If a wheelchair malfunctions, it’s like a body catching a cold. For Zhu Siwei, a “wheelchair doctor”, diagnosing (诊断) these issues has become second nature.
At 33, Zhu brought his expertise to the world stage in the summer of 2024 at the Paris Paralympics (残奥会), where he worked at both the Paralympic Village and competition venues. As part of a technical team, Zhu offered service to athletes and officials from around the globe, keeping their equipment in top shape.
Zhu describes how each technician on the team brings their own expertise — some specialize in sewing, others in welding (焊接). “Many of the technicians from other countries have years of experience and a deep understanding of wheelchair repair,” Zhu says. “It’s a rare and valuable opportunity to work alongside them.”
In the Paralympic Village, Zhu sometimes found himself going beyond his official duties. When a motorized suitcase that an athlete was using for mobility wouldn’t charge, even though it wasn’t his responsibility, Zhu stepped in to help solve the problem. He could sense the athletes’ appreciation after fixing their wheelchairs, their gratitude unmistakable in their eyes.
With a decade of experience in wheelchair repair, Zhu has observed the continual development of the equipment used by disabled individuals. As the wheelchairs change, Zhu recognizes the importance of improving his repair skills alongside them.
Wang Tiegang, Zhu’s colleague during the Paris Paralympics, has also witnessed firsthand the advancements in equipment for people with disabilities. “We’re gradually moving toward high-tech solutions,” Wang says. “This year, we’ve integrated 3D printing technology on-site, and new wheelchairs are becoming lighter. The demands on welding techniques are also growing, so we’re committed to ongoing learning.”
This year Zhu has taken on a new initiative for individuals with disabilities. “When a wheelchair breaks down, it’s often much more challenging for someone with a disability to go out and find a repair shop compared to able-bodied individuals. They also tend to have their own circles,” Zhu explains. “We teach them simple repair techniques, enabling them to assist one another with basic fixes.”
4. What does Zhu Siwei do
A. He is a coach. B. He is a doctor. C. He is an athlete. D. He is a technician.
5. What is suggested about Zhu Siwei in paragraph 4
A. He was athletic and emotional. B. He was overburdened by work.
C. He was misunderstood by others. D. He was warm-hearted and helpful.
6. What do Wang Tiegang and Zhu Siwei both attach importance to
A. Continuous learning. B. Innovative equipment.
C. The demands of the athletes. D. The well-being of the disabled.
7. What is the purpose of Zhu Siwei’s new initiative
A. To attract more able-bodied individuals to help the disabled.
B. To encourage social connections between the disabled.
C To reduce the living costs for those with disabilities.
D. To promote self-reliance of those with disabilities.

As the weather starts heating up people prefer to go outside — but with the outdoors comes the possibility of getting bitten by mosquitoes.
“Some individuals are bitten way more than others. Mosquitoes are remarkably good at trying to locate a person to drink their blood as their eyes their vision, their nose — everything about them is geared towards (适合) finding us and biting us,” Jeffrey Riffell, a biology professor at the University of Washington said in a video.
Riffell and his team discovered that male mosquitoes drink nectar (花蜜) from flowers to get sugar while female mosquitoes find humans “by following a trail of scent cues”. Mosquitoes are also drawn to certain colors — they love red and black, but tend to dislike white and green, Riffell added.
“Unfortunately, they can learn. If you are very attractive and they bite you and drink your blood, they will then go back to you because they learned this kind of positive association,” Riffell said. “The good news is that they can learn to avoid you, so if you’re trying to swat (打) them, they’ll learn that and they’ll avoid you a little bit.”
Mosquitoes can detect three different types of sugar sources, according to the video. One of those sources is fruits, and researchers are trying to create the scent that mosquitoes are drawn to. If the mosquitoes are attracted to that scent, then researchers can lace it with a toxin that can kill the insects.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has called the mosquito “the world’s deadliest animal” because the insects can spread diseases to humans. Research has found that climate change has led to an increased risk of diseases spread by mosquitoes. Last week, Southern Nevada Health District warned residents that the area was experiencing the highest level of mosquito activity in known history, with more than 3,000 mosquitoes testing positive for West Nile virus. “The information that we find in the laboratory has real-world implications and can really help, I think, many people in many different parts of the world,” Riffell said in the video.
8. What is the main idea of paragraph 2
A. It’s easy for mosquitoes to find their previous victims.
B. Mosquitoes’ biological traits help them target humans.
C. Mosquitoes prefer to bite a specific group of individuals.
D. Environment plays a minor role in mosquitoes’ biting behavior.
9. Which of the following least affects your chance of getting mosquito bites
A. The scent you give off. B. The color of your clothes.
C. Your daily consumption of sugar. D. Your past experience with mosquitoes.

A. Mix. B. Detect. C. Replace. D. Compare.
11. What does Jeffrey Riffell think of the research
A. It faces big challenges. B. It’s practically significant.
C. It’s still in the early stages. D. It inspires other researches.

