50,000 Relics Rescued from Southern Song Dynasty Ship
Around 50,000 cultural relics have been saved from a shipwreck in the South China Sea, first discovered in 1987.
This ancient ship, now known as Nanhai No.1 (NN1), sailed during the Southern Song Dynasty along the ancient Maritime Silk Road. The ship was 10 metres wide and 22 metres long. British divers found her while searching for another shipwreck.
In 2000, archaeologists mapped the site. In 2007, divers and scientists began rescuing the relics. By 2016, they had completed their studies of the objects found on NN1, amounting to some 50,000 relics of important cultural significance. The ship was also excavated and has now been on display at the Guangdong Maritime Silk Road Museum since 2008.
