When Helena Bonham Carter walked onto the set of 2012’s Dark Shadows movie, she had strong unpleasant smell of bourbon whiskey and cigarettes. Her character smoked and drank continuously, but Bonham Carter didn’t smoke or drink; she had simply worn perfume (香水) created specifically for her by perfumer Azzi Glasser.
Glasser has also fashioned a dark blend of foxglove, poison hemlock and belladonna for Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter films, a chocolate chili-scented perfume for the Red Queen character in Alice in Wonderland and what Glasser describes as a mixture of “old, cracked soap” for the role of Miss Havisham in 2012’s Great Expectations.
The perfumer believes that perfume helps to truly understand the most important part of a character. “We’ll meet up to talk about the role, the styling, who the director is, who the other actors are, the space, atmosphere, where they might be filming, whether it will be cold or hot. There are many necessary parts at play. I’ll then go and start testing and making slight changes until the perfume is absolutely perfect,” said Glasser who can spend anything from a week to three months to create a custom-made perfume.
Azzi believes that each place is unique, and her heightened sense of smell can pick up even the most unnoticeable notes to help her design the perfect smell to stress guests’ experience. She even created a perfume for her own home: “My kids’ friends love coming to our home. They often joke that they love the way they smell when leaving.”
“Having a perfume that is made especially for you, which you love and those around you enjoy and which creates a personal style and memories for years to come, is a kind of pleasure in life,” Glasser said. And the results last a lifetime — the idea is that this smell will become your signature (鲜明特色) for life. “The happiness that it brings to people when they have their own custom-made perfume for life — whether you are a top Hollywood actor, a model, an artist or the girl or boy next door — is a fantastic feeling for me to live with. I feel that I am adding some sort of value to people’s lives, which is one of the reasons why I love what I do and love the life I live.”
4. Why does the author mention Helena Bonham Carter in paragraph 1
A. To talk about the movie. B. To advertise the special perfume.
C. To lead in the perfumer. D. To show the harm of whiskey and cigarettes.
5. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. Different people the perfumer meets up.
B. Much effort the perfumer puts into making a perfume.
C. Considerable time spent in understanding the character.
D. Many important parts included in a custom-made perfume.
6. What do we know about Azzi Glasser
A. She believes the boy next door senses less happiness brought by perfume.
B. Her kid’s friends often buy custom-made perfume at her home.
C. Adding value to people’s lives is the most important reason why she loves her job.
D. The unnoticeable notes help her design the personalized smell to strengthen guests’ experience.
7. Which of the following best describes Azzi Glasser
A. Fashionable and loving. B. Creative and considerate.
C Responsible and professional. D. Consistent and proud.
C
Having friends is obviously good for countless reasons. And showing the world that you have lots of friends, for example on social media, seems like a winning strategy. If that is the truth, your goal is to expand your social network. Once people see how popular you are, they'll want to join that popular circle, perhaps in the hope that some of your popularity will rub off on them.
Nevertheless, can a person even have too many friends at the same time It’s always been a misconception that if you have more friends, people will be more likely to want to be friends you.
In fact, a new study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology shows that having too many friends may work against you. In a series of experiments. the authors prove that people usually prefer to befriend those who have fewer friends than they do, rather than those with more friends. The authors call this phenomenon the “friend-number paradox(悖论)”, which is also the title of their new paper.
Social ties are obviously important. Having more of these connections suggests greater social value, and more potential possibilities. So it seems reasonable to assume that people will focus their social energies on befriending people who have lots of friends already.
But the problem is that these social ties are only valuable if there’s reciprocity(互惠) involved. Friendship goes hand in hand with certain responsibilities and expectations. And people with lots of friends may not be able to fulfill those responsibilities—especially those with too many friends.
In other words, “friendship quality” matters as much, if not more, than only the number of friends you have. Having lots of friends means your precious social resources become dilute (稀释了的), making you less able to be a good friend. And other people take that into account consciously(有意识地)or unconsciously when deciding whether to befriend you. They don’t want to spend their valuable social resources on someone who is unlikely to pay it back.
8. What do the underlined words “rub off on” in paragraph l mean
A. Look forward to. B. Take control of.
C. Hold on to. D. Have an effect on.
9. What does the “friend-number paradox” show
A. The secrets to becoming popular.
B. The ways of winning more friends.
C. The advantages of having many friends.
D The problems with having many friends.
10. What does the author think of people with lots of friends
A. They may fail to perform their duties.
B. They don’t know about reciprocity.
C. They are more likely to be good friends.
D. They have more precious social resources.
11. What would be the best title for the text
A. How Do People Choose Their Friends
B. More Friends Are Not Necessarily Better
C. Why Do People Like Having More Friends
D. People With More Friends Are More Popular
D
Scientists have already established from multiple studies that Mars contains large amounts of water. Most of the water exists in the form of ice. Chinese researchers say they have built an artificial intelligence(AI) robot that can use materials found on Mars to produce catalysts (催化剂) to break down water and release oxygen. It could be another way for space travelers in the future to make much-needed oxygen on Mars.
Experiments were carried out on meteorites that either came from Mars or contained materials similar to the Martian surface. The “robot chemist” first used an acid and chemical mixture to separate and examine materials contained in the meteorites. It identified several different metallic elements and then worked to identify different molecules (分子) that could be produced from meteorite materials. The system found more than 3.7 million possible molecule combinations. The robot used that data to predict which catalysts would be able to split water molecules to produce oxygen. The catalyst chosen as the best fit was able to operate at minus 37 degrees Celsius. This temperature is similar to current conditions on Mars.
The study’s lead writer, Jun Jiang, said that as a boy, he often dreamed of being able to one day travel in space. “So when we finally saw that the catalysts made by the robot could actually produce oxygen by splitting water molecules. I felt like my dream was coming true. I even started to imagine that I, myself, will live on Mars in the future.”
A report explaining the study’s results notes Jiang suggests that for every square meter of Martian material, his group’s system could produce nearly 60 grams of oxygen per hour. The researchers say this level of production could remove the need for future astronauts to transport oxygen from Earth. “The robot can work continuously for years.” Jiang said.
Jiang said, “It could also be used to produce other useful catalysts on Mars. This could include processes for making substances to support the growth of plants that could be used to produce food for astronauts. Different chemicals can be made by this robot. Mars might also not be the only place where it could find other used, suggesting the moon as another possibility.”
12. What do Chinese scientists use AI robots to do in the research
A. To collect water data from Mars.
B. To produce oxygen from water on Mars.
C. To explore the ice coverage on Mars.
D. To assist humans in settling down on Mars.
13. Which aspect of the research does Paragraph 2 focus on
A. Its process. B. Its scale. C. Its result. D. Its effect.
14. Why does the author mention Jiang’s dream
A. To explain the chemical reaction. B. To advocate space travel.
C. To prove the success of the study. D. To show the future life on Mars.
15. What does Jiang stress in the last paragraph
A. The substances for growing plants on Mars.
B. The existence of oxygen on the moon.
C The possible discovery of chemicals on Mars.
D. The potential application of AI robots.

