It was our last class before the summer break. I was finishing the first year of an MFA program. I was tired and puzzled. “Was I good enough to be in the program ” When the professor asked about our summer plans, I panicked. I didn’t want to appear idle (无所事事的). “Gardening,” I responded immediately. Actually, I knew nothing about plants! My professor nodded and said, “What a good idea, Mary! Emily Dickinson loved gardening.”
Emily Dickinson lived in the countryside, studying plants as a child. I was in my late twenties, living in the city without gardening experience.
A few days later, I bought a jalape o seedling (青辣椒苗). At least I could say I’d tried gardening. I watered and changed the dirt for my little plant. I even talked to it. And over the summer, it grew bigger and bigger. I was proud. Maybe I didn’t have a black thumb after all.
I started the second year of my MFA, and then it was almost December and my jalape o was suffering. It was brown in some places, and many of its leaves had fallen. Would my little guy make it I prayed, “Please be okay,” as if its survival was closely linked to mine.
I worked hard in school. Spring came. My jalape o plant came back to life. It grew bigger with new leaves. And then it flowered. I handed in my graduate paper, a book of poems, in May. “Your poems are strong,” my professor said.
A huge weight lifted. I’d done it! At that time, I found the flowers on my jalape o plant were gone. I watched closer. A tiny green fruit pushed through where a flower had been. I smiled. I had succeeded in my MFA program, and my jalape o plant had grown right beside me, and I successfully did things I hadn’t thought possible.
4. Why did the author begin gardening
A. Just by accident.
B. Because of the love of gardening.
C. To express love for Emily Dickinson.
D. Because of the reminding of a professor.
5. When did the author begin her first gardening

6. What does the underlined phrase “a black thumb” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. A talent for growing plants well. B. A dirty finger to touch plants.
C A good fortune to do everything. D. The inability to do gardening.
7 Which proverb can best describe the story
A. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart. B. Easier said than done.
C It’s never too old to learn. D. Do not teach fish to swim.