Meta has announced third-party AR filters (滤镜) will no longer be available on its apps, including Instagram, as of January 2025.
Filters have become a key feature on Instagram. The most popular of these — which often involve beautifying the user’s appearance — are created by users themselves via the Meta Spark Studio. However, the use of beautifying AR filters has long been connected to worsened mental health and body image problems in young women.
So, why wait until now to remove a popular but controversial (有争议的) technology In April 2024, Meta added a US $35-40 billion investment in the technology and is pulling AR technology in-house. Filters will not be going away altogether on Instagram. First-party filters created by Meta will continue to be available. At present, the 140 filters available on Instagram’s official account are insignificant compared to the library of millions of filters created by third-parties and these official filters do not feature any beautifying ones.
The removal of third-party filters will see complex and realistic beautifying filters gone from Meta platforms. However, this is hardly cause for celebration.
Now, after having access to AR filters on Instagram for seven years, users are even more habituated to their presence. They also have many more alternatives to access a version of the technology inside another app.
When people post with a filter on Instagram, a watermark that links to the filter and its creator appears on the image. This watermark is important to assist users in determining whether someone’s appearance is changed or not. Some users get around the watermark by downloading their filtered photo, and re-uploading it so their filtered appearance is more difficult to detect. By removing popular beauty filters from Instagram, this practice will become the default (默认的) way for users to post with these filters on the platform.
The removal of beauty filters on Instagram will not stop their use. Instead, it will drive users to other platforms to access filters. These filters will be more sophisticated and harder to detect when they are re-posted cross platform, without the benefit of having the watermark indicator.
12. What change has Meta made to its AR strategy
A. It will release beautifying filters in the near future.
B. It has reduced the variety of third-party filters available.
C. It has decided to develop AR technology independently.
D. It will continue investing in third-party filter development.
13. What might Meta’s decision about AR filters lead to
A. Higher quality of third-party filters. B. Enhanced regulation on AR technology.
C. Users’ greater reliance on alternative apps. D. Users’ increasing use of Meta’s official filters.
14. What can be inferred about Instagram’s watermark
A. It seems to be ineffective. B. It brings users lots of trouble.
C. It’s hard to notice by one’s eyes. D. It’s a good way to prevent identity theft.
15. What is the author’s attitude to Meta’s decision on AR filters
A. Tolerant. B. Unclear. C. Favorable. D. Doubtful.

A good rest is a fundamental requirement to compete well. Some athletes downplay (轻视) this aspect. ____17____ This is a serious mistake that puts both your performance and health at risk. If you’re one of those people who get nervous before playing, you should focus on enhancing sleep habits the week before a competition. Having a rest schedule and limiting screen use before bed can promote rest.
____18____ Athletes who receive mental training use pre-competition routines. These are a series of actions that they repeat at important moments to help them concentrate and calm their nerves. For example, preparing the bag, warming up, or repeating a phrase several times. These can help them gain concentration before a competition.
When having to face an opponent in a changing context, a successful strategy is to spend time examining him. ____19____ Although not everything can be predicted, it’s useful to establish similar patterns. Lack of information and uncertainty are two causes of nervousness. Therefore, understanding your opponent is a very good idea to reduce anxiety before competing.
Words have a power that often goes unnoticed. A. Some even reduce hours of sleep to continue training.
B. Habits help you find peace of mind when you feel restless.
C. The goal is to anticipate the movements of your opponent.
D. All athletes have expectations regarding themselves and others.
E. The most common way to do this is through breathing techniques.
F. Let’s see what the psychological tricks are to calm fear before a competition.

Adam Golebiewski, a 17-year-old teenage footballer on his school’s team, was extremely passionate about sports. Every match was a stage where he danced with the ball. However, fate (命运) had a cruel twist in store for this young athlete.
One evening, as the sun painted the sky with golden light, Adam was making his way home after a thrilling victory, his mind still recalling the cheers of the crowd. It was on this seemingly ordinary road that a tragic accident occurred, forever changing his life. A collision (碰撞), swift and unexpected, resulted in the loss of his legs below the knees. The world he had known seemed to collapse around him.
Days turned into weeks, and Adam found himself trapped in a cocoon (茧) of despair. The once familiar scent (气味) of freshly cut grass and the thrill of the game were replaced by the smell of hospital rooms and the bitter taste of loss. It was during these darkest moments that the light of hope glowed, thanks to the support of his teachers, coach, and classmates. They stood by him, their words of encouragement bringing comfort to him, reminding him that his spirit and his passion remained uninjured.
With time, Adam slowly recovered from his despair. He realized that while his body had been changed, his deep love for sports remained the same as ever. Fueled by this realization, he began a new journey of rehabilitation training (康复训练), a path lined with challenges. Each day, he pushed himself to the limits, bearing the pain with his strong will. Day by day, he persisted in training, and his health gradually recovered and his body became as strong as before. He was convinced that he could still become a basketball player.

The highlights of the event include an exhibition showing the evolution of hanfu through history, a hanfu fashion show featuring modern interpretations of ancient designs, and a fun photo session where you can dress up in hanfu and have your portrait taken.
I know how fascinated you are by Chinese culture. I sincerely invite you to join me in this cultural event.
Warm regards,
Li Hua

His goal was to join the school basketball team, but its high standards seemed unattainable for him. Frustrated by his initial inability to meet the requirements, he felt his daily training seemed like wasting time. Just when he was on the edge of giving up, a basketball coach of his school reached out to him. With kind words and a wealth of experience, the coach designed personalized training sessions for Adam. For a whole year, Adam pushed himself to the limit, growing stronger both physically and mentally. His determination and hard work slowly restored his confidence.
Finally, Adam became a member of the basketball team with the help of his school basketball coach. He tightly hugged his basketball coach, expressing his gratitude to him. He acknowledged that without the coach’s patience and guidance, he might have given up sports altogether. In the basketball team, Adam found not just comfort and friendship among his teammates, but also a sense of belonging. They cheered each other during practice and always had each other’s backs on the court. On the field, with each pass and shot, Adam proved that the love for the game was beyond physical limitations. His story spread, inspiring not only disabled athletes but also anyone who faces difficulties in life.
