For twelve years I’d worked at the hospital. One day they told me I was no longer needed. I understood that it was a cost-cutting move to replace me with someone with less experience and a lower salary.
But my understanding didn’t excise the pain of feeling abandoned and useless. At sixty-two, what opportunities existed for someone at my age “Dear Lord,” I prayed, “show me the way.” As he so often does, he answered through someone else, a fellow health educator at another hospital. When I shared my worries about my future, she told me about a conference she had attended recently.
“I’ve just learned the most helpful tool,” she said. “No matter what the situation is, there is an opposite, a benefit. Our typical response is to focus on the losses of job, marriage, home, or even health. Instead, the speaker told us to concentrate on finding what we gained with our loss.” At first, I resisted her advice as I was extremely sad. I missed the meaningful challenges of organizing health education classes for the sick. But as time passed, I grew tired of my sorrow. Maybe I should try my friend’s advice and seek some opposites.
Yet it wasn’t until our trip to Africa that I understood the power of opposite thinking. In 2023, we flew eight thousand miles to a village in West Africa. We brought many presents, believing that somehow we could improve the villagers’ lives. Instead, they taught us the opposite. Our lives were the ones that needed improving.
Despite living in mud huts without modern conveniences, running water, or sanitation (卫生设备), the villagers appeared content. Frequently laughing and greeting each other, they truly cared for their neighbors. Although we slept on the ground, I felt a peace I hadn’t known since I left my job. I had expected we would spend our time helping the poor villagers. Instead, they were teaching us that having less meant less to worry about and more time and energy for each other. These wonderful people with a different faith taught me an important lesson that guided me through the darkness of life.

B.Search for inner peace and cast off the economic darkness.
C.Stay positive and concentrate on health care education.
D.Shift her attitude to adversity and look on the bright side.
27.What lesson did the author learn from the villagers in Africa
A.Face up to the cruel realities of life.
B.Fortune favors those who use their judgement.
C.Owning more not necessarily adds to our happiness.
D.Devoting to volunteering can gain a sense of achievement.

July 2023 was the world’s warmest month on record, according to the World Meteorological Organization. As heatwaves had spread across North America, Asia and Europe, UN Secretary — General Antonio Guterres said in a speech that the planet is entering an “era of global boiling”.
How to cool the planet has long been a troubling question for scientists. They are now turning to sun-blocking technology, which refers to reflecting sunlight back into space in order to keep down the temperature of the planet’s climate.
According to Euronews, a European television news network, one idea involves pumping sun- blocking particles (粒子) into the upper atmosphere. The particles will then stay in the air and redirect sunshine back upwards. It is like applying sunscreen on the outside of Earth. Researchers at Yale University, US, outlined a plan to use 125 high-flying planes to spread the particles at latitudes (纬度) of 60 degrees north and south. The particles will then travel toward the poles, which could possibly cool the temperature there by 2 ℃. In the future, the planes could be used to refreeze the poles, said the researchers.
Another very promising technique is called “cloud brightening”, according to Chris Sacca, a US climate expert. This method involves sending sea salt particles into clouds above the sea, making them whiter and thus reflect more sunlight back into space.
In June, the US government announced in a report that it is now offering support for solar engineering research as a way to slow the rise of global temperatures. According to the report, the US government believes that the technology “offers the possibility of cooling the planet significantly on a timescale of a few years”.
However, following the report, an open letter by more than 60 scientists called for caution and more research first. Kristen Rasmussen, a climate scientist at Colorado State University, US, has been studying how these sun-blocking methods will affect rainfall patterns. She said that apart from rainfall, ecosystems and even human communities will also be affected. “We need to be very cautious on this,” Rasmussen told Scientific American.
28.Which solution is used to deal with global warming
A.Blocking the sunlight coming from the sun.
B.Reflecting the sunlight back into the space.
C.Using sunscreen on the surface of the Earth.
D.Applying advanced technology to weather control.
29.Which of the following does the writer agree with according to the text
A.The sun-blocking particles will cool the temperature at the poles to 2 ℃.
B.The sea-salt particles will reflect the sunlight back into the planet.
C.The US government believes that cloud brightening will work well this year.
D.Both sun-blocking techniques are using the principles of light reflection.
30.What is the writer’s attitude towards the sun-blocking technology
A.Positive. B.Doubtful. C.Cautious. D.Objective.
31.Where is the passage probably taken from
A.A travel journal. B.A news report.

A newly engineered type of soil can draw water out of thin air to provide plants with water and manage controlled release of fertilizer (肥料) for a constant supply of nutrients.
Supporting this exciting smart soil system is a hydrogel (水凝胶) material. In experiments, the soil containing hydrogel led to the growth of larger, healthier plants, compared to regular soil, all while using less water and fertilizer. The technology is also universal enough to be adopted across a wide range of climates, from dry regions to temperate areas.
Agriculture today accounts for 70% of global freshwater withdrawals and up to 95% in some developing countries as our global population continues to rise. The U. N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) emphasizes the importance of improving irrigation (灌溉) efficiency, adopting water-saving technologies and promoting crops with lower water footprints to ensure sustainable food production and water resource management.
Meanwhile, traditional farming methods, especially irrigation and fertilizing, face significant difficulties. As climate change intensifies and water resources become increasingly rare, the need for more efficient and sustainable irrigation practices has never been more urgent. Additionally, conventional fertilization techniques often result in too much nutrient exposure, reducing nutrient uptake efficiency and causing environmental pollution, and farmable land degradation.
“The lack of water coupled with a growing population has an immediate impact on food security,” said Yu, professor of Materials Science in the Cockrell School. “This new class of hydrogels offers a solution to meet the pressing needs of water and efficient nutrient uptake in modern sustainable agriculture.”
In experiments, plants rooted in the hydrogel soil saw a 138% increase in crop length compared to a control group in regular soil. And the improved soil can achieve 40% water savings, significantly reducing the need for frequent irrigation and ensuring strong crop development.
This research builds on previous discoveries involving hydrogels that can pull water from the atmosphere and make farming more efficient. The project will continue, and the researchers’ next moves involve integrating different types of fertilizers and longer field tests.
32.What is special about the smart soil
A.It provides air to regular soil. B.It can absorb water from the air.
C.It creates fertilizer with air. D.It can be used all over the world.
33.What is a challenge traditional farming methods face
A.The shortage of fertilizer. B.The lack of qualified seeds.
C.The decrease of labor force. D.The inefficient irrigation methods.
34.What does Professor Yu think of the new system
A.It is impractical. B.It is simple.
C.It is time-consuming. D.It is far-reaching.
35.What can be the best title for the text
A.Smart Soil Can Water and Feed Itself
B.Hydrogel Will Take the Place of Soil
C.Modern Agriculture Is Facing Drought
D.Smart Soil Is Approved for Promotion

Disappointed but not discouraged, Jack decided to turn his setback into a stepping stone. Every day after school, he would rush to a small, dimly lit room in his basement, where an old piano stood as a silent witness to his unwavering determination. The room was humble, with barely enough space for him and the piano, but it was there that he poured his heart and soul into his craft. Hours turned into days, and days into months, with Jack’s fingers bleeding from the constant practice. Despite the pain and exhaustion, he continued to press on, driven by his dream and the belief that one day he would prove them all wrong.
