This is an excerpt ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) from Emma Watson’s speech at the United Nations headquarters.
Today we are launch ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ing a campaign(called "He For She"). I am reaching out to you because we need your help. We want to end gender inequality, and to do this, we need everyone involved. This is the first campaign of this kind in the UN. We want to try to involve as many men and boys as possible to be advocates for change.
I started questioning gender-based assumption a long time ago. When I was 8, I was confused being called bossy because I wanted to direct a play that we put on for our parents, but the boys were not. When I was 14, I started to be sexualized by certain elements of the media. At 15, my girlfriends started dropping out of a lot of sports teams because they didn’t want to appear masculine. At 18, my male friends were unable to express their feelings.
I decided that I ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) was a feminist. This seemed uncomplicated to me. But my recent research has shown me that feminism has become an unpopular word. Women are choosing not to identify as feminists. Why has the word become such an uncomfortable one I’m from Britain and I think it is right that I am paid the same as my male counterparts. I think it is right that I should make decisions about my own body. I think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies and decisions that will affect my life. I think it is right that socially, I am afforded the same respect as men.
But sadly, I ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )can say that there is no one country in the world where all women can expect to receive these rights. No country in the world can yet say that they have achieved gender equality. These rights, I considered to be human rights, but I am one of the lucky ones.
My life is a s ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )heer privilege because my parents didn’t love me less because I was born a daughter. My school did not limit me because I was a girl. My mentors didn’t assume that I would end up nowhere because I might give birth to a child one day. These influences were the gender equality ambassadors that made me who I am today. They may not know it but they are the inadvertent feminists who are changing the world today. We need more of those.
Men, I would like t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )o take this opportunity to extend you a formal invitation. Gender equality is your issue, too. Because to date, I’ve seen young men suffering from mental illness, unable to ask for help for fear it will make them less of a man, or less of men. I’ve seen men made fragile and insecure by distorted sense of what constitutes male success. Men don’t have the benefits of equality, either. Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive, both men and women should be free to be strong. This is what "He For She" is about. It’s about freedom.
You might be t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )hinking: who is this Harry Potter girl What is she doing at the UN I’ve been asking myself at the same thing. All I know is that I care about this problem and I want to make it better. And having seen what I’ve seen and given the chance, I feel my responsibility to say something. Statesman Edmund Burke said all that is needed for the forces of evil to triumph is for good men and women to do nothing.
In my ner ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )vousness for this speech and in my moment of doubt, I told myself firmly: If not me, who If not now, when If you have similar doubts when opportunities are presented to you, I hope those words would be helpful. Because the reality is that if we do nothing, it will take 75 years, or for me it will be nearly 100 before women can be expected to be paid as same as men for the same work. 15.5 million girls will be married in the 16 years as children. At current rate, it will be until 2086 before all rural African girls can have secondary education. We are struggling for a uniting world, but the good news is we have a uniting movement. It is called “He For She”. I am inviting you to step forward, to be seen and to ask yourself: if not me, who If not now, when
Thank you.

It had been a di ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )fficult move. I'd left my family and friends in Indiana, the beloved state where I'd lived most of my life. My new home in Florida was thousands of miles away from anything I knew. It was hot— all the time. Jobs were hard to come by, but I was up for almost any challenge.
At last, I taught ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )in a special school where students have severe learning and behavioral difficulties.
Another teacher ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )and I had spent weeks teaching the children appropriate behavior for public outings. Unexpectedly, only a few students, including Kyle, had not earned the privilege of going. He was determined to make his disappointment known.
In the corrido ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )r(走廊) between classrooms, he began screaming, cursing, spitting, and swinging at anything within striking distance. Once his outburst died down, he did what he'd done when he was angry at all his other schools, at home, even once at a juvenile detention(拘留) center. He ran.
People watched ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) in disbelief as Kyle dashed straight into the heavy morning traffic in front of the school.
I heard someone shout, "Call the police!"
But I ran after him.
Kyle was at least a foot taller than me. And he was fast. His older brothers were track stars at the nearby high school. But I could run long distances without tiring. I would at least be able to keep him in my sight and know he was alive.
After several bl ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ocks of running directly into oncoming traffic, Kyle slowed his pace.
He took a shar ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )p left. Standing next to a trash bin, Kyle bent over with his hands on his knees. I must have looked ridiculous. But his was not a look of fear. I saw his body relax. He did not attempt to run again. Kyle stood still and watched me approach. I had no idea what I was going to say or do, but I kept walking closer.
He opened his m ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )outh to speak when a police car pulled up, abruptly filling the space between Kyle and me. The school principal and an officer got out. They spoke calmly to Kyle, who willingly climbed into the back of the vehicle. I couldn't hear what was said, but I didn't take my eyes off Kyle's face, even as they drove away.
I couldn't help ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )but feel that I had failed him, that I should have done or said more, that I should have fixed the situation.
I shared ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )my feelings with a speech therapist who was familiar with Kyle's history. "No one ever ran after him before, Rachel, "she said. "No one. They just let him go."
Things changed ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) the day he ran and I ran after him, even though I didn't have the right words, even though I wasn't able to save him from the mess he was in. It was the day I didn't throw my hands in the air and decide he was too fast, a waste of time and effort, a lost cause. It was the day my mere presence was enough to make a profound difference.

