Consulates(领事馆) exist to help citizens abroad to help themselves. Every year millions of people go abroad for pleasure or profit. There are consular officers ready to do what they can to help if people get into difficulties, but for all sorts of reasons there are limits to what they can do. Most times things go well for travellers abroad but occasionally things go wrong.
So,whether you are an experienced traveller or a first-timer, going by yourself, with the family or a group, there are things you should do before you go. Think about money and tickets well in advance. Take enough money including enough to pay your return fare, and hold on to it. Better still, buy return tickets in the first place. In an emergency a consul will contact your relatives or friends and ask them to help you with money or tickets. But there's no law that says a consul has to lend you money and if he eventually does (and it will have to be repaid) he will want to be satisfied first that you really do have no money and there is no one else you know who can help.
It is also important to take out proper insurance for everything from car breakdowns to loss of life. A consul cannot pay your medical or any other bills, nor can he do the work of local travel representatives or motoring organizations.
1.What does the underlined word “emergency” mean?
A.A lucky chance.
B.A hot discussion.
C.A serious situation.
D.An exciting travel.
2.What is the author trying to do in the text?
A.To inform people about laws abroad.
B.To describe an international problem.
C.To explain how to visit a consulate.
D.To give advice about going abroad.
3.Why would somebody read the text?
A.To know how to contact a consul.
B.To find out how to make a complaint.
C.To know when to contact a consul.
D.To find out where a consul lives.
4.You can borrow money from a consul if you ______.
A.need to stay abroad longer
B.have to help a relative
C.have no other financial means
D.need to have your car repaired
从“...a consul will contact your relatives or friends and ask them to help you with money or tickets”看出当一个人突遇紧急情况的时候,领事才联系你的亲戚或朋友要求他们为你提供钱或票据。

More and more parents are willing to send their children abroad to study. If everything goes well, by helping them to enter into world-famous universities, parents are helping their children not only to have the best of education as they expect but also to understand and appreciate foreign cultures. Before sending your children abroad, there are many factors(因素) worth considering.
Studying abroad is not as expensive as you think. In fact, prices are not the most important factor in choosing schools especially if you have the chance to send your children in a relatively small university but of good quality. You will find that it is a worthy investment(投资) of your money to send your children to study abroad.
Are you ready to see your only child leave for another country? Before the trip it is necessary that you have the correct guidance to prepare your children to have a smooth trip. In addition to studying, your children in foreign land can learn new language and new culture. They will also learn to live on their own and to develop the self-confidence, which is good for the forming of their character.
If you have already decided to send your children abroad, then they need the help to find the most suitable schools and courses. The children are still in growing stages. What is important is that the school should be able to provide not only the proper studying courses but it should also take into account the environment and help students to develop their self-confidence. Most of all, remember that the parents' aim is not to find the best school but help their children find the most suitable school. Your needs are not always what your children need.

You will find that teaching styles in the US are much different from those in other countries. Teaching in the US is more interactive and less dependent on rote memorization. Students regularly interrupt faculty(全体教师) to ask questions or offer constructive criticism of part of the lecture. This is encouraged, since professors prefer discussion and debate to passive silence. You will also notice that the students and faculty tend to dress rather informally. Faculty will have open office hours for students to come by and ask questions.
Class sizes tend to be smaller in the US than in other countries. Although first-year students may have a few large classes, most classes are small, with 15 to 45 students. The large lectures will often have small recitation sections run by teaching assistants or faculty. Recitation sections review the material presented in the main lecture, supplement it with additional material, and provide an opportunity to ask questions.
Your grade in most classes will be based on your scores on tests, quizzes, and assignments. If the class has a recitation or discussion section, active participation can improve your grade. The better the professor and teaching assistants know you and your work, the better they will be able to assess your progress.
Unless the professor has indicated that collaboration (合作) is expected, you should do all of the work on your own. Collaborating with fellow students on individual assignments is considered cheating. Studying with others is OK, but assignments should be completed individually. Likewise, quoting a text word for word without properly attributing the source is plagiarism. Cheating and plagiarism is grounds for failing a class or even expulsion(开除) from school.
1.American teachers would like students to ______ in class.
A.have discussions and debates
B.memorize all the materials
C.remain silent while listening
D.be informally dressed
2.A student can do all of the following EXCEPT ________ in America.
A.interrupting the teachers
B.dressing rather informally
C.coming to the teacher's office anytime
D.criticizing the teacher's lecture
3.The underlined word “plagiarism” in the last paragraph probably refers to the act of ________.
A.quoting something from others' works
B.stealing someone else's words,ideas, etc
C.doing one's assignments with others' help
D.cheating in an exam
4.The last paragraph is mainly about ________.
A.how a student can improve his grade
B.how a student should fulfill his assignments
C.how to collaborate with fellow students
D.how to punish a student cheating

Most students in the UK leave school or sixth-form college at the age of 18 and go to study for three years in a university, but in recent years many students have chosen to take a one-year break between finishing school and starting university.
This period is called a gap year and is a time when British students can broaden their horizons by visiting foreign countries.
Tens of thousands of gap-year travellers leave Britain every year, with Australia as the most popular destination. While some volunteer for charity work in developing countries, others will enjoy eco-tourism or simply backpack through many countries.
Many other gap year travellers try their hand in teaching English to the locals in the countries they visit.
Students who take a gap year often say the experience helps them get a better perspective on the world and broadens their cultural awareness.
An important part of any gap year is learning about the culture and society of other peoples. It can be very important to learn about local norms in order to avoid a culture_clash,_such as when Westerners wear clothes that are seen as unacceptable in more conservative countries.
Developments in communications technology mean it is easier than ever to keep in touch with friends and family at home. Many gap year students maintain a travel blog or upload their snaps to photo-sharing websites so that others can see their adventures.
China is becoming an increasingly popular destination for British students. Gap year programmes in China might include coaching sports in Chinese schools, learning kung fu or even teaching English.
Who knows? Perhaps you'll meet some British gap year travellers in your home town soon. Don't forget to practice your English with them!
5.Which is the first place that the gap-year students may go to?
A.Austria. B.Australia.
C.England. D.China.
6.Most British students spend their gap year by ________.
A.doing charity work in developed countries
B.traveling abroad to broaden their acknowledgement of the world
C.volunteering for eco-tourism
D.teaching English in the countryside
7.The underlined word “culture clash” in Paragraph 6 means ________.
A.difference in culture
B.difference in clothes
C.difference in modern life
D.difference in traveling
8.Which would be the best title for this passage?
A.Traveling in Britain
B.Britain Studying Abroad
C.UK Students Abroad
D.Taking a Gap Year During College
由文章第三段第一句可知“...Australia as the most popular destination”。
答案:B
由第三段第二句的developing country可排除A项,从enjoy eco-tourism可排除C项的volunteering for eco-tourism。
答案:A

First, I'd like to thank you for your reminding, although I don't agree with your view which students should spend more time on their lessons instead of read novels. Indeed, reading novels takes up some of the time that should spent on lessons, but it'll make us know what hard life is. Besides, by reading novels we can gain what we can't learn from our textbook. Of course, reading novels has it's shortcomings. Novels that have wrong ideas will make us to do something wrong. Maybe, in your eyes, the disadvantages of reading novels overweighs the advantages. And in my opinion, reading novels is just as another pair of eyes, which broadens my horizon.
