When Preeti Maske took up cycling at the age of 40, she had no idea a new hobby would turn into a passion, and then a profession with five Guinness World Records. A surprise first-place victory in a five-km fun run at her children’s school was what first fuelled Maske’s adventurous side.
In school, Maske played national-level hockey (曲棍球) and basketball at a state level, but after marriage and motherhood, sports were firmly in her past. However, the podium (领奖台) finish at her children’s school refreshed her competitive spirit.“Many women in their 40s feel like their dreams have been crashed,” says the mother of two. “Maybe I felt this more keenly and it showed.”
It was a cycling organization from Kashmir to Kanyakumari — down the length of the country — that made Maske take up cycling seriously. She kept improving and training, but being one of the few women in the group came with its own challenges. “Keeping up with male riders was tough,” she says. “I was slower, but when I caught up with them, whenever they said, ‘let’s go’, I would say, ‘let’s go’ — even though they had been resting for a while.” Among her cycling partners, Maske is known never to complain — even pushing herself after a fall or an accident.
Maske set her first Guinness world record in 2022, cycling from Manali to Leh, in55 hours and seven minutes. Her latest cycling milestone took her from Bhutan to India through Nepal, a journey of 1,803 km in 10 days, 18 hours and 40 minutes. As for what’s next, Maske has her eyes set on cycling from India to Singapore via Myanmar. Picking up on this persistent desire to challenge herself, she got the nickname “the extreme lady” from her daughter. Maske’s plans make it clear she’s bent on proving her daughter right.
4. What first motivated Preeti Maske’s spirit of adventure
A. Passion for cycling. B. Desire for a profession.
C. Aim for world records. D. Winning in a fun run.
5. What can we infer about Maske’s life before marriage
A She was only focused on cycling. B. She taught her children at home.
C. She was highly involved in sports. D. She had no interest in any competition.
6. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. Her difficulties and attitude. B. Her training methods.
C. Her cycling records. D. Her cycling peers.
7. Why does the author mention Maske’s plan
A. To show her pursuit of challenges. B. To tell the achieved goals in India.
C. To break more records in cycling. D. To prove her daughter’s wrong idea.

Scientists in Azerbaijan recently discovered something from a 4,000-year-old camp of herders(牧人), which reminded them of a similar discovery found in an superb ancient Egyptian tomb. What they found may be the oldest board game in history, reports Science Alert.
Scientists, Walter Crist from Leiden University in the Netherlands and Rahman Abdullayev from the Minnesota History Society, led the team that uncovered the board game. At six sites across Azerbaijan, Crist and Abdullayev found rocks with carved designs that were reminisced of the Ancient Egyptian game Hounds and Jackals (猎犬和豺狼). The board games from Azerbaijan date back to before 2000 BCE, older than those found in ancient Egypt. The discovery suggests that Hounds and Jackals may be older than historians think, and it may not have originated in Egypt after all.
Hounds and Jackals is played by moving five pieces with heads shaped like hounds and five pieces with heads shaped like jackals through 58 holes. It is a race game where players try to be the first to reach the finish line.
The discovery in Azerbaijan uncovered something else surprising. Whereas Egypt’s Hounds and Jackals, also called Fifty-Eight Holes was found in an superb tomb of a government official, Azerbaijan’s oldest game was probably used by cattle herders.
“Whatever the origin of the game of Fifty-Eight Holes, it was quickly adopted and played by a wide variety of people, from the nobility of middle kingdom of Egypt to the cattle herders of the Caucasus, and from the Old Assyrian traders in Anatolia to the workers who built Middle Kingdom pyramids (金字塔).” Crist and Abdullayev wrote in a study. Crist said that the game probably provided more than just recreation. Game playing likely helped ancient people make friends and build trust with each other, much like it does today. “The fast spread of this game proves the ability of games to act as social tools, promoting interactions across social classes.” Crist explained.
8. Why might Hounds and Jackals be the oldest board game
A. It is played by various people. B. It is older than the Egyptian version.
C. It was found in many Azerbaijan sites. D. It was discovered from a herders’ camp.
9. What does the underlined word “reminisced” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Highlighted. B. Contrasted. C. Created. D. Recalled.
10. What can we infer about the spread of the game
A. It spread slowly outside of Egypt. B. It spread mainly among the working class.
C. It only spread within Egypt and Azerbaijan. D. It spread across different social classes and regions.
11. What does the author imply in the last paragraph
A. The game was invented by herders. B. The game helped build social connections.
C. The game only served as a form of recreation. D. The game was popular with government officials.
D
Untrue information (misinformation) and outright lies (disinformation) have been around for years. But AI is making it easier, faster and cheaper to spread unreliable claims. And although some tools exist to spot or limit AI-generated untrue information, experts worry these efforts will become an arms race. AI tools will get better and better, and groups trying to stop untrue news will struggle to keep up. With a flood of more convincing untrue files cropping up across the Internet, it’s hard to know who and what to trust.
AI models have become so good at their jobs that many people won’t recognize that the created content is untrue. “AI-made content is generally better than when humans create it,” says Todd Helmus, a behavioral scientist with RAND Corporation in Washington, D. C. “Plain and simple, it looks real.”
Government leaders, AI companies and researchers met for a two-day AI Safety Summit in Bletchley, Britain, in November 2023. “It is agreed that laws can operate some limits on producing AI content. Yet there will never be a way to fully control AI, because these systems are always changing,” says Nelson at the Institute for Advanced Studies. She thinks it might be better to focus on policies that require AI to do only good and beneficial tasks. So, no lying.
“Use caution (谨慎) in where you look for information.” says Hopkins at Flinders University. “And be careful about online sources — especially social media and AI chatbots. Check out the authors and their backgrounds. See who runs and funds websites. Always see if you can confirm the “facts” somewhere else. Education is one of the best ways to avoid being taken in by AI misinformation. People have to know that we can be — and often are — targeted by misinformation.” Helmus says.
Nelson hopes that today’s kids and teens will help slow AI’s spread of untrue information. “My hope,” she says, “is that this generation will be better equipped to look at text and video images and ask the right questions.”
12. What makes it difficult to deal with AI-generated untrue news
A. Lack of testing tools. B. Ignorance of ordinary people.
C. Fast improvement of AI tools. D. Inaction of government leaders.
13. What do we know about AI-generated content
A. It often looks very realistic. B. It can be easily spotted as untrue.
C. It mainly spreads on social media. D. It is always better than what humans do.
14. What does Nelson focus on about AI
A. Limiting AI chatbots. B. Passing strict laws on AI.
C. Making AI do good tasks. D. Stopping AI from changing.
15. What is the text mainly about
A. Functions of AI models. B. Challenges of AI misinformation.
C. Advantages of AI in different fields. D. Ways of dealing with untrue information.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
During a significant conversation, it is crucial to communicate with purpose. Avoid placing blame and instead, focus on presenting solutions. ____16____
____17____ Be clear and specific in your own mind about what you want to carry out; don’t just go into the conversation with an unsure negative feeling and an intention to let it out. And when you begin to talk, don’t just complain about the problem you’ve noticed: suggest approaches, too.
In a talk, we don’t always need others to say yes. Just share your idea in a calm and clear way. Even if they seem against it at first, they may think about it later. If they get mad or feel bad about your words, it might show you’ re right. It’s the same the other way around. ____18____ Be ready to see that you may not be 100% right and be more open in the chat.
Describe the changes you’d like to make, rather than simply complaining about the problem you’ve noticed. You’ ll be saying basically the same thing. ____19____ “Our relationship is terrible these days,” contains effectively the same information as “I want it to be easier for us to spend time together.” But the latter is less likely to cause defensiveness in others.
Perhaps the most essential communication tactic is to be adaptable. When you open up a difficult conversation, be aware that it might go in unexpected directions. Be sure to take some time out from trying to make your points so that you can really hear and understand what the other person is saying, from their stand. ____20____ Catch yourself before you react defensively to anything you hear.
A. Try to identify your goals before starting.
B. Use a non-blaming communication style.
C. Here are some tips for productive conversations.
D. But you can express it in a more acceptable way.
E. Show understanding and try to take their point of view.
F. Try to explain to the other person why that might be true.
G. So don’t expect quick changes or expect them to say sorry.

