I teach at a university three times a week. Last Monday, at the beginning of class, a young man asked me why I always seemed to be so happy.
His question reminded me of something I’d read somewhere before. “Every morning when you get up, you have a choice about how you want to live your life that day,” I said, “and I always choose to be happy.”
“Let me give you an example,” I continued. “Besides teaching here, I also teach out at another college in Edinburgh, 17 miles down the highway from where I live. One day a few weeks ago, I drove those 17 miles to Edinburgh. I drove off the highway and turned on to College Drive. I only had to drive another quarter mile down the road to the college. But just then my car died, I tried to start it again, but it didn’t work. So I put my car lights on, took my books, and walked down the road to the college.”
“As soon as I got there, I called and arranged for a tow truck to carry my parked car after class. A teacher in the office asked me what had happened.”
“This is my lucky day,” I replied. smiling.
“Your car broke down and today is your lucky day ” She was puzzled, “What do you mean ”
“I live 17 miles from here,” I replied. “My car could have broken down anywhere along the highway. It didn’t. Instead, it broke down at the perfect place: off the highway, within walking distance of here. I’m still able to teach my class and get the tow truck to meet me after class. If my car was meant to break down today, it couldn’t have been arranged in a more convenient fashion.”

Is it hard for us to get up when it’s cold The answer is probably yes. But life is quite different for some animals at this time. They hibernate (冬眠) for a long time when it’s cold or there is no more food to eat. Let’s learn some interesting things about them.
Snails work hard to get ready for hibernation. They stay in their shells when hibernating. The corner of walls or some other places like tree trunks are good choices for them. They don’t eat anything during hibernation. When it is very cold, snails can hibernate for several months.
What about bats Some hibernate for weeks and some for months. While hibernating, they don’t need to eat. but they need to drink water Some hats can get moisture around them using special parts of their bodies. Others might make their waste (粪便) more concentrated to lose less water.
When turtles hibernate, they choose places like mud (泥浆) at the bottom of rivers or lakes. These places are cool, so they can stay alive even if it’s very cold outside. And staying in the mud can keep them safe from other animals.
★ They start moving around again, looking for food and friends It’s amazing how they can just pause their lives for so long and then pick up right where they left off!
