You be the judge: should my phone-addicted friend go on a mobile detox (戒断)
The prosecution (控方): James
My housemate and best friend spends every waking minute on TikTok. I know she works in social media, but she’s now seriously addicted to it, even after she’s clocked off. Besides, she needs to stop playing videos loudly around the house when I’m watching TV.
The defence: Marley
My job means I have to be on the ball with what’s trending online. I think James is jealous because he’s got a rather boring job in accounting. I don’t go around playing videos at full volume all the time; I think that’s only happened a handful of times. He’s exaggerating (夸张) there.
The jury (陪审团) of Guardian readers
While Marley’s use of TikTok may seem excessive to some, ultimately it is up to her how she chooses to use her time. If James can’t accept that, he should move out.
Margo, 29
Marley needs to put her phone down, live in the moment and think less about her social media presence. She is guilty of not valuing an honest friend because she thinks a better life awaits her on TikTok.
Stewart, 35
As a fellow phone addict, I do have sympathy for Marley. However, it’s more than a little rude to have the sound turned on while watching TV together.
Peter, 40
The excessive use of social media is a crime and reflects poor control over social habits. Marley needs to be more considerate of others.
Steve, 6
Now you be the-judge
In our reader feedback section, tell us: should Marley get off TikTok and get a life

Han Kang, the South Korean author best known for her extraordinary novel, “The Vegetarian,” was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday - the first writer from her country to receive the award.
Mats Malm, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, which organizes the prize, said at a news conference in Stockholm that Han was receiving the honor “for her intense poetic writing that bravely discusses historical events and exposes the fragility of human life.”
Han, 53, was born in 1970 in Gwangju, South Korea. Her father was also a novelist, but much less successful. The family struggled financially and moved frequently. In a 2016 interview with The Times, Han said her childhood experience “was too much for a little child, but I was all right because I was surrounded by books.”
When Han was 9, her family moved to Seoul just months before the Gwangju uprising (起义), when government army fired on crowds of protesters, killing hundreds.
The event shaped her views on humanity’s capacity for violence, Han said in the 2016 interview. She also recalled seeing images of people who lined up to donate their blood to those who were injured in the uprising.
“It was like two unsolvable riddles imprinted on my mind: How can humans be so violent, and how can humans be so noble ” she said. “When I write novels, I find myself always returning to the theme of what it means to be human.”
Han studied literature at Yonsei University in Korea, and her first published works were poems. Her first novel, “Black Deer,” which came out in 1998, was a mystery about a missing woman. In the 2016 interview, Han said it was around that time that she developed the idea for a short story about a woman who becomes a plant, which she eventually developed into “The Vegetarian.”

B.To show its influence on Han’s writing.
C.To reveal the cruelty of politics.
D.To stress its impact on Korean people’s life.
7.What is “The Vegetarian” mainly about
A.A deer. B.A woman.
C.A plant. D.A vegetable.

