Once a trader wanted to sell some cheap but smelly seafood to my father, he said “No!”

Headphones are helpful. We use them to listen to music without
disturbing (打扰) others. Many kids use them in school. But headphones
can be harmful, too. They can cause hearing loss if the volume (音量 )
is too loud. Studies show that one out of every 10 kids in the United
States has some hearing loss. The cause is loud noise. headphones
How hearing works
There are cells (细胞) inside the ear that help you hear. They can only be
seen with a microscope. “We call them hair cells,” Jackie Clark said. “They
look like hairs standing up.” Clark is a professor at the University of Texas
at Dallas. She studies how loud noise affects our ears.
microscope Sound is invisible (看不见的). But it moves in waves. It makes the hair
cells move back and forth. Think of the wind in the leaves.
Loud noises can damage (损害,伤害) these cells. The cells scrape (刮擦,擦碰) against
the ear. This makes them twist (弯曲,变形). And once the cells are damaged, they don’t
grow back.
Protect your ears
One sign of hearing loss is tinnitus (耳鸣). It’s a ringing in the ears. flute
“It’s like someone is playing a note on the flute for a long time,” Clark
says. “There’s no getting rid of it.” And the damage affects more than
your ears. It can cause anxiety and stress.
How can you protect your ears Keep the volume on your
headphones low. You should be able to hear sounds around you. And
other people shouldn’t hear noise from your headphones. “If I can hear what you’re
listening to when you’re wearing your headphones,” Clark says, “it’s too loud.”
Sounds are measured in units called decibels (分贝 ). Raindrops are 30 decibels.
Fireworks are 140 decibels. What about your headphones Listening devices can go
higher than 100 decibels. That’s too loud. To protect your ears, keep your device at about
half volume. And don’t listen too long. About an hour a day is safe.

Learn to love who you are
Expect to be treated with kindness, respect and love from a good friend You
shouldn’t have to go far to find them. Start by being you own friend.
Loving yourself, also called self-love, means being as kind to yourself as you are to
others. Imagine your best friend is worried or upset, then think about how you’d support
him or her and try to make him or her better. Self-love means giving yourself the love,
care and respect you might give your friends and family. Becky Goddard-Hill is the
author of Create Your Own Confidence. He says self-love means valuing yourself at all
times. “It’s speaking to yourself with kindness and encouragement, and it means taking
really good care of your body and mind.”
Learning to love who you are strengthens (增强) your self-esteem (自尊). This makes
you believe in yourself and feel that you deserve (值得 ) good things― such as kind
friends and fun experiences. It doesn’t mean you’ll be happy all the time, but when you
do face challenges, they’ll be easier to overcome. Studies show that self-love can help
friendships, schoolwork and health. “There is always someone looking out for you,” says
Goddard-Hill, “because that person is you.”
Love yourself better. Start by being kind, especially if you make a mistake. Instead
of being angry, tell yourself that everyone gets things wrong sometimes. Then work out
what you could do differently next time. Try not to compare yourself to others and
remember that no one is perfect. Focus on (专 注于 ) yourself instead. Goddard-Hill
suggests writing down your advantages and asking your family and friends for their

thoughts. “Keep the list somewhere safe and look at it often to remind yourself you are
amazing,” she says. Before you go to bed, think about three things that went well for you
that day. “This will help you see the positives ( 积 极 的 方 面 ) in your life,” says
Goddard-Hill.
Give affirmations to yourself. Goddard-Hill suggests doing this three times every
morning to give yourself a boost (激励). Here are some ideas. Can you think of any more
● I like who I am.
● I can do this.
● I am a good friend.
Take time out for you. You can spend 15 minutes a day giving yourself the attention
you deserve, starting with:
● Listening to your favourite music.
● Going for a walk or bike ride.
● Cuddling (搂抱) your pet.
● Reading a book in bed.
30. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us
A. What self-love means. B. To be kind to yourself.
C. Why self-love matters. D. To give yourself love, care and respect.
31. What does the word “affirmations” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Strange ideas. B. Encouraging words.
C. Difficult questions. D. Discouraging thoughts.
32. According to the passage, which of the following is a way to take time out for
yourself
A. Watching TV all day. B. Helping others with their problems.
C. Talking to friends for hours. D. Enjoying light music before going to bed.

A. To help readers to focus on their advantages.
B. To tell readers how to improve their friendship.
C. To encourage readers to love and value themselves.

Yang Hao, a 32-year-old doctoral student, took a trip across China without the
Internet. For 134 days, he traveled to many places, reading 40 books and recording his
journey with two cameras. He used printed maps, paper money as well as bank cards, and
talked to strangers for information.
Once, Yang received a screen time notification (通知) from his phone, which showed
he was spending almost seven hours a day on his phone. Surprised by this, he decided to
put his studies on hold and travel without his phone or computer. He wanted to see what
life would be like without the Internet.
During his trip, Yang faced many problems, such as booking hotels and buying
tickets without a phone. He also wrote letters to his family and friends, instead of texting
messages. Though there were many difficulties, he learned a lot from the experience. He
began to enjoy the simple pleasure of life, like reading and writing. After the trip, Yang
said,“I realized that those 134 days were the most fulfilling, focused and productive (富有
成效的) period of my life.”
Yang’s story became popular online, leading to discussions about our dependence on
the Internet. Many people spoke highly of him and thought about their own use of phones.
Now, Yang keeps a degree of distance from the Internet, and does not have Wi-Fi
connected to his phone, or installed (安装) at home, and also cuts down his phone use to
90 minutes a day. He tries to finish all his work at his art studio.
Yang is now writing a book and making a film about his journey. He hopes to use
them to encourage others to think about their relationship with the Internet and to find a
balance (平衡) between the online world and real life.
