Period 5 Extended reading(1)
Studying volcanoes is a demanding profession. Hazel Rymer frequently has to struggle through rainforests, climb to the top of mountains, and then climb 200 metres into the crater of active volcanoes. But the volcanologist does her best to make it sound less alarming than it is. “Driving to work is more risky,” she insists. “And the deepest I go into the crater of a volcano is about 300 metres,” she adds, trying to make it all sound as ordinary as taking the dog for a walk.
Hazel has been studying volcanoes for a long time, so it's not surprising that she is used to the danger. Her interest in volcanoes began at school. A teacher gave her a book about Pompeii. “I remember reading about the eruption of Vesuvius and the destruction of the city,” she explains. “The thought of all those people just frozen in time had quite an effect on me and I am still excited by their dangerous beauty today.①”
Nowadays, volcanoes are getting more and more unpredictable. There have been many changes in sea level caused by global warming and melting ice caps.② These have resulted in some dormant volcanoes erupting, so studying them is more dangerous than ever before. Hazel says that although she doesn't take any unnecessary risk, she has had some frightening moments.③ Her worst experience was on the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, when she was slowly surrounded by lava. “I had a choice of walking ten hours to get around the lava flow or just walking across it,” she explains. She chose to pick a path across the cooler rocks in the lava stream. “I guess it was five metres. The flow was 1,000℃, so if you hesitated your boots would begin to melt. It was scary, but it really was a practical decision—there wasn't time to do anything else.”
And what about the future “I haven't been to the volcanoes in Indonesia yet. And I would love to spend some time working in the Antarctic,” she says. “I would also like to know why quiet lava flows erupt from some volcanoes and why other volcanoes go bang.” In other words, Hazel Rymer won't be exchanging her volcanoes for the relative safety of driving to work just yet.

Save the Earth from Declining Biodiversity
Plants and animals depend on each other for survival. Find out why this biodiversity is so important and how you can help.
Skip the selfie(自拍照). Riding elephants, holding monkeys, and taking photos with a little lion might seem fun, but these animals might have been caught from the wild and aren't being properly cared for. Avoid these activities on vacation unless you know the group is trustworthy and not treating animals cruelly. __1__
Stand up for scary animals. Some people are afraid of animals like wolves, sharks, and bats and try to harm them. __2__ Because they keep their habitats healthy. So tell everyone how amazing they are.
Bad plants. __3__ They can destroy native species and shake up the whole ecosystem. You can help. Sign up to help remove invasive plants at a local park or nature centre.
Lights off. Birds can become confused by bright nighttime lights, causing them to crash into windows or fly in circles until they're very tired. __4__ You can also talk to your parents about turning off the lights at their high rise offices.
__5__ Bring binoculars(望远镜) on an outdoor adventure to enjoy wildlife from afar. That way you don't disturb animals, which can change their behaviour. Critters(生物) are better off spending energy looking for food or caring for young—not hiding from you!
A. Look—Don't touch.
B. But these animals are super important.
C. A large number of birds die from these.
D. We should make an effort to protect local species.
E. Ask your parents not to “like” similar photos on social media.

