the samples contained microplastics, or bits of plastic less than five millimeters long. The researchers found 16 total plastic fibers and particles (微粒) made of some chemical substances. The most common was a type of plastic that’s used widely in clothes, furniture, rugs, packaging and more.
The microplastics the researchers found are “much smaller than those of several other studies that have determined the presence of microplastics in human organs, such as kidneys, liver, etc,” study co-author Luis Fernando Amato-Lourenco says. The findings don’t come as a surprise to the team, considering the common presence of microplastics. In addition, the nose’s job is to prevent dust, particles and other substances from reaching the lungs, so it makes sense that nasal tissue would also capture tiny plastics.
But it remains unclear whether microplastics can reach the brain via the olfactory pathway. The potential consequences of having microplastics in the human body are also mostly unknown, though some studies suggest they could be harmful to human health. The particles are there, but we don’t know anything about what they’re doing.
8. What is the role of the olfactory bulb
A. It helps find and deal with smells. B. It clears the air’s dust and particles.
C. It connects the nasal cavities to the lungs. D. It prevents microplastics from entering the brain.
9. What might show the existence of microplastics in human brains
A. The very sticky blood in human brains. B. The sensitivity of the olfactory pathway.
C. The detection of microplastics in the lungs. D. The presence of microplastics in the olfactory bulb.
10. What was the main finding of the study in paragraph 4
A. The size of the microplastics. B. The age range of the patients.
C. The variety of microplastics found around. D. The universality of microplastics in the samples.
11. What can we infer about the probable results of microplastics
A. They require further research. B. They are well understood and documented.
C. They have nothing to do with human health. D. They have been proven to cause significant harm.
D
First-edition copies of Jane Austen’s completed novels are on display in the home where the beloved author spent years writing and revising. The rare books are part of a new Permanent exhibition, “Jane Austen and the Art of Writing”, at her family’s former cottage in Chawton, a village located some 50 miles from London. Austen lived in the house during the last eight years of her life. She wrote or revised all six of her completed novels there: Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion.
For the first time, all six first-edition novels will be on display together at Jane Austen’s House, which is now a museum. They include a copy of Emma, copies of Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, and a copy of Sense and Sensibility with the publisher’s original binding.
The novels appear on display in a 12-sided case built for the new installation, a tribute to Austen’s small 12-sided wooden table she often worked at. They deserve it. The rare books are part of the museum’s preparations for the beloved author’s 250th birthday celebrations in December 2025. Lizzie Dunford, director of the museum, is excited for visitors to have the unique opportunity to be quite literally surrounded by the books and objects that influenced Austen.
The show also features other objects from Austen’s life that are connected to her writing. Additionally, some of Austen’s letters are on view at the exhibition, which examines how her correspondence and love of letter-writing informed her fiction. Visitors will also see a film about The Watsons, one of Austen’s unfinished novels, and how the original manuscript (手稿) throws light on her writing process.
“This exhibition is a deep dive into Jane Austen’s creative process,” says Sophie Reynolds, the head of collections, interpretation and engagement at the museum. “We hope that it will unlock a new way for our visitors to understand Jane Austen as a dedicated, driven and professional writer, and to explore how her life and living arrangements affected her writing in the very house in which she lived and wrote.”
12. What is the focus of the exhibition
A. The history of the museum. B. The life and works of Jane Austen.
C. The design of Jane Austen’s House. D. The birth and evolution of English literature.
13. What does the underlined word “tribute” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Loss. B. Threat. C. Honor. D. Insurance.
14. What does Sophie Reynolds try to convey about the exhibition in the last paragraph
A. Its preparations. B. Its barriers. C. Its process. D. Its purpose.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Reveal Jane Austen’s Family and Early Life.
B. Jane Austen’s Original Letters Are on Show.
C. Celebrate Jane Austen’s 250th Birthday with Exhibits.
D. Jane Austen’s Finished and Unfinished Novels Are Published.

Michael’s life had always been full of simplicity and sacrifice. Growing up in a home where every penny counted, he had learned the value of frugality (节约) from a young age. Although his family was not wealthy, he never complained. He understood the struggle and was grateful for what he had. His parents worked hard to make ends meet, and Michael saw their devotion as a testament to their love. He dreamed of having his own business and earning money to help the needy people in the future.
At school, Michael arranged his life properly and studied hard for his dream. He would bring a homemade lunch, just some pieces of bread, unlike the delicate sandwiches and snacks his classmates enjoyed. He would eat quickly and then read a book attentively. His family’s tight budget was also evident in their clothing. His uniform was worn and faded, and he wore the same pair of shoes until they seemed to separate from the uppers with each step. Despite some embarrassment, Michael held his head high, never feeling inferior.
Michael’s academic performance, however, was a source of pride that transcended (超越) his material circumstances. In the class full of harmony and love, he tried his best to learn, and his grades were a reflection of his commitment to his education. He knew that knowledge was a path to a better future, where he could lift his family out of poverty and give back to the community that had supported them in their time of need. During his spare time, he always helped his classmates whenever they encountered problems.
With limited resources, Michael had never known the joy of a birthday party. Sometimes, he thought to himself, “When can I have a birthday with a big cake ” Luckily, this term, the class teacher, Mr Smith, had assigned a task for the monitor to celebrate each child’s birthday at school. The monitor of the class, Joey, had noted down everyone’s birthday, and Michael’s birthday was next Monday.

A Chinese Painting Class for Exchange Students
Recently, our school has established a Chinese painting class specifically for exchange students. The aim of this class is to introduce international students to the rich cultural heritage of Chinese art and to foster cross cultural exchange.
The curriculum includes various traditional Chinese painting techniques such as ink wash painting and the use of traditional brushes and rice paper. Exchange students will learn to paint classic subjects like landscapes and bamboo, gaining hands-on experience in this ancient art form.
This initiative is significant as it not only provides exchange students with a unique cultural experience but also promotes mutual appreciation. By participating in this class, they can develop a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and build lasting friendships with their peers.

The following Monday morning, Michael saw Mr Smith before him walking up to the classroom. He quickened his steps because the bell was about to ring. Mr Smith felt something and turned back with a warm smile. “Good morning, Mr Smith,” Michael greeted. Joey had decorated the room with colorful balloons. As Michael entered, his classmates surrounded him, singing, “Happy Birthday!” Amid cheers and laughter, they presented him with a homemade cake, symbolizing their unity and care. Michael felt so loved that he cried. From then on, he studied even harder despite all the difficulties and decided to do something in return one day.
Years later Michael became a successful businessman and started a kindness club in his old school. With a collection of valuable memories in his mind, he donated large amounts of money to set up the platform where students could share their own acts of kindness and inspire others to do the same. The club quickly gained popularity, and soon students from all grades participated in various activities, from sending clothes to their schoolmates in need to organizing food drives for the local community. Michael’s club helped a lot of people, and the ripple effect was felt throughout the school and beyond, proving that kindness could make a difference.
