Deep in the Malaysian jungle there is a wild place called Taman Negara, which is accessible only by boat. It is home to wild species such as tigers, clouded leopards, black panthers, cobras and men with blowpipes and poison darts. I decided to give it a try last month.
I’d wanted to report on this region for a long time. This is a land of superlatives and statistical extremes. It is the largest national park in Southeast Asia in the middle of West Malaysia, a country that is well known for its rich and diverse wildlife.
The park was created in 1939 by the British King George V and yet it is virtually unknown to future generations of his subjects. The British tend to head for Sarawak and Borneo, perhaps because these places sound as if they’re very wild. But Taman Negara is wilder and older. It dates back more than 130 million years. And Malaysia is a lucky country and well managed. Its population density (密度) is much lower than that of those countries that surround it. And there’s an environmentally friendly culture, which has prevented the terrible over-development you see in Thailand or Bali.
To fully appreciate the beauty of Taman Negara, what you really need to do is get away and distance yourself from the crowds of tourists and allow yourself to become enchanted by the quiet and peaceful atmosphere. So pay a boatman to take you far away. Sit on a sandbank miles upstream and wait for the wildlife to come to you. Just sit and wait. Always the rule. And take with you a wonderful nature guide: Taman Negara by David Bowden is superb.
24. What is the author most probably
A. An environment activist. B. A travel writer.
C. A tour guide. D. A wildlife biologist.
25. What does the author say about Taman Negara
A. It’s a popular holiday destination with British people.

C. It began to exist before many other places on Earth.
D. It’s seeing rapid population growth these years.
26. What is the author’s attitude to the current situation in Thailand and Bali
A. Approving. B. Critical. C. Uncaring. D. Tolerant.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage
A. Malaysian Jungle: Home to Wild Species.
B. How to Explore Malaysian Jungle.
C. Taman Negara: a Land of Extremes.
D. The Protection of Taman Negara.

A year after Walt Disney made history with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, its artists were struggling to find the right design for Bambi, the tale of a young deer The film’s production team realized they needed a style that highlighted almost all of the leaves, flowers and mushrooms in their first feature-length animated film.
Soon they got their inspiration from Tyrus Wong, whose work was on display as a new exhibit at New York City’s museum. In 1938, The Walt Disney Studio hired him to draw the frames between the main drawings of the animators. After reading the story of Bambi, he saw an opportunity to break out of his boring job. He said to himself, “This is all outdoor scenery. And I’m a landscape painter. This will be great!”
Inspired by Chinese landscape paintings, he used watercolor and pastels (蜡笔) to make sketches that bring the feeling of forest scenes with simple strokes of color and special attention to light and shadow. In the following years, Wong’s sketches attracted Disney and became the guide for Bambi’s background artists, who were later trained to imitate his style.
“His expression was a great leap forward for the medium,” writes John Lasseter, the chief creative officer for Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios. “Where other films were literal, Bambi was expressive and emotional.” In 2001, Wang was named “Disney Legend”, and he received the recognition as the true lead artist.
He pursued art all his life and still made art during his retirement, including toy animals from recycled materials and handmade kites that he regularly flew off the Santa Monica Pier in California. “People admire his works because of Bambi, but Bambi was just a really small part of his life,” says his youngest daughter. “He considers himself not a great artist but a lucky artist, who was at the right place at the right time.”

A. He was good at drawing cartoon characters.
B. He won a prize at a museum in New York.
C. His style was suitable for the animated film Bambi.
D. His work could be used to advertise Walt Disney’s films.

A. They were literal and detailed.
B. They showed the legend of Walt Disney.
C. They conveyed thoughts effectively.
D. They displayed the progress of the medium.
30. What can we learn about Tyrus Wong from the last paragraph
A. He gave up art after retirement. B. He had been busy his whole life.
C. He liked to purchase toys and kites. D. He was devoted to art during his life time.
31. How does the author introduce Tyrus Wong
A. By giving examples. B. By following time order.
C. By listing figures. D. By analyzing cause and effect.

