Significance
Zheng He’s voyages helped develop and strengthen harmonious relations with the countries and regions, exposing foreign people to Chinese culture, and allowing the Chinese to better understand overseas lands.
Columbus’s discovery inspired explorers to explore and discover more vast areas of the world. His voyages opened a new chapter of the Age of Exploration, a period which witnessed many important geographical findings and allowed for an international exchange of ideas and cultures.

Further thinking
1. By comparing the stories of the two explorers, what can you learn about
They both set out to discover the world and this had a profound influence on the world in some way. Their voyages also give us an idea of the challenges and amazing experiences they had, which are quite different from modern voyages. Furthermore, Zheng He’s voyages not only represent China’s splendid history of sailing but also highlight their contribution to navigation.

Further thinking
2. How might explorers have changed the course of history
Our modern world is the result of the discoveries made by explorers. If some of these discoveries were not made, our lives would be vastly different, from the food we eat to the ideas we have, even to the languages we speak. For example, the voyages made by explorers helped establish regular contact between different parts of the world. In doing so, languages have evolved and cultures have spread, creating a more colourful world.

2. What have you learnt about the spirit of exploration from the articles
The spirit of exploration is extraordinarily strong in humans and that it is an important part of our existence. It is human nature to discover new things and because we are generally curious, and we are not afraid of hardship or danger. This kind of spirit encourages us to try new things and push the limits of what is possible. If we did not have the strong spirit of exploration, our species would never progress, and we would never know of the amazing diversity found on the Earth. Similarly, if we are not willing to explore new things or are afraid of taking risks in daily life, we may lose many chances to expand our understanding of the world.

Language appreciation
1. Read the two articles carefully and think about this question:
What writing techniques make good historical articles
Historical articles written in the third person have an objective tone and not a subjective tone. Additionally, the active voice prevents sentences from becoming long, wordy and unclear because its structure is plain and easy to understand. The chronological order helps present historical events as they occurred in time, making it easy for the reader to follow the logical flow of events.