Almost every day, we learn of disasters of one form or another through the media. These include not just major disasters that affect large areas for a long time. A severe storm, an electric power breakdown, or a house fire can bring a personal disaster to an individual. This brochure aims to help you develop your personal preparedness plan.
Ⅰ Stockpiling food and drink ● Drinking is more important than eating. Keep about 14 liters of liquid per person in stock for each week. ● No experiments. Your supplies should mainly consist of food and drink that you normally have. ● Ensure that your supplies can be stored for long periods of time without refrigeration and that most of them can be eaten cold. Ⅱ Emergency pack ● The aim of a disaster supplies kit should be to help you to cope with the possibility of having to exist for a few days outside of your house. Don't take more for each family member than could be conveniently contained within the confines of a rucksack(帆布背包). A rucksack is more practical than a suitcase, as it allows you to have both hands free. ● The emergency rucksack should contain these items: —First aid materials and personal medication —Sleeping bag or blanket —Hygiene products for a couple of days Ⅲ Electric power breakdown ● Keep a supply of torches and candles, as well as spare batteries, matches or lighters in the house. Remember that batteries do not last indefinitely. Regularly use the batteries up and replace them. ● You can prepare smaller meals on a camping stove, one that can be operated through the use of charcoal(木炭) or gas. Ⅳ Keep up to date in an emergency Floods or heavy snowfalls may lead to parts of the population getting cut off from the outside world. Information and warnings are important for survival. Those who are trapped can often only be reached by radio, television or the Internet. However, television and the Internet only work when there is electric power, which could fail. This leaves just the radio as the main warning device. Ⅴ About us The Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance(BBK) was established in 2004 as a central organizational unit for civil security in Germany. The BBK is your reliable partner for emergency preparedness and self help. You can find further information on our website.

The time for action is now, at least when it comes to climate change. If we don't take measures that limit global warming, it may be impossible to stop its progress, according to a study published in 2018.
The study claims that in 2035, we will cross a point of no return—after which it will be extremely unlikely that we can stop Earth's temperature from rising by 2 degrees Celsius(2℃) and kicking off dangerous global disasters.
The 2℃ mark is very important for Earth's well being. Once the planet warms an additional 2℃, scientists predict a range of disastrous effects, from widespread flooding in coastal areas to burning heatwaves and extreme storms.
One important way that could slow the movement toward a point of no return in 2035 is the changing from fossil fuels(矿物燃料) to renewable energy sources. But even this will require significant progress. Scientists have figured that the share of renewables worldwide must grow by at least 2 percent each year in order to slow the process toward climate change. Two percent a year may not sound like much, but in the 20 years leading up to 2017, the percentage of energy from renewables grew by a poor total of 3.6 percent.
There is hope, though. If the use of renewable energy were to go beyond the scientists' model, say by 5 percent per each year, the climate change deadline(最后期限) could move back by at least a decade, the researchers note. Also, developing technology to remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere could help slow climate change. These gases change Earth's atmosphere and allow it to capture more heat from the sun and cause temperatures to rise.
“We hope that ‘having a deadline’ may stimulate the sense of urgency to act for policy makers,” Henk Dijkstra, one of the study authors, said. “Very little time is left.”
( ) 4. What might happen once the Earth warms an additional 2℃?
A. The climate system will be rebuilt.
B. Global warming is uncontrollable.

( ) 5. What does the underlined “this” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A. The advances of scientific research.
B. The shift from fossil fuels to renewables.
C. The process of slowing down climate change.
D. The increase of public environmental awareness.
( ) 6. What is Paragraph 5 mainly about
A. The limitation of scientists' model.
B. Possible solutions to slowing climate change.
C. The value of the “point of no return” concept.
D. Serious effects of greenhouse gases on Earth.
( ) 7. Why do the researchers set a deadline
A. To stress the need of global cooperation.
B. To call on people to use renewable energy.

