Here comes a time for every family when the tables turn and the parent has to answer to the child. Mine came recently when my wife and I visited our son in Los Angeles.
“Dad, don't leave the water running when you brush your teeth,” Nathaniel admonished_on our first night. All right, I figured, this is California, where drought(干旱) is a concern. But then more followed. Not to leave my awkward walking shoes sitting out, and did I even need such ugly footwear Don't wear a neck warmer when walking the dogs in the morning—it will warm up when we get to the park. And do we have to take a shower before we drive to Topanga
At the beginning, I wondered how I raised such a bossy child. But I recalled my own words when he was young: “Someday, you'll have your own home and can live however you want. Until then, do as we say.” Now, it was payback time.
I remembered being angry at my own father's commands growing up, how he always tidied my desk or came into my room at dusk to close the windows. And so I smilingly followed Nathaniel's nagging(唠叨).
On our last afternoon, we were walking along El Matador Beach and hit an extended patch of rocks—clearly the end of the line, I thought. Nathaniel wouldn't hear of it and encouraged me to walk across the largest one to the next, patiently telling me where to place my arthritic(患关节炎的) feet and hands as ocean waves came close. I was terrified, but after a couple hundred yards we eventually reached a fresh sandy beach.
“You did it! I'm really proud,” he said, smiling, as if I'd just learned to ride a bike. It was then that I knew for sure that the son also rises to fatherhood.

Australia officially listed koalas across its eastern coast as “endangered”. Conservationists said koala populations had crashed in much of eastern Australia over the past two decades, warning that they were now sliding towards extinction.
The koala, a globally recognized symbol of Australia's unique wildlife, had been listed as “vulnerable(易危的)” on the eastern coast just a decade earlier. “We are taking unprecedented action to protect the koala,” the Minister of Environment, Sussan Ley said, highlighting a recent government promise of Aus $50 million to protect and recover koalas' habitats.
Environmentalists welcomed the koalas' new status but blamed Australia's failure to protect the species so far. “Koalas have gone from no listing to vulnerable to endangered within a decade. That is a shockingly fast decline,” said WWF Australia's conservation scientist Stuart Blanch. “Today's decision is welcome, but it won't stop koalas from sliding towards extinction unless it's accompanied by stronger laws to protect their forest homes.”
Alexia Wellbelove of the Humane Society International said east coast koalas could be extinct by 2050 if no action was taken. “We can't afford any more clearing,” she said. “The extinction of koalas does not have to happen,” she added. “We must stop allowing their homes to be cleared for mines, new houses, agricultural projects and industrial logging(伐木).”
Australia's koalas had been living on a “knife edge” even before the “Black Summer” bush fires of 20192020 because of land clearing, drought, disease, car strikes and dog attacks, said Josey Sharrad, wildlife campaign manager at the International Fund for Animal Welfare. “We should never have allowed things to get to the point where we are at risk of losing a national icon(象征),” Sharrad said. “The bush fires were the final straw. This must be a wake up call to Australia and the government to move much faster to protect critical habitats from development and land clearing, and seriously deal with the influences of climate change.”
( ) 8. What is the problem mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. Koala populations have increased quickly.
B. Koalas enjoy too much popularity in Australia.
C. Koalas get crushed by other animals.
D. Koalas are at risk of extinction.
( ) 9. Why did environmentalists welcome the koalas' new status
A. This would stop koalas from extinction.
B. They could blame the government's failure.
C. This could lead to stronger action to protect koalas.
D. They may have time to recover koalas' habitats.
( )10. How does the author prove his idea
A. By making a comparison.
B. By analyzing figures.
C. By doing a survey.
D. By quoting environmentalists' words.
( )11. What's the purpose of this text
A. To call on people to protect koalas.
B. To show the causes of koalas' disappearance.
C. To show koalas' important status.
D. To present environmentalists' words.
If talking near a busy road is tough, think how hard it is to raise a baby bird in that place. A new experiment on growing birds shows traffic noise has a negative influence on their growth and leads to lifelong harm.
Researchers already knew too much noise can disturb breeding birds, making it more difficult for parents to communicate with and care for their nestlings. But it wasn't clear whether the noise itself could directly harm young birds.
Mariette, a behavioral ecologist at Deakin University, and her team set out to answer that question with zebra finches held in an aviary(鸟舍) on campus in Melbourne, Australia. For 5 nights they played eggs either road noise or zebra finch songs for several hours. The sounds were kept at a moderate volume of 65 decibels. Other eggs were left in silence. After the eggs hatched, the baby birds received one of two treatments—road noise or zebra finch songs—for another 9 nights. The nestlings heard the sounds in a separate room and then were returned to their nests.
Eggs that heard traffic noise hatched 19% less often than those that heard bird songs. As the baby birds developed, they also showed worrying development signs. Those exposed to noise grew slower and had health problems. Their blood had fewer red blood cells, and their cells were under stress. When they became adults, they had half as many babies as the birds that heard songs when they were young. “I've never had such clear results in any experiments before,” Mariette says.
How exactly traffic noise harms the young birds remains a mystery. Auditory(听觉的) parts of the brain connect to areas important for development and the regulation of emotion and learning, so it's likely that noise could disrupt healthy growth. Mariette says she would like to conduct other experiments to learn what aspects of noise are harmful. For example, it could be that hearing constant sound without any rhythm—unlike song—is somehow stressful.
( )12. What does the underlined word “nestlings” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Baby birds. B. Sick birds. C. Mother birds. D. Birds' eggs.
( )13. Why did Mariette and her team conduct the experiment
A. To test the volume of noise on campus.
B. To answer a question about zebra finches.
C. To compare road noise with zebra finch songs.
D. To examine the influence of noise on little birds.
( )14. How did the noise affect the birds' growth according to the experiment
A. It made them less stressful.
B. It prevented the birds having babies.
C. It led to the slow growth of the birds.
D. It reduced parent birds' red blood cells.
( )15. What is Mariette most likely to study next
A. Functions of the auditory parts of birds' brains.
B. The harmful parts of noise to young birds' growth.
C. The impact of rhythmic sounds on birds' development.
D. The impact of traffic noise on birds' emotion and learning.

