Lynda La Plante is the writer of Prime Suspect and the best-selling author of more than 40 books. Her new novel Hidden Killers is out now. She is talking about three books that deeply influenced her.
Wuthering Heights
By Emily Bronte
One night as a child, I walked quietly into the bathroom when I heard a voice calling, “Let me in; let me in!” along with a terrible knock on a window coming from my grandma’s room. Quite afraid, I cried, “Help me! Where’s the ghost(幽灵) ” Grandma looked up and said, “Don’t be silly; I’m listening to a story on the radio called Wuthering Heights.” I joined my grandma and realized then how you could take a story from a book and change it to a different medium(媒介).
The Water-Babies
By Charles Kingsley
This classic Victorian story caught my imagination(想象力) as a child. It made me consider the unfairness of life — why is one child sleeping in comfort and another forced to climb through a chimney(烟囱) I especially loved all the questions Tom asks on his adventures, many of which are about social unfairness. All my life I’ve asked questions too.
The Faerie Queene
By Edmund Spenser
I used to have problems reading — I was told I had “word blindness”. My mother gave me a copy of Spenser’s poem and said, “If you can learn some of this then you’ll be able to read anything.” I rose to the challenge. I learned it off by heart and was so proud of myself for keeping something that difficult in mind. Then I learned that I could learn words just as well as anyone.
21.How did Lynda first know about the story of Wuthering Heights
A.By reading a book borrowed from her grandma.
B.By listening to her grandma’s story.
C.By reading a ghost story.
D.By listening to it on the radio.
22.Which book made Lynda form the habit of asking questions
A.Hidden Killers. B.The Water-Babies.
C.Wuthering Heights. D.The Faerie Queene.
23.What change did Lynda show after reading The Faerie Queene
A.She found pleasure in writing poems.
B.She began to believe in herself.
C.She fell in love with poems.
D.She became word-smart.
B
The father of an 8-year-old boy says his son is now the youngest person to climb California’s El Capitan. After four days of guided climbing, Joe Baker and his son Sam reached the top of the cliff(悬 崖)face inside Yosemite National Park last week.
“We made it!” Joe said. “What an amazing week! I’m so proud of Sam. He completed the
youngest rope climbing of El Capitan! In a few years he might be back breaking more records.”
Rock climbing has been a favorite pastime for the Baker family. Though Sam’s mother didn’t join the climbing, she is also a crazy climber. The family set up a website to record Sam’s adventures and collect money to make films that inspire parents to adventure with their kids. Sam began training at least 18 months ago and did well in a test run. They began the climbing on October 25 and reached the top on 28. They made the journey with the help of two guides.
But their achievement has not been without controversy (争议): as the climbing made headlines around the world, some members of the Yosemite climbing community began to say publicly that what the pair had done was not actually called climbing. The Bakers used a technique known as “jugging” which needs using handheld devices to slide up a fixed rope that’s been placed by a guide, without touching the rock face.
Reaching the top can not be so simple. The climbing takes many days, which means carrying up all necessary food, water and other heavy equipment. It also involves setting up and sleeping on a small platform that’s suspended(悬) thousands of feet in the air. The rock face is very exposed, a term (术语)used to describe a place that’s steep(陡峭的)and unprotected.
24. What do we know about Sam from the first two paragraphs
A. He is the best climber in California.
B. He has been trained by his father.
C. He is the youngest climber reaching the top of El Capitan.
D. He is planning another mountain climbing with his father.
25. Why did the Bakers found a website
A. To record their happy life.
B. To encourage families to experience adventures.
C. To show off Sam’s climbing experience.
D. To advise parents to climb El Capitan with their kids.
26. What’s some members’ attitude to the achievement of Joe and Sam
A. Supportive. B. Inspiring . C.Helpful . D. Negative.
27. What can we learn about the climbing from the last paragraph
A. It is challenging and fun.
B. It needs some courage.
C. It requires high-tech equipment.
D. It affects most climbers’ sleep.
C
Have you ever found that you were able to sleep better with an air conditioner or fan running or perhaps with the sound of rain falling outside If so, then you’re already familiar with white noise.
White noise refers to a noise that has a mixture of all the audible (听得见的) frequencies that the human ear can detect. It is a combination of all the frequencies of sound played at once. It can cover the sounds of other noises because of its various frequencies, leading many people to experience its calming effects.