Fountains of lava erupted from the Sundhnúkur volcanic system in southwest Iceland on January 14th, 2024. Lava flows welled up from a new gap, attacking the suburbs of Grindavík with at least three houses in their path burnt down. Nearby, construction vehicles that had been working for weeks to build large earthen dams in an attempt to divert(使转向) the lava's flow had to pull back.
Lava is subject to gravity like other fluids, so it will flow down along a path of the steepest descent(斜坡). With the temperature of its molten rock often well above 1,000 degrees Celsius, not much can stand in its way. Humans have tried many ways to stop lava in the past, from attempting to freeze it in place by cooling it with sea water to using explosives to cut off its supply. However, no attempt was successful.
Most recent efforts have focused instead on building dams in an attempt to divert the lava's flow toward a different path of the steepest descent, into a different “lavashed”, where lava would naturally flow. Results have been mixed, but diversion can be successful if the lava flow can be clearly diverted into a distinct area where lava would naturally flow—without threatening a different community in the process. Many attempts to divert lava have failed, however. Barriers built in Italy to stop Mt. Etna's lava flows in 1992 slowed the flow, but the lava eventually overtopped each one.
Diverting lava in Grindavík is difficult, in part because the land around Grindavík is relatively flat, making it harder to identify a clear alternative path of the steepest descent for redirecting the lava. Icelandic officials reported on January 15th that most of the lava from the main gap had flowed along the outside of the barrier, however a new gap had also opened inside the perimeter(外围), sending lava into a neighborhood. Unfortunately, that implies that Grindavík remains at risk.
( ) 1. What do we know about the lava erupting from the Sundhnúkur volcanic system
A. It severely affected the downtown area of Grindavík.

Rivers and streams in Alaska are changing colors—from a clean, clear blue to a rusty orange—because of the toxic metals released by thawing permafrost(融化的冻土), according to a new study.
The finding surprised researchers who conducted tests at 75 locations in the waterways of Alaska's Brooks Range. The rivers and streams in the range appeared to rust and became cloudy and orange over the past 5 to 10 years, according to the study published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment.
The discoloration(变色) and cloudiness are being caused by metals such as iron and lead, some of which are toxic to the river and stream ecosystems—as permafrost thaws and exposes the waterways to minerals locked away underground for thousands of years.
“We're used to seeing this in parts of California where we have mining history. This is a classic process that happens in rivers here for over 100 years,” said Brett Poulin, a co author of the study and a professor of environmental toxicology at UC Davis. “But it's very shocking to see it in some of the most remote wilderness and far from a mine source,” Brett added.
Arctic soils naturally contain organic carbon, nutrients and metals within their permafrost. High temperatures have caused these minerals and the water sources around them to meet as permafrost melts. The Arctic is warming four times faster than the rest of the world. “It's really an unexpected consequence of climate change,” said Brett.
This discoloration has been linked to dramatic declines in sea life, raising concerns about how the continued melting of permafrost will affect communities that rely on those waterways for drinking and fishing.
These studies have extended beyond the US in the past. Similar research on increases in metal and rare earth element concentrations in mountain rivers and streams has been done in the European Alps and the Pyrenees in northern Spain. Although some of these areas have been exposed to mining sites and thus have seen metal concentrations in rivers and streams over the years, the noted increases raise questions about how climate change will continue to impact mountain water sources.
( ) 5. What leads to color changes in the waterways in Alaska
A. Fast circulation of water. B. A long history of mining.
C. Exposure of certain minerals. D. Imbalanced water ecosystems.
( ) 6. What do Brett's words indicate about the unusual discoloration
A. It's a natural process in Alaska. B. It often happens in the wilderness.
C. It existed in California not long ago. D. It's linked to the rise in temperature.
( ) 7. Which can be a possible result of the phenomenon
A. Fishermen will catch fewer fish.
B. The Arctic will be warmer and warmer.
C. Metal concentrations in water will drop quickly.
D. Most European mining sites will be closed down.
( ) 8. What can be the best title for the article
A. Melting Permafrost in the Arctic

By the time引导时间状语从句,表示“到……的时候为止”,主句则表示在此时间之前某个事件已完成。当从句用过去时时,主句通常用过去完成时。句子主语承受destroy的动作,因此主句的谓语动词应使用过去完成时的被动语态。
5. 考查非谓语动词。sb be said to have done意为“据说某人已经做过某事”,其中to have done是动词不定式的完成式,表示动词不定式的动作发生在谓语动词之前。
Period 6 Extended reading(2) & Project

