At 2.4 meters tall, Canadian Olivier Rioux has a place in the Guinness World Records as the world’s tallest living teenager. Soon, he will make basketball history when he plays for the University of Florida.
Known as “Oli,” he will become the tallest person to play college basketball. Rioux is about 5 centimeters taller than former professional basketball players in the National Basketball Association (NBA) like Gheorghe Muresan and Manute Bol. And he is nearly 8 centimeters taller than former NBA player Yao Ming of China.
When he walks from his college housing to classes at the University of Florida, Rioux stops a lot—sometimes hundreds of times a day—to take pictures with people. Rioux actually enjoys it. He welcomes the looks, the questions and all the picture requests.
“It’s really strange to look up to someone,” said teammate Micah Handlogten, who is 2.2 meters tall. “People used to ask me, ‘You’re so tall. Do you play basketball ’ No one says a word to me now. Everyone just looks at him. It’s kind of crazy. He doesn’t shy away from it,” he added.
Rioux has worked hard to prepare for college basketball at the top level. The team expects Rioux to be a fan favorite. Coach Todd Golden said, “About 95 percent of my conversations with people about our team are about him. This is our first time on the list since 2019 and it’s like, ‘Hey, Coach, we’re really excited to see Oli out there this year.’ And I got it, man. He’s a very unique person.”
Rioux started playing basketball at age 5. But he is still learning the game at the college level. He can dunk (灌篮) the ball in the basket without jumping. He wears No. 32 because of his love for former NBA greats Magic Johnson and Shaquille O’Neal, another 2-meter-tall player.
24. Why are the three former NBA players mentioned in paragraph 2
A. To stress the outstanding height of Rioux.
B. To show that Rioux has played in the NBA before.
C. To present that Rioux plays basketball with great skill.
D. To explain the strength of tall people in playing basketball.
25. What does Rioux stop to do on his way to classes
A. Joke with his classmates. B. Say hello to his teacher.
C. Take photos with people. D. Play basketball with his friends.
26. What do Micah Handlogten’s words mean
A. Rioux is popular in college. B. Rioux should get on well with others.
C. He is troubled by some questions. D. People are crazy about basketball.
27. Which words can best describe Rioux
A. Creative and easy-going. B. Shy and responsible.
C. Confident and hard-working. D. Caring and humorous.

New research says that 610 bird species (物种) have died out over the past 130,000 years.
Bird species are of great importance to the environment. When a bird species disappears, nothing remains to do its job. These important jobs include carrying seeds (种子) to different places, eating insects, or eating dead animals.
By eating fruits and then moving around, birds will disperse the seeds of the plants the fruits belong to. The shortage of these birds can have other effects. Many areas now have many at-risk tree-species.
The loss of living areas for birds can have big effects considering the limited (有限的) area. Many island birds are flightless, meaning they cannot fly away to avoid danger. As a result, flightless birds are easily hurt by new predators, such as rats or cats.
Human hunting (捕猎) of birds was a big reason behind the disappearance of different bird species in the past. Bird hunting remains a big problem in some areas. Catching birds for the trade is a big problem, particularly in Southeast Asia.
Many birds have been lost over time. The large flightless “elephant birds” were native to Madagascar. The bird is believed to have disappeared after people arrived. It was about 3 meters tall and was possibly the largest bird that ever appeared. North America’s passenger pigeon numbered in the billions but was hunted to extinction (灭绝).
However, the number 610 doesn’t exactly reflect bird extinction. This is because of a shortage of information from some areas and the fact that some lost species may not have left behind bones or other things.
The majority of extinction over the last 50,000 years is caused by human activities. Each lost species is like cutting off a branch from the tree of life. “There are about 11000 bird species now. More than 1,000 species will go extinct in the next 200 years, faster than the extinction over the past 130,000 years,” says Tom Matthews of the University of Birmingham in England.
28. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The eating habits of bird species.
B. The important roles bird species play.
C. The reasons why bird species go extinct.
D. The bad living conditions bird species face.
29. What does the underlined word “disperse” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Store. B. Spread. C. Choose. D. Taste.
30. What do elephant birds and North America’s passenger pigeon have in common
A. They used to be the largest birds.
B. They were ancient flightless birds.
C. They lived in limited areas of islands.
D. They died out because of human activities.
31. What can we learn from Tom Matthews’s words
A. The number of bird species is on the increase.
B. Many bird species became extinct in the past.
C. Bird extinction will speed up in the future.
D. The richness of bird species is important.

