At around 8 am on Oct.19, hundreds of residents queued up in long lines at the entrances of the Potala Palace, carrying buckets (楠) and other paint ingredients. They were involved in the annual routine “makeover project of the palace.
As a landmark of Lhasa, the capital of the Tibet autonomous region, the Potala Palace was built in the 7th century. Being exposed to the weather, its exterior (外部的) walls lose their colors over time. So every year, after the rainy season, around the ninth month of the Tibetan calendar, the palace carries out its annual facelift (翻新) painting project. The work was originally scheduled to be completed within a month in the past. However, with advancements in technology, the project’s completion time has now been shortened to just one week, according to the palace’s management office. And this tradition has continued for more than 300 years.
Before the painting work begins, painters craft a paint mixing materials such as locally collected lime (石灰), milk, sugar and honey. This is why locals also call the Potala Palace the “sweet palace”. According to China News Service, adding these ingredients can make the mixture more adhesive (有黏性的), giving it insect repellent (驱虫的) and anti-corrosion (防腐蚀的) effects while introducing a variety of colors. Instead of brushing these mixtures onto the wall, locals often spray (喷洒) them. As China News Service noted, this method causes the paint to accumulate year after year, forming a thick coating that effectively protects the wall.
Many locals consider it to be an honor to take part in the painting. “We came to queue yesterday. We queued for a long time but we failed to enter the palace,” a young woman told China Daily. “Today, we came to line up in the early morning. We were so lucky to get the chance to paint the palace. We are delighted from the bottom of our hearts.”
“I have been taking part in the annual paintings of the palace for more than 20 years,” said Dawa, 57, another happy painter, “I consider the palace to be a very valuable part of our heritage, and I feel obligated (有义务的) and proud to be part of the painting team.
24. What do we know about the Potala Palace “makeover” project
A. It used to last for over a month. B. It has been ongoing for centuries.
C. It involves restoration inside and out. D. It starts in the rainy season every year.
25. The Potala Palace is called the “sweet palace” due to ______.
A. its varieties of colors. B. its sweet-looking appearance
C. local people’s love for the palace D. the ingredients applied in its paint
26. Why do locals spray the paint over the wall
A. It proves effortless and efficient. B. It effectively protects themselves.
C. It helps build up the protective layers. D. It makes for an even coating on the wall.
27. How do local people feel when participating in the project, according to the text
A. Fulfilled and honored. B. Proud but challenged.
C. Nervous but delighted. D. Disappointed and regretful

Most educators know the basics of peer (同龄人) pressure. When peers are around, teenagers take more risks. For example, teenage males drive faster with other boys in the same car because the reward centers of teenagers’ brains are more active with peers than when alone.
However, risk taking in an educational context is an important skill that enables progress and creativity, which is just one of positive peer effects. People often talk about negative (消极的) peer effects but ignore many studies that show a lot of negative behavior of high school kids is discouraged by friends. There is a lot of very positive pressure that peers apply, like, “No, man, that’s stupid.” This prevention is one of the many underreported forms of peer effects.
In a 2018 study of college freshmen, researchers found that having friends with a higher willingness to study is predictive (预测的) of receiving higher freshman grades. Because the study looked at both assigned (指派的) roommate pairings and chosen friend groups, the researchers were able to show the effect wasn’t just a reflection of “selection bias”, with hard-working kids having already chosen to befriend each other. Hanging out with someone who’s hard-working, they concluded, caused teenagers to study for more hours and achieve higher grades. The findings prove previous research showing a connection between how a child views the importance of doing well in school and how their friends do. Similar effects have been proved for volunteer work and health-promotive behaviors, such as exercise.
What does all this mean for educators Effective students can definitely improve classroom situations. In one program, kids were trained to publicly encourage anti-conflict (反冲突) practice. Reports of student conflict dropped 30% over one year. To some extent, this success may lie in the fact that the program got kids’ help. Efforts that engage (使……参与) teens in actual, real-life tasks have been the most promising when it comes to changing the
content of the values spread within teenager peer groups.
28. What can bring peer pressure to teenagers
A Presence of their peers. B. Being cheated by their friends.
C. Encouragement from the elders. D. Stress response in difficult situations.
29. What is most people’s attitude to peer pressure
A. Appreciative. B. Unclear. C. Acceptable. D. Unsupportive.
30. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. Love me, love my dog.
B. No competition, no progress.
C. Kids can be influenced by close association.
D. A true friend reaches for your hand and touches your heart.
31. How can peer pressure be applied to education
A. By sorting classroom activities.
B. By training students to keep away from conflict.
C. By discouraging students from choosing friends.
D. By leading students to positive social activities.
D
The pollutants jamming our skies aren’t just a health risk; they also cause ugly stains on buildings and other structures. To combat this, chemists have been working for years on a special type of paint that not only can clean itself but also may remove pollutants from the air.
In a recent study, researchers have developed a new paint that works using UV rays from ordinary sunlight, making its self-cleaning properties easier to activate. They’ve also shown they can effectively produce this paint from recycled materials. “We do this by using waste material from industry and also using fallen leaves, which are organic waste.” says Qaisar Maqbool, a chemist at the Vienna University of Technology.
In the working process, UV light stimulates the electrons in the titanium oxide nanoparticles (二氧化钛纳米颗粒), which interact with airborne water molecules to produce highly reactive hydroxyl radicals (烃基自由基). These unstable chemicals attack pollutants that come in contact with the paint, converting them into less harmful substances such as carbon dioxide and water. The research team added some necessary elements to the nanoparticles’ structure, which reduced the amount of energy needed to spark the reaction and let it work via
ordinary sunlight. In laboratory tests, these modified nanoparticles removed up to 96 percent of tested pollutants added to the paint’s surface.
“It’s better to be able to use solar light to activate, as the paint can work passively, by itself,” says Antonio Nieto-Márquez Ballesteros, a chemist at the Technical University of Madrid. But a real-world setting would probably reduce its effectiveness, he adds. “Under laboratory conditions, it’ s a very small scale, and everything is very well controlled, such as temperature, humidity or the concentration of pollutants, but you will never get those results at a real scale.”
The study authors stress that this work is just an initial step in their research. “I think it’s a very fundamental study,” says co-author Günther Rupprechter. “We don’t claim that we can remove all contamination from air,” he says, “but overall, it looks promising.”
32. What is the purpose of working on the new paint
A. To clean up pollutants from the air.
B. To reuse waste materials from industry.
C. To reduce the health risk from sunlight.
D. To increase the amount of nanoparticles.
33. What is essential in the working process of the paint
A Recycled water. B. UV light.
C. Stable chemicals. D. Carbon dioxide.
34. What do the researchers think of the paint
A. It holds an uncertain marketing prospect.
B. Its effectiveness may fall short in real world.
C. Its working conditions remain to be confirmed.
D. It deserves immediate application on a large scale.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. This Paint Can Clean Both Itself and the Air
B. New Paint Is Being Applied to Real-world Setting
C. Recycled Materials Contribute to a Promising Paint
D. Laboratory Research Unveils Ground-breaking Innovation