A
These four people from around the world prove that, together, we can reshape the future of our planet.
Diane Wilson
In December 2019, Diane Wilson won a landmark case against Formosa Plastics, one of the world's largest plastic companies, for getting rid of poisonous plastic waste illegally dumped on Texas' Gulf Coast. The $50 million settlement is the largest award in a citizen suit against an industrial polluter in the history of the US Clean Water Act. As a part of the settlement, Formosa Plastics agreed to stop throwing away plastic waste and fund remediation(补救) of affected local wetlands, beaches, and waterways.
Delima Silalahi
Delima Silalahi led a campaign to secure legal control of 17,824 acres of tropical(热带的) forest land for six indigenous communities in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Her community's activism reclaimed this territory from a pulp(纸浆) and paper company. The six communities have begun restoring the forests, creating valuable carbon sinks of biodiverse Indonesian tropical forest.
Tero Mustonen
Since April 2018, Tero Mustonen has led the restoration of 62 severely destroyed former industrial peat(泥炭) mining and forestry sites throughout Finland—totaling 86,000 acres—and transformed them into productive, biodiverse wetlands and habitats. Rich in organic matter, peatlands are highly effective carbon sinks. Roughly one third of Finland's surface area is made up of peatlands.
Alessandra Korap Munduruku
Alessandra Korap Munduruku organised community efforts to stop mining development by British mining company Anglo American in Brazil's Amazon rainforest. In May 2021, the company formally committed itself to withdrawing 27 approved research applications to mine inside indigenous territories, including the Sawré Muybu Indigenous Territory, which contains more than 400,000 acres of rainforest. The decision protects a critically threatened area of the Amazon from further mining and deforestation.

Last month, a part of the Negro River in the Amazon rainforest reduced to a depth of just 12.7 metres, its lowest level in 120 years, due to the lack of rainfall. In Lake Tefé, about 500 kilometres away, more than 150 river dolphins were found dead, not because of the low water levels, but probably because the lake had reached temperatures close to 40℃.
“The Amazon rainforest in northern Brazil is experiencing a tough time and it is the sum of three things,” says Luciana Gatti, a researcher at Brazil's National Institute. “The first is deforestation, which is turning rainforest into a drier, hotter place,” she says.
“Additionally, El Ni o climate pattern has begun and it makes things worse,” adds Gatti. El Ni o is a phenomenon which occurs every two to seven years. During El Ni o, winds that usually blow from east to west along the equator(赤道) are weakened or even turn the other way round. This leads to the change of rainfall in South America, causing dry air in the north, where the rainforest lies, and damp air in the south. As a result, countries in the south are currently greeted by heavy rains, while the Amazon rainforest is experiencing the lowest rainfall levels from July to September in 40 years.
The third factor is the unusual warming of the water in the northern Atlantic Ocean. The warming of these waters causes the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone(热带辐合带), a region of intense cloud and rain formation, to shift north. The ITCZ takes the storms with it, away from Brazil, and causes less rainfall than usual.
Although it is hard to predict when the next drought might strike the Amazon rainforest, studies show that climate change is messing with the timing of El Ni o. “The tendency is that we have stronger and more frequent crises,” Gatti says. “This could be a disaster for the Amazon rainforest, already hit by deforestation and a warming, drying climate.” The forest's tipping point is coming closer—and it's coming quick.
( ) 4. What phenomenon does the author describe at the beginning of the text
A. The climate change and flood.
B. The extreme drought and heat.
C. The severe pollution and extinction.
D. The wildlife death and deforestation.
( ) 5. According to Gatti, why does El Ni o make things worse
A. The east wind brings hot air.
B. The west wind causes heavy rain.
C. The high temperature has decreased damp air.
D. The wind direction has affected the rainfall pattern.
( ) 6. What can be inferred about the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone from Paragraph 4
A. It produces rainfall in Brazil.
B. It carries clouds to rainforest.
C. Its movement worsens the drought in the Amazon rainforest.
D. Its formation raises the water temperature.
( ) 7. What is Gatti's attitude to the future of the Amazon rainforest
A. Concerned. B. Unclear. C. Positive. D. Objective.

