No one can believe that the over 6, 300-kilometre Great Wall might disappear some day. Believe it or not, the Great Wall is being destroyed by people. Less than 20 percent of the Great Wall built in the Ming Dynasty is still perfect, and about 80 percent is in danger.
The Great Wall can be called "great" mostly because of its amazing length. If we do nothing to save the Great Wall, it will become wasteland rather than a historic site. The Great Wall is actually a series of walls built and rebuilt by different dynasties over the past 2, 000 years. It began in the Qin Dynasty, and lasted into the Ming Dynasty. The parts built before the Ming Dynasty have nearly disappeared. People are familiar with sections such as Badaling in Beijing and Jiayuguan Pass in Gansu, because they have been open to tourists for many years. But those sections far away from the public eyes have been almost forgotten.
Few local people knew the 3-metre-high walls made of earth and stones beside them are part of the Great Wall. The lack of knowledge is considered as one of the main reasons behind humans.
The bricks on the Great Wall are carried off by countryside people to build their houses. Rubbish is spread over the battlements. Those who destroyed and are destroying the Great Wall know its name, but don't know its cultural meaning. The local farmers not only carried off the body of the Great Wall but dug out the entire base.
It is necessary to protect the Great Wall. First of all, the officials should be aware of the importance of the Great Wall. Young Chinese should know more about the nation's great civilisation and learn to love it.
1.Why does the author say the Great Wall might disappear
A.It is useless from now on.
B.It will be replaced by a new one.
C.It is too old to be used again.
D.Some parts of it are being destroyed.
2.Which of the following is TRUE
A.The Great Wall was protected well.
B.The Great Wall was completed in the Ming Dynasty.
C.The last part of the Great Wall was built in the Qin Dynasty.
D.There are only two wonders in the world.
3.The underlined part "those sections far away from the public eyes" in paragraph 2 refers to the parts of the Great Wall ____.
A.that nobody can watch
B.that are too far to be seen
C.that are too difficult to understand
D.that are not well known to the public

A team of biologists (生物学家) recently studied wildlife in the forests of northern Ecuador. While doing so, they made a surprising discovery: a Mindo harlequin toad (明多斑足蟾). The creature hadn't been seen alive in 30 years. The scientists couldn't believe their eyes. "It took our brains a while to believe it was a Mindo harlequin toad," says Melissa Costales, a conservation biologist from University of New Brunswick.
The Mindo harlequin is the latest harlequin toad species "to come back from the dead," says Costales. Since 2003, eight others have been found, three of them in Ecuador.
Until recently, 13 of the 25 species of harlequin toads in Ecuador had gone unseen since the 1980s or early 1990s. Scientists thought most of them had been killed by a disease called chytrid (壶菌). This illness is especially harmful to the harlequin toad.
Costales says the Mindo harlequin toad may have developed a resistance (抵抗力) to the disease. That would explain the toad's reappearance. And it could spell good news for other harlequins. Since discovering the first one, Costales's team has found five more. They were all tested for chytrid. None had the disease. But that doesn't mean the survival of the species is guaranteed (保证), Costales says. The harlequin toad is still endangered.
Costales is developing a conservation plan with a zoology museum in Ecuador. She wants to make sure the Mindo harlequin toad doesn't fall back into extinction. "Each rediscovery gives us a second chance to develop better conservation plans," she says. "Not every day do we have the chance to rediscover a species that we believed to be extinct."
8.Why were the scientists surprised at finding the Mindo harlequin toad
A.It could live for 30 years.
B.It had been thought to be extinct.
C.It was a foreign species in Ecuador.
D.It lived together with other species.
9.What does Costales say about the Mindo harlequin toad
A.It is huge in number.
B.It might disappear soon.
C.It can spread diseases quickly.
D.It may have survived chytrid.
10.What does Costales plan to do
A.Treat harlequin toads for chytrid.
B.Discover more endangered species.
C.Save the Mindo harlequin toad from extinction.
D.Take harlequin toads back to the zoology museum.
11.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Lost and Found B.Back to the Wild
C.Hope for Animals D.The Known and the Unknown

