Carlow Restaurants: Choosing a restaurant
When traveling, almost everyone wants to enjoy a good local meal. It’s part of the traveling experience. However, by jumping in without much fore-thought or research, you could end up footing the bill for a below satisfactory meal.
Here is some advice on how to choose a perfect Carlow restaurant:
Prepare: Use websites such as Tripadvisor or Yelp before you go there to pick out restaurants that you would like to visit. You can use these websites to see star-ratings and read reviews from previous customers to figure out if it is a good quality restaurant with good service. Using websites such as Justeatit can allow you to review the menu in many restaurants. However these websites promote restaurants that offer a take-away service, missing many excellent sit-down restaurants that do not, in the area.
Ask the locals: Check out where the locals go to eat. Be sure to ask your hotel reception (接待) or guest-house keeper what suggestions they might have for you. Their local knowledge and experience will help you choose which restaurants to decide upon. Be sure to ask people you meet at the local farmers market, if you visit it.
Use the internet: Try to find local blogs which provide food reviews. You can also find individual restaurant websites to view their menus and image galleries. This allows you make a better informed decision on whether or not you would like to eat there.
Be spontaneous: Tripadvisor and other websites have apps for smartphones that allow you to check the restaurants in your immediate surroundings.
Ask your friends: Before making the trip, ask anyone you know who has stayed there before for any suggestions. Their advice can make the decision very simple if you decide to do the same. It can help you avoid a place where they had a bad experience also.

I did my first marathon at 25. I’d taken up running go get fit and thought I’d give it a try. However, I started too fast, found it very painful and struggled to finish. Then, seven years ago, when I was 43, I went to talk with someone who had just done the Sahara Desert race. I felt so inspired and promised I would run it, too.
A year later, I completed 24-hour ultra-marathon in the Namibian desert, I wondered what on earth i could do next. My father, a former soldier, had just died of cancer and I wanted to gather fund(资金) for a soldiers charity in his memory. There are 66 cities in the UK so I came up with a challenge — a 50 km marathon in each city, no rest days in between. On the first day, I ran for around six to seven hours, eating along the way to get more energy. On day two, I tore my right Achilles tendon (跟腱). I slowed my pace and thought about the soldiers’ charity I was doing the run for. It was nothing compared with some of their injuries.
Then, on day 26, it got worse. I couldn’t bear even the light touch of an ice cube. I had to walk through the day, which took almost 11 hours. I kept telling myself I couldn’t fail. If I quit, the pain would have stopped , but I knew I would regret it for the rest of my life, On May 20 I finished, four days after my 50th birthday.
It’s been a long progression from being an unfit slacker (懒散的人) to where I am now. I have a better body now than at any point in my life.Anyone can do this, I’m not a superhuman. I’m just determined, and I have the next thing planned already.
24. How was the author’s first marathon
A. He didn’t finish it. B. He didn’t do it well.
C. He got hurt halfway. D. He fell in love with it.
25. What was the writer’s purpose of running marathons in the UK
A. To raise money for a charity. B. To create a new world record.
C. To prepare for a marathon race. D. To push himself to reach the goal.
26. What does the author think is the most important quality he has
A. Kindness. B. Curiosity. C. Bravery. D. Determination.
27. What can be the best title for the text
A. Never Stop Running B. Running Makes Success
C. Being Prepared for Running D. Running for a Better Future
C
So many of us hold on to little resentments (仇怨) from an argument, a misunderstanding, or some other painful event. We wait for someone else to reach out to us―believing this is the only way we can forgive or rebuild a friendship or family relationship.
A friend of mine whose health isn’t very good, recently told me that she hasn’t spoken to her son in almost three years. She said that she and her son had had a disagreement about his wife and that she wouldn’t speak to him again unless he called first. When I suggested that she be the one to reach out, she resisted at first, “I can’t do that. He’s the one who should apologize.” She was willing to die before reaching out to her only son. After a little gentle encouragement, however, she did decide to be the first one to reach out. To her amazement, her son was grateful for her willingness to call and sincerely said sorry to her. As is usually the case when someone takes the chance and reaches out, everyone wins.