Money matter ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s, no matter who or where you are. So when China’s currency the yuan was devalued against the US dollar for three straight days in mid-August, the world felt the effects. As CNN put it: “If China sneezes, the world catches a cold.”
Why does it matter so much
The exchange rate ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )is the term for the comparison of two currencies. It says how much one currency is worth in terms of (换算) the other.
“Exchange rates pla ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )y an important role in a country’s level of trade. It is one of the most important determinants of a country’s relative level of economic health,” wrote Jason Van Bergen of . A higher currency makes a country’s exports more expensive and imports cheaper, and vice versa (反之亦然).
Devaluation means th ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e same amount of RMB can be exchanged for fewer USD. For example, on Aug 11, the exchange rate of RMB to USD was 6.23, which meant $1 was worth the same as 6.23 yuan. Two days later, the rate changed to 6.4, meaning the value of RMB had dropped by 2.7 percent.
So what does a weaker currency mean for our lives
It first affects th ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ose who want to travel to, or study in, the US. If your former classmate is leaving for a preparatory (预科) school in the US at the end of August, it now costs about 1,800 yuan more to exchange currency for 10,000 US dollars than it did earlier this month. However, since many currencies have decreased in value, the value of yuan is still relatively high despite the recent devaluation. This means it costs 1,200 yuan less to get 10,000 Canadian dollars now than it did in March.
Even if we don’t have ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )plans to travel abroad, though, we could still be affected. For example, your mother will have to pay more if she buys directly from overseas websites with US dollars. And chances are that imported chocolate and potato chips will soon be a bit more expensive in your local supermarket.
However, the weaker yuan is good news for Chinese exporters. It makes Chinese exports less expensive and it could boost the overseas sales that have been among the main reasons for China’s economic growth during its rise over the past 30 years.
Just as Erik Britton of Fathom, a London-based economic consulting firm, told The Guardian: “We’re all going to feel it: we’ll feel it through commodities, not just from China but from everywhere that has to compete with it; and we’ll feel it through wages.”
“The devalued y ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )uan will force China’s Asian rivals, such as Indonesia and South Korea, to compete even harder,” wrote Heather Stewart, economics editor of The Guardian. “The result may be cheaper Christmas presents.”
59. If the excha ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )nge rate of RMB to USD increased from 6.5 to 6.7, how much more percent would you pay when you bought a bag worth $100
A. 3.1 B. 2.7 C. 5.4 D.20.0
60. The passage implies that ___________________.
A. The yuan’s ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )devaluation has a great impact on all the countries in the world.
B. The yuan’s devaluat ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ion contributes a lot to China’s economic growth.
C.. Chinese exports sell well overseas because of their high quality.
D. Exchange rate ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s are the most important factor determining a country’s relative level
of economic health
61. According to the ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )passage, it can be learned from the passage EXCEPT___________
A. People who w ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ork in Fathom will be greatly affected on account of the weaker yuan.
B. The higher China’s ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )currency is , the less expensive potato chips from America become.
C. In March p ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )eople spent 1,200 yuan more to get 10,000 Canadian dollars than they do today because Canadian dollars increased in value.
D. China’s cu ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )rrency’s devaluation against the US dollar in mid-August makes students studying in America pay more school fees.

第一部分: 任务型阅读 (共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
Equal Opportunities for Quality Education
It is widely accepted that human resources are playing a very important part in China’s economic growth. Education, which greatly affects the qualities of human resources, has gone through rapid developments in recent years.
Last year, China h ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ad more than 2 million graduates from colleges or universities, and another 3.5 million graduates from vocational schools.
Despite the great de ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )velopments in education, in the era of reform, lawmakers expose and criticize many problems in the developments of education, which trouble, if not anger, the public.
One of the most g ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )laring problems is that in China’s vast rural areas, even the most basic education is not available to some children. And elsewhere, even if they have access, the facilities available for them are still a far cry from those in cities.
Official statisti ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )cs show that at the primary stage, there are a big number of rural students who drop out of school because they do not have the money to pay their tuition fees.
At college level, there have been some big increases in tuition fees over the last few years. So, some students from rural areas have also been forced to abandon their dreams.
China has a lo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ng tradition of valuing education and Chinese parents are willing to save each and every penny to support their children’s schooling. But in a nation of more than 1.3 billion people, upholding equal opportunities in the education sector is a discouraging task.
The central gove ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )rnment is dedicated to quickening the development of the cause. It will cancel rural school fees and offer the children in poverty-stricken areas financial support so they can all enjoy the equal education and complete the nine-year compulsory schooling programme.
The most important ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) part of the issue lies in the amount of cash put into it. On the other hand, it is more than an issue of fiscal input﹙财政收入﹚. The unbalanced distribution of resources between rural and urban schools risks slowing down the future of China’s vast rural areas, where two thirds of the population live.
Education is undou ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )btedly the long-term lifeline of citizens. Good education promotes more than personal well-being or the fulfillment of individual ambition. As individual ability grows, the nation will become stronger and more prosperous.
Equality in educa ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )tion is vital to the sustainability of our nation’s economic progress. It has a big influence on every citizen’s quality of life, so the government must do all it can to achieve this goal.
An overview of education in China As China’s economy ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) grows, education, which has a great effect on the qualities of human resources, has ___1___ great developments.

The annual campus c ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ultural festival has drawn back its curtain again. A discussion has been put forward whether it is necessary to hold the campus cultural festival again.
Some students be ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )lieve that campus cultural festival can offer a wonderful stage for students to show their talents. Apart from helping students promote their interest in study, a series of activities also enrich the campus culture and make campus atmosphere more active.
However, some stud ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ents hold different views. They emphasize that they have been kept busy with their study and have no time to spare for the activities of the campus cultural festival. They also state that they can not benefit much from some activities, which in their opinion have little to do with their study.
From my point ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) of view, holding the campus cultural festival is a must. On the one hand, more students will be motivated to develop their potential abilities which will make them qualified for their future positions. On the other hand, students will find it a good chance to relax themselves as well as gain much knowledge that can’t be found in the book.
