A clear-blue-eyed 19-year-old boy, Ben Alexander wanders along a narrow path. He climbs into a chicken house he recently built and smiles while climbing up a swinging bridge to a consulting room in a treehouse. This is treatment.
Alexander is the first patient at the newly opened NewSTART, a video game and internet addiction recovery program. It’s hard to imagine that Alexander is now merrily giving a tour of the forest facility. In the past, he was addicted to a computer game for more than 16 hours a day, but he says, “It was pretty much all I was doing when I was in college.”
Nearly a year ago, Alexander got so addicted to an online game that he would skip meals and give up sleep. He tried several times to quit the game but failed. On the edge of dropping out of school, Alexander turned to his dad for help. His parents checked him into an addiction treatment center immediately so that he could join the program.
The program, run by Sophia and Albert, is located in Sophia’s house. Her husband and son also live there. There’s room for six patients, but during Alexander’s treatment, the others were on the way. He is given a regular schedule, with outdoor activities such as caring for chickens and goats. These activities are organized throughout the day, plus housework and meals. Sophia says the program is designed to help people learn to deal with being bored after returning home.
Some psychologists hold the idea that pathological (病态的) game-playing or internet surfing is not really an addiction, but a sign of a deeper issue, such as depression or anxiety. But Albert believes the virtual world can be no less addicting than other addictions, such as smoking.
24. What is the main purpose of the NewSTART program
A. To provide suggestions on video games.
B. To organize interesting outdoor activities.
C. To teach teenagers how to build a treehouse.
D. To solve game and internet addiction problems.
25. How did Alexander’s parents react when he turned to them for help
A. They seriously criticized him. B. They completely ignored it.
C. They helped seek treatment. D. They advised quitting school.
26. Which of the following is true about Alexander during his treatment
A. He was the only patient there.
B. He had other serious abuse problems.
C. He felt unhappy in the treatment center.
D. He wasn’t aware how serious his addiction was.
27. What does Albert believe about internet and video game addiction
A. It’s not a real addiction. B. It’s as addicting as smoking.
C. It’s a sign of depression. D. It’s less serious than anxiety.

Rancho Los Cerritos, a historic site and museum in Long Beach, illustrates the local history of Spanish, Mexican, and European cultures. In 2022, a special project, an advanced stormwater recycling system, was started there. This system collects, stores and reuses rainwater on site, helping to save water and showing how to deal with droughts and changing weather patterns.
The project also includes a public education program called “Looking Back to Advance Forward.” It’s a mix of new technology and nature-based solutions that the Tongva people, native to the area, developed over 5,000 years ago. With this innovative hybrid system, the Rancho will collect and reuse almost 100% of the rainwater, reducing water use and keeping pollutants out of the wetlands, the Los Angeles River, and the ocean.
Why is this stormwater management system a big deal It’s the first of its kind in the U. S. at a historic site like this. It uses special bricks that let water pass through. These bricks are at the top of the site and the water flows down into an underground tank that holds 22,000 gallons. The water in the tank is then filtered (过滤) and treated before being used to water the historic gardens.
The site is on a hill, which allows people to use gravity to channel rainwater into a natural dry streambed at the lowest point of the property. The water in the dry stream is treated using biofiltration, which means using plants to help keep the water clean and balanced.
Simply speaking, Rancho Los Cerritos’ stormwater system is like a big, smart sponge (海绵) that absorbs rainwater, cleans it, and then uses it to keep the gardens green. It’s away of respecting the past and the environment while preparing for the future.
28. Why did Rancho Los Cerrito start a special project
A. To tackle the dry weather. B. To create a tourist attraction.
C. To illustrate the local history. D. To reduce the annual rainfall.
29. What can we learn about the stormwater system from Para.2&3
A. It can collect and reuse all the rainfall.
B. It was developed over 5,000 years ago.
C. It’s the first to be used in a U. S. historic site.
D. It’s the largest system built in American history.
30. How does the stormwater system work
A. It pumps water from a river.
B. It treats water with chemicals.
C. Special bricks allow water to flow through.
D. Water flows directly to the historic gardens.
31. What is the passage mainly about
A. The history of Rancho Los Cerritos.
B. A water protection project in California.
C. An innovative stormwater system at a historic site.
D. A traditional stormwater recycle system in Rancho.
D
The concept of a day, defined by Earth’s rotation (自转), has been the basis for timekeeping since ancient times. However, the speed of Earth’s rotation is not always the same. It slows down due to the drag of tides, leading to the addition of “leap seconds” (闰秒) to atomic time (原子时间) to maintain synchronization, keeping atomic time matchingthe Earth’s rotation. In this way, our clocks match how long it takes for the Earth to make one full turn. Since 1972, we have added leap seconds 27 times. Yet, recent changes in Earth’s rotation have brought about a debate on whether we should continue this practice.
In the past, Earth’s rotation was slowing, but since the 1990s, it has been speeding up, potentially requiring the removal of a leap second. This complete change has led to questions about the necessity of leap seconds, as they cause interruptions in computer and telecom operations. For instance, the addition of a leap second in 2012 caused Reddit to crash and some airline companies to experience flight delays.
The debate raises the question: does it matter if there’s a noticeable difference between Earth’s rotational day and atomic time In a digitized world, the exact length of the day might seem less important. However, some argue that maintaining the traditional day is important for various reasons, including scientific and cultural significance.
The decision to continue or abandon leap seconds is complex. Some propose waiting a century before making a significant adjustment. But others suggest stopping leap-second adjustments by 2035, as voted by the General Conference on Weights and Measures in 2022. This would mean less frequent adjustments, allowing for better preparation.
Ultimately, the decision on leap seconds reflects our relationship with time and the importance we place on consistency. As physicist Elizabeth says, “Time is the most important unit in the international system of units; a lot of other standards depend on it.” Whether we choose to keep leap seconds or adopt a new system, the goal is to ensure the reliability and stability of timekeeping in our increasingly interconnected world.
32. What is the most likely meaning of “synchronization” in Para.1
A. Separating from others. B. Keeping the same pace.
C. Predicting time patterns. D. Making something confusing.
33. Why are Reddit and some airline companies mentioned in Para.2
A. They were trapped in computer interruptions.
B. They prove the big change on Earth’s rotation.
C. They suffered great damages from flight delays.
D. They are examples of the impact by a leap second.
34. What is the purpose of adjusting leap seconds
A. To slow down Earth’s rotation.
B. To prevent great chaos in the world.
C. To protect other standards relying on time.
D. To keep time measuring dependable and consistent.
35. What may be the author’s opinion on adjusting leap seconds
A. Favourable. B. Neutral. C. Subjective. D. Indifferent.