Are you an “I person” or an “E person” These two personality labels in particular are widely discussed online. They are part of a popular personality test called the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI. All of the results have four letters, and there are 16 results in total, “I” and “E” refer to “introverted” and “extroverted”, respectively.
Even if someone is typically quiet, many online discussions suggest that an “I person” can still act outgoing at times. For example, when an introverted person is with a group of introverted friends, they might become more social like an “E person”. According to psychologists, this idea of temporarily switching personalities is called “masking”. That is hiding your true personality in specific situations.
“Human beings want to feel they belong, and they might become people-pleasers to do so,” wrote the MasterClass website.
Thinking on this, I may actually be the kind of person that these people are discussing. Most times, I just wish to make the atmosphere more interesting and exciting and show people that I’m easy to get along with. But deep down, I mostly enjoy being alone and quiet.
Using the MBTI result to identify and describe someone’s personality seems fun. However, I went too far at one time. My sister was excitedly making a day-to-day travel plan when I remembered from an article that “P people” don’t like to make or stick to plans, so I said to her, “You don’t seem like a ‘P person’ ” “Why ” she asked back, “Since when do I need to follow what my personality test tells me to do ” It was then that I realized I’d taken the result too seriously.
The MBTI personality test may show something you don’t know about yourself and can even be a fun ice-breaker question when meeting new friends. And that’s all it is-for fun. Knowing someone’s MBTI result doesn’t mean you really know this person. And those four letters of yours don’t define who you are.
8.What do we know about an “I person”
A.An “I person” may feel lonely.
B.An “I person” can be outgoing.
C.An “I person” is always selfish.
D.An “I person” is popular online.
9.What does the underlined word “masking” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Covering. B.Avoiding.
C.Showing. D.Criticizing.
10.What can we infer about the author’s sister from the text
A.She didn’t like the “P person”.
B.She didn’t like making plans.
C.She didn’t take MBTI seriously.
D.She didn’t take the personality test.
11.What does the author think of the personality test
A.It’s just for fun.
B.It defines who you are.
C.It helps match good friends.
D.It can shape your personality

The Malagasy baobab trees, a typical feature of Madagascar’s landscape, should have disappeared long ago due to the extinction of its former seed-distributing animals. However, it did not. Seheno Andriantsaralaza at the University of Antananarivo in Madagascar and Onja Razafindratsima at the University of California, Berkeley, now think they may know the reason.
Together with their colleagues, the scientists monitored 15 trees to find new baobab seed-distributing animals in a western Madagascar region. They also set up camera traps around seed-containing fruits, and searched any feces (粪便) along the way for the presence of seeds.
They report in the journal Biotropica that a native rat was caught on camera handling whole fruits on four occasions. Although there was no record of the rat breaking the fruits open, the team found 13 fruits that had been chewed into and had their seeds removed. Though the bite marks were not clear enough to identify a culprit (肇事者), this was clear evidence that a seed-distributing animal was out there. They then found convincing evidence: baobab seeds in seven different piles of bush-pig faces.
The discovery is not without irony (讽刺). Scientists believe bush pigs were brought to Madagascar by humans sometime between 1,000 and 5,000 years ago, just as the former seed-distributing animals were going extinct. Their arrival was a lucky break for the baobabs, especially as scientists have determined a seed’s journey through the pig-like digestive system doesn’t reduce its ability to grow.
While the finding is important in its own right, it also provides valuable evidence that introduced species may not be entirely harmful. Madagascar’s pigs, for example, though not native, have made themselves essential to the survival of truly native species. Similar relationships are suspected to hold in South America between rabbits native to Europe and plants with no seed distributors. For Dr. Andriantsaralaza, that suggests the full ecological role of introduced species should be considered before talk of extinction begins.
12.What is the study aimed at
A.Monitoring endangered baobab trees.
B.Discovering why baobab trees still exist.
C.Preserving the landscape of Madagascar.
D.Investigating how animals distribute seeds.
13.What led the scientists to identify the real culprit
A.The clear bite marks on the fruits.
B.The number of fruits broken open.
C.Where the removed baobab seeds lay.
D.How a native rat handled whole fruits.
14.What is the writer’s attitude towards introduced species
A.Dismissive. B.Conventional.
C.Enthusiastic. D.Fair.
15.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Species Savers: Malagasy Bush Pigs.
B.Seed Distributors: Malagasy Baobabs.
C.Ecological Role of Seed-containing Fruits.
D.Disappearance of Seed-distributing Animals.

