On a clear sunny day on the Georgia coast, ecotour guide Rene Heidt leads her guests on her boat through a narrow waterway. Unbroken grasses reach overhead, and there’s no building, power line, or cell tower in sight. It’s a perfect location for visitors to view a nearby mudflat (泥滩), where roughly300,000 shorebirds, including the roseate spoonbill and the whimbrel, come to eat, rest, and nest every year.
Heidt has had a 15-year career as an ecotour guide and much of what she shares on the tours comes from her experiences. But more recently, the University of Georgia’s Coastal Awareness and Responsible Ecotourism (CARE) certification (认证) program has been designed to support ecotour guides like Heidt, helping improve the information they share with tourists. The program offers up-to-date educational material and training to ecotour guides and provides certification that confirms their devotion to preserving the habitats.
While providing knowledge about Georgia’s natural resources, the CARE program also discusses how to visit
some sensitive areas responsibly. Now, when Heidt gives boating tours, she rows with a light touch, moving almost silently across the water. When she shares facts about wildlife with her guests, she doesn’t speak louder than whispers. Actually, it’s a skill Heidt must have perfected in her previous career. “The program changes the way I give tours. It helps me to be more mindful of a boat’s influence on the very thing we are trying to teach people about,” she recalled.
Getting trained through the CARE program also benefits Heidt’s business. According to Heidt, the program allows her to learn more about this environment. And that’s knowledge she passes along to her guests. “It’s a fantastic coast,” she says. “And it’s important to share its beauty with others to help them realize that it is worth protecting.”
4. Why was the CARE program launched
A. To offer the latest tour news. B. To qualify and recognize ecotour guides.
C. To give aid to local education. D. To share and publicize travel experience.
5. What may be the suggestion from the CARE program for visiting sensitive areas
A. Reasonably arrange travel routes. B. Save as much wildlife as possible.
C. Leave as little impact as possible. D. Fully respect local cultural customs.
6. What is Heidt’s attitude towards the CARE program
A. Doubtful. B. Tolerant. C. Uncertain. D. Favorable.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Tending to Sensitive Coastal Areas B. Reaching out to Ecotourism Supporters
C. Backing up Ecotourism in Georgia D. Initiating a CARE Certification Journey
C
Are you an open book, your face broadcasting every passing emotion, or more of a poker face, not showing what you are feeling Scientists at Nottingham Trent University say that wearing your heart on your face, could actually give you a significant social advantage.
The study, led by Eithne Kavanagh, a research fellow at NTU’s School of Social Sciences, involving over 1,300 participants, noticed striking variations in how much people moved their faces during conversations. Importantly, this expressiveness emerged as a stable individual quality. People displayed similar levels of facial expressiveness across different contexts, with different social partners, and even over time periods up to four months.
The researchers say that facial expressiveness is linked to personality, with more agreeable individuals displaying more lively faces. Facial expressiveness can also translate into concrete social benefits. In a negotiation
task, more expressive individuals are more likely to secure a larger slice of a reward. The researchers suggest that for agreeable folks, dynamic facial expressions may serve as a tool for building good relationship and smoothing over conflicts. Across the board, the results point to facial expressiveness serving an“ affiliative (亲和) function,” or a social glue that develops liking and smoother interactions.
Expressiveness is also linked to being seen as more “readable,” suggesting that a lively face makes one’s intentions and mental states easier for others to decipher. Beyond frequency of facial movements, people who employ facial expressions more strategically to suit social goals, such as looking friendly in a greeting, are also more well- liked.
The findings challenge the “poker face” common belief that a still and unemotional appearance is always most advantageous. Instead, they suggest that for most people, allowing one’s face to mirror inner states and intentions can invite warmer reactions. As the researchers conclude, “Being facially expressive is socially advantageous.” So, the next time you catch yourself making lines on your forehead, or flashing a smile, know that your face just might be working overtime on your behalf.
8. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about concerning the study
A. Its impact. B. Its findings. C. Its limitations. D. Its significance.
9 What may facial expressiveness serve as in negotiation settings
A. A way to frighten competitors.
B. A method to hide personalities.
C. A tool to show personal quality.
D. A strategy to settle disagreement.
10. What does the underlined word “decipher” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Copy. B. Overlook. C. Remember D. Interpret.
11. What may the author advise based on the findings of the study
A. Always wearing a still face. B. Learning to be an open book.
C. Speaking out inner emotions. D. Forcing a smile through tears.
D
A man in a lab coat bends under a dim light with tight eyes looking at a microscope. Time is short, the pays-off are high, and only this scientist can save everyone. That kind of romanticized picture of science was standard for a long time. But it’s far from the truth.
Some scientists search for the causes of some observable effects, such as the link between destroyed forests and Earth’s temperature increase. Others may investigate the “what” rather than the “why” of things. For example, ecologists build models to estimate gray wolf abundance in Montana, US. It’s impractical to spot them all and count them. Abundance models are not 100 percent accurate, but they offer estimates that seem good enough to set harvesting quotas (限额) and maintain the ecosystem.
Beyond the “what” and the “why”, scientists may focus on the “how”. For instance, the lives of people living with illnesses can be improved by research on how to relieve symptoms, even if the true causes of their disorders are largely unknown to current medicine.
People often think “real science” should provide definite, complete and perfect answers to their questions. However, given various limitations and the world’s complexity, keeping multiple perspectives in play is often the best way for scientists to reach their goals and solve the problems at hand.
In the world of science, healthy disagreement is a feature, not a bug. Science is a social process in which the community’s scrutiny (监督) ensures we have the best available knowledge. “Best available” does not mean “definitive”, but the best we have until we find out how to improve it.
The long history of atomism (原子论) shows how science is a process rather than a fast delivery of results set in stone. As scientist Jean Baptiste Perrin conducted his 1908 experiments that seemingly settled all discussion regarding atoms, questions about the atom’s properties were about to spark decades of controversy with the birth of quantum (量子) physics. Similar discussions continue to the present day.
So, real science is a collective, imperfect and may-sided process in which scientists contribute multiple and often partial solutions to complex and diverse problems.
12. How does the author introduce the topic of the article
A. By describing a scientific research process.
B. By telling a scientist’s personal experience.
C. By giving an example of scientific failure.
D. By presenting a common misconception.
13. What do paragraphs 2-3 mainly talk about
A. The challenges faced by scientists.
B. The history of scientific research.
C. The methods scientists use to share results.
D. The various focuses of scientists in their research.
14. What is the author’s view on healthy disagreements in science
A. They are essential for scientific progress.
B. They create confusion and delay conclusions.
C. They indicate problems in scientific methods.
D. They often lead to the rejection of old theories.
15. Why does the author mention Jean Baptiste Perrin’s experiments and the subsequent debate
A. To show science is a collection of facts.
B. To prove scientific knowledge is always absolute.
C. To illustrate science is a dynamic and evolving process.
D. To show scientific conclusion can be reached after discussion.

