BEFORE 6th century BCE The Greek thinker Thales of Miletus notes magnetic rocks, or lodestones (天然磁石). 1st century CE Chinese diviners make primitive compasses with iron spoon that can turn around to point south. 1269 French scholar Pierre de Maricourt sets out the basic laws of magnetic attraction, repulsion, and poles. AFTER 1824 French mathematician Siméon Poisson models the forces in a magnetic field. 1940s American physicist Walter Maurice Elsasser attributes Earth’s magnetic field to iron swirling in its outer core as the planet rotates. 1958 Explorer 1 space mission shows Earth’s magnetic field extending far out into space. By the late 1500s, ships’ captains already relied on magnetic compasses to maintain their course across the oceans. Yet no one knew how they worked. Some thought the compass needle was attracted to the North Star, others that it was drawn to magnetic mountains in the Arctic. It was English physician William Gilbert who discovered that Earth itself is magnetic. Stronger reasons are obtained from sure experiments and demonstrated arguments than from probable conjectures (推测) and the opinions of philosophical speculators. William Gilbert Gilbert’s breakthrough came not from a flash of inspiration, but from 17 years of careful experiment. He learned all he could from ships’ captains and compass makers, and then he made a model globe, or “terrella,” out of the magnetic rock lodestone and tested compass needles against it. The needles reacted around the terrella just as ships’ compasses did on a larger scale—showing the same patterns of declination (pointing slightly away from true north at the geographic pole, which differs from magnetic north) and inclination (tilting down from the horizontal toward the globe). Gilbert concluded, rightly, that the entire planet is a magnet and has a core of iron. He published his ideas in the book De Magnete (On the Magnet) in 1600, causing a sensation. Johannes Kepler and Galileo, in particular, were inspired by his suggestion that Earth is not fixed to rotating celestial spheres, as most people still thought, but is made to spin by the invisible force of its own magnetism.
21.Before the 16th century, how did captains navigate across oceans
A.The North Star navigated their ships.
B.The magnetic mountains in the Arctic guided their journey.
C.Magnetic compasses helped them maintain the course.
D.The forces in a magnetic field attracted the ships.
22.How did William Gilbert find out the fact that Earth itself is magnetic
A.Through trials and errors.
B.Through some personal philosophical speculation.
C.By acquiring some flash inspiration.
D.By studying the ideas of some philosophers.
23.Which of the following statement might Galileo agree with
A.The earth stays still.
B.Gilbert successfully refuted the laws of magnetic attraction.
C.Gilbert’s findings and conclusions are sensational.
D.The earth has its own magnetic field.

Those who had the pleasure of watching Benny Goodman at work saw a rather ordinary-looking man in rimless glasses and a conservative business suit; but they also saw a human being who could play the clarinet(单簧管) like no one before or since. This made Benny Goodman a unique individual.
Other Americans who have stood out from the flock include Joe DiMaggio, Beverly Sill, Ernest Hemingway and Jonas Salk. They, like Benny Goodman, were recognized and honored for no other reason than excellence.
It is doing something better than other people that makes us unique. Yet a surprising number of people still see individuality as a surface thing. They wear garish clothes, dye their hair strange colors and decorate their skin with tattoos to make some kind of social statement. But an ordinary guy who has dyed his hair purple or orange is nothing more than the same person with a funny-looking head.
The whole purpose of individuality is excellence. Those who invent, who improvise(即兴发挥), who know more about a subject than other people do, and who take something that doesn’t work and make it work––these people are the very soul of capitalism.
Charles Kettering didn’t like the idea of cranking a car to make it start, so he invented the electric starter. Henry Ford figured out the assembly-line technique and made it possible to mass-produce automobiles, and Elisha Otis, inventor of the elevator, indirectly created the city sky-line. These people understood that individualism means working at the top of one’s capacity.
The ones with the purple hair and the funky jewelry are just along for the ride, trying to be “different” and not knowing how to go about it.
The student who earns straight A’s on his report card has grasped the idea and has found the real meaning of individuality. So has the youngster who has designed his own spaceship, who gives piano recitals, who paints pictures of the world around him.
Benny Goodman understood it too. This is why he was at his best, blowing his clarinet, in a blue suit and black shoes.
24.The author mentions the appearance of Benny Goodman to _________.
A.show what a talented musician should look like
B.introduce an important figure in the musical world
C.contrast with his talent in music performance
D.indicate that he can’t stand out from the flock
25.The author would most probably agree that _________.
A.an individualist tends to seek difference both in character and appearance
B.the essence of individualism lies in pursuing excellence to the full
C.being different in appearance is the very first step to being individual
D.those who strive to win the recognition of others are real individualists
26.According to the passage, which individual’s actions may not truly embody the essence of individualism
A.A scientist who conducts research solely advancing knowledge for the greater good rather than for personal recognition.
B.A social media influencer who conforms to popular opinions to maintain a large following.
C.An artist who creates unique works but fail to gain fame and recognition from others.
D.An entrepreneur who prioritizes ethical considerations over profit in his business practices.
27.For the main thread, the article is organized by way of __________.
A.specific to general B.cause and effect
C.examples and conclusion D.comparison and contrast

