Gabby Douglas was just 16 when she caught the world's attention at the 2012 Olympics where she won gold in the all around event. From her early days on the gym floor to her life after finding Olympic fame, the transformation of Gabby Douglas has been quite the stunning one indeed.
Gabby Douglas' talent for gymnastics was apparent from a young age. At the tender age of three, the younger Douglas was turning cartwheels. Just two years after beginning her formal gymnastics training, Douglas won Virginia's state gymnastics championship. She racked up more wins over the years, and it was soon evident that she wasn't just a talented gymnast, but a possible Olympic competitor.
At the age of 14, Gabby Douglas knew that for her to make it to the Olympics, she needed a change. She'd already been homeschooled for years to focus on her training, and she set her sights on training with Liang Chow, a coach who has worked with Shawn Johnson. But Chow's gym was in West Des Moines, Iowa—not exactly within commuting distance of her home in Virginia. Moving halfway across the country was not easy for young Gabby Douglas. She felt seriously out of place as one of few black people there.
Douglas also felt much anxiety about chasing her Olympic dream. It would be years before Douglas opened up about the fears she faced on her road to the Olympics. She once said, “When I started this journey, I never knew what it took to get to the Olympics. I had a lot of self doubt … You have to believe that you're good enough and not give up.”
Douglas eventually found the determination to stick with her dream, no matter how tough the journey. Not only did she help her team win gold, but she also won gold in the all around—making her the first black woman to do so. She said, “It was just insane knowing that I had spent my whole life dreaming about this one specific goal and achieved it.”
( ) 4. What made Douglas decide to have a change at 14
A. Her Olympic dream.
B. Her talent for gymnastics.
C. Her desire to train with Liang Chow.
D. Her tiredness of being homeschooled.
( ) 5. Why was Douglas anxious when chasing her dream
A. She thought she was not talented enough.
B. She had to compete with Shawn Johnson.
C. She was unable to adapt to the training in Iowa.
D. She was uncertain about how to get to the Olympics.
( ) 6. What words can be used to best describe Douglas
A. Talented but crazy. B. Fearless but bad tempered.
C. Optimistic and determined. D. Committed and independent.
( ) 7. What can we learn from Douglas' story
A. Care and diligence bring luck.
B. A good beginning is half done.
C. Ups and downs make one strong.
D. Where there's a will, there's a way.
Some of the world's most important scientists think the idea of people living on Mars will come true one day. Stephen Hawking believed humans must move into space to survive. “Once we spread out into space and establish independent colonies(殖民地), our future should be safe,” he said. Robert Zubrin, a rocket scientist, agrees and thinks starting with Mars makes the most sense. He thinks sending people to Mars will allow us to learn a lot, for example, about the ability of humans to live in a very different environment.
However, scientists will need to terraform Mars for people to be able to live. One of the main goals of terraforming Mars is to warm it up because the average temperature there is about -60℃. One idea for warming Mars is to build factories there that produce greenhouse gases. This could take many centuries. However, it should lead to rainfall and the growth of plants, resulting in more air that people can breathe.
Another big concern for scientists is whether humans can move to Mars and still stay healthy in mind and body. As a test, six people lived in a Mars like environment in Hawaii for a year before “returning to Earth” recently. It was a 1,200 square foot room that was on the side of a volcano and used the sun for energy. Christiane Heinicke, one of the people who lived there, said that one of the biggest issues was feeling bored. So humans on Mars would always need to keep themselves busy with various activities. Another important finding was that the people living together should all be able to get along and work together.
One particular organization based in Europe is planning to send the first humans to Mars before 2030. The organization believes that its project is giving people worldwide the chance to be part of the first human crew ever to live on Mars for good. However, many experts think the project's cost of US $6 billion is too low for it to be successful. The American space agency NASA believes that sending people to Mars would cost about US$100 billion, although this estimate is based on bringing them back to Earth, too. Regardless, it seems that humans living on Mars may well happen a lot sooner than most people believe.
( ) 8. Why is Stephen Hawking mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. To predict the future. B. To show his concern.
C. To introduce the topic. D. To advertise space living.
( ) 9. What does the underlined word “terraform” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Warm up a planet.
B. Move to a planet.
C. Construct a planet.
D. Change the environment on a planet.
( )10. What can you learn from the text
A. The budget of the project is cost effective.
B. Greenhouse gases are a must for living on Mars.
C. Hawaii is a place with Mars like environment.
D. Humans living on Mars will be a reality in the not too distant future.
( )11. What could be a suitable title for the text
A. Life on Mars B. Homes on Mars
C. Mars Exploration D. Escape from Planet Earth
As one of the driest deserts on Earth, the Atacama is a bucket list destination for star observing tourists who come for some of the clearest view of the night sky. As its rocky landscape is much like Mars, the desert has even attracted the attention of NASA, which has tested Rovers there.
But the Atacama has also got attention as one of the world's fast growing dumps(垃圾场) of used clothes, thanks to the rapid mass production of inexpensive clothing known as fast fashion. The phenomenon has created so much waste that the UN calls it “an environmental and social emergency”. The challenge is turning off that tap.
The numbers tell the tale. Between 2000 and 2014, clothing production doubled and people began buying 60 percent more clothes and wearing them for half as long as they once did. Three fifths of all clothing is estimated to end up in landfills within a year of production—that can translate to a truckload of used clothing dumped or burned every second. Most of the facilities are in South Asia or Africa, where the nations receiving those loads cannot handle the amount. The scene in northern Chile has been called “the great fashion garbage patch”. Hills of used clothes, with labels from all over the world, stretch as far as the eye can see on the outskirts of Alto Hospicio, a city of 120,000 residents.
New efforts, large and small, are under way to deal with clothing waste. In 2018, Franklin Zepeda founded a company that produces building insulation panels(建筑隔热板) from the waste. “I was inspired by the idea that there was a great deal of waste that could perfectly be changed into raw materials to make new products, reducing the amount of clothes in our desert,” he says.
These are small but crucial(关键的) steps. The most promising solution—one that can solve the problem in a wider range—lies in the hands of the Chilean government.
( )12. What attracts the star observing tourists to the Atacama
A. The clear night sky. B. The rocky landscape.
C. The driest desert. D. Mars like scenery.
( )13. What can be inferred about Franklin Zepeda's company
A. It is expert in producing panels.
B. It changes waste into raw materials.
C. It makes the desert into a tourist attraction.
D. It makes full use of the waste in the desert.
( )14. What will probably be talked about next
A. The promising future of Chile.
B. Support from other governments.
C. Chilean government's measures.
D. Similar problems in other countries.
( )15. What can be the best title for the passage
A. A Bucket List Destination B. Fashion Waste in Atacama
C. NASA's Attention on Atacama D. Efforts to Deal with Fast Fashion