What to Do If Your Personal Data Has Been Exposed
As more of our lives move online, the risk of our personal data being stolen or misused is increasing. Online criminals can use stolen data to target people with leading messages to get important information. ____16____. Here are some ways to protect yourself.
Change your password
When your info shows up in a breach (泄露), it doesn’t mean someone’s stolen your identity or money. ____17____. If your data has been breached, the first thing you should do is change your password. Use a strong, long password including letters, numbers and symbols. And if you have been using the same password for different accounts, make changes to it for each site.
____18____
It can be hard to follow all the different data breaches. When public data breaches occur, cyber criminals gather as much data as possible so they can sell it on the dark web. Luckily, there are online services that you can look at to see if your account has been involved in a data breach. For example, a tool called Breach Watch is offered online to keep watch on the dark web to see if your personal information shows up there.
Tell your bank and credit agencies
If your credit card payment numbers are stolen, inform your bank or credit card company. Ask them to warn you of any suspicious activity. Some banks and credit cards can lock your account online. You can also inform credit agencies. ____19____. That makes it hard to see your credit report and open a new account. Or they will ask lenders to contact you before lending money.
Take extra care
Breaches involving a telephone company leave buyers at risk of having their phone numbers stolen. Thieves can use a stolen number to enter accounts that use the phone number as a security. To reduce that risk, it is advisable to create a password that is needed to make large account changes. ____20____. That will help block possible damage by someone who gains entry to your email account.
A. Keep monitoring
B. They can freeze your credit
C. But it does mean you’re at risk
D. Follow all the possible data breaches

It was a few days before Christmas many years ago and it looked like it would not be a happy one for my family, because we didn’t have much money.
My wife and I had managed to save some money to buy our young children some toys. We knew for sure that we could only afford to get one small gift for each of our children.
We arrived at the store and walked down the parking lot past people putting gifts into their cars. I saw the happiness on their faces and I heard them laughing and speaking happily but it sure didn’t feel like Christmas to me. We hurried into the store past old Tom, a beggar who had begged here for many years. To some extent, we had been “friends”. I had always enjoyed putting something in his cup before and he always held up his thumb (大拇指) to me. But today we passed him quickly with our heads down, pretending we didn’t see him even though I heard clearly he was saying hello to me. I knew I could not help others.
Thankfully, we were able to get our small children each something sweet that they would like after searching the store. We paid the bills for all the toys children selected. We found that we even had a few dollars left over.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为120个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
With those dollars left, we walked out of the store.

With those dollars left, we walked out of the store. I stopped in front of old Tom, saying Merry Christmas to him and dropped all those dollars into his kettle without any hesitation. Old Tom smiled at me. I didn’t have one dollar left. I even didn’t know how to deal with our dinner but it didn’t matter. I felt relieved, and I did feel like Christmas around me. “This is for your children! ” old Tom handed me something. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw what it was — an invitation to a famous restaurant on Christmas Eve. It invited many children to have dinner and to play games together. Of course, all free, including their parents. “One of the gifts I received, but you know I have no children, so it’s yours,” old Tom said gently. We had been told many times about the Christmas spirit: Christmas is giving and receiving in action, but until now, I know each time we give, each time we receive and it’s Christmas.