Growing up in Ukraine, Vadim didn’t know what it was like to live in a safe, stable home. His parents were alcoholics who would often beat him. They’d even stuff him into a wine container, breaking his little body and leaving only a small opening at the top so he could breathe and see — but only just a little.
By the time Vadim turned 9, he was living in an orphanage (孤儿院). Unfortunately, as is the case with far too many little ones, his life only got worse there. Not only was he hurt, but he was placed in a room on the third floor, making it impossible to get downstairs in a wheelchair.
This left Vadim crawling up and down the stairs, an activity that was both physically and mentally exhausting. He’d often be late for meals. If the food wasn’t already gone by the time he arrived, other kids would steal from him.
Then, a chain effect began when some special folks visited the orphanage. They told him a story about a spiritual figure who advocated love and forgiveness. This conversation helped the 14-year-old find his faith and, in turn, he had more hope than he ever had before.
Today, Vadim is on longer the boy subject to fate. He is a father to his own kids, and his life couldn’t be more different or better. Over the years, he’s discovered a gift for expressing himself through art. This inspired Tim Tebow Foundation, an organization fighting for the most vulnerable (脆弱的) people around the world, to ask if he’d like to create a piece that represented what it looked and felt like for him to have gone from “darkness to light.”
The result A truly remarkable painting that features Vadim, in his wheelchair, leaving behind his old home, including the wine container his parents stuffed him into. His new direction includes a beautiful forest full of fall leaves and bright light, showing the hope he is said to have found in the inspiring story.
28.According to the passage, Vadim’s parents treated him .
A.abusively B.forgivingly C.thoughtfully D.strictly
29.Why did Vadim crawl up and down the stairs when living in the orphanage
A.Because his little roommates often did damage to his wheelchair.
B.Because other children would take his meal without permission.
C.Because he couldn’t use the wheelchair to go downstairs from a high floor.
D.Because getting downstairs was demanding for him physically and mentally.
30.The phrase “a chain effect ” in paragraph 4 refers to .
A.an effective treatment for Vadim’s disability
B.a series of positive changes occurring in Vadim’s life
C.a sense of hope from the story of a spiritual figure
D.a helping hand from Tim Tebow Foundation
31.What is the message that Vadim wants to convey in his remarkable painting
A.He admires the beauty and harmony of nature.
B.He leads a miserable life with his own kids.
C.He excels in delicate painting techniques.
D.He says farewell to the past and harvests happiness.

Hundreds of people die at sea every year due to ship and airplane accidents. Emergency teams have little time to rescue those in the water because the probability of finding a person alive falls dramatically after six hours. Beyond tides and challenging weather conditions, unsteady coastal currents often make search and rescue operations extremely difficult.
New insight into coastal flows gained by an international research team led by George Haller, Professor of Nonlinear Dynamics at ETH Zurich, promises to enhance the search and rescue techniques currently in use. Using tools from dynamical systems theory and ocean data, the team has developed an algorithm (算法) to predict where objects and people floating in water will go. “Our work has a clear potential to save lives,” says Mattia Serra, the first author of a study recently published in Nature Communications.
In today’s rescue operations at sea, complicated models of ocean dynamics and weather forecasting are used to predict the path of floating objects. For fast-changing coastal waters, however, such predictions are often inaccurate due to uncertain boundaries and missing data. As a result, a search may be launched in the wrong location, causing a loss of precious time.
Haller’s research team obtained mathematical results predicting that objects floating on the ocean’s surface should gather along a few special curves (曲线) which they call TRansient Attracting Profiles (TRAPs). These curves can’t be seen with our eyes but can be tracked from instant ocean surface current data using recent mathematical methods developed by the ETH team. This enables quick and precise planning of search paths that are less sensitive to uncertainties in the time and place of the accident.
In cooperation with a team from MIT, the ETH team tested their new, TRAP-based search algorithm in two separate ocean experiments near Martha’s Vineyard, which is on the northeastern coast of the United States. Working from the same real-time data available to the Coast Guard, the team successfully identified TRAPs in the region in real-time. They found that buoys and manikins (浮标和人体模型) thrown in the water indeed quickly gathered along these emerging curves. “Of several competing approaches tested in this project, this was the only algorithm that consistently found the right location”, says Haller.
“Our results are rapidly obtained, easy to interpret, and cheap to perform,” points out Serra. Haller stresses: “Our hope is that this method will become a standard part of the tool kit of coast guards everywhere.”
32.In a search and rescue operation, .
A.the survival rate drops to almost zero after six hours B.the use of dynamics leads to the wrong location
C.weather conditions are a determining factor D.changing currents present a challenge
33.The main significance of the new algorithm is .
A.accurately predicting weather conditions during rescue operations
B.dependence on satellite technology to locate distressed individuals at sea
C.cost-effective, efficient tracking of objects and individuals in coastal waters
D.predicting the exact time and location of ocean accidents
34.Paragraph 5 mainly talks about .
A.the collection of data B.the testing of the algorithm
C.the identification of the TRAPs D.the cooperation of two research teams
35.Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A.How Mathematics Can Save Lives at Sea
B.How Coastal Waters Affect Saving Lives
C.Why Algorithms Are Popular in Rescue Operations
D.Why Success Rates of Rescue Operations Have Fallen

