Unit 4 Body Language
What I hide by my language, my body utters. ——Roland Barthes
Listening to How Bodies Talk
People's interactions (合并) words with nonverbal language, and the latter is quite (truth) to the eye, (reveal) the information deeply (hide) at the bottom of their heart.
Nevertheless, it’s quite tricky to (掌握) body language since it varies from culture to culture. What’s appropriate to one culture might be (appropriate) to another. eye contact for an example——looking one’s eyes displays interest in some places (而) this is (反对) in Eastern countries. In Japan, to show respect for seniors during a conversation, (年幼者) should look down, but it is unlikely that a foreigner would cause (冒犯) by looking someone in the eye.
Even the gesture for “OK” differs from culture culture. In Japan, (应用) such a gesture refers to money. In France, however, if you come across a sign language (一模一样的) to this, it might be interpreted
the number “zero”. Attention! Avoid making this gesture in Brazil and Germany, as Brazilians and may find it
(polite) and rude.
(general) speaking, shaking heads means “no” while nodding means “yes”. By (compare), the same gesture has totally (相反的) references in Bulgaria and Southern Albania. Social distance and the way we act when meeting or (分别) also present (明显的) difference. For example, in France and Russia, people are (accustom) to kissing on the cheek. But in places people kiss on the cheek as a greeting, the kiss is sometimes an “air kiss”——there is no actual (肢体接触) between the lips and cheek——and it could cause problems if a real kiss is made. In more (保守的) cultures, people are in favour of shaking hands, bowing from (腰) or simply nodding the head.
Fortunately, human do have some (universal) agreed gesture meanings. If you place your hands together and rest them on the side of your head (同时) shutting your eyes, you are saying the nonverbal language “sleep”. If you move your hand (绕圈) over your stomach after a meal , the witness will know you are full.
Besides the meaning, gestures perform different functions. A smile can be powerful as it helps us
(克服) tough time and find friends in a world of strangers. We (带着) a smile to break down barriers, apologize, greet, ask for help or usher in a conversation.
Body Language in a Classroom
As an educator who has more than 40 students, I must have specialized skills in (观察) and understanding body language. Students tend to look up and make eye contact when they show great concentration in class. If they (前倾) and focus on me, I know what I am saying (make) them fascinated. However, when they have their head (low), it implies they are bored or sleepy. Even if some students pretend to look at the blackboard, their mind is wandering since their eyeballs (bare) move and the distant look on their faces tells me they are indeed (心不在焉的).
Daydreaming, staring out of the window or rolling eyes at the ceiling, these actions all signal they are
(distract) by something other learning. When students have their arms (cross) in front of their chests like they are (保卫) their bodies, they might be experiencing anxiety. If I put forward a question, some students may look (一边) or hide their faces behind their books to avoid (call) on. Sometimes, I need to carefully distinguish a student is afraid or in trouble. If I fail to notice the difference, the conflicts between students might (升级) and get more serious. That’s when I must interfere and inquire.
(ultimate), assisting every student to learn better is my duty. I can adjust my teaching activities in accordance their body language. I know when to intervene and when to talk to them (逐个地) so that I can bring the best out of them. If you want to be a good teacher, learn to (回应) body language properly!
