To most of us a goldish is something wn laise in our Sshbowl that lasts a couple of weeks and gives us a lesson in life and death. But 17- year-old Bluebell is so loved that her owner has just spent 300 on an operation to help her out.
Bluebell is hand-fed by her owner and comes to the surface once in a while. But she fell ill a few days ago. There was something growing in her mouth. The owner then noticed that started to affect her eating so he turned to Vet Hannah Jessup, who decided it was best to take it out as it was influencing the fish's quality of life.
“This is the first time I have been involved in an operation on a fish. From putting the fish to sleep to Bluebell waking up in recovery , it took one hour. However, it took about 20 minutes to remove the mass,” said Hannah.
Hannah added, “ The preparation for the operation was actually more challenging than the operation itself due to having to use specific fish anesthetic(麻醉剂). There is less known about how a body of the fish works, in terms of how quickly it will fall asleep, how it will be maintained throughout the operation , how it will react and the recovery. ”
The team also gave her a painkiller (止痛药)afterward to help with her recovery from the operation. What's more, throughout the entire operation they kept the fish wet. “The staff were using air pumps to keep oxygen flowing and syringes (注射器)of water to keep her wet,” Hannah said.
Bluebell was quickly taken home and back into the water very soon after the operation and is now healthier than she has been in months.

Many of us thought the world had four oceans—the Atlantic , Indian , Pacific and Arctic Oceans. That's what we were taught in school. However, for the first time in over a century , there's a new ocean on the map, which is “ Southern Ocean ” around the South Pole and Antarctica(南极 洲). The area is slightly bigger than twice the size of the US.
The National Geographic Society(NGS) has now officially accepted that this body of water around Antarctica is a real ocean , making it the fifth ocean. “The Southern Ocean has long been recognized by some scientists, but because there was never agreement internationally, we never officially recognized it before,” said National Geographic Society Geographer Alex Tait.
Geography teachers will now have to teach their students that the world has five oceans. Alex Tait said, “We think it's really important in education , as well as in making a map, to bring attention to the Southern Ocean as a fifth ocean. ”
National Geographic Society said its recognition of the world having a fifth ocean would have an impact on how children see the world. Mr Tait said, “Students learn information about the world through what oceans they're studying. If you don't include the Southern Ocean , then they don't learn how important it is. Recognizing the Southern Ocean would help students understand more about climate change. ”
He added, “This special area is formed due to ocean currents and temperatures. The Southern Ocean has unique sea ecosystems(生态系统). They are easier to be damaged but they are home to wonderful sea life such as whales, penguins and seals. ” And he is concerned about how climate change is affecting the Southern Ocean.