How to Overcome the Harmful Habit of Judging
You’ve done it. I’ve done it. We all do it — we all sometimes pass judgment on others when their behavior doesn’t meet our standards. Clothing choices, how people spend their free time, job skills— the list of possible things to judge is endless.
16 While you may not consciously label them as such, you are familiar with nonverbals that convey judgment: pursed lips, raised eyebrows, crossed arms, tipping head to literally look down upon another.
We judge others to protect our own self-images. But that protection comes at a price. 17 And with it comes defensiveness, prejudice, and hostility(敌意). Judgment is just a dressed-up version of shame. We put the shame on to someone else so that we don’t have to feel our own.
To overcome judgment, you should shore up your self-worth. If you are grounded in confidence and value yourself, you are less likely to be judgmental. Remind yourself when you feel judged by others, it’s a reflection of their own battle with shame, not who or what you are. Yes, you make mistakes and sometimes behave badly. 18 You grow, learn, and improve. You accomplish and achieve and win. You are valuable and worthy even when you fall short.
When you accept your flaws(缺陷) and mistakes and still see yourself as a worthwhile human being in spite of them, you can in turn accept other flawed human beings, too. 19
Judging others creates a false sense of self-worth. If you find yourself doing it, stop. 20 But do take a look in the mirror. Where do you need shoring up It takes some thoughtfulness and work, but you’ll have better relationships, improved trust, more creativity, and greater influence when you stop judging others and start valuing yourself.
A.Don’t beat yourself up for it.
B.Shame hits you from many angles.
C.But you are more than your mistakes.
D.You’ve been on the receiving end, too.
E.Judgment costs creativity, curiosity, and trust.
F.At the core is the feeling of not being good enough.
G.The more you like and accept yourself, the less you have to put others down.

Susan had a secret: she loved robots. She had helped her dad in his workshop and knew a lot about motors, but her friends didn’t know this.
One day, she heard Alex and Jacob talking about their robot, Robbie. They were preparing for a big competition but Robbie wasn’t working properly. Susan was surprised by their courage, as they always seemed unpopular among the boys. She felt bad for them and wanted to help.
On the school bus home, Susan sat behind Alex and Jacob, who were still trying to fix their robot. “This is impossible! The legs move before you press the switch and stop after you press the switch!” Alex said, looking at Robbie’s legs, which were not moving right. “The competition is only eight days away!” Jacob looked sad. He thought they were going to lose.
“Umm, how did you connect the wires from the switch ” Susan asked quietly over their shoulders. Alex turned and gave her a cautious look. Susan smiled and asked, “Did you connect the NO wire or the NC wire to the motor ” The boys stared at her as if she had just landed from Mars.
Susan gently took the robot and pointed out the wire connected to the motor. “Here’s the problem!” She explained that it was the NC wire. It means the circuit (电路) is Normally Closed. She then pulled a loose wire out of the robot and explained that it was the NO wire, which means Normally Open. “If you connect this wire instead, Robbie will walk when you press the switch.” Susan handed the robot back to Alex, who was staring at her with his mouth open.
“Change the wires and see,” she said before getting off the bus. Ten minutes later, her phone rang. It was Jacob: “Your idea worked, and we’re wondering if you could come over and help improve our Robbie.” Susan smiled. She knew she had made the right choice.

