Social media platforms are filled with individuals proudly sharing their rapid mastering of a language. Where does the secret lie The truth lies in our addiction to instant satisfaction promised by some language apps.
However, besides these apps, here are some ways to help you learn a new language.
Be a child, watching cartoons
One of the most common advice for language learners is to watch children's cartoons, which can be found on YOUKU. These cartoons are often made up of basic phrases and words that one would learn at beginner's level.

If watching cartoons is not your cup of tea, fear not, for there is the alternative of listening to podcasts(播客) and songs. Not only can you pick up phrases and idioms, but you can also develop your appreciation for the culture.
Let the words flow
Talking to waitstaff at native restaurants can help with your language skills. To avoid the risk of making mistakes in public you can start by speaking to your pets. Tell them about your day. As you grow more confident, work up to a native speaker.
A foreign stamp
A commonly overlooked method is to keep a pen pal. Through the exchange of letters, you not only get to practise your writing skills but can also get a friend.

B[2024南京金陵中学期末]
At my first lesson in Chinese calligraphy, my teacher told me plainly: “Now I will teach you how to write your name, and to make it beautiful.” I felt my breath catch. I was curious.
Growing up in Singapore, I had an unusual relationship with my Chinese name. My parents are ethnically Chinese, so they asked fortune tellers to decide my name, aiming for maximum luck. As a result, I ended up with a nonsense and embarrassing name: Chen Yiwen, meaning, roughly, “old”, “barley(薏米)” and “warm”.
When I arrived in America for college at 18, I put on an American accent and abandoned my Chinese name. When I moved to Hong Kong in 2021, after 14 years in the States, I decided to learn calligraphy. “Why not get back in touch with my heritage?” I thought.
In calligraphy, the idea is to copy the old masters' techniques, thereby refining your own. Every week, though, my teacher would give uncomfortably on the nose assessments of my person. “You need to be braver,” he once observed. “Have confidence. Try to produce a bold stroke(笔画).” For years, I had prided myself on presenting an image of confidence, but my writing betrayed me.
I was trying to make sense of this practice. You must visualize the word as it is to be written and leave a trace of yourself in it. As a bodily practice, calligraphy could go beyond its own cultural restrictions. Could it help me go beyond mine My teacher once said to me, “When you look at the word, you see the body. Though a word on the page is two dimensional, it contains multitudes, conveying the force you've applied, the energy of your grip, and the arch of your spine.” I had been learning calligraphy to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself. Now I have sensed that the pleasure out of calligraphy allows me to know myself more fully.
During a recent lesson, my teacher pointed at the word I had just finished, telling me: “This word is much better. I can see the choices you made, your calculations, and your flow. Trust yourself. This word is yours.” He might as well have said, “This word is you.”
( ) 4. What did the author initially think of her name “Chen Yiwen”?
A. It was lucky so she gladly accepted it.
B. She felt proud of its symbolic meaning.
C. She understood the intention but still disliked it.
D. Its strange pronunciation made her embarrassed.
( ) 5. The author decided to learn calligraphy to ______.
A. pick up a new hobby B. reconnect with her origin
C. gain insights into a new culture D. fit in with local community
( ) 6. From the teacher's words, the author learns that calligraphy ______.
A. reflects the creator's spirits B. comes from creative energy
C. highlights the design of strokes D. depends on continuous practice
( ) 7. What does the author intend to tell us
A. Appreciate what our culture offers. B. Find beauty from your inner self.
C. A great teacher leads you to truth. D. We are the sum of what we create.

There are two types of skills that managers look for in the interviews with job seekers: soft skills and hard skills. __1__ Soft skills, unlike hard skills, are usually inborn or gained through personal development. They cover key personality based aspects of what makes someone a good fit for a given role. Some examples of soft skills include: dependability, positive attitude, listening skills, emotional intelligence and so on. Soft skills are extremely important for job seekers to be considered right for the position. __2__
Soft skills are harder to teach. Personality features like listening skills and decision making skills are not transferable skills in the same way that many technical abilities are. Employers value someone with strong communication skills and other soft skills because those skills are much harder to teach.
Soft skills make hard skills easier to learn. __3__ Specific skills like good verbal communication and dependability will make you ready to train hard skills, and thus grow quickly within a job.
__4__ If you are looking for a new job but don't have much experience, showing your strong soft skills can ease doubt employers might have about you. A recent survey revealed that 89% of interviewers would choose an interviewee with excellent soft skills over one with experience.
Employers see soft skills beneficial to a job seeker's future growth and career success. __5__
A. Hard skills matter in the interview.
B. Soft skills can help enrich experience.
C. Here are reasons why soft skills are important.
D. So, show them your soft skills in the interview.

