My good friend, George, was influenced by his parents, who are some of the best examples of giving, whether they get paid or not.
When I was a little child, I joined George and his mom in going to Erin’s house, bringing food and daily supplies with us. Obviously, Erin’s family faced economic trouble and could hardly afford food. George and I took several bags of things to the door, rang the bell and ran off. Erin still doesn’t know to this day who did that. Since then, I’ve always given whatever I could afford to help the people in need.
You never knew what my act would lead the people in need to do. A few years ago I came across a homeless man begging for money to get bread at a bus stop. I could have ignored him, but I felt sorry for him and pulled out my wallet. I only had $ 20 in my hand. I was just a college student. However, I handed him the money, and he promised me that he’d find a job to make a living. When I got on the bus, he smiled at me and said,“I’ll remember you forever!”I also smiled. It totally made my day, and I would also never forget his face. Later, I lent my phone to one boy to call his family and managed to help his worried mother find a job online.
Though an act of kindness toward anyone can seem like no big deal to me and cost me nearly nothing, I believe in the effects it can have on other people. Hopefully, they still have faith in humanity. It’s the kind of interaction that is more valuable than money. Since doing good is within our power, let’s help out more.
4. What made the author start helping others
A. The request from Erin.
B. The request from George’s parents.
C. His childhood experience of doing good with George.
D. His past experience of giving money to the homeless.

D. To show interaction is as valuable as money.

A. Give to Get Paid B. Try to Make My Day

How much do you love animals Maybe not as much as photographer Joel Sartore. He is traveling the world to take pictures of as many animals as he can find, which allows people to focus on the beauty and uniqueness of each animal.
Sartore is working to take photos of all 20,000 different types of animals living in the world’s zoos, aquariums (水族馆) and wildlife shelters. And he has already taken nearly 15,000! He hopes his photos will remind people of the situation these planet’s most endangered creatures are in, and that he can record them before they’re gone. “My job is to tell their stories and hope that the world cares in time,” he told The Weather Channel in 2023.
Sartore calls his project the Photo Ark, like the story of Noah’s Ark, in which a large boat is built to save every type of animal in the world from a flood. He founded the Photo Ark in 2016 in his hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska.
He doesn’t just take his animal photos in the usual zoo environment, however. He puts each animal on a black or white background with studio lights. This helps him photograph their true colors, and lets people see a little mouse as clearly as a big elephant and look each animal right in the eye. “When people connect to animals through eye contact, we have got a real chance at changing human behavior,” Sartore says.
The project has been well received. Sartore has more than 1.6 million followers online and a best-selling series of Photo Ark books. He asks people to buy his books and photos, give money to the Photo Ark, and support zoos, aquariums and wildlife shelters near where they live.
8. What is the purpose of Sartore’s project
A. To help sell his photos. B. To help save animals in danger.
C. To meet his own interest in animals. D. To offer another way to learn about animals.
9. What can be known about Sartore’s photos of the animals in Paragraph 4
A. They are black and white. B. They are about animals in danger.
C. They are taken in a natural condition. D. They are taken in a designed environment.
10. What is people’s attitude towards Sartore’s project
A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Negative.
11. What would be the best title for the passage
A. The Profile of a Traveling Photographer.
B. The Art of Studio Photography for Animals.
C. Saving Endangered Species: One Photo at a Time.
D. The History of Noah’s Ark and Animal Protection.

Have you ever played a computer game for a long time and then kept seeing the game’s images afterward This happened to me with the classic shape-falling game Tetris (俄罗斯方块), created in 1985 by Alexey Pajitnov.
Feeling stressed one evening, I turned on my switch to find a game to play and relax with. That’s when I discovered Tetris. Before I knew it, I was extremely interested. Even when I stopped, my brain was still playing, with the blocks falling in my mind. I started looking at objects in the real world and thinking about how they could be moved and stacked (堆叠) together. I even dreamed about Tetris. I was experiencing the common “Tetris effect”.
Introduced by journalist Jeffrey Goldsmith in his 1994 Wired magazine article called This Is Your Brain on Tetris, the effect has been observed by psychologists (心理学家) and researchers. The lasting images of Tetris are due to the “Zeigarnik effect”, in which people have better memories of uncompleted tasks than those of completed ones. Tetris, being a game that technically never ends, keeps you thinking of the game’s unfinished task, reported Tech Times. And the pleasant music stays with you, too.
There are also positives to the Tetris Effect. In his 1991 study, psychologist Richard Haier at the University of California found that continuously playing Tetris resulted in the thickness of the cerebral cortex (大脑皮层) increasing, which improves brain function (功能), reported psychology website Practical Pie.
Tetris has also been researched for use as a treatment for mental suffering. The Yale Scientific Magazine reported that researchers at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, UK, found that playing Tetris appeared to reduce unpleasant memories in the short term for people affected by motor vehicle accidents.
So, the next time you want to play a computer game, why not try the classic Tetris and see if it improves your brain function But be warned, you’ll likely be seeing falling blocks everywhere.
12. What happened to the author after playing the game Tetris
A. He was relaxed completely. B. He was addicted to it ever since.
C. He saw some falling blocks everywhere. D. He kept thinking about it even after it was over.
13. What can be learned about the “Tetris Effect” from the text
A. It was introduced by a researcher. B. It was caused by the game’s music.
C. It is related to the way our memory works. D. It is common among computer game players.
14. What benefit can people get from continuously playing Tetris, according to Haier
A. Better brain function. B. Improving happiness.
C. Reducing short memory. D. Comfort from bad experiences.
15. What do you think of the author in the last paragraph
A. Serious. B. Humorous. C. Worried. D. Surprised.

In order to encourage the fresh students to attach great importance to English reading, an English reading competition was organized for Senior One students in our school last Friday afternoon.
40 students selected from the 20 classes took part in it. At 2:00 pm, the students gathered at the school hall. They took turns to read one of the appointed articles within 5 minutes. After they finished reading, five senior teachers marked and commented on their performances. At last, the winners were awarded. The competition ended at 6:30 pm.
The activity benefited us students a lot. Not only did it give us a good chance to improve ourselves but also arouse our interest in reading.