根据文章第二段中“Mats Malm, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, which organizes the prize, said at a news conference in Stockholm that Han was receiving the honor “for her intense poetic writing that bravely discusses historical events and exposes the fragility of human life.” (组织该奖项的瑞典文学院常任秘书马茨·马尔姆在斯德哥尔摩的新闻发布会上说,韩江获奖“是因为她激烈的诗歌写作,勇敢地讨论历史事件,暴露了人类生活的脆弱”。)”和倒数第二段中“When I write novels, I find myself always returning to the theme of what it means to be human. (当我写小说时,我发现自己总是回到作为人类意味着什么的主题上。)”可知,韩江的小说主题聚焦于人性。故选C。
5.推理判断题。根据文章第三段中“In a 2016 interview with The Times, Han said her childhood experience “was too much for a little child, but I was all right because I was surrounded by books.” (在2016年接受《纽约时报》采访时,韩女士表示,她的童年经历“对一个小孩子来说太多了,但我还好,因为我被书包围了。”)”可知,书籍成为了她童年时期的慰藉。故选D。
6.推理判断题。根据文章倒数第三段“The event shaped her views on humanity’s capacity for violence, Han said in the 2016 interview. She also recalled seeing images of people who lined up to donate their blood to those who were injured in the uprising. (她在2016年的采访中说,这件事塑造了她对人类暴力能力的看法。她还回忆起看到人们排队为在起义中受伤的人献血的画面。)”可知,提到光州起义是为了展示这一事件对韩江写作的影响。故选B。
7.细节理解题。根据文章最后一段中“In the 2016 interview, Han said it was around that time that she developed the idea for a short story about a woman who becomes a plant, which she eventually developed into “The Vegetarian.” (在2016年的采访中,韩江说,大约在那个时候,她萌生了写一个关于一个女人变成一株植物的短篇故事的想法,她最终把这个故事写成了《素食者》。)”可知,《素食者》主要是关于一个变成植物的女人的故事。故选B。
8.B 9.A 10.C 11.A
根据第二段中的“Even if someone is typically quiet, many online discussions suggest that an “I person” can still act outgoing at times. For example, when an introverted person is with a group of introverted friends, they might become more social like an “E person”. (即使某人是典型的沉默寡言,许多在线讨论表明,一个“I型人”有时仍然可以表现得外向。例如,当一个内向的人和一群内向的朋友在一起时,他们可能会变得更像一个“E型人”。)”可知,即使沉默寡言的人,有时候仍然表现得外向,当一个内向的人与一群内向的朋友在一起时,可能会变得更像一个外向的人,由此可知,一个“I型人”也有可能是外向的。故选B项。
9.词义猜测题。根据划线单词后的“That is hiding your true personality in specific situations.(这是在特定情况下隐藏你的真实个性。)” 故选A项。
根据倒数第二段中的“My sister was excitedly making a day-to-day travel plan when I remembered from an article that “P people” don’t like to make or stick to plans, so I said to her, “You don’t seem like a ‘P person’ ” “Why ” she asked back, “Since when do I need to follow what my personality test tells me to do ” It was then that I realized I’d taken the result too seriously.(我妹妹正在兴奋地制定每天的旅行计划,这时我想起了一篇文章,“P型人”不喜欢制定或坚持计划,所以我对她说:“你看起来不像一个“P型人” ”“为什么 她反问:“从什么时候开始,我需要按照我的性格测试告诉我的去做 ”那时我才意识到我把结果看得太认真了。)”可知,作者看着妹妹兴奋地制定每天旅行计划时想到了“P型人”不喜欢制定计划,所以觉得妹妹的行为与她的测试的人格类型不相符,而作者妹妹却反问作者“什么时候我需要按照性格测试告诉的去做事情”,由此可推断,作者的妹妹并没有对性格测试的结果当回事。故选C项。
11.推理判断题。根据尾段中的“The MBTI personality test may show something you don’t know about yourself and can even be a fun ice-breaker question when meeting new friends. And that’s all it is-for fun. And that’s all it is-for fun. Knowing someone’s MBTI result doesn’t mean you really know this person. (MBTI人格测试可能会显示出你对自己不了解的一些东西,甚至可以成为你结识新朋友时一个有趣的破冰问题。这就是一切——为了好玩。知道某人的MBTI测试结果并不意味着你真的了解这个人。)”可知,MBTI人格测试对于解释新朋友有时是一个有趣的破冰问题,但是这只是为了好玩,而不能真的意味着你会了解这个人,由此可知,作者认为人格测试只是为了好玩。故选A项。
12.B 13.C 14.D 15.A
根据第一段“The Malagasy baobab trees, a typical feature of Madagascar’s landscape, should have disappeared long ago due to the extinction of its former seed-distributing animals. However, it did not. Seheno Andriantsaralaza at the University of Antananarivo in Madagascar and Onja Razafindratsima at the University of California, Berkeley, now think they may know the reason.(马达加斯加猴面包树是马达加斯加的典型景观,由于以前传播种子的动物灭绝,它早就应该消失了。然而,事实并非如此。马达加斯加塔那那利佛大学的Seheno Andriantsaralaza和加州大学伯克利分校的Onja Razafindratsima现在认为他们可能知道原因)”可知,这项研究的目的是发现猴面包树仍然存在的原因。故选B。
13.细节理解题。根据第三段“Though the bite marks were not clear enough to identify a culprit (肇事者), this was clear evidence that a seed-distributing animal was out there. They then found convincing evidence: baobab seeds in seven different piles of bush-pig faces.(虽然咬痕不够清晰,无法确定是谁干的,但这是一个明确的证据,表明那里有一种传播种子的动物。然后,他们发现了令人信服的证据:在七堆不同的灌木猪脸上发现了猴面包树种子)”可知,取出的猴面包树种子埋在哪里让科学家们确定了真正的罪魁祸首。故选C。
14.推理判断题。根据最后一段“While the finding is important in its own right, it also provides valuable evidence that introduced species may not be entirely harmful.(虽然这一发现本身很重要,但它也提供了有价值的证据,证明引入的物种可能并不完全有害)”可知,作者认为引进物种合理。故选D。
根据倒数第二段“Scientists believe bush pigs were brought to Madagascar by humans sometime between 1,000 and 5,000 years ago, just as the former seed-distributing animals were going extinct. Their arrival was a lucky break for the baobabs, especially as scientists have determined a seed’s journey through the pig-like digestive system doesn’t reduce its ability to grow.(科学家们认为,在1000到5000年前的某个时候,人类将丛林猪带到马达加斯加,当时这种传播种子的动物正濒临灭绝。它们的到来对猴面包树来说是一个幸运的突破,尤其是科学家们已经确定,一颗种子通过猪一样的消化系统并不会降低它的生长能力)”结合文章主要说明了科学家发现马达加斯加丛林猪虽然是入侵物种,但是间接保护了猴面包树,解释了研究开展的经过和发现。可知,A选项“物种保护者:马达加斯加丛林猪”最符合文章标题。故选A。