New York (CNN) -OpenAI is worried that people might start to rely on ChatGPT too much for companionship, potentially leading to “dependence”, because of its new human-sounding voice mode.
ChatGPT’s advanced voice mode sounds remarkably lifelike. It responds in real time, can adjust to being interrupted, and makes the kinds of noises that humans make during conversations like laughing or “hmms”. It can also judge a speaker’s emotional state based on their tone of voice.
Within minutes of OpenAI announcing the feature at an event earlier this year, it was being compared to the AI digital assistant in the 2013 film Her, with whom the main character falls in love, only to be left heartbroken when the AI admits “she” also has relationships with hundreds of other users.
Now, OpenAI is apparently concerned that fictional story is a little too close to becoming reality, after it says it observed users talking to ChatGPT’s voice mode in language “expressing shared bonds” with the tool.
“Eventually, users might form social relationships with the AI, reducing their need for human interaction-potentially benefiting lonely individuals but possibly affecting healthy relationships,” the report states. It adds that hearing information from a bot (机器人程序) that sounds like a human could lead users to trust the tool more than they should, given AI’s tendency to get things wrong.
Some people are already forming what they describe as dependent relationships with AI chatbots, causing concern from relationship experts.
OpenAI said that human users’ interactions with ChatGPT’s voice mode could also, over time, influence what’s considered normal in social interactions.
For now, OpenAI says it’s committed to building Al “safely”, and plans to continue studying the potential for “emotional reliance” by users on its tools.
8. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about ChatGPT’s voice mode
A. Its features. B. Its appearance. C. Its different voice tones. D. Its emotional states.
9. Why is the 2013 film Her mentioned
A. To test ChatGPT’s voice mode. B. To show the concern of OpenAI.
C. To share the content of the film. D. To indicate AI can hurt people.
10. According to the report, what aspect might AI have impact on
A. Social practice. B. Interpersonal interaction. C. Outdoor activities. D. Electronic products.
11. What do relationship experts express concern over
A. AI’s tendency for giving wrong information.
B. The positive influence that AI chatbots have on users.
C. Dependent relationships between people and AI chatbots.
D. The safety of the communication between AI chatbots and people.
D
Clothing made from artificial materials, such as polyester (聚酯纤维), has many positive advantages. It is cheap to produce, lasts for a long time, and is comfortable to wear. However, the material has one major disadvantage. The tiny lint (纤维屑) from the material during each laundry cycle are big contributors to plastic pollution. Now, some scientists from Lithuania have found a way to recycle the waste into clean energy.
The researchers began by collecting lint from dryers across KTU’s (Kaunas University of Technology) dormitories. They then used a technique called pyrolysis (高温分解) to transform the lint waste into useful energy. The process involves heating the lint without oxygen. This causes the microfibers to turn into burnable gases and ashes.
The team, led by Dr. Samy Yousef, a senior researcher at KTU, published their findings in the journal Science of the Total Environment on March 25, 2021, showing that they were able to get three energy products — oil, gas, and charcoal — from the lint. More importantly, about 70 percent of the waste was turned into energy. Mathematical models done by the researchers indicate that 45 tons of microfibers — the amount generated by just one million people annually — could produce 13.8 tons of oil, 21.5 tons of gas, and 9.7 tons of charcoal, and result in an overall profit of about $12,0000.
Dr. Yousef has even thought of a creative way to gather the household waste. The researcher says, “I believe that the collection system, similar to deposit-return for drink containers, could be developed based on our research. A household would bring the lintmicrofiber to a collection point and receive some kind of reward for it.”
Though the technology is encouraging, it will take time to perfect and use on a large scale. While we cannot stop doing laundry, there are some easy ways to reduce our environmental impact. Washing those clothes less frequently, doing full loads, and line drying them all help reduce the pollution.
12. What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. The lint. B. Oxygen. C. The process. D. Energy.
13. Why does the writer provide so many data in Paragraph 3
A. To urge immediate use of their findings. B. To show the potential of the technology.
C. To prove the seriousness of lint waste. D. To present the flexibility of pyrolysis.
14. Why are “deposit-return for drink containers” mentioned in the passage
A. To explain a rule. B. To make a conclusion.
C. To make a prediction. D. To clarify an approach.
15. What might be the best title for the passage
A. Eco-friendly Technology Transforms Lint into Energy.
B. Scientists Have Reduced Plastic Pollution Sharply.
C. Creative Ways to Produce Energy Need Perfection.
D. Researchers Made New Discoveries about Lint.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the animal shelter, Sarah walked through the rows of cages until her eyes landed on a small, trembling dog huddled (蜷缩) in the corner. “I think I’ve found the one, ” Sarah whispered softly to herself as she looked into the dog’s sad eyes. This timid, abandoned dog had no idea that a journey of transformation with friendly people lay in store for him.
The shelter staff explained that the dog, named Buddy, had a difficult past and was very shy and scared. Sarah extended a hand, offering a soothing tone, “Hey sweetie, you must have a story to tell, but from now on, you’ve got a buddy in me. ”
Bringing Buddy home was just the beginning of their journey, which was rocky at first for him. Everything was strange and new, causing him to hide under furniture and startle at every sound. Therefore, Sarah provided a cozy bed, delicious meals, and most importantly, heaps of love and comfort.
Slowly but surely, he started to emerge from his shell, wagging his tail tentatively and gazing at Sarah with a glimmer of hope in his eyes. Under Sarah’s patient and loving guidance, Buddy flourished, even learning tricks and commands, and forming a deep bond with his new owner.
The journey of healing turned out to be a success. But Sarah had never expected it would bring about another one.
One day, while scrolling through social media, Sarah came across a heartwarming story about dogs being trained to assist children with autism (自闭症). Those children had social communication difficulties and had few facial expressions and gestures. Without hesitation, she inquired about the program and soon, Buddy was enrolled in training to become a certified therapy(治疗) dog. But she was unsure whether Buddy would be comfortable with the new challenge.

Using fitness apps to monitor health
According to a recent survey, 33% of the students involved are currently using fitness apps to monitor their daily steps, heart rate and body weight. 18% used them before, but now they don’t use them. Surprisingly, a significant 45% have never used such technology, and 4% express uncertainty about it.
This data highlights a growing interest in health tracking technology, yet also indicates many remain hesitant or unaware of its benefits. It’s crucial to recognize the potential of these apps in promoting overall well-being through personalized tracking and goal setting.
For those who haven’t tried, I recommend exploring their features to understand how they can contribute to better health management. Additionally, ongoing research can be done to rid misconceptions and encourage broader adoption of the apps.
第二节 (满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】
Their first day at the therapy center was filled with uncertainty. The children, accustomed to their own company or limited interactions, were initially cautious about Buddy. Some would avoid eye contact, while others stood still observing from a distance. Buddy sensed the anxiety too and mirrored their calm, sitting patiently and occasionally offering a gentle touch with his nose to a child who seemed less afraid. Despite the initial challenges, Sarah was confident that Buddy would eventually adapt to this new environment and make a positive impact.
As the weeks progressed, Sarah noticed a remarkable change both in the children and Buddy. The once timid dog now eagerly approached the children, gently touching their hands with his nose and wagging his tail enthusiastically.