Period 1 Welcome to the unit & Reading(1)
Rescue workers and thousands of volunteers are not the only ones who have won hearts and minds for their heroic efforts in the search for survivors after Tuesday's powerful earthquake in Mexico.① Fifteen dogs from the navy's canine(军犬) unit have assisted this week in the rescue efforts at the sites of collapsed buildings across Mexico City, where more than 50 people have been pulled alive from the ruins.
Of the canine heroes none is more famous or loved than Frida, a six year old white Labrador who in her distinguished service has won praise for her ability to detect people who have been trapped by various natural disasters. Over her admirable career she has found 52 people including 12 survivors in Mexico and other Latin American countries.
This week, Frida and Evil and Echo—two Belgian Shepherds that have also been specially trained for rescue efforts—were sent to the site of the collapsed Enrique Rebsamen School in southern Mexico City.
Equipped with goggles that protect her eyes from dust and smoke, boots to prevent damage to her paws while she climbs over rough ruins, Frida took to her work looking every part of the ruins.②
If Frida detects the presence of a survivor, she is trained to bark to alert rescue workers but if she detects a corpse she stops suddenly before proceeding, her handler explained.
Eleven children were rescued from ruins at the school but this time human rescue workers rather than the dogs were the ones who located them.③
However, that hasn't stopped Frida from becoming a social media star and reaching a new level of fame this week. Videos and other social media posts that highlight the work of Frida and her impressive record of detecting people trapped by natural disasters spread quickly online.
While she has yet to detect anyone trapped in the ruins this week, she and other rescue dogs are continuing to work tirelessly, searching through spaces that humans cannot reach.④ With the possibility that there are still people trapped alive, time will tell whether she adds to her rescue record.

Unlike other natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes are very hard to see coming, even for scientists. __1__ Thus, specific practices for earthquake preparedness are necessary. Here are four steps you can take to prepare yourself in advance.
Drop, cover and hold
If you feel the ground start to shake, drop, take cover under a stable piece of furniture, and hold on. You can hide under something like a desk or table, with one arm holding on to a leg of the table and your other arm protecting your neck and head. __2__ In modern homes, it is no stronger than any other part of the house and will not protect you from injury.
Make a family plan
__3__ Create a meeting point—somewhere easy for everyone to remember, or you could also meet at home. Whatever plan you decide on, don't rely on your phone as your main form of communication. Technology fails all the time in disasters. A major earthquake in California, for example, damaged cell towers and knocked out communication services for days.
Secure your furniture
Those hanging shelves above your bed could be a danger during an earthquake. People often get injured from “flying or falling objects” like furniture or glass during earthquakes. So examine your home and ask yourself, “What could be a potential danger to my safety?” __4__
Make digital copies of important documents
Important documents may get destroyed during earthquakes. Therefore, scan or take photos of your important documents, such as your license, financial records and insurance policy information. __5__ This step can help ensure your documents will be available even if your computer is lost in a quake.
A. Then send them to your email.
B. These are all important personal documents.
C. Make sure your household has a plan of action.
D. Whatever you do, do not stand in a door frame.
E. If you find the answer, you need to run away immediately.
F. Nowadays early detection systems can only give seconds of warming ahead.
G. If possible, remove those heavy and big objects above your bed immediately.