In the lively campus of Greenfield Middle School, a unique friendship took root between two contrasting individuals, Lily and Kate.
Lily, a shy and diligent girl, was often found in the library’s quiet corners, her nose buried deep in textbooks. Kate, on the other hand, was a student of energy, the class’s joker, whose laughter resounded through the hallways. During a school sports event, the sun beat down mercilessly on the field. Lily, who had signed up for the long jump, stood frozen at the starting line. Her face paled as she stared at the sea of students watching. Her legs trembled, seemingly rooted to the ground.
Kate noticed Lily’s unease and came up to her, her steps light and quick. “Hey, Lily,” Kate said, giving Lily a hearty thumbs-up. “Don’t let this get to you. It’s just a leap (跳跃). You’ve got this!” Lily glanced at Kate, her eyes filled with doubt, but Kate’s words managed to motive her courage. Kate then launched into a detailed account of her own silly experiences, her hands gesturing vividly. “Remember that race when I fell over face-first It was a total disaster, but I just laughed it off. You can do the same.”
With Kate’s continuous stream of encouragement, Lily finally found the strength to take her jump. She flew through the air, not far but with a newfound sense of achievement shining in her eyes. From that moment, their friendship began.
They started spending more time together. When the school organized a group project on environmental protection, they teamed up. In the library, Lily buried herself into research materials, her head bent down in deep concentration. Kate, meanwhile, in their classroom, brainstormed creative presentation ideas, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. Their combined efforts resulted in a presentation that surprised their classmates and earned praise from the teacher.

However, like all friendships, they also faced challenges. One day, Kate arranged a lively game in the schoolyard. But Lily, buried in her studies, declined to take part in it. “I thought you cared about us having fun together,” Kate said, her voice filled with annoyance. For a few days, an awkward silence hung between them. But deep in their hearts, they knew their bond was too strong to be broken. Later, they realized that they needed to accept each other’s weaknesses and find a balance. So, they sat down and had an honest conversation, better understanding how to respect each other’s differences.
At the end of the school year, they met on the schoolyard. The sun was setting, casting a warm glow over them. Lily took a deep, steady breath and said, “Kate, this year we’ve had our rough times, but I’m truly grateful we’re still friends.” A bright smile spread across Kate’s face. “You bet, Lily. We’re like two odd pieces that somehow fit perfectly.” With bright and true smiles on their faces, they walked out of the schoolyard, confident that their friendship would be a source of strength to help them face whatever the future held.
