Today was Meatloaf Monday. Again, like every Monday. My mom knew how to make seven different meals, one for each day of the week. She kept all seven recipes in a pink folder, each one labeled with a day of the week. And that was our meal plan. I stared at the dull mass my mom placed next to my corn. “ I'm not really hungry,” I said, pushing my food back and forth on my plate. “ Me neither ,’"said the twins. My mom sighed, looking disappointed.
“Malia,” she said, “you’re eleven. You should be setting an example for your brother and sister. Now please, just pick up your forks and eat.” Normally, I would have. But today I was feeling mean. “All of it tastes awful,” I said. My mom’s eyes flashed. But her words remained calm. " Malia," she said. “It’s OK if you don't like my cooking, But it’s not OK to be rude.”
The next day I was siting in our school's kitchen classroom, thinking about what had happened the day before when Mr." Bruin, our teacher, interrupted. “I’ve got exciting news,” he said. Exciting news The class looked expectantly at Mr. Bruin. “ To finish off our unit on kitchen skills, we’re having a competition. And the first-place prize is the newest book in the Cave of the Dragons series," said Mr. Bruin, holding up a copy for everyone to see. The class erupted into cheers.
At break times, all anyone could talk about was the upcoming cooking competition." I’m totally going to win!" " My dad's the best cook ever. I've got talent in my genes!

伏笔:“我” 对妈妈的厨艺不满,称 “All of it tastes awful”。

I thought about my genes, but I still wanted to participate in this competition. Determined to prove myself, I buried myself in cooking books every evening. I practiced cutting vegetables into perfect shapes, tried different seasonings, and experimented with various cooking methods. When the competition day arrived, I was brimming with nervous energy. However, as soon as I started, things went wrong. My hands trembled while cracking eggs, and I accidentally added too much salt. The final dish looked like a mess, and it was no surprise that I didn't win.
第二段
On the way home after failing the competition, I thought of my mum's meatloaf. Suddenly, it dawned on me how much effort she put into making every meal delicious. I remembered her standing in the hot kitchen, sweating while stirring the pot. When I got home, I went straight to the kitchen and hugged her tightly. With tears in my eyes, I said, "Mom, I'm so sorry for being rude. Please teach me how to cook." She smiled warmly, her eyes filled with love, and nodded. From then on, I learned not only cooking skills but also the meaning of love and respect.
第一段
I thought about my genes, but I still wanted to participate in this competition. I asked my neighbors for cooking advice, watched countless cooking videos online, and even tried to recreate some of the fancy dishes I saw. At the competition, the pressure got to me. I burned the sauce and overcooked the meat. The judges' disappointed looks told me everything. I left the competition area with my head down, feeling like a complete failure.
第二段
On the way home after failing the competition, I thought of my mum's meatloaf. I realized that the simple meals she made were full of love. I ran home, and when I saw my mom, I said, "Mom, I was so wrong. Your cooking is the best because it's made with love." She kissed my forehead and said, "It's okay, dear. Let's cook together." We spent the evening in the kitchen, and I learned the secrets of making her delicious meatloaf. This experience taught me the importance of family and the love that binds us.
I thought about my genes , but I still wanted to participate in this competition. After all, cooking was not just about talent; it was also about passion and practice. Determined to prove myself, after returning home, I spent every spare moment reviewing the accurate measuring, food preparation and cooking skills learnt in class again and again. I even asked Mom for tips, which surprisingly brought us closer. Then came the thrilling moment! I, together with several participants, went to the kitchen with anticipation. However, try as I might, mine could never taste as good. I didn’t end up winning the competition.
On the way home after failing the competition, I thought of my mum’s meatloaf. I remembered the look of disappointment on her face when I had rejected it, and my heart sank. Though simple, it was always made with love and care. I had taken her efforts for granted, never realizing the hard work and dedication she put into every meal. Back home, I apologized to Mom for my earlier rudeness and offered to help her prepare dinner. To my surprise, she suggested we try making the meatloaf together. It turned out better than ever, filled with love and newfound respect for each other’s efforts.
I thought about my genes, but I still wanted to participate in this competition. Despite not having a family legacy of great cooking, I was determined to prove myself. I spent every spare moment after school pouring over cookbooks, trying out new recipes, and perfecting my techniques. When the day of the competition arrived, I was nervous yet excited. However, my inexperience showed. I fumbled with the ingredients, and my dish ended up looking unappealing and tasting even worse. I didn't even make it to the final round.
On the way home after failing the competition, I thought of my mum's meatloaf. Suddenly, it didn't seem so dull anymore. I remembered how much effort she put into cooking for us every day, trying to provide balanced meals. Shame washed over me as I recalled my rudeness. When I got home, I found my mom in the kitchen. With a lump in my throat, I apologized sincerely. She smiled gently, forgiving me instantly. Then, I asked her to teach me how to make meatloaf. From that day on, I truly appreciated my mom's cooking and the love she put into every meal.