Whenever we hold on to our anger we turn “small thing” into “big thing” in our minds. We start to believe that our positions are more important than our happiness. They are not. If you want to be a more peaceful person you must understand that being right is to let go, and reach out. Let other people be right. This doesn’t mean that you’re wrong. Everything will be fine. You’ll experience the peace of letting go as well as the joy of letting others be right. You’ll also notice that as you reach out and let others be “right” they will become less defensive (戒备的) and more loving toward you. They might even reach back. But if for some reason they don’t that’s okay too. You will have the inner satisfaction of knowing that you have done your part to create a more loving world and certainly you’ll be more peaceful yourself.
28. What does the underlined word “resisted” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Regretted B. Refused. C. Recalled. D. Reminded
29. What happened to the author’s friend after she called her son
A. She realized her mistakes. B. She lost the battle and died.
C. She received her son’s apology. D. She was encouraged by the author.
30. What can we infer from the third paragraph
A. Holding on to the right position leads to resentments.
B. Turning small thing into big one will make a difference.
C. Being peaceful is more important than being right in disagreement.
D. To avoid arguments and misunderstandings means seeking for happiness.
31. What’s the purpose of the passage
A. To tell the readers to reach out first.
B. To instruct the readers how to apologize.
C. To teach the readers how to gain inner peace.
D. To inform the readers the importance of peace.
D
Cooler, higher places may not be very welcoming to some hummingbirds (蜂鸟) trying to escape rising temperatures and other effects of climate change. Anna’s hummingbirds live no higher than about 2,600 meters above sea level. If the birds attempt to expand (扩大) their range to include higher altitudes (海拔), they may struggle to fly well in the thinner air, researchers reported in the Journal of Experimental Biology.
These hummingbirds have expanded their range in the past. Once only found in Southern California, the birds now live as far north as Vancouver, says Austin Spence, an ecologist at the University of California, Davis. That expansion is probably due to climate change and people using feeders to attract hummingbirds, he says.
Spence and colleagues collected 26 Anna’s hummingbirds from different altitudes in the bird’s natural range in California. The team transported the birds to a place about 1,200 meters above sea level and measured their metabolic (新陈代谢的) rate when hovering (盘旋). After relocating the hummingbirds to a field station at an altitude of 3,800 meters, the researchers let the birds rest for at least 12 hours and then measured that rate again.
The rate was 37 percent lower, on average, at the higher altitudes, even though the birds should have been working harder to fly in the thinner air. At higher altitudes, hovering, which takes a lot of energy compared with other forms of flight, is more challenging and requires even more energy, Spence says. The decrease in metabolic rate shows that the birds’ hovering performance was suffering, he says “Low oxygen and low air pressure may be holding them back as they try to move upward.”
Additional work is needed to see whether the birds might be able to better adjust (适应) if given weeks or months to adapt to the conditions at gradually higher altitudes.
32. What factor may have contributed to the expansion of Anna’s Hummingbirds’ range
A. Human use of feeders. B. A lack of food sources.
C. A decrease in temperature. D. A shift in migration patterns.
33. How did scientists study the effects of high altitude on hummingbirds
A. By monitoring their feeding behaviors.
B. By comparing their different forms of flight.
C. By measuring their metabolic rate while hovering.
D. By observing their adaptability to a new environment.
34. Which best describes Anna’s hummingbirds’ hovering performance at higher altitudes
A.Energetic. B. Recovered. C. Unaffected. D. Weakened
35. What further research might be conducted about Anna’s hummingbirds
A. Studying the changes in their hunting methods.
B. Recording their numbers over an extended period.
C. Examining their ability to get used to higher altitudes.
D. Investigating the impact of other bird species on their range.

When 12-year-old Nina Mones was in sixth grade, she struggled to keep up with her math class. And as the teacher pushed ahead with new lessons, she fell further and further behind. Then in the fall of 2019, her school, the Phoenix International Academy, brought in Teach to One 360. “I’m in seventh grade now,” Nina proudly said. “It gave me more confidence in myself.”
