Retired (退役的) superstar Ash Barty will be reuniting with the grass courts at Wimbledon for the first time since her success in 2021 after agreeing to take part in an invitational doubles match. It will be the first time the three-time grand slam (大满贯) champion has taken to the courts since announcing (宣布) her shock retirement in March 2022.
Barty, who has been married and become a mother since her retirement, will play in the match on July 9. The event will include women’s doubles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles. Wimbledon officials made the announcement on social media, saying they were pleased to have the 28-year-old back.
Since her retirement, Barty has been unwilling to play the game competitively and has repeatedly said that despite retiring at such a young age, she had no intention of a full-time return.
In 2021, Barty ended Australia’s 41-year drought at Wimbledon, becoming the first player since Evened Goolegong Cowley to win first place in the Women’s Singles Round. Barty had woo the French Open in 2019 the first Australian woman in 46 years to do so before winning the Australian Open in2022 and appointing her retirement two months later. Since her retirement, Australian female presence at chagrined slams has been minimal though Aula Tomljanovic, who has won her way through to the quarter-finals at the grass court event in Birmingham in the UK, should be able to enter the competition, with a host of others set to enter qualifying.
“I miss seeing the girls that I’ve built such a relationship with over so many years,” said Barty. She was pleased to accept the invitation to play a doubles match. “The invitational match is exciting. It gets so many of the good ex-players back together to go out and enjoy the grass,” she added.
Barty’s retirement has left something of a hole in Australian women’s tennis with only Daria Saville remaining inside the top 100.
4. When did Barty announce her retirement from tennis
A. In 2023. B. In 2022. C. In 2021. D. In 2019.
5. What has Barty been focusing on since her retirement
A. An easy game. B. A part-time job. C. Social media. D. Family life.
6. Why did Barty decide to return to Wimbledon
A. To meet with her tennis friends. B. To win the highest honor in tennis.
C. To fight for her mother country. D. To live up to her fans’ expectation.
7. How does the author feel about Barty’s retirement
A. Hopeful. B. Satisfied. C. Proud. D. Regretful.

For the first time, an orangutan (红毛猩猩) has been seen doctoring a wound. Scientists describe it as the first report of a wild animal caring for a wound using a natural plant that’s known to help treatment. Researchers shared their discovery in Scientific Reports.
The team have been studying orangutans in Indonesia’s Gunning Leaser National Park since 1994. Some 150 orangutans live in the Shaq Blaming research area.
In June 2022, Isabelle Laumer, a biologist on the research team, was watching a male Sumatran orangutan named Rakus. The animal was chewing (咀嚼) the leaves of the plant, or liana. He then spread the liana paste (糊状物) onto a facial wound that was several days old. He likely got it in a fight with another male. Rakus applied the paste several times to the wound.
It turns out that local people use the same plant in traditional medicine. It’s known to slow or limit the growth of bacteria.
Laumer got very excited about the finding. She pointed out, “This animal only treated his wound and not any other body part. And this was done repeatedly.” That wound closed within five days of being treated. The orangutan’s focused effort made Laumer believe that Rakus’s use of the liana paste to treat his wound had been deliberate.
“There are a lot of published reports about animals applying things to areas that hurt,” said zoologist Michael Huffman, who has studied animal self-medication for years. “But this, I think, is the first published paper,” he added, “with details of both the plant and the progress of the treatment.”
Laumer hoped her team’s finding would make people care more about protecting orangutans. The animal’s human likeness doesn’t stop with their unkind look. Yet all three species of orangutans are in danger. “It would be so sad,” she said, “if they didn’t exist on the planet.”
8. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. What Laumer observed in the wild. B. Where the orangutan found its food.
C. Possible ways to get wild medicine. D. The fight between two orangutans.
9. Which of the following best explains “deliberate” underlined in paragraph 5
A. In our way. B. Out of mind.
C. Seen by accident. D. Done on purpose.
10. What did Laumer expect of the finding
A. It would bring lots of honors to the team. B. It would remind us about climate change.
C. It would push people to save orangutans. D. It would draw attention to cute wildlife.
11. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Scientists Knew Orangutans’ Daytime Habits
B. There Is a Huge Market for Traditional Medicine
C. An Orangutan Treated His Wound with a Local Plant
D. Some Animals Have Learnt How to Help Each Other