The Fall and Rise of a Star
I was certain that every student in my high school drama class noticed the paper shaking in my hands as I stood up to try out for the lead role in the play, I wasn’t there by choice, but rather because the teacher required that each of us have a try for a part.
As a “mode!” student, I went along with the request, even though it filled me with fear. I was small for my age, wore secondhand clothes, and cried easily. I desperately wished to remain in my seat and disappear into the background. However, there I was standing, on stage. Reading lines (台词), at least, was something I liked, So, I began to read.
Within moments, the fear was gone. I was reading the part for the main character, “Star,” who possessed an optimistic view on life despite being an orphan (孤儿). I wasn’t an orphan myself, but I felt like one. My father had left us, and my mother worked during the day, attended school at night and spent her weekends buried in homework, It was easy for me to believe that Star’s words were also my own. I finished reading and quickly returned to my seat. When the teacher announced the cast list and called my name, I was lost in my thoughts.
“Patty,” she repeated, “you are Star, Come and collect your lines.”
“This cannot be! How is it possible ” With a racing heart, I approached the teacher to get the pages.
I practiced every day — while walking to school, during lunch breaks, before bedtime, and even on weekends. In the beginning, I was worried about forgetting my lines, but I managed to learn them by heart. My confidence was gradually growing.
Then came the rehearsals (排练). It was during this stage that I began to doubt my confidence once again, I was too nervous to act, I frequently forgot my lines. Then after several failures, I finally reached my breaking point. I ran out towards the stairs and started to cry, “I can’t do it!”

【答案】Suddenly, I felt several gentle hands on my arms. Voices enveloped me, and a warm hand took hold of mine. Through tear-filled eyes, I looked up at concerned faces. The teacher and some of my classmates had followed me. “Please don’t quit,” one of them said firmly. “You can do e on!” All of a sudden, the feeling of being like an orphan disappeared. My heart was filled with warmth. Greatly encouraged and deeply moved, I bravely returned
to the stage after drying my tears. The rehearsals eventually went on smoothly, setting the stage for the final performance.
The day finally arrived and the performance received an enthusiastic response. The audience exploded in thunderous cheers and the teacher smiled with great satisfaction, as if saying “Great job!”. Getting off the stage, our classmates hugged each other excitedly, feeling proud of ourselves. I felt like a bird soaring through the sky. From that day on, whenever I encountered discouragement, I persevered. I will never forget that I was once a “fallen star” who managed to rise and shine through my own efforts, with the guidance of an exceptional teacher and the unexpected support of classmates.