16.下文“ While you may not consciously label them as such, you are familiar with nonverbals that convey judgment: pursed lips, raised eyebrows, crossed arms, tipping head to literally look down upon another. (虽然你可能不会有意识地给他们贴上这样的标签,但你熟悉传达判断的非言语行为:噘起嘴唇、扬起眉毛、交叉双臂、低头俯视他人)”说明虽然你可能不会有意识地给他们贴上这样的标签,但是自己已经被贴上标签了。说明空格处表示的意思是“自己成为了评判的接收者”,因此D项“你也一直处于接收端”概括段意,故选D。
17.上文“But that protection comes at a price. (但这种保护是有代价的)”说明下文要表明的是“代价”的内容,其中,选项E中的“costs”和上文中“comes at a price”的是同义词,因此E项“判断需要创造力、好奇心和信任”符合语境,故选E。

Dear classmates,
It’s an honor to be here and share with you the trend among a few students to film short videos on smartphones on campus. To my mind, this practice is actually quite detrimental.
Firstly, it has a negative effect on those who film videos themselves. As high school students with limited time, filming short videos wastes valuable minutes and negatively impacts memory, essential for learning. Secondly, it also disrupts the concentration of the fellow students. When someone is filming a video, it often draws the attention of others around them, which is not conducive to a positive learning environment.
To address this issue, firstly, we could organize a class meeting where we discuss the potential harms of short videos, thus raising awareness among our peers. Secondly, I also recommend handing phones over to the teachers or parents for safekeeping while we’re at school.
I hope we all can put our phones away, develop good self-discipline, and fully engage in our school life.
Thank you!

Susan felt proud and happy, knowing that her secret love for robots had helped her friends achieve their dreams.