Researchers in Australia are using a robot powered by artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the way farmers raise cows: The robot has four wheels and is painted red. Researchers have named the robot SwagBot. It can drive by itself and move cows from one field to another based on the condition of the soil and plant life.
Researchers said SwagBot is becoming the world’s first “smart cow.” They believe it can make cow farming more efficient (高效的) and put less pressure on the environment.
SwagBot was first put into use in 2016. At that time, it could only move around fields where cows were eating grass. Over time, scientists have added sensors (传感器) and AI systems to the robot. These systems help SwagBot judge the health, type, and thickness of grasses and plants in fields and observe the health of the cow.
The robot uses this information to move cows to the best, areas for eating grass. The goal to move cows to a new grass area before they can damage (毁坏) the grass in a particular field. This can prevent damage to the soil. The robot can, also send the information back to farmers.
Australia is one of the world’s biggest exporters (出口商) of beef. It has around 30 million cows spreading across large areas that are often dry. As a result, some grass areas are of low quality and do not have a lot of grass.
Farmers carefully assess how many animals their land can support. However, many farmers have little control over where the animals eat grass within large areas of land. Overeating can lead to poor soil that supports plant and animal life.
SwagBot is still in development. It is part of a growing movement in agriculture towards robotics. Farming experts hope robots can make production more efficient. Robots can also reduce the need for workers in places, like Australia, where finding workers in areas with a low population can be difficult.
32. What about SwagBot does the author want to tell us in paragraph 3
A. Its special appearance. B. Its cost.
C. Its continuous improvement. D. Its influence.
33. What’s the purpose in using the robot to manage cows
A. To bring comfort to cows.
B. To control the number of cows.
C. To prevent other animals attacking cows.
D. To avoid having harmful effect on grassland.
34. What may be the future of agriculture in Australia
A. It will introduce more robots.
B. It will increase the areas for raising cows.
C. Fewer people will depend on agriculture for a living.
D. Traditional methods will be used to check cows’ health.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Australia’s Grassland Is in Danger
B. Robot Leads Cows to Greener Fields
C. Science Is Changing the Cow Industry
D. Australia Is One of the Biggest Beef Exporters

Over the past 20 years, injuries related to dog walking have been on the rise among adults and children in the U.S. The followings are some ways you can use to protect yourself.
Safe dog walking includes careful attention and, in some cases, special tools. That can be especially true in bad weather conditions. However, doing several tasks at the same time can be dangerous. 36
Running with a leashed (被拴住的) dog is another risk no matter how well trained you think your dog is. The activity is especially dangerous with a dog that is easily surprised or very young. Once a man was walking his 30-kilogram dog in a park near his home when a large bird made a noise. 37 That pulled him off the sidewalk.
38 In this case, you have to share the road with vehicles (车辆). That is especially dangerous in the evening when you wear dark clothes with no reflectors or lights and your dog also does not have such protection.
If you have problems in balancing or moving around, experts suggest asking for help, especially in bad weather. 39 Besides, balance and strength-training exercises can help reduce the risk of falls and broken bones. Therefore, any exercise to give strength, or give balance, is going to help.
Even young, healthy, strong people may have difficulty controlling larger dogs that aren’t used to walking on a rope. 40 The trainer can read your dog’s body language better.
A. Some areas have roads without sidewalks.
B. Don’t play with a mobile phone while walking a dog.
C. Helpers can include a neighbor, or an older child.
D. His dog did what dogs often do and ran after the bird.
E. Make sure you can control the dog that you are walking.
F. So working with a dog trainer helps both you and your dog.
G. Many people might receive treatment at other places for their injuries.

In 1949, the first seed of New China 56 (plant) and soon it came out. A group of villagers gathered around the small tree 57 (celebrate) the birth of the nation.
As the tree grew, so did the strength of the nation. China’s entry into the World Trade Organization in 2001 strengthened 58 (it) connection with the global economy. In 2008, the Beijing Olympics was 59 moment of national pride, drawing worldwide attention to the country’s progress.
In the 2010s, the tree grew even taller, surrounded by more trees, which showed China focused 60 environmental sustainability (持续性). Green policy made sure that the tree, like China, would continue to grow and succeed. The Belt and Road Initiative brought new global businesses, further 61 (increase) the country’s influence.
As the tree’s branches (树枝) housed more birds, the nation reached new heights of success. By 2020, China had removed absolute poverty (贫穷), a success 62 benefited millions. Fast growing numbers of electric vehicles run on the road and the C919 airplane flies overhead, which marks China’s cutting-edge technology.
Today, the tree stands much taller. As China continues to grow and succeed, its people—like branches and 63 (leaf)—move forward with strength and unity, shaping a 64 (hope) future. I was a young man finishing up my teaching degree at college. One day, I was driving to a high school to do my teaching practice in my 20-year-old car. It was not too much to say that it was a piece of rubbish. It had broken down several times and every time my dad fixed it. Still, it burned oil, backfired, and got about 5 miles on a gallon of gas. It had also had flat tires more than once so I had some repair tools and a spare tire in my trunk (后备箱). It was all I could afford, though, hoping that it would last one more day.
As I drove down the way to the school, I noticed something up ahead on the other side of the road. It was a car parked to the side. As I got closer, I noticed that it had a flat tire. An elderly lady was standing next to it, not knowing what to do.
I knew I would be late for class but decided to turn at the next exit, head back to her, and help It took about five minutes but I made the turn. I was almost back when I saw two pick-up trucks parked in front and back of the car.
A man in a blue shirt was already jacking (顶起) up the car while another strong-looking man was talking to the elderly lady and holding her hand like he were her own grandson. I slowed, pulled up, and asked if they needed any help. The lady said, “No, thanks, dear. These wonderful gentlemen are taking care of it.”
I was touched by the two men. I stopped the car and went out to show my respect for them. They told me they were Mike and Peter, and that they were “Rescue (救援) on Road” members whose main task was to repair broken-down vehicles on the road and help drivers in trouble. After the simple chat, I continued to drive to the high school.
