Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky in 1809. His mother died when he was ten years old. Later, his family moved to Illinois and Abraham Lincoln began to study by himself. He became a lawyer in 1836 and was very successful.
In 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States. This was a very difficult time for the country. Many people in the South owned slaves and did not want to give them up. Lincoln believed that all people should be free. A war broke out between the North and the South.
The war lasted four years. Many people died. In the end, the North won and the slaves were set free. Abraham Lincoln was a great man. He is still remembered by people today.