Ellie Hamby, a documentary photographer, and Sandy Hazelip, a physician and lecturer, toured the world in 80 days, adventuring from the beaches of Bali to the deserts of Egypt.
The aged grandmothers started their ambitious adventure on January 11, according to the blog the two have used to document their travels. Their first stop was a location that escapes even many seasoned travelers: Antarctica. Getting to the southernmost continent first required crossing the Drake Passage, the known rough waters between the southern tip of South America and Antarctica's South Shetland Islands. “For almost two days, we were rocking and rolling and slipping and sliding through the Drake Passage and we were holding on for dear life,” Hamby said in an interview with CNN. “It was just wild. But when we stepped foot on the ground on the Antarctic, you forgot all of that,” she recalled. “The beauty of the Antarctic is just unbelievable to see the penguins and the icebergs and the glaciers—just, this was amazing.”
Since that first adventure, the pair have visited 18 countries across all seven continents, often dressed in matching T shirts. They've also accumulated(积累) a loving social media following who track the “traveling grannies” on TikTok, Instagram, and Meta.
Hazelip told CNN that she met Hamby after her husband died in 1999. The two bonded over their shared interest in travel and commitment to prioritizing unique experiences over comfort while abroad. Both became closer after Hamby's husband died in 2005.
Hazelip says the idea for their trip originated a few years before they were each set to turn 80.
“I just got the idea because we had traveled previously together internationally,” she said. “And so about four years before we were going to turn 80, I mentioned to her one day, ‘Ellie, wouldn't it be fun to go around the world in 80 days at age 80?’”

According to a 2018 study from San Francisco State University, nearly 2.4 billion people around the world used a smartphone in 2017. By the end of 2018, more than a third of the global population will be using a smartphone.
However,_smartphone_technology_can_be_a_double edged_sword. On the one hand, it sends us unlimited amounts of information. On the other hand, using a smartphone may become an addiction.
Erik Peper and Richard Harvey are both health education professors at San Francisco State University. They led the study. Peper explains that smartphone addiction forms connections in the brain that are similar to drug addiction. And these connections form slowly over time.
Also, addiction to social media may affect our emotional state. The two professors asked 135 university students about their smartphone use and their feelings. They found that students who used their phones the most reported higher levels of feeling lonely, depressed and anxious.①
Peper and Harvey do not blame users for their technology addiction. They believe it is the tech industry's desire to make more money that is to blame for the technology addiction.② The researchers warn that workers in the technology industry know how to control our brains and turn us into addicts.
But the researchers say that we can limit our brains to be less addicted to our phones and computers. Erik Peper suggests turning off our phones before we sleep or do something important.
The researchers also suggest taking control of when and where you answer texts or emails. You do not need to answer them all. And you certainly don't need to answer them as soon as you get them. They also suggest putting limits on the time you spend on social media. If you want to catch up with friends on Meta, set aside a small amount of time to it.③ You should focus on important tasks and do not allow technology to disturb you.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Frank had just adapted to his new life in China. Among the many exciting experiences, he struck up a close friendship with Li Ming, a local student.
One Saturday, Li Ming invited Frank to try traditional Chinese food, steamed dumplings, for lunch. Eager to experience the local culture, Frank delightedly accepted the invitation. The moment Frank arrived, Li Ming, along with his mother Mrs Zhou, greeted him warmly at the door. Inside the house, a cute cat was playing, adding a touch of liveliness to the already joyous occasion.
Then they gathered in the kitchen to make steamed dumplings together. Li Ming prepared the filling, while Mrs Zhou taught Frank how to make dumpling wrappers. Mrs Zhou gently instructed Frank, “The dough should not be too wet or sticky, and rolling the dumpling wrappers requires the most care to ensure the same thickness.” Everything going smoothly, the steamed dumplings were ready.
Suddenly, an unexpected incident occurred when Frank offered to set the table in the dining room. As Frank put a plate on the table, his hand slipped. With a loud crash, the plate fell onto the floor, scattering dipping sauce everywhere. In panic, Frank stood rooted to the spot with his mind completely blank. Mrs Zhou rushed out of the kitchen. With Mrs Zhou's caring eyes fixed on him, Frank was too ashamed to tell the truth. Seeing the cat nearby, Frank stammered, “It was the cat.” Mrs Zhou smiled gently, “It happens. The cat is always energetic and naughty.” Li Ming laughed, “Never mind.” Mrs Zhou quickly cleaned up the mess with her son.
The steamed dumplings were delicious. Li Ming and his mother were trying their best to make Frank feel at home. However, it was hard for Frank to really enjoy the food, because he lied to his good friend's mother and his friend! Finally, Frank said goodbye to the friendly family and left with his secret.