Grandpa David's birthday was a week away. Michael and his parents were busy planning a big party for him when Grandpa invited him for a walk. Thinking of Grandpa's joy in waving at passers by, Michael eagerly agreed. “I'm ready, Grandpa!” Michael replied, watching Grandpa put on his beloved red hat before they went out.
As they walked, Grandpa cheerfully waved at the car that drove by. A young boy leaned out of the window and shouted, “There's the man in the red hat!” Grandpa waved to him and the people in the next three cars, all of whom joyfully waved back. Although Michael didn't understand why Grandpa was doing so, he thought it interesting.
As they turned a corner, an old man with a brown hat was walking towards them. “Hi, Joseph, it's good to see you,” Grandpa greeted him warmly. “I hate going out in winter!” Joseph complained, pulling his scarf up over his mouth and nose as he walked by. “He's bad tempered!” Michael said in a low voice. But Grandpa whispered to him that Joseph was just lonely, for he lived by himself, and suggested they might be able to help.
Suddenly, a rush of wind blew off Joseph's brown hat, sending it towards the pond before it disappeared from sight. Joseph was very upset, shaking in the cold. Without hesitation, Grandpa lent a helping hand. “You can take mine if you don't mind,” he said, handing his red hat over to Joseph.
“Thanks,” Joseph said, putting on the red hat and continuing on his way. A car passed, and the people inside waved at Joseph, recognizing him as “the man in the red hat”. Another car passed and honked. At first confused, Joseph soon caught on, waving back at the third car that greeted him.
Observing this heart warming exchange, Grandpa and Michael couldn't help but smile, realizing Grandpa's plan to brighten Joseph's day was taking effect.
A week later, a big party was held for Grandpa's birthday.

根据第二段中Nathaniel说的话“Dad, don't leave the water running when you brush your teeth”和第三段中“At the beginning, I wondered how I raised such a bossy child.”以及第四段中“And so I smilingly followed Nathaniel's nagging.”
根据第一段“Here comes a time for every family when the tables turn and the parent has to answer to the child.”和最后一段“It was then that I knew for sure that the son also rises to fatherhood.”

根据画线词所在句“Researchers already knew too much noise can disturb breeding birds, making it more difficult for parents to communicate with and care for their nestlings.”,尤其是句中parents一词可知,需要成鸟照顾的应是幼鸟,故可推知,画线词应与A项语义一致。
根据第二段中“But it wasn't clear whether the noise itself could directly harm young birds.”和第三段中“Mariette, a behavioral ecologist at Deakin University, and her team set out to answer that question with zebra finches held in an aviary on campus in Melbourne, Australia.”
根据第四段中“Those exposed to noise grew slower and had health problems. Their blood had fewer red blood cells, and their cells were under stress. When they became adults, they had half as many babies as the birds that heard songs when they were young.”
根据最后一段中“Mariette says she would like to conduct other experiments to learn what aspects of noise are harmful.”

“The idea for this special day came from the country of Bangladesh”与“Bangladeshis mark 21 February”前后两句为并列关系,应用并列连词and连接。
分析句子结构可知,这里涉及固定短语have the right to do sth,意为“有权做某事”。

One possible version:
To_everyone's_surprise,_Joseph_came_with_a_present. “Here, this is for you,” he said, handing over a new red hat, much like the one that Grandpa had given him. “Thank you for your red hat! It brought me lots of comfort and joy,” Joseph said in a choked voice. Grandpa patted him on the shoulder, put on the red hat and invited him to join in his daily walk later. Now, there were two men in red hats. The whole room burst into cheers and applause as Joseph and Grandpa shared a warm hug.
After_the_party,_Michael_and_two_men_in_red_hats_began_their_daily_walk. Grandpa and Joseph walked side by side, waving cheerfully to the passing cars. More and more people waved back, greeting the two men in red hats. Michael, seeing Joseph's change, finally understood Grandpa's joy in greeting others and the power of a simple act of kindness, like giving a red hat. From then on, wearing red hats became a routine during their daily walks, and Michael looked forward to this moment of community connection every day.
