Hi Sue,
I hope this email finds you well. I wanted to share a story from my “office” at the bottom of the sea to cheer
you up.
As a commercial diver performing underwater repairs, I wear a wet suit to work. To stay warm in the cool
water, we use an oil-powered industrial water heater that pumps warm water through a hose (软管) taped to the air
hose. I stick the hose down the back of my wet suit, which makes it feel like working comfortably.
Last week, everything was going smoothly until I started to itch (发痒). I scratched it, but that only made
things worse. Within seconds, my butt (屁股) started to burn. I pulled out the hose and realized that the hot water
machine had sucked up a jellyfish (水母) and pumped it directly into my suit.
The jellyfish couldn’t stick to my hairless back, but it did stick to the crack of my butt. When I scratched the
itch, I was actually grinding the jellyfish and its poisonous tentacles (触须) into my skin.
I informed the dive supervisor over the communicator, but he and the other divers were laughing too hard to
give clear instructions. I threw away the dive and had to make three painful stops before reaching the surface.
When I climbed out of the water, the laughing doctor handed me a tube of cream and told me to rub it on my butt.
The cream helped, but my butt was hurting for two days.
So, next time you’re having a bad day at work, remember that it could always be worse. You could have a
jellyfish on your butt!
Just repeat to yourself, “I love my job, I love my job, I love my job.” And whenever you have a bad day, ask
yourself if it’s a jellyfish bad day. May you never have a jellyfish bad day.
Take care,
Rob

In July 2024, 77 pilot whales (巨头鲸) washed up on a beach in Orkney, Scotland. It was the largest mass
stranding (搁浅) of whales in Scotland for decades. Scientists don’t know exactly why whales beach themselves.
One theory is that climate change is driving whales’ food closer to the shoreline, where they then get stuck as the
tide goes out. If a single animal is found, it is usually because it is sick or has been injured.
In the Orkney stranding, 12 of the whales were still alive when they became beached. When this happens,
marine organisations assess whether a whale can be safely refloated. Professionals and members of the community
often come together, cover the animal in wet sheets and pour buckets of water over it, until the animal drifts back
out to the ocean. Though it’s not always a happy ending.
For those that don’t survive, an examination is often carried out. Dr. Brownlow of the Scottish Marine Animal
Scheme told the BBC that these can reveal a lot about the whale’s life and the reasons why it was beached. In 2024,
a very rare species of whale turned up on a beach in New Zealand—a spade-toothed whale. While this is sad, the
body was dissected (解剖) in order to help researchers acquire new information about the species. “From a scientific
and conservation point of view, this is huge”, Gabe Davies, a Department of Conservation official, said.
Some beached whales who don’t survive have their skeletons sent to museums, while many others are returned
to the water. This ensures the marine environment benefits because whale bodies give off many nutrients. “When
they fall and die and sink to the bottom of the ocean, they form these little nutrient-rich islands that can support a
huge diversity of life”, says Dr. Brownlow. The more research that can be done, the better. For now, we can only do
what we can to keep our oceans clean and safe.

If you’re a sports fan, you may be familiar with the emotional rollercoaster (过山车) that comes with sports
watching. Whether you’re part of a noisy crowd in a stadium, or just watching at home on TV, it’s easy to get
caught up in the highs and the lows when you celebrate or feel sorry for your favourite team or athlete. Those
feelings are so strong, in fact, that a study from Croatia, published in PubMed, showed that the emotional stress
during a football match increased the risk of a cardiovascular (心血管的) incident. But can watching sports be good
for you too
The evidence suggests that people who watch live sporting events experience greater wellbeing (健康) than
those who don’t. A study published in Public Health in the UK, found sports spectators felt less lonely and had
higher scores for life satisfaction. Lead author Helen Keys said in a press release, “Watching live sport of all types
provides many opportunities for social interaction and this helps to form group identity and belonging.” She says
this then reduces loneliness and boosts wellbeing.
But, if for any reason you aren’t keen on going to live events, don’t worry! Watching sports on TV or on the
internet may also have positive effects, according to a 2021 study by Tsuji and colleagues. They found that older
adults who watched sports were less likely to have depressive symptoms than those who didn’t. On top of that, the
sports spectators tended to have richer social networks than non-spectators. The authors suggest that the social
networks you gain through watching sports may lower the risk of depressive symptoms.
So, the cheers at a live sports event or even casual small talk with friends about your favourite team can bring a
sense of camaraderie (情谊) and may reduce loneliness and depression. It seems the health benefits of sports are not
limited to physical activity through participation in them, but that we can make gains in our general wellbeing
through social bonding.
33.What is the purpose of paragraph 1?
A. To share background information. B. To introduce the topic of the text.
C. To present a newly discovered idea. D. To encourage watching sports.
34.What did the study from Croatia indicate about emotional stress

A. Increased anxiety. B. Higher life satisfaction.
C. Lower social interaction. D. More depressive symptoms.
36.What did the study by Tsuji find about watching sports
A. It leads to richer social networks. B. It increases the risk of depressive symptoms.
C. It is more beneficial for younger adults. D. It has no effect on mental health.
37.The passage is developed by __________.
A. telling stories B. following space order

