One summer night in a seaside house, I was asleep. Suddenly, I felt myself being lifted from bed and carried in my father’s arms out to the beach. Overhead the stars were shining. “Watch!” As my father spoke, one of the stars flashed (掠过) across the sky. And before the wonder of this could disappear, another star flashed, then another... “What are they ” I asked. “Falling stars. They come every year on a certain night in August. I thought you would like to see the show,” said my father.
Many years have passed, but I still remember that night, because I was the lucky seven-year-old boy whose father believed that a new experience was more important for a small boy than an unbroken night’s sleep. Once my father gave me Zuleika Dobson, Max Beerbohm’s classic story of undergraduate life at Oxford. I liked it, and told him so. “Why don’t you think about going there yourself ” he said. A few years later, with luck and a scholarship (奖学金), I did. My father had the gift of opening doors to areas of newness for his children.
Children are naturally curious and love to try new things. But someone must offer them the choices. Years ago, when the Quiz Kids was surprising American radio audiences with the kids’ intelligence, a writer set out to discover what common characters there were in the backgrounds of these children. Some children were from poor families, but some from rich. Some had been to super schools, while some had not. But in every case there was at least one parent who shared something that the child was interested in, who gave encouragement and praise for achievement, and who made a game of searching out the answers to questions.
The most valuable thing parents can pass on to the next generation is not money or houses, but a capacity (能力) for wonder and gratitude, as well as a sense of aliveness and joy.
24.Why did the author’s father carry him out
A.To teach him knowledge of stars. B.To change his sleeping habits.
C.To have some parent-child time. D.To bring him a new experience.
25.What did the author think of his father
A.He was good at leading him. B.He loved to try new things.
C.He did so much for the family. D.He had many books of short stories.
26.What does the author mainly try to show through a writer’s discovery
A.Excellent children are naturally curious.
B.Parents of excellent kids have something in common.
C.Intelligent children have their own way of learning things.
D.Parents’ personality has much impact on their children.
27.What could be a suitable title for the text
A.Parents are good guides for their kids
B.Childhood experiences can change one’s life
C.Children typically learn new skills in daily life
D.Parents’ encouragement is important for a child

When learning a foreign language, most people fall back on traditional methods: reading, writing, listening and repeating. But if you also gesture (做手势) with your arms while studying, you can remember the vocabulary better, even months later. Linking a word to brain areas responsible for movement strengthens the memory of its meaning. This is the conclusion a research team reached after using magnetic pulses (磁脉冲) to disturb these areas in language learners.
As Mathias and his colleagues describe in the Journal of Neuroscience, they had 22 German-speaking adults learn a total of 90 invented words (such as “lamube” for “camera” and “atesi” for “thought”) over four days. While the test subjects first heard the new vocabulary, they were also shown a video of a person making a gesture that matched the meaning of the word. When the word was repeated, the subjects performed the gesture themselves.
Five months later, they were asked to translate the vocabulary they had learnt into German in a test. At the same time, they had equipment tied to their heads that sent weak magnetic pulses to their primary motor cortex (运动皮层)—the brain area that controls voluntary arm movements. According to the results of the experiment, the researchers concluded that the motor cortex helped the translation of the vocabulary learnt with gestures.
The effect did not appear when the test subjects were only presented with matching pictures instead of gestures when learning vocabulary. In contrast, children—unlike adults—seem to benefit from pictures as much as gestures in the long run. In an experiment published in 2020, the Leipzig research group had young adults and eight-year-old children listen to new vocabulary for five days, sometimes paired with matching pictures or videos of gestures. After two months, the two methods were still tied. But after six months, the adults benefited more from the gestures than the pictures, while the children were helped equally by both.
28.Which method might be better in memorising words according to the passage

C.Reading the words repeatedly. D.Watching videos.
29.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about
A.The purpose of the research. B.The design of the research.
C.The subjects of the research. D.The result of the research.
30.What helped remember the meanings of the new words
A.The best questions. B.The motor cortex. C.The word type. D.The equipment.
31.What do the underlined words “were still tied” mean in the last paragraph
A.Failed to have beneficial effects. B.Did not help the adults equally.
C.Achieved the same results. D.Were connected with each other.

Humans’ voices frighten wildlife in a South African wildlife reserve (保护区) even more than the roars of lions, found by a study led by Michael Clinchy at the University of Western Ontario in Canada.
“In theory, this is a protected area, so these animals should not be fearful of us,” Clinchy says. “But (our study finds that) whether you’re a wildlife tourist, or a hunter, or whatever, you’re all going to be considered as the same thing. The presence of the human is equally frightful, regardless of what type of human you are.”
Clinchy and his colleagues had already discovered that the fear of predators (捕食者) can cause species to decrease in number. Wanting to find out which was the most feared, the team decided to test humans against lions—often thought to be the world’s most fearsome predator on land, says Clinchy.
They set up loudspeakers and cameras on trees 10 meters away from animal paths near 21 waterholes in Greater Kruger National Park, South Africa. The park hosts one of the largest remaining lion populations in the world.
When animals approached the waterholes, the speakers automatically played back one of four kinds of recordings, all at the same volume (音量). These included men and women speaking calmly in local languages and dialects, the roar of lions, gun shots with or without barking dogs and the calls of regional birds like wood owls.
The researchers captured 15,000 videos of 19 species reacting to their recordings. They found that wildlife ran around in response to human voices more than to any other sounds. They were also 40 percent quicker to run away—leaving the waterhole even during the dry season—when hearing humans compared with lions or hunting sounds. The animals were unlikely to have learned these fear reactions through their limited contact with humans, says Clinchy. “It does seem to be ingrained.”
The only species that didn’t escape from people’s voices was the lions themselves. “The lions didn’t run from anything,” he says.
The findings build on previous studies of animals’ strongly fearful reactions to humans highlighting the damaging impact that our presence can have throughout wildlife habitats. “Just the fear of us could potentially be having significant ecological results,” says Clinchy.
Even so, the findings could lead to positive results as well, he adds. Recordings of human voices might stop wildlife from entering crop fields or livestock farms, or even protect rhinoceroses (犀牛) from walking in areas where horn hunting is more likely to happen.
32.What kind of person do wild animals fear most
A.Tourists. B.All humans. C.Local people. D.Hunters.
33.Why did the researchers choose lion roars in the recordings
A.Lions roar very loudly.