A new survey finds that more than eighty per cent of Internet users in the United States search for health information online.① The survey found that searching online is one of the leading ways that people look for a second opinion though doctors are still the main source of health information.②
Forty four per cent of people are actually looking for doctors or other providers when they search for health information online. Another finding of the survey: Two thirds of Internet users look online for information about a specific disease or medical condition.
The Internet has also become an important source of emotional support for people with health problems. Susannah Fox says one in five Internet users has gone online to find other people who have the same condition. It was more popular among people with more serious health issues—one in four people living with chronic diseases(慢性病). And it was basically off_the_charts with people living with rare disease. They are so eager to find other people online who share their health concerns.
A disease is considered rare if it affects fewer than two hundred thousand people worldwide. The rise of social networking has made it easier for people with rare diseases to connect with each other and feel less alone. Social networking is also changing the way some doctors and patients communicate with each other.③ Dr Jeff Livingston operates a medical centre for women in Irving, Texas. His office uses password protected software to share information with patients.
“We provide the patient with full access to their medical care. Anything I can see, the patient can see. All of their notes, all of their doctor visits are right there. All of their lab work is right there.” Dr Livingston says the software has increased efficiency, reduced costs and improved relations with patients.

A new study finds that bird species with extreme or uncommon combinations of traits(特征) face the highest risk of extinction. The study led by researchers at Imperial College London finds that the most unique birds on the planet are also the most threatened. Losing these species and the unique roles they play in the environment, such as seed spread, pollination and predation, could have negative impacts on the function of ecosystems.
The study analyzed the extinction risk and physical traits, such as beak shape and wing length, of 99% of all living bird species, making it the most general study of its kind to date. The researchers found that in simulated scenarios(模拟场景) in which all threatened and near threatened bird species became extinct, there would be a significantly greater reduction in the physical diversity among birds than in scenarios where extinction was random(随机的).
Jarome Ali, a PhD candidate at Princeton University who completed the research at Imperial College London, said, “Our study shows that extinction will most likely prune a large percentage of unique species from the bird family tree. Losing these unique species will mean a loss of the specialized roles that they play in ecosystems. If we do not take action to protect threatened species and prevent extinction, the function of ecosystems will be thrown into disorder.”
In the study, the authors used a data set of measurements collected from living birds and museum specimens, totalling 9,943 bird species. Although the data set used in the study was able to show that the most unique birds were also classified as threatened on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, it was unable to show what links uniqueness in birds to extinction risk.
Jarome Ali said, “One possibility is that highly specialized organisms are less able to adapt to a changing environment, in which case human impacts may directly threaten species with the most unusual ecological roles. More research is needed to dive deeper into the connection between unique traits and extinction risk.”
( ) 4. According to researchers, what may the loss of unique birds lead to
A. The reduction of certain research.
B. The damage to ecosystem function.
C. The development of ecological tourism.
D. The better living environment of human race.
( ) 5. What may the underlined word “prune” mean in Paragraph 3

Ernest Owusu was 13 in 1980 when he was given the opportunity to appear in the audience of a BBC show and ask Thatcher how she felt about being called the Iron Lady. This encounter re emerged in a BBC's programme recently.
At the time of their meeting, Owusu was on free school meals, living on a public estate in Brixton, south London, where he and his sister were being raised by their mother Rose, a struggling hairdresser.

Speaking in its clubhouse, Owusu describes his rise in social status(地位) as a “Thatcherite Journey”. And he says it began by asking the woman herself. “To this day it still has an impact. My confidence changed from that sliding door_moment. Something about her connected with me.”
Thatcher told Owusu she enjoyed being called the Iron Lady. “I think it's rather a praise, don't you?” she said. “Because so often people have said to me if you're in your job you've got to be soft and warm and human, but you've got to have a touch of steel.” Owusu recalls the moment, “I just remember her eye contact. She was answering me, not the camera. She welcomed the question saying you've got to be firm in this world. And that stuck with me.”
After the show was broadcast, Owusu said he became “a little hero in Brixton for a good three months”. Owusu added, “It all gave me extra confidence. Doors might not have opened so quickly. It was one of those key moments to make you do things maybe you wouldn't otherwise have done.”