In the early 1990s, Ashok Kumar and I ran TRAFFIC-India, an organisation that worked to stop illegal wildlife trade in India. That was when the first letter from the famous American conservationist (自然环境保护主义者), George Schaller, arrived on our desk. Tibetan antelopes were being killed in their thousands, he wrote, and their wool (毛) was taken illegally to India. "No use in India for antelope wool," we wrote back, not knowing the seriousness of the illegal trade here. Schaller sent us back pictures to prove it and asked us to begin a Tibetan investigation.
We dug around and found that Schaller was right. We realised that antelope wool was the same as shahtoosh, the famous Kashmiri shawl (披肩). The shawl was made from the underwool of Tibetan antelopes, considered the warmest and softest wool in the world. A single shawl needed the wool of three to five antelopes. We had to save the animal.
Then began India's first campaign (运动) to protect Tibetan antelopes. A lot of designers and models joined us. Slowly, the message was being driven home: shahtoosh was out of style, shahtoosh was illegal and alternative (可替代的) shawls would save the antelopes from extinction.
There were, of course, those who tried to buck the campaign. The wife of a well-known army officer of India refused to give up her shahtoosh till she was forced out of it. She said: "I know the lovely antelope is dying and I so want to save it. But, the shawl is so light on my shoulders!"
Someone suggested farming the antelopes, but studies showed that it was an impractical idea. The antelopes could not even survive in low altitude zoos. The underwool is nature's gift to the animal to keep it warm at great heights. Later, we set up a business to process high quality pashmina wool and make an alternative shawl.
In 2000, good news came in from China. With strict policies in place, the number of Tibetan antelopes was on the rise again.
12.What did the author think of the antelope wool trade Schaller mentioned at first
A.It wasn't true.
B.It wasn't unusual.
C.It was a serious matter.
D.It was difficult to deal with.
13.What can be inferred about India's first campaign to protect Tibetan antelopes
A.It got a lot of support.
B.It was unacceptable to models.
C.It failed to achieve its purpose.
D.It was brought to an end by Ashok Kumar.
14.What does the underlined word "buck" in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Lead. B.Fight against.
C.Change. D.Keep up.
15.What measure did India take to save Tibetan antelopes
A.Cutting down the shawl business.
B.Asking farmers to raise antelopes.
C.Stopping keeping antelopes in zoos.
D.Encouraging the use of pashmina wool shawls.

Want to catch more fish at night Watch the moon! Using the moon, you are able to learn several things about fish at night. During a full moon night, you are most likely to find fish hiding in the shadows. When you find shadows on the water(from trees, etc), you know exactly where you need to cast your line.
If the moonlight is not shining down on the water and there are no shadows, the fish will be separated in the water, making your job of finding them much more difficult.
On the other side of the coin, it seems like the fish are more likely to hit the bait(饵)when the moon is hidden, either by clouds or a quarter moon. So, the real trick is to use the moon to decide how you are going to fish that particular night.
If you have a bright, full moon, head for the shadows on the water. If you are on the water and the moon is nowhere in sight, you can go straight to your favorite spot and fish like you normally do, but expect to get more frequent and harder hits on your line.
Some fishermen swear they only fish during a full moon, others say no moonlight is best. I say, both are best; you just have to change your style depending on how much moonlight you have that night.
Try it out for yourself and see if you get the same results. This tip alone has helped me catch some of the biggest fish in my life. Hopefully it will help you do the same.