US cars have had stamped metal license plates (车牌) for around 125 years. Now that may be changing. California is testing a new, digital license plate.
The Rplate is a digital license plate made by the company Reviver Auto. The plate has an e-ink screen, like an electronic book reader. Unlike a regular screen, e-ink can show an image even without electricity. Reviver Auto worked with the company that makes GoPro cameras to make sure the license plate would be tough and waterproof (防水的).
The Rplate connects to the Internet like a cell phone does. The license plate’s e-ink screen makes it easy to change what the screen shows. This means that owners can update (更新) their plates over the Internet instead of having to wait in lines at government offices.
Neville Boston, who leads Reviver Auto, thinks that at first the digital license plate will be mainly for companies or groups that have a lot of cars. The Rplate can be tracked, which means the companies will always know where their cars are. If a car is stolen, the police will be able to find the license plate.
The state of California is trying to find out if digital license plates are a good idea. They will run a test. Up to 175,000 cars will be able to try the new plates. But it won’t be cheap. Reviver Auto sells their license plates for $699, and users must pay $7 a month to keep the service.
Some people are worried about privacy because the Rplates can be tracked. The company’s website says that owners can turn off the tracking if they want. That won’t make a difference for someone driving another person’s car, though. The city of Sacramento is starting its own test with 24 digital license plates. Reviver Auto will have to talk with the car owners to make sure they don’t feel like they are being tracked.
12. What can we learn about the license plates in the US
A. They are all digital ones. B. They are stamped in metal.
C. They are made by Reviver Auto. D. They are easy to become broken.
13. What is an advantage of the Rplate
A. It can be controlled online. B. It can record the condition of a car.
C. It can act as a book reader. D. It can be gotten at government offices.
14. What might make it difficult for private car owners to accept the Rplate
A. The field test. B. Its small market.
C. Its high price. D. The repair work.
15. Why does the author mention the test run in Sacramento
A. To explain steps to avoid being tracked.
B. To show users’ worry about the new plate.
C. To stress the importance of safety measures.
D. To encourage customers to make suggestions.

Sophie Miller had never thought much about the old building on Elm Street. For years, she had simply walked past it on her way home, never giving it a second thought.
Earlier that day, Sophie received an email from an unfamiliar address. It read, “We have a position that matches perfectly with your skills. Please come by our office for an interview. Details below.”
The address pointed to the old building on Elm Street. Despite her doubts, Sophie was interested in it. She had been job-hunting for months, and though she had attended several interviews, none of them was a perfect fit. So she decided to give it a try.
As Sophie walked to the building, she was greeted (迎接) by the sound of raindrops. The street was rather quiet, and she couldn’t help but feel nervous. Taking a deep breath, she pushed open the door and stepped inside.
The interior (内部) of the building was surprisingly modern and well-lit. A middle-aged woman with a warm smile greeted Sophie and asked her to take a seat in the waiting area. “Mr. Thompson will be with you shortly,” she said.
Looking around, Sophie noticed a few other interviewees waiting. The minutes passed by slowly until, finally, a tall man appeared and called her name.
“Ms. Miller, I’m David Thompson. It’s a pleasure to meet you,” he said. “Please have a seat.” Mr. Thompson pointed to a chair across from his desk. He sat in his own chair and looked at Sophie with a thoughtful expression. “I’ll get straight to the point. We’ve reviewed your resume (简历), and your experience is impressive. However, this isn’t a typical interview,” he said.
Sophie raised her eyes, “What do you mean ”
“Our company is looking for someone who can address unexpected challenges. Your resume suggests you have good problem-solving skills. I want to test those skills,” Mr. Thompson said and he pulled out a piece of paper and a box.

【答案】“Follow the instructions to open the box in 30 minutes.” Mr. Thompson explained. Sophie’s heart raced as she nodded and looked at the box. It had a complex design with different parts. Reading the instructions, Sophie decided to try as hard as she could. She started to plan, remembering her past experiences solving similar problems. As time ticked down, Sophie thought through possible ways. She carefully moved the box. Each step tested her creativity and problem solving skills. Just as the final minute came, she managed to open the box.
“Well done!” Mr. Thompson walked up to Sapphire. “You’ve impressed us with your problem solving skills. We’d like to offer you the position.” Sophie was surprised but excited. She had never expected such an unusual interview, but it allowed her to show her abilities in a different way. As she accepted the offer, she realized that sometimes, the most unexpected chance could lead to the most satisfying result. As she left the building, the rain had stopped, and the sky was clearing. Sophie looked back at the old building with excitement for the future.