Imagine a future where we can eat meat, but no animals have been killed in the process. 16% of the UK
population enjoy a meat-free diet, according to statistics website . It seems there is an appeal in
lab-grown meat as an alternative to traditional meat consumption. 38 Why
One of the biggest reasons is cost. The first ever lab-grown hamburger was shown in 2013 by Dutch scientist
Mark Post. It was created from beef cells and cost more than $300,000. Lab-grown meat production stretches from
thousands to hundreds of thousands of US dollars per ounce—that’s the weight of about two chicken nuggets (炸鸡
块). 39 They “feed” the cells—a combination of sugar, proteins and other nutrients are added to the cells.
In 2023, US-based company Upside Foods received approval from the US Department of Agriculture and the
Food and Drug Administration to start selling lab-grown meat. 40 So they can price it fairly compared to
traditional meat. An investor in Upside Food, Lisa Feria, told Forbes magazine “Profitability is very much years off
because the biggest challenge ahead of them is whether we can make it at millions of tons a year and eventurally
compete with conventional meat”.
41 A 2023 study by the University of California found that the process of producing lab-grown meat
could have a 4 to 25 times higher impact on global warming than beef, which is generally the highest-polluting
meat. This is mostly because of the emissions (排放) needed to create “feed”.
So, it seems unlikely that we’ll be eating lab-grown meat just yet. 42
A. There are also environmental costs.
B. Or maybe we possibly never will eat it.
C. Another reason is the traditional concept.
D. This expense is partly due to the cost of raw materials.
E. Besides, more and more people expect to buy lab-grown meat.
F. But, despite years of expectation, this futuristic food is still not on our plates.
G. In order to do this, the company has had to take on significant economic losses.

If you fancy coming to visit China this summer under the 72-hour or 144-hour visa-free
policy, here are destinations for you to explore the country’s natural beauty and culture while escaping the
heat.
Also, immerse yourself in the city’s rich beer culture by drinking the famous Tsingtao beer and
exploring its brewing history at the Tsingtao Beer Museum,其意思是“通过喝著名的青岛啤酒和在青岛啤酒
Hiking enthusiasts and natural history lovers should go to Fanjing Mountain, a UNESCO
World Heritage Site.
I pulled out the hose and realized that the hot water machine had sucked up a jellyfish and
pumped it directly into my suit.”
I informed the dive supervisor over the communicator, but he and the other divers were
laughing too hard to give clear instructions.”
The jellyfish couldn’t stick to my hairless back, but it did stick to the crack of my butt. When I
scratched the itch, I was actually grinding the jellyfish and its poisonous tentacles into my skin. stick to,
So, next time you’re having a bad day at work, remember that it could always be worse. You
could have a jellyfish on your butt!”
One theory is that climate change is driving whales’ food closer to the shoreline, where they
then get stuck as the tide goes out.”
Professionals and members of the community often come together, cover the animal in wet
sheets and pour buckets of water over it, until the animal drifts back out to the ocean”,而第 3段又提到“For
those that don’t survive, an examination is often carried out”,第二段中划线的句子是“Though it’s not always
This ensures the marine environment benefits because whale bodies give off many nutrients”,
When they fall and die
and sink to the bottom of the ocean, they form these little nutrient-rich islands that can support a huge
32.A 选项的意思是“海洋动物的问题”。文章主要讲的是搁浅的鲸鱼而不是所有海洋动物问题,因此 A 可排除;
But can watching sports be good for you too 引出文章的话题。第一段提到“If you’re
a sports fan, you may be familiar with the emotional rollercoaster (过山车) that comes with sports watching”,
Those feelings are so strong, in fact, that a study from Croatia, published in PubMed,
showed that the emotional stress during a football match increased the risk of a cardiovascular incident.”,其意
A study published in Public Health in the UK, found sports spectators felt less lonely
and had higher scores for life satisfaction.”
The authors suggest that the social networks you gain through watching sports may
lower the risk of depressive symptoms.”
It seems there is an appeal in lab-grown meat as an alternative to traditional meat
F 项“But, despite years of expectation, this futuristic food is still not on our plates”中的“this futuristic
Lab-grown meat production stretches from thousands to hundreds of thousands of US
空格后一句提到“They ‘feed’ the cells—a
combination of sugar, proteins and other nutrients are added to the cells”,说明这些成本中包括了给细胞
D 项“This expense is partly due to the cost of raw materials”中的“This expense”
In 2023, US-based company Upside Foods received approval from the US Department of
Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration to start selling lab-grown meat”,说明 Upside Foods 公司
So they can price it fairly compared to traditional
G 项“In order to do this, the company has had to take on
significant economic losses”中的“this”指的就是前文提到的公平定价,而“the company has had to take on
A 2023 study by the University of California found that the process of producing lab-grown
meat could have a 4 to 25 times higher impact on global warming than beef”,说明实验室培育肉类的生产过
A 项“There are also environmental costs”中的“also”表明除了
42. 空格前一句提到“So, it seems unlikely that we’ll be eating lab-grown meat just yet”,说明我们似乎不太可能
B 项“Or maybe we possibly never will eat it”中的“never”与空格前一句中的
A 项的“death”(死
67.介词短语,be far from 不是,所以答案是 from。

W: At the 2012 Summer Olympics, Ye Shiwen won gold medals in both the 200-meter and 400-meter events,
setting the world record in the 400-meter event. Now, let’s learn more about this record-breaking teenager.
Ye started swimming at the age of 6 after her kindergarten teacher noticed she had large hands and feet. After
five years of training, she became a good swimmer in all four major swimming events. Ye joined the Zhejiang
provincial swimming team in 2007 and China’s national team the year after. Ye arrived on the world stage in 2010,
winning a pair of gold medals at the Asian Games and two silvers at the World Swimming Championships in Dubai.
Ye’s coaches say that her success comes from a particularly good combination of her power and weight. At the
2012 Summer Olympics, when she won the gold medal in the 400-meter race, she broke the world record with a
time of 4 minutes and 28.43 seconds. She swam the last 50 meters in 28.93 seconds, which was faster than Ryan
Lochte, the winner of the men’s event, who swam it in 29.10. Ye Shiwen’s overall time was still about 23 seconds
slower than Ryan Lochte’s, but more importantly, she improved her personal best time by 3 seconds.(停 20 秒)
