With sensors at appropriate places, the chair alarms the user when their sitting posture is wrong. Kulsoom dreamed up this idea after being regularly criticized by her mother for her bad posture. She thought that while it may not be possible to be reminded again and again by someone for sitting wrongly, this task can be done by the chair itself.
Sudden fall detector
Soumya Ranjan Behera, BTTS Upper Primary School.
The wearable device alarms others when the user falls suddenly. It is useful for old people and those suffering from fits, epilepsy (癫痫), etc. It will help keep an electronic eye on one’s loved ones. When I saw the documentary ADHD (多动症): Not Just for Kids, I was in tears after 20 minutes -the stories being told sounded much like my own. I’m in my 40s, I had read everything there was in health and science and I had no idea that the symptoms (症状) I had experienced all of my life were anything but normal. How had I missed this I called the doctor to get assessed. I must have sounded desperate on the phone; they took me right away.
Later, I researched everything I could about ADHD. It became clear that my misunderstanding and ignorance about the disorder had misled me. A million thoughts, a million regrets. Finally, I told myself I couldn’t change the past, but I could share the fact that ADHD can look much different from the super active child practicing back flips (后空翻) off of a chair.
As for me, things went another way around: I was a young girl, quietly sitting at my school desk, pretending to listen to the teacher. Meanwhile, I was watching and drawing the bird that landed in the tree outside. And I was rereading entire chapters of my textbooks and taking extensive notes because I couldn’t remember what I had just read because I was thinking of the bird I had seen earlier
Later in life, I’d sit at the kitchen table, staring out the window. There’s no telling how long it will take. Thoughts rush in from yesterday, today and tomorrow. I need to make dinner, take the dog for a walk, the kids will be home soon. But I can’t move. I know that I should, but I can’t. Afterward, I berate myself, unable to understand why I didn’t get up, why I wasted so much precious time, so much of my life doing nothing, it seems.
Since being treated, I have an inner calmness that is new to me. Medication doesn’t organize my day; it doesn’t remind me to pick up the kids or walk the dog. However, it allows me to move when I’ve been staring out the window for too long.
24. What did the author learn from the documentary
A. She might have been an ADHD patient.
B. She was wrongly assessed by many doctors
C. She had never experienced any symptom of ADHD
D. She was a very problematic child during school years.
25. Why does the author share her early experiences in paragraphs 3-4
A. To offer possible causes of ADHD B. To make it clear how ADHD develops
C. To show ADHD has more than one form. D. To describe ADHD symptoms in children.
26. What does the underlined word “berate” mean in paragraph 4
A. adjust. B. blame. C. push. D. challenge.
27. How has the treatment affected the author
A. She has learned some basic life skills B. She has allowed herself more free time.
C. She has become motivated to take action. D. She has developed more patience with her kids
C
Based on bone and tooth records, mammoths (猛犸象) were thought to have gone extinct about 12,000 years ago. But a new genetic sampling technique suggests the great beasts may have stuck around a lot longer. The story is in the soil.
Bones are rich sources of prehistoric genetic information, but not the only ones; items ranging from shed Ice Age skin cells to pine needles can contribute to the genetic record stored in dirt. Paleogeneticists (古遗传学家) have been analyzing “environmental DNA” from soil for a long time, but getting rid of non-DNA material without destroying these fragile clues is daunting (使人气馁的).
“Environmental samples contain a huge range of other chemical substances that are hard to separate from the DNA,” says McMaster University geneticist Tyler Murchie. “We can’t afford to lose whatever we can get.”
In the new approach, soil samples are got and then broken into smaller portions, stirred and run through a “cold spin method” to separate as much DNA as possible. The DNA is then compared against an existing genetic library to detect species matches
The method is limited because researchers using it need to know what DNA to look for. If a saber-toothed cat species is not already in the genetic library, the analysis cannot detect that animal. For known species, however, the process may yield exciting information. In their study, the researchers detected about 2,100 kinds of plants and 180 animals.
Not yet published results from other field sites are yielding similar results, Murchie says, and future fossil discoveries could strengthen the case. “We can use this approach to identify species in places and times we never knew they existed,” he adds.