Unit 2 Natural disasters
Period 1 Welcome to the unit & Reading(1)
尤其根据“With the possibility that there are still people trapped alive, time will tell whether she adds to her rescue record.”
主体部分“Rescue workers and thousands of volunteers are not the only ones”是主系表结构;“who have won hearts … in Mexico”构成定语从句,修饰前面的the only ones,其中for their … in Mexico连续用介词短语构成状语,分别表示原因、时间和地点。
Equipped with goggles是非谓语动词,“that protect her eyes from dust and smoke”是定语从句修饰goggles, boots与goggles并列,同做Equipped with的宾语,to prevent damage to her paws为不定式做后置定语,while引导时间状语从句。主体部分“Frida took to her work”是主谓宾结构,looking every part of the ruins是现在分词短语修饰work。
“While she has yet to detect anyone trapped in the ruins this week”是让步状语从句;主体部分“she and other rescue dogs are continuing to work tirelessly”是主谓宾结构;searching through … cannot reach是现在分词短语做伴随状语,其中that humans cannot reach是定语从句修饰spaces。

Atmospheric rivers are long, narrow bands of moisture in the atmosphere. These rivers in the sky can transport 15 times the volume of the Mississippi River. When that moisture reaches the coast and moves inland, it rises over mountains, bringing rain and snow. Many fire weary people welcome the water, but atmospheric rivers can cause other disasters, such as extreme flooding and debris flows.
On Feb. 27, 2019, an atmospheric river occurred. Just north of San Francisco Bay, in Sonoma County's famed wine country, the storm brought over 21 inches of rain. For the fifth time in four decades, the town of Guerneville was flooded. Damages in the town alone were estimated at more than $100 million.
Events like these have drawn attention in recent years, but atmospheric rivers are not new. They have run through the sky for millions of years. And researchers have known for some time that flooding due to atmospheric rivers could cost a lot of money, but until our study no one had quantified these damages.
We found that atmospheric rivers caused an average of $1.1 billion in flood damages yearly in the western U.S. More than 80 percent of all flooding damages in the West in the years we studied were associated with atmospheric rivers. In some areas, such as coastal northern California, these systems caused more than 99 percent of damages.
And several published studies have modeled how atmospheric rivers will change in the coming decades. The process is simple: Greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere, warming the planet. This causes more water to evaporate from oceans and lakes, and increased moisture in the air makes storm systems grow stronger. Like hurricanes, atmospheric rivers are projected to grow longer, wider and wetter in a warming climate.
Therefore, I believe that improving atmospheric forecasting systems should be a priority for adapting to a changing climate. Better understanding of atmospheric rivers can provide valuable information to residents and emergency responders. It is also important to discourage new construction in high risk areas and help people move to safer locations after major disasters, rather than rebuilding in place. Finally, our study underlines the need to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions, with which these storms will keep coming and getting stronger.

In the spring, the western tanagers(唐纳雀) prepared to migrate(迁徙) thousands of miles to the forests of the Mountain West, flying through grasslands, deserts, and occasionally, suburban yards.
To fuel themselves on their lengthy journey, western tanagers feed on insects and berries. They must take advantage of the early season boom in insects that started with springtime plant growth to produce healthy young. But as global climate change caused spring to start earlier, birds such as western tanagers were arriving at their destination after what was known as “green up”, when flowers began blooming and insects popped up. With the shift of the time when plants put out new leaves, western tanagers became more likely to reach their destinations when food is in shortage or after insect numbers have begun to drop.
Scott Loss, a professor at Oklahoma State University, and his colleagues used satellite imagery to calculate the average start of spring green up along the typical migration routes of 150 North American bird species, and then compared that timing with the current green up. They found that spring was indeed beginning earlier along birds' migration routes. The trend continued this year.
They continued to build this picture of the inability of birds to track the changing seasons caused by climate change. Timing mismatches between birds and their food could affect whether birds survived the migration and how many chicks they had.
Morgan Tingley, a researcher at UCLA, said that the migration research could indicate conservation efforts in the future. “Part of it suggested which species were vulnerable(易受伤害的) to various threats,” Tingley said. “This added to the knowledge about vulnerability of a wide range of bird species.” And he hoped that the information would serve to highlight the urgent need to lower greenhouse gas emissions as fast as possible: “It was really important, if we couldn't address climate change immediately, to try to stop habitat loss as much as we can.”
( ) 4. During the migration, what will happen to the western tanagers after “green up”?
A. They will struggle to find enough insects and berries.
B. They will have difficulty finding suitable nesting sites.
C. They will hardly find blooming flowers for reproduction.
D. They will find it hard to survive harsher weather conditions.
( ) 5. What is the direct result of the timing mismatch between birds and their food
A. The loss of birds' habitats.
B. The decrease of birds' survival rate.
C. The contribution to the greenhouse effect.
D. The increase of difficulty in biodiversity conservation.
( ) 6. What is Morgan Tingley's attitude towards the research findings in the last paragraph
A. Uncertain. B. Critical.
C. Concerned. D. Indifferent.

