People in daily life usually wash their produce before eating to remove pesticide residues (农药残留物). But are your fruits and vegetables really clean enough to eat Now, 14-year-old Sirish Subash from Georgia has won the 2024 3M Young Scientist Challenge for inventing an AI-based handheld pesticide detector that is very accurate in detecting pesticide leftovers on food. The ninth grader at the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology in Snellville has received the title “America’s Top Young Scientist”.
Now in its 17th year, the challenge supports middle school students who think creatively and apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) principles to make inventions. When the finalists are chosen, they are paired with a 3M scientist who guides them over the summer to help take their ideas from just concepts to models.
Sirish spent four months competing against nine other finalists. The finalists had to complete a series of interactive challenges and were evaluated on their innovation, application of STEM, as well as their ability to inspire others.
“This year’s Young Scientist Challenge finalists have shown an incredible ability to develop creative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges,” Torie Clarke, the chief public affairs officer, said in the press release. “I am beyond impressed and inspired by their intelligence and their scientific minds.”
Two other finalists included second-place winner Minula Weerasekera from Beaverton, Oregon who developed a real solution for storing energy longer and third-place winner William Tan from Scarsdale, New York who developed a useful AI smart artificial reef (礁) to protect biodiversity underwater.
It was reported that Sirish’s journey to winning the award came from watching his mother washing vegetables and fruits and warning him to always do so. He wondered whether washing actually made a difference. And he tested the device on more than 12,000 food samples including strawberries, apples, tomatoes and spinach. The device works by shining light on the surface of the produce and measuring the wavelengths that bounce back.
4. What is the main purpose of Sirish Subash’s invention
A. To help produce pesticides. B. To make people’s food safer.
C. To water fruits and vegetables. D. To promote the study of science.
5. How do the finalists develop their inventions
A. By changing scientists’ ideas. B. By receiving guidance from scientists.
C. By applying concepts provided by scientists. D. By drawing inspiration from scientists’ models.
6. What do the inventions of the three finalists have in common
A. They change people’s habits. B. They enhance energy efficiency.
C. They solve some practical problems. D. They protect the underwater environment.
7. What does the last paragraph mainly describe about Sirish
A. How he measured his device. B. Who taught him to do research.
C. Why he developed interest in science. D. What inspired him to create the device.
C
Animals and plants also live and thrive on public squares. This creates opportunities for greater biodiversity and well-being for the human population. Researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) have studied at 103 locations in Munich how various factors affect flora and fauna (动植物). They advocate a close examination of local conditions and a more nature-focused approach to the design of public spaces.
Together with his team, Wolfgang Weisser, Professor of Terrestrial Ecology at TUM, looked at such factors as size, the occurrence of lawn, plant and tree growth, artificial light sources and green in the surroundings of the 103 public squares in Munich. The squares varied from almost entirely sealed (封闭的) to park-like squares.
Their results show, with Munich as an example, how greatly the different spaces can differ in the animals and other organisms that can live there. At the heavily sealed Marienplatz, the researchers counted only 20 species, with just one bird and moss species as well as insects and bat species. Meanwhile, at Pfrontener Platz, a space with lawns, bushes and trees, they found 156 taxa, including 21 different kinds of birds. At Johannisplatz, 118 species are present, as it has trees, hedges and some grassy areas despite being sealed to a relatively large extent.
Unsurprisingly, more plants are beneficial to many animal species. This is a factor that urban planning models already take into account. However, the study also shows that lawns, trees and bushes vary widely in terms of the diversity and numbers of the species they attract. So far, public spaces are designed with humans in mind, with little consideration to animals and other species.
The researchers concluded that the chances for greater biodiversity are increased if, instead of applying the same patterns to every location, planners take into account the local conditions and the needs of different species. To encourage more bee species, for example, they should not only plant nectar-bearing flowers, but also provide open space as habitat for bees and a source of nest-building material.
8 What does the study at TUM focus on
A. The best locations for flora and fauna.
B. Factors to be considered in square design.
C. The impact of local conditions on biodiversity.
D. The best way for humans and flora and fauna to get along.
9. What can we know from paragraph 3
A. Animals expand in sealed parks. B. Open parks support more biodiversity.
C. Open parks are not fit for birds to stay. D. Closed parks are as good as open ones.
10. What does the study say about urban greenery
A. It varies in attracting species. B. It will replace artificial lights.
C. It has nothing to do with species. D. It is well planned in urban buildings.
11. What can be the best title for the text
A. Enhancing Urban Development: Considering Local Species’ Needs
B. Human-animal Coexistence: Integrating Nature into City Designing
C. Urban Ecosystems: Challenges for Plants and Animals in Urban Spaces
D. Biodiversity in the City: Designing Urban Spaces for Humans and Animals