Traditionally, robots have been hard, made of metal and other hard material. But a team of scientists at Harvard University in the US has managed to build an entirely soft robot — one that draws inspiration (灵感) from an octopus (章鱼).
Described in science journal Nature, the "Octobot" could pave the way for more effective autonomous robots that could be used in the search, rescue and exploration. "The Octobot is a minimal system which may serve as a foundation for a new generation of completely soft, autonomous robots," the study's authors wrote.
Robots built for precise, repetitive movements in a controlled environment don't do so well on the rough ground or in unpredictable conditions. And they aren't especially safe around humans because they're made out of hard and heavy parts that could be possibly dangerous to their users.
So researchers have been working on building soft robots for several ten years. They've taken inspiration from nature, looking to animals from jellyfish to cockroaches, which are often made up of more soft matter.
But creating a completely soft robot remains a problem. Even if engineers build a silicone (硅酮) body, it's still a big challenge to make soft versions of essential parts, such as a source of power.
"Although soft robotics is still in its early stage, it holds great prospects for several applications, such as searches and rescue operations and exploration", Barbara Mazzolai and Virgilio Mattoli of the Italian Institute of Technology's Center for MicroBioRobotics wrote. "Soft robots might also open up new ways to improving wellness and the quality of life."
27.What's the special feature of the Octobot
A.It's completely soft. B.It's made of hard metal.
C.It's very small. D.It looks like an octopus.
28.What's the disadvantage of traditional robots

C.They can't predict conditions.
D.They can't behave well all the time.
29.One of the biggest difficulties is to build soft robots' ____.
A.silicone body B.complex parts
C.precise movements D.soft power source
30.What's the possible application of the Octobot
A.Medical research. B.Life rescue.
C.Machine operation. D.House cleaning.

3D printing is becoming more and more popular. We are now able to print things such as clothing, musical instruments and model cars. People and businesses are able to create the things they need very quickly and easily using 3D printers.
But can you imagine printing food Some scientists are trying to create a new dining experience by doing this. They hope that having a 3D printer in the kitchen will become as common as the microwave or the fridge. Scientists say that they are easy to use: you simply have to choose what you want to eat and put the uncooked food ‘inks' into the printer. You can also change the instructions to make the food exactly how you want it. This means that it would be very quick and easy to create tasty and healthy meals.
Using 3D printers to create your meals would also be saving the environment. There would be less need for traditional growing and transporting as food production would be much simpler. Printing food could also help people who are experiencing the swallowing disorder. They could make the printer to print softer foods so that they would not have trouble swallowing them.
However, some people think that a future of 3D-printed food would cause many problems. It could take away many jobs, including those for growing and transporting food. Likewise, traditional cafés and restaurants might lose business. Also, people are worrying about whether the printed food is nutritious: Is it really possible to get the nutrients we need from foodbased inks What's more, cooking and eating together with family and friends has long been a traditional and enjoyable activity. It is hard to imagine a world where the pastime of cooking is dead and meals can be created at the touch of a button.
31.Which of the following best describes 3D food printing
A.Quick and easy. B.Impossible and failed.
C.Nutritious and tasty. D.Unhealthy and difficult.
32.Paragraph 3 mainly tells us about ____.