Studies have that listening to white noise positively found affects sleep. For example, people living in a high-noise area of New York City fell asleep faster and spent more of their time in bed asleep while listening to white noise. In another study, listening to white noise through headphones improved sleep quality for seriously ill patients in a loud hospital room. However, more research is needed to confirm whether the characteristics of white noise itself improve sleep or whether the sound primarily helps by covering background noise.
However, a recent analysis of multiple studies looking at white noise’s effect on sleep has produced mixed results. The researchers are doubtful about the quality of existing evidence and conclude that further research is necessary in order to widely recommend white noise as a sleep aid. They also note that in some instances, white noise can disturb a person’s sleep and may affect their hearing.
Despite that, researchers are still optimistic that the steady hum of white noise might reduce a sleeper’s sensitivity to unpredictable noises from the environment, such as transportation sounds like cars and planes, which are considered a major contributor to poor sleep.
28. Why does white noise have calming effects
A. It can absorb other noises.
B. It can help people sleep better.
C. It can be detected by human ears.
D. It can cover the sounds of other noises.
29. How does the author explain the benefits of white noise
A. By giving examples. B. By telling stories.
C. By asking questions. D. By making comparisons.
30. Which statement may researchers agree with according to the last two paragraphs
A. White noise should be strongly recommended as a sleep aid.
B. Harmful effects of white noise have become a major concern.
C. Poor sleep will make people sensitive to the unpredictable noises.
D. More researches are needed to confirm the effect of white noise on sleep.
31. Which of the following can be a suitable tile for the text
A. How Does White Noise Work B. Is White Noise Harmful in Any Way
C. Does White Noise Help You Sleep D. What Are the Benefits of White Noise
D
Some students get so nervous before a test. They do poorly even if they know the material. Sian Beilock, a professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers. The students start worrying about the results. And when they worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources (资源).
Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test.
The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short maths tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.
Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of J2% worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of 5%. Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams cither to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test. Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+, compared to a B- for those who did not.
“What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious, who’d done our writing intervention (干预), all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and performance. They were performing just as well as their classmates who don’t normally get nervous in these tests.”
But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.
32. What may the students start worrying about before an exam
A. Whether they can pass the exams.
B. What other students do during the test.
C. Whether they have remembered the materials.
D. What kind of problems they will meet on the test paper.
33. What is the solution developed by researchers
A. Asking the students to ignore the test.
B. Asking the students to focus on the test.
C. Asking the students to sit quietly before the test.
D. Asking the students to write about their worries before the test.
34. According to Professor Beilock, those who thought about things unrelated to the test ________.
A. became less nervous before the test
B. were better at controlling their feelings
C. did worse than those who wrote about their feelings
D. did better than those who wrote about their feelings
35. What can be learned from the last paragraph
A. Writing about our worries before an exam can work a bit
B. We can only write about our worries right before an exam.
C. The best place to write about our worries is in the test room.
D. It doesn’t matter where we write about our worries before an exam.

In a suburb of Los Angeles, a young boy named Trevor McKinney lived with his single mother, Arlene. Trevor was a thoughtful and compassionate child, always looking for ways to make a positive impact on those around him.
One day, Trevor’s social studies teacher, Mr. Simonet announced a unique project: To come up with an idea to change the world and put it into action. Trevor’s eyes lit up with excitement. He remembered a conversation with his mother about how small acts of kindness can ripple out and touch many lives. This sparked an idea in Trevor’s mind.
That evening, Trevor sat at the kitchen table, a pad of paper and a pencil in front of him. He sketched out his idea, drawing arrows and circles to represent how one act of kindness could lead to many more. He titled his project “Pay It Forward”. The concept was simple yet profound: Instead of paying back a favor, recipients of kindness should pay it forward to three other people.
At the suggestion of his Mom, Trevor started with small acts of kindness. He helped an elderly neighbor, Mrs. Johnson, carry her groceries up the stairs. Mrs. Johnson, touched by Trevor’s kindness, planted a flower garden in her yard, beautifying the neighborhood. Trevor also fixed a broken fence for his friend, Chris, whose family was struggling financially. Chris, inspired by Trevor’s act, volunteered at a local food bank, helping to distribute meals to the needy.
Each time Trevor performed an act of kindness, he asked the recipient to pay it forward to three others. The idea began to spread, and soon, more and more people were participating in Trevor’s Pay It Forward movement. Trevor kept a journal, documenting each act of kindness and the people it touched.
