表示“抓住”类的动词:seize, grasp, grip , take hold of
(1)Fear gripped her heart.
(2)Jealousy seized her.
(3)A wild joy took hold of her.
(4)A feeling of panic seized her. =She was seized by a feeling of panic.
(5)Anxiety tore her into pieces.
(6)Anger and bitterness covered upon me for weeks.
于是,动词通常是get the better of或者get the best of(都表示“胜过”)。
He stood up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions get the better of him. 在这句里,就用到了get the better of 的结构,表示“胜过”。
(1)Enthusiasm gets the better of me.
(2)Boredom often gets the best of them.
(3)His curiosity got the better of him.
(1)Worrying deprived him of sleep.
(2)Excitement deprived me of all power of speech.
(3)Astonishment and horror oppressed her.
(4)Anger and bitterness had preyed upon me continually.
(1)Happiness crawls up to the tips of his brows.
(2)A slight feeling of fear slowly crept on him.
(3)Self-doubt began to gnaw away at her confidence.
(4)Fear swallowed her.
(1)Joy shone from his brow.
(2)Happiness radiates from her face.
(3)Smile spread across his face.
(4)She has been in a dark mood this week.
(5)His face clouded over when he heard the news.
(1)Grief bears heavily on her.
(2)He was burdened with worries
(3)The manager carried his anger.
(4)After I lost my temper,I felt lighter.
(5)Unburdening herself of her anger gave her a sense of relief.
常见的名词有:波纹(ripple)或wave(波浪)或flood (洪流),常见的动词有:涌出(well up),surge (涌动)甚至sweep (冲;卷),有时fill/brim//take possession of (注满/盛满 / 占满 )容器,有时overflow/well(漫出/溢出)容器,在高温下甚至会boil(沸腾) .
(1)Panic surged up within him .
(2)The terrible scene filled her with fear.
(3)A wave of panic swept over her.
(4)The loneliness and grief comes in waves.
(5)His heart is overflowing with joy.
(6)I could feel anger boiling up inside me.
(7)He was brimming with sorrow when she left him .

如:“When you were a young man we were all living in the tree-tops,” said the barman, with a glance at the other customers.”
想,心想 think(想);remember(回想起,记得);recall(回想起,记起); think to oneself=think aloud(心里想)
补充,继续 begin(开始讲话); add (补充说,继续说);continue(继续);repeat(重说);
笑 laugh(发笑);smile (微笑)chuckle(低声 轻笑);sneer(嘲笑,讥讽);
喊叫 scream(尖叫,大声叫);exclaim(惊叫,呼喊);shout(大声说,怒骂); yell(喊叫); cry(喊道)snap(厉声说,怒气冲冲地说);bellow (怒吼);growl(怒吼);snarl(不耐烦地说);

宣布,要求 declare(表明,宣称);announce(宣布);stress(强调);emphasize(强调);comfort (安慰);scold(责备);demand(要求);command(命令);suggest(建议);persist(坚持);beg(恳求, 哀求)
And now I must go,” she said as soon as he had mastered his instructions.
Don’t be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track so that you don’t get lost!”
“Whatever is he saying ” said a voice, very near, distinct and shrill through the warbling of the Super-Wurlitzer.
“These women!” he said, as the machine rose into the air.
[例1] “You must have seen great changes since you were a young man,” said Winston tentatively(试探性地/犹豫地).
2] “ Seven minutes behind time,” he added, and shook his head.
[例6] “ The Ministry of Plenty’s certainly done a good job this year,” he said with a knowing shake of his head(会意地晃了下头).
[例 8] “Yes,” said Mustapha Mond, nodding his head, “you may well shudder.
[例 10] “In the place where there is no darkness,” he said, as though he had recognized the allusion(暗示).