28. Why does the author mention “mammoths” in Paragraph 1
A. To present a fact. B. To show us an extinct animal.
C. To correct a mistake. D. To introduce the topic of the passage.
29. Which word can best describe the work of getting rid of non-DNA material
A. Challenging. B. Interesting. C. Boring. D. Satisfying.
30. What is the disadvantage of the new method
A. It is very slow. B. It can’t detect unknown animals.
C. It is not very accurate. D. It can only be carried out in the genetic library.
31. What is the text
A. A news report. B. A short story. C. A book review. D. A research report.

Wild African elephants may break sleep records for mammals (哺乳动物). New data show that they seem to survive on about two hours of shut-eye a night. Much of that sleeping took place while they were standing up. The animals lie down to sleep only once every three to four nights.
Trying to figure out how much wild elephants sleep just by watching them 24 hours a day is tricky, especially in the dark. Much of what scientists had known about sleeping elephants came from animals living in zoos, notes Paul Manger, who is a brain researcher at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa. In zoos, elephants have been recorded sleeping from about three hours to nearly seven during a 24-hour period. Using electronic monitors on African elephants in the wild, however, has turned up more extreme behavior.
Manger’s team implanted (植入) activity monitors in the trunks (象鼻) of two elephants. Both were female leaders of their herds in the Chobe National Park. Trunks, like human hands, are important for exploring the world. Elephants hardly keep them still-unless sleeping. The researchers thought that a trunk monitor that didn’t move for at least five minutes likely meant its host was asleep.
The monitors tracked the animals over about a month. During that time, the elephants averaged just two hours of sleep a day. What’s more, the elephants were able to skip a night’s sleep without needing extra rest the next day. Those trunk implants showed there were times when the elephants went up to 46 hours without any sleep.
There has been some thought that animals need sleep to store memories properly. But that can’t explain animals, like the elephants, which skip sleep for a night without needing catch-up rest later “Elephants are usually not considered to be forgetful animals,” Manger observes. In fact, he notes, studies have found that they can have long memories.
32. How did the African elephants typically sleep according to the new study
A. They stood up. B. They walked around. C. They grouped. D. They kept eyes open.
33. Why did Manger’s team implant the trunk monitors
A. To test a new tracker. B. To help elephants fall asleep.
C. To train wild animals. D. To study elephants’ sleep.
34. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. People always think elephants are forgetful animals.
B. A good night’s sleep benefits all the wildlife’s brains.
C. Little sleep doesn’t affect the memory of elephants.
D. Scientists can’t understand why sleep makes sense.
35. What is the text mainly about
A. Tips on watching wildlife. B. Wild elephants’ sleep habit.
C. Efforts to protect wild elephants. D. National nature reserves in Africa.

Cory had a quarrel with his mother for his study and left home in the morning. He had been wandering on the streets for almost a whole day, feeling so depressed and hopeless
It was freezing cold at dusk on such a winter day. And the sky was dark. He was walking down an empty street where there were no passers-by, because people must have been at home for warmth. Cory was walking to a crossroad when suddenly he came across a little boy stuck in the middle of the road alone like him.
Cory had meant to turn a blind eye to him at first. But the boy’s situation worried him. He approached the boy, asking, “Hey! Why are you alone here Where is your mother ” “I want to find my mama and papa. Please take me home,” the boy replied, bursting into tears. Cory led him away from the crossroad. Then, he asked worriedly, “How did you come here What’s your name ”
“I’m Simon. I was playing with my dog. The dog ran away, and I ran after him for a long distance. But when I wanted to go back home, I lost my way,” cried the boy. Feeling pity for the boy. Cory made up his mind to help the boy. He couldn’t have the little boy staying here alone.
Attempting to look for his home, Cory took the little boy to different neighborhoods. But things didn’t go that smoothly as he had expected. It was getting darker and darker, and Cory thought he had to help Simon find his home. He knocked on every door, but without luck. Worn out and starving, he realized Simon must be very hungry. He offered him the chocolate he had bought with his rest money. It began to snow and he removed his coat and put it around Simon. Luckily, there was still a bakery store with the door open. He borrowed a phone to call the police station.