"Universal history, the history of what man has accomplished in this world, is at bottom the History of the Great Men who have worked here," wrote the Victorian sage Thomas Carlyle. Well, not any more it is not.
Suddenly, Britain looks to have fallen out with its favourite historical form. This could be no more than a passing literary craze, but it also points to a broader truth about how we now approach the past: less concerned with learning from forefathers and more interested in feeling their pain. Today, we want empathy, not inspiration.
From the earliest days of the Renaissance, the writing of history meant recounting the exemplary lives of great men. In 1337, Petrarch began work on his rambling writing De Viris Illustribus (On Famous Men), highlighting the virtus (or virtue) of classical heroes. Petrarch celebrated their greatness in conquering fortune and rising to the top. This was the biographical tradition which Niccolo Machiavelli turned on its head. In The Prince, he championed cunning, ruthlessness, and boldness, rather than virtue, mercy and justice, as the skills of successful leaders.
Over time, the attributes of greatness shifted. The Romantics commemorated the leading painters and authors of their day, stressing the uniqueness of the artist's personal experience rather than public glory. By contrast, the Victorian author Samual Smiles wrote Self-Help as a catalogue of the worthy lives of engineers, industrialists and explores. "The valuable examples which they furnish of the power of self-help, if patient purpose, resolute working and steadfast integrity, issuing in the formulation of truly noble and many character, exhibit," wrote Smiles. "what it is in the power of each to accomplish for himself." His biographies of James Walt, Richard Arkwright and Josiah Wedgwood were held up as beacons to guide the working man through his difficult life.
This was all a bit bourgeois (庸俗的) for Thomas Carlyle, who focused his biographies on the truly heroic lives of Martin Luther, Oliver Cromwell and Napoleon Bonaparte. These epochal figures represented lives hard to imitate, but to be acknowledged as possessing higher authority than mere mortals.
Not everyone was convinced by such bombast (浮夸的描写): "The history of all existing society is the history of class struggle" wrote Marx and Engels in The Communist Manifesto. "It is man, real living man, who does all that." And history should be the story of the masses and their record of struggle.
This was the tradition which revolutionized our appreciation of the past. It transformed the public history: downstairs became just as fascinating as upstairs. In place of Thomas Carlyle, Britain nurtured Christopher Hill, EP Thompson and Eric Hobsbawm. Whole new realms of understanding—from gender to race to cultural studies—were opened up as scholars unpicked the diversity of lost societies.
35.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 mean
A.History is no more than a pressing literary craze.
B.History should be the story of some epochal heroes.
C.History is a guide through a tough life for working men.
D.History should be inspirational rather than empathetic.
36.According to the article, ____ dismissed virtues as unnecessary for successful rulers.
A.Petrarch B.Samuel Smiles
C.Thomas Carlyle D.Niccolo Machiavelli
37.According to the article, Marx and Engels ____.
A.emphasized the virtues of real living men
B.stressed the uniqueness of personal experiences
C.focused on the worthy lives of truly heroic people
D.held that it is the people who make their own history
38.What can we infer from the article
A.How people appreciate the past has never changed.
B.History from below stood alongside biographies of great men.
C.New realms of understanding great men in history were opened up.
D.Christopher Hill, EP Thompson, and Eric Hobsbaw m were Victorian sages.

Some people bring out the best in you in a way that you might never have fully realized on your own. My mom was one of those people.
My father died when I was nine months old. While I was growing up, we lived a very hard life. We had little money, but my mom gave me a lot of love. Each night, she sat me on her lap(大腿部) and spoke the words that would change my life, "Kemmons, you are certain to be a great man and you can do anything in life if you work hard enough to get it."
At fourteen, I was hit by a car and the doctors said I would never walk again. Every day, my mom spoke to me in her gentle, loving voice, telling me that no matter what those doctors said, I could walk again if I wanted to. She drove that message so deep into my heart that I finally believed her. A year later, I returned to school—walking on my own!
When the Great Depression(大萧条) hit, my mom lost her job. Then I left school to support both of us. At that moment, I was determined never to be poor again.
Over the years, I experienced various levels of business success. But the real turning point occurred on a vacation I took with my wife and five kids in 1951.I was dissatisfied with the second-class hotels available for families and was angry that they charged an extra $2 for each child. That was too expensive for the average American family. I told my wife that I was going to open a motel(汽车旅馆) for families that would never charge extra for children. There were plenty of doubters at that time.
Not surprisingly, Mom was one of my strongest supporters. She worked behind the desk and even designed the room style. As in any business, we experienced a lot of challenges. But with my mom's words deeply rooted in my soul, I never doubted we would succeed. Fifteen years later, we had the largest hotel system in the world—Holiday Inn. In 1979 my company had 1,759 inns(小旅馆) in more than fifty countries with an income of $1 billion a year.
You may not have started life in the best situations. But if you can find a task in life worth working for and believe in yourself, nothing will stop you.