Over recent years, AI has become accessible to everyone, significantly making our lives easier compared to before. However, there are risks as well as benefits. __16__
Be critical(批判性的). AI can do amazing things, like create images or write stories, but it does not reflect on what it is writing. It will put text together in a way that makes sense but often cannot read “between the lines”. __17__ You can use this as an opportunity to develop critical thinking skills.
Watch out for chatbots. Chatbots are designed to simulate(模拟) conversations as if they were another human being. But there may not be any human checks on improper content. Don't forget that the “person” you're speaking to is actually a machine, not a human. __18__It only shows language based on pre written models and rules.
__19__ With all the focus on AI text, you might not notice that pictures and videos are also part of the AI. Your photos and facial image become available to AI when uploaded, which makes it harder to protect your identity. So be careful about your privacy and always remember that any data you upload to the Internet can be stored, scanned and processed by AI.
However, the developments in this field are highly exciting. And with open policy conversations and some oversight, AI can be a powerful learning and engagement tool. __20__
A. Understand AI's limitations.
B. Pay attention to visual uploads.
C. It does not share your ideals, beliefs, culture or religion.
D. If left unaccompanied, chatbots could feed into your curiosity.
E. Here are three things you can keep in mind as you use AI in everyday life.
F. This means every word and sentence that AI creates should be treated carefully.
G. The potential benefits that could arise from using this technology are endless.

Training for a marathon is one of the most physically demanding activities you can willingly put yourself through. And when the race day finally comes after months of training and hours spent running on the sports field, you want to finish the race well. But sometimes, that just doesn't happen.
A warm moment happened among three runners, and with the help of two other runners, there was a runner who reached the finish line and finished the race. It's reported that the three runners didn't know each other before the race.
That moment happened at the 2023 London Marathon. A runner named Louis experienced this as he worked his way toward the end of the race. The man began to double over(弓身) and was on the edge of collapsing(昏倒) as other runners passed by.
Clearly, he was too tired to finish the race. But it was only 200 meters left. And he might fall to the ground at any time. So tired, Louis fell to the ground and looked white and upset. At that moment, a runner saw Louis who needed help, so the runner ran to him and picked him up.
“Are you OK?” the runner asked Louis.
“I am too tired to keep running,” Louis replied.
“Come on! Let me support you to the finish line 200 meters away,” the runner said and grabbed his arm.
“It is very kind of you,” Louis said happily.
With the help of the runner, there were only 150 meters away from the finish line. But it seemed that he couldn't hold Louis steady enough. Louis was in a bad condition and would fall to the ground at any time. The runner was very anxious and watched helplessly as other runners ran to the finish line, not knowing what to do.
Although the runner tried his best to support Louis steady, Louis fell to the ground again.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;

One possible version:
The_First Ever_Food_Festival
Aimed at providing an opportunity for students to enjoy diverse food and learn about its culture, our school held the first ever Food Festival last week.
During the festival, every class set up food stands with various food for students to try. Cooking classes were arranged in which students learned how to cook and explored the culture of traditional cuisines. The highlight was the cooking show where students displayed their cooking talents.
All the students thought highly of the festival, saying it not only satisfied their taste buds but also deepened their understanding of food culture.
One possible version:
Just_at_that_moment,_another_runner_came_from_behind_Louis. Shortly after, the runner appeared on Louis' other side, grabbed his arm and held Louis steady enough to keep going. “Let me help you,” the runner said to Louis. Louis' eyes were filled with tears. Then the three ran together and encouraged each other. With these two runners' help, there were only 50 meters away from the finish line. All the runners cheered them on, “Come on! You can do it!” They kept running to the finish line and sweat streamed down their faces.
With_the_help_of_the_two_runners,_Louis_finally_reached_the_finish_line._The two runners quickly took good care of Louis. Louis hugged them and expressed great thanks to them. The two runners who selflessly helped Louis became famous on the Internet. The three runners became good friends and decided to meet at next year's London Marathon. Together, the three runners made their way to the finish line. The warm moment became a part of what made the experience so special. Though the three guys didn't finish first, they won that day.