How to Show Your Friends You Love Them
Psychologists have long thought that humans need meaningful social connections to survive. In fact, it’s connected to our mental and physical happiness. 36 . Here are some tips on how to strengthen the existing friendships in our lives.
Give them your skills and talents
Being generous with your friends — sharing your time, attention or resources with them — is an easy way to keep your friendships. People want to be and stay friends with people who value them, and generosity is a way to express that. Think about what your skills and talents are. 37 .
Shower them with admiring
We often think of admiring as the sort of love we show in romantic relationships. But admiring is more than holding hands and kissing. It’s about communicating love and appreciation. There are many ways you can show love to your friends. 38 . Tell them when you think of them in passing. These simple acts provide a layer of safety in the relationship.
39
Think about how good it feels to tell a friend you secretly like a trashy TV show and hear them answer “me too!” We feel a deeper connection to our friends when our vulnerability (脆弱) is met with support. It means they accept us for who we really are, the good and the bad.
Don’t sweep your disagreements under the rug (毯子)
40 . People often see them as something that’s supposed to be fun and lighthearted, or less formal than romantic or family relationships, so they downplay problems when they arise. But being able to deal with disagreements with friends in a healthy way can strengthen your friendships. Try talking about them.
A.Sing high praise for them
B.Say your struggles and joys
C.Tell them how much they mean to you
D.It can be scary to be open with our feelings
E.And find a way to turn that into a generous act
F.It’s hard to deal with disagreements in friendships
G.Knowing that we have people to care for us makes us feel confident

Celebrity has become one of the most important representatives of popular culture. Fans used to be crazy about a specific film, but now the public 41 to base its consumption on the interest of celebrity attached to any given product. Besides, fashion magazines have almost 42 the practice of putting models on the cover because they don’t sell nearly as well as famous 43 . As a result, celebrities have realized their unbelievably powerful market potential, moving from advertising for others’ products to 44 their own.
Celebrity clothing lines aren’t a 45 new phenomenon, but in the past they were typically aimed at the ordinary consumers, and 46 a few TV actresses. Today they’re started by first-class stars whose products enjoy equal fame with some world top 47 . The most successful start-ups have been those by celebrities with 48 personal style. As celebrities become more and more experienced at the market, they expand their production scale rapidly, 49 almost all the products of daily life.
However, for every success story, there’s a related 50 tale of a celebrity who overvalued his consumer appeal. No matter how famous the product’s 51 is, if it fails to impress consumers with its own qualities, it begins to resemble an exercise in self-promotional marketing. And once the 52 attention dies down, consumer interest might fade, loyalty returning to tried-and-true labels.
Today, celebrities face even more severe embarrassment. The pop-cultural circle might be bigger than ever, but its rate of turnover has speeded up as well. Each misstep threatens to 53 a celebrity’s shelf life, and the same newspaper or magazine that once brought him fame has no problem picking him to pieces when the opportunity appears. 54 , the ego’s (自我的) potential for expansion is limitless. Having already achieved great wealth and public recognition, many celebrities see fashion as the next frontier to be conquered. As the saying goes, success and failure always go hand in hand. Their success as 55 might last a lifetime, but fashion-like celebrity-has always been short-lived.

阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个恰当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Late one autumn day at the aquatic center in Ancenis, France, something went quietly, horribly wrong. An 18-year-old named Jean-Francois LeRoy was a regular, coming often in the early evenings to swim in the 25-meter pool. Drownings are often difficult 56 (spot). Most are near-silent incidents
57 the victim quickly sinks out of view. On this particular day maybe the lifeguards weren’t paying as close attention as they 58 have been. Certainly they believed the tall athletic LeRoy was not a high-risk swimmer.
But on this evening LeRoy was practicing apnea(屏气) swimming — testing 59 far he could swim underwater on one breath — and at some point, 60 making any visible or audible disturbance on the water’s surface, he lost consciousness. The guards failed to notice as he stopped swimming and sank to the bottom of the deep end of the pool. With his arms 61 (cross) over his head and his feet twitching, he was unconscious and 62 (drown). It would take him as little as four minutes to die.
Although the human lifeguards watching the pool were unaware, 12 large machine eyes deep underwater
63 (watch) the whole thing and taking notice. Just nine months earlier the center had installed a state-of-the-art electronic surveillance system called Poseidon, a network of cameras that 64 (feed) a computer programmed to use a set of complex mathematical procedure to distinguish between normal and distressed swimming. Poseidon covers a pool’s entire swimming area and can distinguish among dim reflections, shadows, and actual swimmers. It can also tell when real swimmers are moving in a way they’re not supposed to. 65 the computer detects a possible problem, it instantly activates a beeper to warn lifeguards and displays the exact incident location on a monitor. The rest is up to the humans above the water.
Sixteen seconds after Poseidon noticed the large, sinking lump that was Jean-Francois LeRoy, lifeguards had LeRoy out of the pool and gave him first aid. He started breathing again. After one night in the local hospital, he was released with no permanent damage. Poseidon had saved his life.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As a child growing up in China, I was always fascinated by Kunqu, a traditional Chinese opera originated in the Ming Dynasty, also listed as the world’s intangible cultural heritage. I would often watch the traditional performances with awe, enchanted by the grace and elegance of the performers on stage.
Though I loved Kunqu, I never thought I could learn it, believing it was something only the most talented and experienced could master. However, one day, my friends invited me to attend a grand Kunqu performance in Suzhou, China, which really made me feel an urge to take on the challenge and learn it.
However, my journey learning Kunqu was not easy. I had to learn the basics of the ancient art form, from the complex techniques used to create the unique vocal style to the complex hand gestures that added a sense of elegance and grace to the movements. It was not just a matter of physical training; I needed to understand the rich history and cultural significance that Kunqu represented.
My first few lessons were rough and I found myself struggling to keep up with the pace of the class. I was disappointed that I couldn’t match the other classmates’ skill level, and I found myself feeling discouraged. However, with countless efforts and dedication, I gradually saw improvements. My voice became stronger and more expressive, and my gestures flowed more naturally. I was fascinated by the subtle differences of the style, and began to develop a deeper appreciation for the beauty of Kunqu.
As I spent more time immersed in the world of Kunqu, I began to appreciate the depth of knowledge that went into each performance. Everything from the beautiful makeup and costumes to the props(道具) and music was carefully chosen to convey a particular mood or theme. I studied the classical texts that formed the basis of the Kunqu opera, from the Song of the Pipa Player to The Peony Pavilion, working hard to understand the distinction of language and meaning within each work.
注意:
1、续写词数应为150左右;
2、请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Soon, I began to perform in small shows with my fellow classmates.
However, as my reputation grew, I desperately desired to share it with more people.