“This is a model for personalized learning,” said Sheldon H.Jacobson, professor of computer science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Teach to One 360, and similar systems, often use data analytics(分析) to follow students’ progress, find out their strengths and weaknesses, and adjust teaching methods accordingly. This not only helps students achieve their learning goals more effectively but also encourages a more interactive learning environment.
Until 2020, 27 schools across 11 states have adopted Teach to One. Still, getting schools to sign on to the program has been a challenge. Some teachers are unwilling to try new teaching methods, while others worry that these new forms of technology could perhaps lead to the elimination of their jobs. Schools are often under pressure to follow a traditional curriculum(课程) with textbooks and teacher-led classes to ensure that they cover the content needed for standardized tests. Many worry that turning away from traditional practices could affect test results, which would then affect school rankings and the funding these schools receive.
There is also the cost of purchasing the program, buying computers for students, adding math teachers, and reconstructing classrooms to meet the requirements of different teaching methods. The total costs involved with such programs can vary dramatically, with most school systems having to depend on grants (拨款) in order to cover them.
“You can have the best program in the world, but if you don’t have good operation of it, it’s all for nothing,” said Alfred Cordova, the principal at Taos Middle School.
36.The example of Nina Mones is mentioned in the first paragraph to ________.
A. promote an app B. introduce the topic
C. express an opinion D. show a difficult situation
37.What is the second paragraph mainly about
A. How the program works.
B. Why the program appeals to students.
C. Why the program could change the role of school.
D. How the program will help reduce students’ burdens.
38. What are some of the challenges schools face when adopting Teach to One 360
A. Teachers are eager to try new teaching methods.
B. Schools have plenty of funding to support the program.
C. Traditional textbooks and teacher-led classes are no longer required.
D. Some teachers are unwilling to change and worry about job security.
39. What is Alfred Cordova’s attitude towards the future of personalized learning
A. Hopeful. B. Uncertain. C. Negative. D. Concerned.

Dear David,
I hope this email finds you well. Recently I took part in an exciting event at our school—an exhibition themed “My First Year in High School.” My work was a painting describing my first day at high school, filled with vivid colors and emotions.
I chose this subject because it marks a significant turning point in my life, capturing both excitement and anxiety. It reminded me of the journey’s beginning and the friendships forged since then.
Participating in the exhibition made me realize how much I’ve grown and cherished the memories. I’d love to hear about your high school experiences!

M: Firstly, I should say it’s not all bad. You’ve chosen an interesting topic, and the writing itself is excellent, as usual.
W: Thank you.
M: I can also tell that you feel very strongly about the subject. But you need to use facts and reasoning to support your argument, and don’t let your personal feelings take over. (16)
W: I understand.
M: Now, you could edit it. But if I were you, I’d rewrite it.
W: Thank you, Mr. Thomas. I’ll go home now and get started.
Text 10 (第17题为总结题)
Good morning, everyone. I have a piece of news from Mooringtown Library. Mooringtown Library has set up a new noticeboard for free advertising(广告活动). Local people and companies are welcome to use it.
Space on the board is available for up to four weeks at a time. Notices must be shown in advance to the library’s front desk before being accepted.
They must meet the following requirements. First, all contents must be suitable to be shown to the public. (18) Second, the notice must be written or printed on A4 paper. Third, the dates should not go in the middle or in the upper left-hand corner. They should be written in the bottom right-hand corner. (19) Any notices that do not meet these requirements will not be considered.
If you want to use the board, visit Mooringtown Library front desk with the finished notice. If your notice has been accepted, you will be informed by telephone. (20) That’s all for the news. Thanks for listening.