Bessie Mae Kelley was an animation (动画) pioneer, yet much of her story and work was lost to history and left undocumented—until now. The incredible discovery of Kelley's rich past was made by Mindy Johnson, who spent five years searching for evidence.
According to Mindy Johnson, Kelley was studying art at New York's Pratt Institute, when, as a part of the first generation of cinema, she fell in love with the medium. Kelley began working in the industry doing menial jobs, but she worked her way up and she was eventually working alongside Max Fleischer, Paul Terry and Walter Lantz, animators who were household names.
Kelley hand-drew cartoons in cooperation with Paul Terry for his famed animated adaptation of Aesop's Fables, including the mouse couple that came to be known as Milton and Mary. "Even Walt Disney publicly stated that when he began his studio in Kansas City, he wanted to make cartoons as good as Aesop's Fables," Johnson said.
And earlier this week, Johnson presented her discoveries at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, where she also premiered (首映) two restored short films hand-drawn and directed by Kelley. The first is a five-minute film entitled Flower Fairies, completed in 1921. The second three-minute film from 1922 is called A Merry Christmas. Previously, historians had considered Tissa David to be the earliest example of a woman who directed her own hand-drawn work Bonjour Paris in 1953. The earliest surviving animated film directed and animated by a woman would be Lotte Reiniger's The Ornament of the Lovestruck Heart from 1919, which is far from the hand-drawn variety.
Johnson, who teaches animation history at California Institute of the Arts and Drexel University, says, "Discovering Kelley's contribution to animation isn't just about filling in the gaps of history. It also motivates a new generation of animators. I can see my female students standing a little taller and more confident, about their work when they learn about Kelley."
47.What does the underlined word "menial" in paragraph 2 mean
A.Unskilled. B.Demanding. C.Well-paid. D.Risk-taking.
48.What does the author want to show by mentioning Kelley's work on Aesop's Fables
A.Her fondness for animals.
B.Her good teamwork spirit.
C.Her early influence in animation.
D.Her close relationship with Walt Disney.
49.Which is the earliest-known animation hand-drawn and directed by a woman
A.Bonjour Paris.
B.Flower Fairies.
C.A Merry Christmas.
D.The Ornament of the Lovestruck Heart.
50.What does Johnson think of the discovery of Kelley's role in animation
A.It excites students'interest in history.
B.It is an inspiration to female animators.
C.It helps reexamine women animators' work.
D.It is a reminder of the value of surviving films.

A young musician carrying a violin case in Paraguay makes her way to rehearsal(彩排).What's inside the case, however, is no ordinary violin. It's made from a salad bowl, a CD, and large pieces of wood.
The violinist, Ada Rios, 13, is a member of the Orchestra of Instruments Recycled from Cateura, a group of teen musicians whose instruments are made from the trash near their village. Cateura, just outside Paraguay's capital, Asuncion, is a poor area built on a very large landfill (垃圾填埋地).Cateura is home to 2, 500 families, with 20 teens in the orchestra. They play everything from the classical works of Beethoven to Beatles' songs.
Now the orchestra is attracting world-wide attention. The musicians are being filmed for a documentary, Land-fillHarmonic.The film will show how people in Cateura turn trash into instruments, and the effect that being part of an orchestra can have on kids.
In Paraguay, nearly 35 percent of the population lives in poverty (贫穷).In Cateura, a real musical instrument costs more than a house, says Favio Chavez, the orchestra's founder. About 1, 500 tons of waste are left at the landfill each day, and the people there earn a living searching through the garbage for things they can recycle and sell.
Chavez started teaching music in Cateura five years ago as a way to keep kids out of trouble. When he needed more instruments, he asked the landfill workers if they could build some from the trash. First, the men repaired a broken drum. Next, they built a guitar . The orchestra took off from there.
The group has already performed in Brazil and Colombia. The teens will travel to Arizona this year to play at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix. Ada says music has already changed her life."When I listen to the sound of a violin, I feel excited, "she says.