If you find yourself sleepy during your daily activities in your older age, you may need to consider it more than an inconvenience - since the fatigue may indicate you’re at higher risk for developing a condition that can lead to dementia (痴呆), a new study has found.
Among participants who experienced excessive daytime sleepiness and a lack of enthusiasm, 35.5% developed motoric cognitive risk syndrome (运动认知风险综合征), or MCR compared with 6.7% of people without those problems, according to the study.
MCR is marked by slow walking speed and complaints of memory problems among older people who don’t already have dementia or a mobility disability. The risk of developing dementia more than doubles in those with this syndrome, which was first described in 2013.
The findings are based on 445 adults who were aged 76 on average. Participants walked on treadmills (跑步机) so their initial gaits could be recorded, then were assessed annually from 2011 to 2018. The study authors also collected yearly data on participants’ recollections of their sleep quality and quantity in the two weeks leading up to the assessments.
Over a follow-up period of roughly three years on average, 36 participants developed MCR pared with “good” sleepers, “poor” sleepers had only a slightly higher risk of MCR.
“The study findings may help physicians and patients be more open to asking questions about sleep patterns, and to looking more closely at walking speed when making an early diagnosis,” said Dr. Richard Isaacson, director of research at the Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases in Florida.
“If you’re already experiencing mobility issues, fall prevention can help,” Isaacson said, “that can include physical and occupational therapy evaluation, and at-home adaptations such as installing bars in the shower, removing clutter (杂物) and using night-lights.”
“MCR syndrome is newly identified, so experts still have a lot to learn before they can explain in detail what causes it and how it affects the body,” Isaacson said.
12. What does the underlined word “fatigue” probably mean in paragraph 1
A. Weakness. B. Tiredness. C. Comfort. D. Happiness.
13. What might be the feature of MCR
A. Slow movement. B. More complaints.
C. Excessive sleepiness. D. Rapid cognitive declines.
14. How did the study collect data on participants’ sleep
A. By writing sleep diaries. B. By doing treadmill tests.
C. By conducting annual interviews. D. By monitoring sleep at home.
15. What should a senior with mobility issues do
A. Live normally. B. Reduce activity. C. Stay awake. D. Avoid falls.

Bob, from Leavenworth, Washington, is a dad of three young adults. Bob has always held the belief that learning to take care of the spaces we occupy, whether it’s our home, car or even our own body, is directly tied to our mental well-being. He thought it was important to teach young adults to maintain a house or a car to set them up for success in life. So he kept teaching his adult children basic skills like how to repair things around the house as they were growing up.
“Too often I find that young people are overwhelmed with the common daily responsibilities coming along with adulthood. I think they just need someone to sit with them and instruct them how to tackle them one thing at a time. Even as they grow up and fly the nest, they will realize their parents’ help is as essential as they were growing up, just in different ways,” Bob said.
Bob had guidance on many things, each piece of which was from his own life experiences. He taught his children one simple rule for backing up a truck — keep one hand on the bottom of the steering wheel and turn in the direction you want the truck to go. To keep a lawn (草坪) in top shape, Bob showed them how to cut in a different direction each time, so the grass won’t start to lean one way. When they’re unsure if it is time to change their tires, Bob has a practical trick using a coin to check the tire thread (螺纹). He showed all these to his children patiently.
His 18-year-old daughter Emily thought her dad did a great job of teaching things briefly, showing them that whatever is weighing on them is probably an easier solution than they think.
Then she started recording her dad giving “Dad Advice” and posting the videos on her social media account, through which she wanted to share how helpful her dad was.

【答案】 My Experience of Participating in a Contest on Traffic Safety Knowledge
Last week, I participated in the Traffic Safety Knowledge Contest held at our school, which turned out to be a both challenging and enlightening journey.
The competition started with a written test that assessed our understanding of traffic rules and safety measures and it required a deep knowledge of traffic regulations. The next round was an oral quiz, where we had to answer questions on the spot. This was where I felt my preparation paid off, as I was able to recall much I had studied.
As far as I’m concerned, the competition is not just about passing a test but about saving lives. I hope more students will join in future events to raise awareness about traffic safety.

【答案】One day, Emily was shocked when she logged into (登录) her account. Her “Dad Advice” videos had been viewed by over five million people and her account had attracted over one million followers around the world. Many young adults who followed the account even affectionately called Bob “Dad” in their comments and expressed gratitude for his weekly advice. One user commented, “My dad died in November, and I’ve been wanting so badly to ask him how to get the lines in my lawn.” “Emily, thank you for sharing your dad’s advice with us. Bob, thank you for being our ‘dad’,” another user commented. They expressed that tips from “Dad Advice” videos benefited them a lot.
Becoming a “dad” figure to millions, Bob was greatly motivated. With the help of Emily, he continued to share videos on tips and tricks to navigate young adults in their daily life. Instead of updating one “Dad Advice” video per week, they produced more videos a week. Besides the topic of daily repairs, Bob’s videos gradually covered the topics of financial advice and even mental health tips to young adults, or those that their followers requested. Bob enjoyed being able to help by teaching what he knows how to do. Bob said his goal was to help more young people feel confident as they set up for their life.