The Silent Signal
In a quiet little town in England, there lived an elderly man named Harold. Uneducated and widowed (鳏夫), Harold’s heart was heavy with loneliness. His children, Emily, a doctor in London, and Thomas, a lawyer in Manchester, had moved to the busy cities, leaving him in the family home with only his old mobile phone for company. The phone was a lifeline to his children, and he treasured every ring.
One day, Harold decided to visit a local mobile phone repair shop, TechSolutions, with a sense of urgency. His phone, an outdated one, had been silent for weeks. No calls, no messages— just a terrible quiet that seemed to mirror his life.
Harold entered the shop, with his pace slow and tired. He approached the counter and handed his phone to the young repairman, a cheerful man named Liam. “There’s something wrong with it,” Harold insisted, his voice trembling slightly. “It’s not ringing, and I’m sure my children, Emily and Thomas, want to speak to me.”
Liam, with a warm smile, took the phone and began to inspect it. Harold watched and held his breath as Liam pressed buttons and shook his head, saying technical terms under his breath. After a few minutes, Liam looked up and announced, “Everything seems to be in order, Mr. Harold. Your phone is functioning perfectly.” The news did not bring relief to Harold’s wrinkled forehead. If anything, his worry lines deepened. “But if it’s working, why haven’t I received any calls ” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Liam, sensing the depth of Harold’s despair, decided to dig deeper. To his surprise, he discovered that Harold’s phone was indeed receiving calls, but the ringer was turned off, and the phone was set to silent mode. Liam showed Harold how to adjust the settings, ensuring the ringer was on and the volume was up.

Salon: Smart Living and Interpersonal Communication
Last Friday witnessed a fascinating salon held by our school in the Lecture Hall, whose theme was“Smart Living and Interpersonal Communication”.
The event started with a lecture by a guest speaker on how technology impacts our social lives, from communication apps to virtual reality devices. We then discussed the pros and cons of social media, the significance of face-to-face interactions, and how technology can help us connect better. A highlight was the hands-on session where we experienced what it’s like to interact in a fully digital world.
In conclusion, the salon was a resounding success, leaving us with a deeper appreciation for the role of technology in our lives. Let’s continue this dialogue and apply what we’ve learned to enrich our daily interactions.

One possible version:
He also checked Harolds voicemail, finding several unheard messages. As he played them back, Harold’s face lit up with a mix of surprise and emotion. He heard his children’s voices, filled with concern and love, checking in on him. Each message was like a ray of sunshine breaking through the clouds of his loneliness. Harold’s eyes welled up with tears as he realized how much he had missed due to a simple phone setting. He was grateful to Liam for helping him uncover these treasures of love. A kind smile spread across Liam’s face as he resolved to take further steps to assist.
Liam asked Haroldfor his children’s numbers and made a few calls. He informed them of the situation and encouraged them to call their father more often. Emily and Thomas were relieved to hear that their father was fine. They had been worried since they couldn’t reach him. They promised to check in regularly. Harold felt a wave of warmth, knowing everything was going well with his children. Harold’s experience reminds us all that in the hustle and bustle of life, we should never forget to call our parents. A simple phone call or visit can mean everything to them.