China aims to set up a long-term human base camp on the moon. For this, scientists are developing innovative techniques to build structures on the moon, using materials found on the lunar surface. Since it’s not feasible to load all construction materials from earth, researchers are investigating methods to make the most of the easily available local materials.
Researchers at Huazhong University of Science and Technology are creating bricks from artificial lunar soil and these bricks will be sent to the Tiangong space station for testing. The performance of the bricks will be evaluated in space to determine if they can bear extreme conditions and are suitable for building a lunar research outpost. The samples will go through a three-year experiment on the space station to assess their durability under radiation and temperature variations. “We can bake the bricks to a strength of 100 megapascals (兆帕) here on earth, which is much harder than concrete.” Ding Lieyun from the university, told CCTV. Despite this testing, he highlighted that more research is required to determine if the bricks could bear the moon’s extreme conditions.
According to reports, the artificial lunar soil is almost identical to real lunar soil in composition, although each sample has slight variations in the ingredients. China has bold plans to build an International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) near the moon’s south pole by 2035. The base could be constructed using bricks made from lunar soil. Robots could be used to integrate the bricks into the structures shaped in various forms, such as an egg-shaped “lunar pot vessel”. Some construction parts of the research station could be 3D-printed on the moon.
However, it will not be a straightforward process. The lunar surface presents unique challenges, including the lack of water, low gravity, and frequent moonquakes. Ding and the team expect that the first brick made from real lunar soil will be produced during China’s Chang’e-8 mission in 2028.
32. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To introduce a new program.
B. To describe the future of lunar exploration.
C. To report on the development of lunar-soil bricks.
D. To explain the difficulties of building on the moon.
33. What does the underlined word “feasible” in the first paragraph probably mean
A. Possible. B. Difficult. C. Impossible. D. Necessary.
34. Which of the following is TRUE about the artificial lunar soil
A. It is exactly the same as real lunar soil.
B. It is completely different from real lunar soil.
C. It has no difference in composition in each sample.
D. It is similar to real lunar soil but with slight variations.
35. What can we infer from the passage
A. Building a moon base is very easy.
B. The lunar-soil bricks have passed all the tests.
C. More research is needed with lunar-soil bricks.
D. China has already built an International Lunar Research Station.

Overcome Fear of Failure
Many of us may accept in theory that failure is a necessary component of all learning and growth. 36 Very few of us know how to fail well. Intellectually, we may know that we need a growth mindset in order to develop, and yet failure remains an experience that is often associated with shame and embarrassment. How, then, can we overcome our fear of failure so that we can truly benefit from what failing has to teach us
37 Reminding yourself that there is no growth without failure — no learning, no development, no new experiences — can help you see your failure in a new light. Cultivate (培养) a growth mindset, an openness to learning from failure in the service of overall development.
Second, recall gritty successful people who failed a hundred, or maybe even a thousand times, before they got somewhere with their attempts. 38 He is famous for having said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
Third, watch how a little child learns to walk. They don’t need to read a set of instructions on how to walk upright. 39 They stand up, stumble (蹒跚而行),fall, stand up, stumble, fall, and stand up again, over and over again, until they learn to stand, then to walk, and then how to run.
Finally, simply start seeing your failures as teachers. Instead of being too hard on yourself and feeling sorry for yourself when you fail, ask yourself: What can I learn from this experience 40 What is the lesson here And remember: While it is hard to fail, it is much worse never to have tried to succeed.
A. What can I do better next time
B. What exactly causes my fear of failure
C. First, be aware that failure is usually painful.
D. Take the great inventor Thomas Edison for example.
E. Instead, they learn by doing and, especially, by failing.
F. First, have a positive attitude.

One pleasant New-year morning, Edward rose, washed and dressed himself in a hurry. He wanted to be the first to wish a happy New Year to his family. He turned up at every door of the house, and shouted the words of “Happy New Year” in an excited voice. After a quick breakfast he hopped along the street like a happy bird, greeted and repeated the words to those he met. The atmosphere swept up the neighborhood.
When he came back, his father gave him 50 dollars, saying he could buy whatever he had been wishing for. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some interesting books that he had seen at the bookstore located near the river through the city. He thanked his father and danced out of the house again with a light heart, intending to buy those books.
It was freezing and dry outside, and the wind blew strongly. However, Edward was very happy. As he ran down the street, he noticed a poor family, the father, the mother, and three children trembling with cold in the winter wind. “I wish you a happy New Year” said Edward as he was cheerfully passing on. The man took a look at the happy boy and shook his head sadly.
Edward stopped and said, “It seems that you do not belong to this country.” The man again shook his head, and a confused expression flashed over his face, for he could not understand or speak English. But the poor man pointed to his dry mouth, and to the children with hungry looks, as if to say, "These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time. "
Edward quickly realized that these poor people were in a very difficult situation and required