What to Do During a Flood Warning
Floods are among the most frequent and costly natural disasters in terms of human hardship and economic loss. When a flood or flash flood warning is issued, you ought to:
__1__ A warning means a flood is approaching or is happening in the area.
Follow the instructions and advice of local authorities. __2__
If you live in a flood prone area or think you are at risk, evacuate(撤离) immediately. Move to a safe area early before access is cut off by floodwater. __3__Your safety is more important than any other thing. And evacuation is much simpler without carrying too many belongings.
If outdoors, move away from dangerous floodwaters. If you come upon a flowing stream, stop, turn around and go another way. Never try to walk or swim through such swift water. Most flood deaths are caused by people attempting to pass through water, or people playing in water. __4__
When driving, do not attempt to cross flowing streams. The roadbed may be washed out under the water, and you could be trapped. __5__ Look out for flooding at highway dips, bridges, and low areas. Two feet of water will carry away most automobiles.
A. Warn residents against flooding.
B. Look out for the alarms of flooding.
C. They are the most informed about affected areas.
D. Save yourself, not your property, when moving.
E. Evacuation is much safer before floodwater becomes deeper.
F. Rapidly the engine may break down, and the vehicle may be swept away.
G. If it is moving swiftly, even water six inches deep can sweep you off your feet.

There was a time in my life twenty years ago when I was driving a taxi to earn a living. I encountered people whose lives amazed me, made me laugh or made me weep. But none of those lives touched me more than that of a woman I picked up late on a warm August night.
That night, I was called at 2:00 a.m. to pick someone up. When I arrived, the building was completely dark except for one light in a window. In this case, many other drivers would just honk(按喇叭) once or twice, wait a short minute, and then drive away.
But I always went to the door to find the passenger. It might, I reasoned, be someone who needed my assistance. I walked to the door and knocked. “Just a minute,” answered a weak and elderly voice. After a long wait, the door opened. A small woman in her 80s stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.
“Would you carry my bag out to the car?” she said. I took her suitcase and gave her my arm. We walked slowly to the street. She kept thanking me for my kindness.
“It's nothing,” I told her. “I try to treat my passengers how I want my mother treated.”
“You're such a good boy,” she said. When we got in the taxi, she gave me an address. Then she asked, “Could you drive through the downtown?”
“It's not the shortest way,” I answered.
“I don't mind,” she said. “I'm in no hurry. I'm on my way to a hospice(临终安养院).” I saw her eyes shining with tears.
“I don't have any family left,” she continued. “The doctor says I should go there. He says I don't have very long.”
I quietly turned off the meter(计程器). “What road do you want me to take?” I asked.

For_the_next_two_hours,_we_drove_through_the_city. She showed me the building where she had once worked. We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived. Sometimes she'd ask me to slow in front of a particular building and stare into the darkness, saying nothing. When morning broke, we arrived at the address. She asked, “How much should I pay you?” “Nothing,” I said. She thanked me and said, “You give an old woman a little moment of joy.” Then behind me, a door was shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life.
I_did_not_pick_up_any_more_passengers_that_day,_driving_aimlessly,_lost_in_thought. We're conditioned to think that our lives center on great moments. But great moments catch us unawares. I do not think that I have ever done anything in my life that was any more important.