The year 2013 marked a turning point in my life. In June, my husband was offered a new Job in Ghana. Feeling that I had hit a career bottleneck as a photographer and copywriter (广告文字撰写人), I, without any hesitation, made the decision to relocate with him.
While my husband engaged in work, my visa didn’t grant me the same privilege. But that’s okay. I didn’t know what to do anyway. I was left isolated, homesick and lacking purpose. Our new home was a bungalow near a river that cut across expansive grasslands. With few people around our home, I turned to nature, which had been a fondness of mine since childhood. Every day, I would take my camera and wander around, photographing aimlessly.
It wasn’t long before September arrived, bringing the full flow of the rainy season. After one particularly bad thunderstorm, I found a finch (雀) — a poor little thing barely a month old with one wing broken — on the ground. Evidently, he had been abandoned by his flock, his nest blown from a tree. The sight was heartbreaking. He was the
size of my lite finger. His eyes were tightly shut and he was shuddering, too young to survive alone. I somehow felt a connection with it. Immediately I scooped him up and cautiously placed him in a cardboard box with towels, mimicking a nest, and stayed up all night researching how to care for him.
The next day, he seemed to regain some energy. He woke with his mouth open, though still too weak to let out a call. I fed him some food and chirped (叽喳) at him. To my amusement, he chirped back and even climbed into my hand. I affectionately gazed at this adorable creature, who was now boldly pecking (啄) my fingers now and then. A surge of warmth ran through me. Tenderly stroking his feathers, I chirped a lullaby, singing him to sleep. Gradually, his eyes drooped and he drifted off. I couldn’t help but chuckle at the scene — as far as he was concerned, I was his mother.
Para 1. “I will take care of you.” I murmured, making my promise to him.

Para 2. At that moment I realized that as I dedicated myself to the finch’s care, something within me changed.

【答案】Dear Terry,
Last Friday, our school held a fun sports day, which was an exciting event for everyone. We took part in various games such as sack races, three-legged races, and tug-of-war. It was a day filled with laughter and teamwork, as students from different grades teamed up to compete.
I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the chance to bond with my classmates. Winning the sack race was a highlight for me! More importantly, I learned the value of cooperation and sportsmanship. It was great to see everyone cheering for each other, regardless of who won or lost.
I hope you can experience something similar in New Zealand!
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】“I will take care of you.” I murmured, making my promise to him. The bond between us grew stronger with each passing day. I named him Sunny, as his bright yellow feathers brought a ray of sunshine into my life. Sunny became my constant companion, and I poured all my love and attention into nurturing him back to health. I researched tirelessly, learning about finch behavior, diet, and habitat. Every moment spent with Sunny was a precious gift, and I found purpose in providing him with the care and love he needed.
At that moment, I realized that as I dedicated myself to the finch's care, something within me changed. I discovered a newfound sense of fulfillment and purpose that had been missing from my life for so long. As I watched him grow stronger, his broken wing healing, I felt a renewed sense of hope and joy. The experience of nursing Sunny back to health inspired within me a desire to make a difference in the lives of animals and share their stories through my photography.