M: Could you clean and press these two shirts and repair a tear in this jacket I need them before 11 o’clock.
W: Well, I’m sure we can have the shirts ready, but unfortunately we won’t be able to get the jacket to you before tomorrow. All repairs have to be sent out of the hotel
2.
W: You’re nearly two hours late!
M: I’m very sorry. I should have been here at eight o’clock, but unfortunately I was held up on my way.
3.
M: You’ll never guess who I met at work today — Whitney Spearmint. She looked very beautiful!
W: I think it’s about time you stopped inventing stories about meeting pop stars, Martin. After all, you are nearly 30 and you work in a post office.
4.
W: Good afternoon, Paper Museum.
M: Hello, could you tell me your opening hours for Saturday
W: Yeah, we’re open from 10:00 in the morning to 5:00 in the afternoon.
M: Thanks.
5.
W: Have you tried playing City Driving yet
M: Yes, but I was a bit disappointed with it actually.
W: Me too. But the songs that play while you’re driving add to the action at least.
M: I only got to the fifth stage of the game. The racing itself was fairly exciting.
6~7.
M: Have you been to the new restaurant on the Kings Street
W: Yes, I guess it wasn’t too had
M: I thought the food was pretty good value at least.
W: It’s true they don’t charge too much.
M: The service was slow though when I went. The waiter had to apologize.
W: I don’t mind waiting when the food’s all freshly cooked. But it was quick enough when I went. That was just it — everything seemed to either be out of a tin or frozen food heated up in a microwave.
M: Such a shame, but you’re absolutely right — even if it isn’t an expensive place to eat.
8~9.
M: Hi. My watch has stopped and I need to replace the battery. Also I need a new watch band.
W: Well, we can replace the battery, but I’m not sure we have this model band in black. We can order one for you today. Are you in a hurry
M: I’m going out of town on Wednesday morning, so could I pick it up on Tuesday
W: Well, we can change the battery by this afternoon, but if you want us to replace the band, I’m afraid we wouldn’t have that until Thursday.
10~12.
M: Hi, Monica. What’s going on
W: Oh, my car’s having problems again. It’s starting to overheat whenever I’m in heavy traffic, and two days ago I had to pull off the expressway and wait until the engine cooled down.
M: What are you going to do
W: I really don’t know. I’ll have to figure out something; the bus service is terrible around where I live. Anyway, could I ask you a favor
M: Of course. What is it
W: You know, tomorrow’s Monday and we’re supposed to turn in our homework in English, but I’ve only gotten halfway through it. If I came over, would you help me finish it
M: Sure, actually I haven’t finished the homework either; I’ve just been putting it off, so it’s good. You’re coming ever.
13~16.
W: How would you describe Tom Lee, the young hero in The Tiger’s Apprentice
M: Tom is trying to find his place in the world as a hero. He wants to find his community and step into his fullest potential.
W: Which part of Tom resonates with you most
M: Tom’s story is not too different from mine. I’m Chinese-American. He grew up in Chinatown in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. I grew up in Chinatown in Los Angeles. So, I don’t have to dig too deep into my life to relate to Tom. And Tom is really good at trying to stay positive when situations are difficult. He uses his wits and a sense of humor to overcome hardships. Those are the things I can definitely relate to. In the beginning, Tom tries to deal with a lot of his obstacles with force. But later he learns to use his head a bit more. That’s something that I’ve developed as I’m getting older.
W: What’s the most valuable message you want kids to gain from this movie

Jacob Heil, a local college student, will climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, to honor his father. His father was diagnosed with cancer in 2001 and died just over a year ago. His father was a huge advocate of raising people’s awareness of the disease. Jacob had always been super close to him. Therefore, he hopes he can obey his father's will. His goal is to raise people’s awareness of cancer by climbing the highest mountains on each continent.
About 30,000 people a year attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. For Jacob, his biggest worry is the altitude of the mountain. To achieve his goal, he has been getting a lot of training by running. Although there are many unknown challenges, Jacob believes he will make it. Jacob always remembers his dad’s favorite quote, “Never give up.” He also does it as his father said. Jacob will try his best to support patients and families undergoing cancer treatments.

Dear David,
I present you with a Chinese knot in the shape of a diamond. It is made of red silk threads, cloth and other materials. The Chinese knot is a kind of traditional art. It shows Chinese people’s love for life and beauty. People use Chinese knots to decorate their houses or their clothes.
The reason why I choose it as a gift is that in China, it stands for friendship, love and good luck. I hope that the gift can not only bring you good luck but also remind you of our friendship and the cultural exchange.
Wish you all the best!
Yours sincerely
Li Hua

Soon, I began to perform in small shows with my fellow classmates. We would gather in a local community center or theater, dressing up in our brightly colored costumes and applying our makeup with care. I loved the feeling of stepping onto the stage in front of an audience. Every time we performed, I felt like my whole world sort of melt away and I was completely immersing myself in such an amazing opera. My voice was delicate and smooth, my movements and gestures elegant and fluent. Finally, my wonderful performances earned myself a reputation as a rising star in the Kunqu community. What a great privilege to show that I was part of a centuries-old tradition that had entertained viewers for generations!
However, as my reputation grew, I desperately desired to share it with more people. I started to look for opportunities to perform in a more public setting, volunteering at local festivals and cultural events. I spoke to audiences about the history of Kunqu and what it meant to me personally, hoping to inspire others to explore the art form for themselves. As I continued to spread the world about Kunqu, I found that my efforts were paying off. More and more people were becoming interested in this traditional Chinese art form, and I began receiving invitations to perform around the world. I traveled to cities in Europe, Asia, and North America, sharing the beauty of Kunqu with audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
